Prostate cancer is one of the most common tumors in urology. Dietary prophylaxis can effectively reduce prostate cancer incidence and progression. A growing body of research has shown that natural food ingredients such as Sulforaphane (SFN) can reduce the incidence of prostate cancer. It has a significant inhibitory effect on the progression from local prostate cancer to more aggressive prostate cancer. This article mainly expounds on the prevention mechanism and research progress of sulforaphane in various ways for prostate cancer and provides a reference for its future clinical application. In this review, 'SFN', 'Prostate Cancer', and 'PCa' were searched through Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and other databases. SFN inhibits the occurrence and development of prostate cancer mainly through anti-oxidation, inhibition of fatty acid metabolism, inhibition of glycolysis, inhibition of proinflammatory factors, inhibition of cell proliferation and promotion of apoptosis, reduction of androgen receptors, and influence of epigenetics. Therefore, SFN is a natural compound with great potential for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, but the key factors such as effective chemoprevention dose, bioavailability, toxic dose, and response of sulforaphane in the human body need to be further studied in the future.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease characterized by the presence of a plethora of autoantibodies and immune complex formation. Virtually every system and organ can be affected by SLE. Gastrointestinal symptoms are com-mon in SLE patients, and more than half of them are caused by adverse reactions to medications and viral or bacterial infections. Though not as common as lu-pus nephritis, SLE-related gastrointestinal involvement is clinically important because most cases can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Lupus mesenteric vasculitis is the most common cause, followed by pro-tein-losing enteropathy, intestinal pseudo-obstruction, acute pancreatitis and other rare complications such as celiac disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, etc. No specific autoantibody is identified as being associated with SLE-related gastroenteropathy. Imaging studies, particularly abdominal computed tomography scans, are helpful in diagnosing some SLE-related gastroen-teropathies. Most of these complications have good therapeutic responses to corticosteroids and immu-nosuppressive agents. Supportive measures such as bowel rest, nutritional support, antibiotics and proki-netic medications are helpful in facilitating functional recovery and improving the outcome.

Histological and physiological studies indicated that most skeletal muscles can be divided into a series of relatively independent sub-volumes: "neuromuscular compartments" and the partitioning property of the muscle result in the localization of muscle reflex. In the present experiment we studied the recruitment properties of medial gastracnemius (MG) muscle motoneuron pool of decerebrate cat with two kinds of local mechanical stimulation: local stretch and acupuncture-like stimuli. The results indicate that: (ⅰ) there is an obvious property of localization of recruitment activity, only the MNs which innervate the stimulated compartment were recruited by weaker and shorter stimuli; (ⅱ) recruitment activity spread to those MNs which supply the adjacent and distal compartments during the strength of stimulation or duration of the stimulation was increased; and (ⅲ) the recruitment property of muscle activity elicited by the local mechanical stimulation is thought similar to that of "needle feeling" along the meridian pathway during stimulation of acupuncture point.

The levels of thyroxine (T3, T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in rat serum were measured by radioimmunoassay, and also ultrastructure of the thyroid gland and adenohypophyseal cell were examined by transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) after low concentration (0. 05 mg/kg) of samarium chloride (SmCl3) administration by intraperitoneal, oral and tail intravenous routes. The results showed that the level of T4 in rat serum increased and the level of TSH unchanged by the intraperitoneal administration, and the levels of T3, T4 and TSH did not increase by the oral and tail intravenous administration. The evidences mentioned above were in accord with the morphological changes of thyroid follicular epithelial cells andadenohypophysis thyrotroph observed under electronic microscope in a sense.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic fistula (PF) remains the most challenging complication in pancreatic surgery, yet few published studies have focused on the risk factors for postoperative PF in patients undergoing surgery for insulinomas. METHODS: From January 1990 to February 2010, a total of 292 patients with insulinomas underwent surgery at Peking Union medical college Hospital. Demographic data, intraoperative procedures, and postoperative data were collected. Particular attention was paid to variables associated with PF as defined by the International Study Group of Pancreatic Fistula (ISGPF). Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify possible risk factors for PP. RESULTS: PF was found in 132 (45.2%) patients, of whom 90 were classified into ISGPF grade A, 33 grade B, and 9 grade C. Multivariate analysis showed that male patients (OR=2.56; P=0.007) and operative time > 180 minutes (OR=3.756; P 180 minutes were independent risk factors for clinical PF, while pancreatic resection with a stapler was a protective factor. Whether body mass index (BMI) and other variables during operation are risk factors of PF needs further study. (Hepatobiliary Pancreat Dis Int 2012;11:102-106)
