Microbial responses to combined oxidation and catalysis treatment of 1,4-dioxane and co-contaminants in groundwater and soil

Post-treatment impacts of a novel combined hydrogen peroxide(H2O_(2))oxidation and WOx/ZrO_(2) catalysis used for the removal of 1,4-dioxane and chlorinated volatile organic compound(CVOC)contaminants were investigated in soil and groundwater microbial *** treatment train removed~90%1,4-dioxane regardless of initial concentrations of 1,4-dioxane and *** Illumina Miseq platform and bioinformatics were used to study the changes to microbial community *** approach determined that dynamic shifts of microbiomes were associated with conditions specific to treatments as well as 1,4-dioxane and CVOCs *** biodiversity was observed to decrease only after oxidation under conditions that inc.uded high levels of 1,4-dioxane and CVOCs,but inc.eased when 1,4-dioxane was present without ***_(x)/ZrO_(2) catalysis reduced biodiversity across all *** classification demonstrated oxidative tolerance for members of the genera Massilia and Rhodococcus,while catalyst tolerance was observed for members of the genera Sphingomonas and *** discriminant analysis effect size was a useful statistical tool to highlight representative microbes,while the multidimensional analysis elucidated the separation of microbiomes under the low 1,4-dioxane-only condition from all other conditions containing CVOCs,as well as the differences of microbial population among original,post-oxidation,and post-catalysis *** results of this study enhance our understanding of microbial community responses to a promising chemical treatment train,and the metagenomic analysis will help practitioners predict the microbial community status during the post-treatment period,which may have consequences for long-term management strategies that inc.ude additional biodegradation treatment or natural attenuation.

A fully nonlinear and weakly dispersive water wave model for simulating the propagation,interaction,and transformation of solitary waves

Occupant-centric controls(OcC)is an indoor climate control approach whereby occupant feedback is used in the sequence of operation of building energy *** OcC has been used in a wide range of building applications,an OcC category that has received considerable research interest is learning occupants'thermal preferences through their thermostat interactions and adapting temperature setpoints *** recent studies used reinforcement learning(RL)as an agent for OcC to optimize energy use and occupant *** studies depended on predicted mean vote(PMV)models or constant comfort ranges to represent comfort,while only few of them used thermostat *** paper addresses this gap by introducing a new off-policy reinforcement learning(RL)algorithm that imitates the occupant behaviour by utilizing unsolicited occupant thermostat *** algorithm is tested with a number of synthetically generated occupant behaviour models implemented via the Python APl of *** simulation results indicate that the RL algorithm could rapidly learn preferences for all tested occupant behaviour scenarios with minimal exploration *** substantial energy savings were observed with most occupant scenarios,the impact on the energy savings varied depending on occupants'preferences and thermostat use behaviour stochasticity.

Improvement of decentralized random decrement technique for data processing in wireless sensor network

The Random Decrement Technique （RDT）, based on decentralized computing approaches implemented in wireless sensor networks （WSNs）, has shown advantages for modal parameter and data aggregation identification. However, previous studies of RDT-based approaches from ambient vibration data are based on the assumption of a broad-band stochastic process input excitation. The process normally is modeled by filtered white or white noise. In addition, the choice of the triggering condition in RDT is closely related to data communication. In this project, research has been conducted to study the nonstationary white noise excitations as the input to verify the random decrement technique. A local extremum triggering condition is chosen and implemented for the purpose of minimum data communication in a RDT-based distributed computing strategy. Numerical simulation results show that the proposed technique is capable of minimizing the amount of data transmitted over the network with accuracy in modal parameters identification.

Naval derusting wastewater containing high concentration of iron, treated in UV photo-Fenton-like oxidation

The UV photooxidation with Fe（Ⅲ） and H2O2 was employed to treat a naval derusting wastewater, which contains the high COD （chemical oxygen demand） and various metal concentrations exceptionally with high concentrations of citric acid and iron. Because of its iron containment, the Fenton-like reaction automatically took place with the added amount of H2O2. The decomposition rate was found in a sequence of： UV/HEOE/Fe（Ⅲ）〉 UV/H2O2 〉 Fe（Ⅱ）/H2O2. Two H2O2 injection methods, single and multiple points, were evaluated. The multiple-point H2O2 injection was more efficient to decompose the citric acid. The decomposition of the synthetic citric acid and the real derusting citric acid wastewater was also compared. The 93% COD reduction of the derusting wastewater was achieved using the UV/HEOE/Fe（Ⅲ） treatment.

Improving Multi-Model Ensemble Forecasts of Tropical Cyclone Intensity Using Bayesian Model Averaging

This paper proposes a method for multi-model ensemble forecasting based on Bayesian model averaging （BMA）, aiming to improve the accuracy of tropical cyclone （TC） intensity forecasts, especially forecasts of minimum surface pressure at the cyclone center （Pmin）＇ The multi-model ensemble comprises three operational forecast models： the Global Forecast System （GFS） of NCEP, the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting （HWRF） models of NCEP, and the Integrated Forecasting System （IFS） of ECMWF. The mean of a predictive distribution is taken as the BMA forecast. In this investigation, bias correction of the minimum surface pressure was applied at each forecast lead time, and the distribution （or probability density function, PDF） of emin was used and transformed. Based on summer season forecasts for three years, we found that the intensity errors in TC forecast from the three models var-ied significantly. The HWRF had a much smaller intensity error for short lead-time forecasts. To demonstrate the proposed methodology, cross validation was implemented to ensure more efficient use of the sample data and more reliable testing. Comparative analysis shows that BMA for this three-model ensemble, after bias correction and distri-bution transformation, provided more accurate forecasts than did the best of the ensemble members （HWRF）, with a 5%-7% decrease in root-mean-square error on average. BMA also outperformed the multi-model ensemble, and it produced ＂predictive variance＂ that represented the forecast uncertainty of the member models. In a word, the BMA method used in the multi-model ensemble forecasting was successful in TC intensity forecasts, and it has the poten-tial to be applied to routine operational forecasting.

Assessment of climate change impact on high flows in a watershed characterized by flood regulating reservoirs

A climate-induced extreme flow event such as flooding is one of the most devastating natural hazards,which can significantly damage human lives and *** study examined the effects of climate change on the high flow conditions in the Great Miami River Watershed in Ohio under two emission scenarios(RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5).Streamflow for the 21st century was simulated by utilizing a watershed model-SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool)and 10 different climate outputs from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5(CMIP5).The future streamflow was divided into three equal periods:2016-2043(early century),2044-2071(mid-century),and 2072-2099(late century)and independently analyzed to compare high flows of respective intervals with baseline periods(1988-2015).The analysis predicted that 7-day,10-year high-flow(7Q10)would inc.ease by 38%under RCP 4.5 and 44%under RCP ***,the annual peak flows for study periods were predicted to inc.ease by 26%under RCP 4.5 and 38%under RCP 8.5 from the base ***,the analysis demonstrated an erratic response for monthly peaks indicating that the peak flow would inc.ease in summer months-May and July to ***,the result did not show any significant inc.ease during the winter season,especially from November to *** analysis of the four major dams located in the watershed showed that the dam’s peak discharges inc.ease in January,May,and *** though inc.easing peaks were projected in September for the 21st century,the monthly peaks from the watershed outlet were found to be lowest in September as compared to other *** frequency of future flooding compared to the historical record was found to be inc.easing in the mid-century under RCP 4.5 and the late century under RCP *** the future flood is projected to inc.ease,this study finds the reasonable impact of climate change on flood regulating reservoirs/dams in monthly ***,daily high flows(90th percentile flow)would b

SERS detection of arsenic in water:A review

Arsenic（As） is one of the most toxic contaminants found in the environment. Development of novel detection methods for As species in water with the potential for field use has been an urgent need in recent years. In past decades, surface-enhanced Raman scattering（SERS）has gained a reputation as one of the most sensitive spectroscopic methods for chemical and biomolecular sensing. The SERS technique has emerged as an extremely promising solution for in-situ detection of arsenic species in the field, particularly when coupled with portable/handheld Raman spectrometers. In this article, the recent advances in SERS analysis of arsenic species in water media are reviewed, and the potential of this technique for fast screening and field testing of arsenic-contaminated environmental water samples is discussed. The problems that remain in the field are also discussed and an outlook for the future is featured at the end of the article.

Role of Salix reinii patches in spatio-temporal patterns of cohabitants on a Japanese volcano

Shrub patches often support the colonizers particularly under stressful and/or disturbed *** intensities of stresses and disturbances on mountains are often related to an elevation gradient and are decreased by shrub patches(canopy and litter).We aim to clarify these relationships by using shrub patches at different elevations on a *** monitored all shoots in plots established inside and outside of patches of Salix reinii(Salicaceae)and their related environments,such as temperature,light,moisture and chemistry,at three elevations on Mount Koma(1131 m a.s.l.),northern Japan,from early spring in 2005 to summer in *** patch structures were evaluated by area,branch density and litter *** structures of shrub patches did not differ among the *** patches inc.eased the diversity of rare species,by an overall inc.ease in plant species *** moisture,nitrogen and phosphate contents in the patches were higher than outside of *** effects of shrub patches on the cohabitants were overall positive,although the effects were negative on seedling abundance,shoot survival and *** results suggest that the growth patterns of shrub patches determine the plant community structures and facilitate plant diversity.

Nearly forty years after the Clean Water Act(CWA)was passed,we’ve come a long way in our understanding of the strength and fragility of our water resources and the impact that our actions or inactions can have on *** regulatory systems are in place and best management practices(BMPs)are plentiful,successfully managing risk in environmental compliance remains a constant ***,the rules to environmental compliance are simple:half of it is paperwork and the other half is *** you take an organized and balanced approach to compliance,you should be able to keep risk at bay and avoid enforcement ***,remember that no matter how thoroughly you prepare for a construction project,you may still encounter unexpected situations requiring environmental knowledge and *** you start to plan your operation,you should take the time to stop and consider the risk associated with your *** environmental Protection Agency(EPA)considers risk to be“the chance of harmful effects to human health or to ecological systems resulting from exposure to the environmental stressor.”The“stressors”are a variety of physical,chemical,or biological activities that can cause negative reactions to ecosystems and the environment.1 In order to limit,and hopefully prevent,risky situations,the key is to assess and target the problems that could arise and then implement a system of metrics that help with prevention.
