A novel knottedl-like homeobox （knox） gene, Pttknl （Populus tremulaxtremuloides knottedl）, isolated from the cambial region of hybrid aspen, was introduced into Petunia hybrida Vilm. using the leafdisc method mediated by Agrobacterium. A series of novel phenotypes was observed in transgenic petunia plants, including the formation of ectopic spikes on the adaxial surface of corollas and small petals on the abaxial surface of corollas, fusion of floral organs, shortening of corolla midribs, the formation of tumor-like knots along the midrib on the abaxial surface and serrated lobs of corolla margins, and alterations in petal color; except for changes in the leaves and plant architecture, RT-PCR showed that the Pttknl gene was expressed in the leaves of different petunia transgenic plants, whereas no signal was detected in wild-type plants. The possible function of Pttknl in leaf and flower development is discussed.

This study examines spatial and temporal changes in 16 extreme temperature indices at 37 weather stations in Xinjiang and their associations with changes in climate means during 1961-2008. Linear regression analyses reveal that significant increas- ing trends in temperature were observed over Xinjiang, with the rate of 0.13 ~C/decade, 0.24 ~C/decade, and 0.52 ~C/decade for annual mean temperature, annual maximum, and minimum temperature, respectively. Annual fi＇equency of cool nights （days） has decreased by -2.45 days/decade （-0.86 days/decade）, whereas the frequency of warm nights （days） has increased by 4.85 days/decade （1.62 days/decade）. Seasonally, the frequencies of summer warm nights and days are changing more rap- idly than the corresponding frequencies for cool nights and days. However, normalization of the extreme and mean series shows that the rate of changes in extreme temperature events are generally less than those of mean temperatures, except for winter cold nights which are changing as rapidly as the winter mean minimum temperatures. These results indicate that there have been seasonally and diurnally asymmetric changes in extreme temperature events relative to recent increases in tempera- ture means in Xinjiang.

Etoposide(VP-16) is used to treat a wide spectrum of human cancers, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC), but cancers develop resistance to this agent by promoting DNA repair. The catalytic subunit of DNA-PK(DNA-PKcs) and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1(PARP1) mediate acquired resistance and poor survival in NPC cells treated with DNA-damaging agents. Since DNA repair is the major molecular mechanism that alters sensitivity to DNA-damaging agents and these two enzymes may function concomitantly in the response to DNA damage in vivo, we explored the relationship between DNA-PKcs and PARP1, which may affect NPC cell survival by regulating DNA repair after VP-16 treatment. We performed western blotting, quantitative real-time PCR(qRT-PCR) and ELISAs and found that DNA-PKcs knockdown downregulated PARP1 and PAR ***, PARP1 knockdown reduced DNA-PKcs activity, indicating mutual regulation between DNA-PKcs and PARP1 in VP-16-induced DNA repair. Moreover, combination treatment with olaparib(PARP1 inhibitor) and NU7441(DNA-PKcs inhibitor) sensitized NPC cells to VP-16 both in vitro and in vivo, suggesting that a combination therapy consisting of olaparib, NU7441 and a DNAdamaging agent may be a successful treatment in patients with NPC.

Based on monthly ECMWF reanalysis-Interim （ERA-Interim） reanalysis data, along with monthly precipitation and temperature data, the Dynamic Plateau Monsoon Index （DPMI） is defined. The results of a contrast analysis of the DPMI versus the Traditional Plateau Monsoon Index （TPMI） are described. The response of general circulation to northern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau summer monsoon anomalies and the correlation of the DPMI with general circulation anomalies are investigated. The results show that, the DPMI reflected meteorological elements better and depicted climate variation more accurately than the TPMI. In years when the plateau summer monsoon is strong, the low over the plateau and the trough near the eastern coast of Asia are deeper and higher than normal over South China. This correlation corresponds to two anomalous cyclones over the plateau and the eastern coast of Asia and an anomalous anticyclone in South China. The plateau and its adjacent regions are affected by anomalous southwesterly winds that transport more moisture to South China and cause more precipitation. The lower reaches of the Yangtze River appear to receive more precipitation by means of the strong westerly water vapor flow transported from the ＂large triangle affecting the region＂. In years when the plateau summer monsoon is weak, these are opposite. The plateau monsoon is closely related to the intensity and position of the South Asian high, and the existence of a teleconnection pattern in the mid-upper levels suggests a possible linkage of the East Asian monsoon and the Indian monsoon to the plateau summer monsoon.

Understanding the radial growth trends of trees and their response to recent warming along elevation gradients is crucial for assessing how forests will be impacted by future climate ***,we collected 242 tree-ring cores from five plots across the Qinghai spruce(Picea crassifolia Kom.)forest belt(2600–3350 m a.s.l.)in the central Qilian Mountains,Northwest China,to study trends in the radial growth of trees and their response to climate factors with variable *** the sampled *** chronologies showed an increasing trend in the radial growth of trees at higher altitudes(3000–3350 m),whereas the radial growth of trees at lower altitudes(2600–2800 m)has decreased in recent *** radial growth of trees was limited by precipitation at lower elevations(L,ML),but mainly by temperature at higher elevation sites(MH,H,TL).Climate warming has caused an unprecedented increase in the radial growth of *** at higher *** results suggest that ongoing climate warming is beneficial to forest ecosystems at high elevations but restricts the growth of forest ecosystems at low elevations.

Hanging glaciers hold the absolute dominant number in West China and their changes had important influences on local hydrology,sea-level rise and natural hazards(snow/ice avalanches).However,logistic and operational difficulties have resulted in the lack of in-situ-measured data,leaving us with poor knowledge of the changing behaviors of this type of ***,we presented the spatiotemporal pattern of seasonal and annual mass changes of a mid-latitude hanging glacier in the Tien Shan based on repeated terrestrial laser scanning(TLS)surveys during the period *** distributed glacier surface elevation changes exhibited highly spatiotemporal variability,and the winter elevation changes showed slight surface lowering at the upper elevations and weak thickening at the glacier terminus,which was contrary to altitudinal elevation changing patterns at the summer and annual *** balance processes of the hanging glacier mainly occurred during summer and the winter mass balance was nearly balanced(-0.10±0.15 m w.e.).The glacier exhibited more rapid mass loss than adjacent other morphological glacier and the estimated response time of the glacier to climate change was very short(6-9 years),indicating hanging glaciers will experience rapid wastage and disappearance in the future even with climate change mitigation.

GPU parallel computation of dendrite growth competition in forced convection using the multi-phase-field-lattice Boltzmann model

A graphics-processing-unit(GPU)-parallel-based computational scheme is developed to realize the competitive growth process of converging bi-crystal in two-dimensional states in the presence of forced convection conditions by coupling a multi-phase field model and a lattice Boltzmann *** elimination mechanism in the evolution process is analyzed for the three conformational schemes constituting converging bi-crystals under pure diffusion and forced convection conditions,respectively,expanding the research of the competitive growth of columnar dendrites under melt convection *** results show that the elimination mechanism for the competitive growth of converging bi-crystals of all three configurations under pure diffusion conditions follows the conventional Walton-Chalmers *** there is forced convection with lateral flow in the liquid phase,the anomalous elimination phenomenon of unfavorable dendrites eliminating favorable dendrites occurs in the grain *** particular,the anomalous elimination phenomenon is relatively strong in conformation 1 and conformation 2 when the orientation angle of unfavorable dendrites is small,and relatively weak in conformation ***,the presence of convection increases the tip growth rate of both favorable and unfavorable dendrites in the grain *** addition,the parallelization of the multi-phase-field-lattice Boltzmann model is achieved by designing the parallel computation of the model on the GPU platform concerning the computerunified-device-architecture parallel technique,and the results show that the parallel computation of this model based on the GPU has absolute advantages,and the parallel acceleration is more obvious as the computation area increases.
