Is the Cape Stone Forest in Shantou City formed by wave erosion? A comparison of the pedestal rocks on the coasts and the mountains of Queshi in eastern Guangdong, China

Cape Stone Forest is a group of granite rock pillars(pedestal rocks) towering over Shilin Lake, on the southern shore of Shantou Bay in eastern Guangdong, China. The rock pillars were previously identified as sea stacks because they have marine notch-like concave sidewalls at their base, and more importantly, the lake is immediately adjacent to the bay, which is exposed to the open sea. However, rock pillars similar in shape and size can also be found at the top of Queshi Mountain, which is only about 300 meters northwest of the lake and about 85 meters above sea level. Therefore, the marine origin of Cape Stone Forest is seriously questioned. In this study, 3D imagery and drone technology were used to collect data in the investigations without direct manual measurements in the water or on the mountain. It shows that the concave sidewalls of the rock pillars in the lake and on the mountains occur at different heights and are exposed to different directions, while a natural sea stack on Mayu Island at the mouth of Shantou Bay has a horizontal notch parallel to the sea level, although the granite rock of the sea stack is the same as that of the lake and the mountains. The eastern side of the island, where the sea stack is located, is exposed to the open sea but blocks large waves for the rock pillars in the lake. Therefore, the origin of Cape Stone Forest cannot be explained by wave-based mechanisms. The only satisfactory explanation that takes into account all the field evidence is that the narrow rock pillars of the lake and mountain were formed by chemical weathering that penetrated closely the spaced joints of the granite rock, and the notch-like concave sidewalls were formed by more effective chemical weathering at the base of the pillars.

Exploring diurnal and seasonal variabilities in surface urban heat island intensity in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

The urban heat island(UHI) is an environmental problem of wide concern because it poses a threat to both the human living environment and the sustainable development of cities. Knowledge of the spatiotemporal characteristics and the driving factors of UHI is essential for mitigating their impact. However, current understanding of the UHI in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA) is inadequate. Combined with data(e.g., land surface temperature and land use.) acquired from the Google Earth Engine and other sources for the period 2001–2020, this study examined the diurnal and seasonal variabilities, spatial heterogeneities, temporal trends, and drivers of surface UHI intensity(SUHII) in the GBA. The SUHII was calculated based on the urban–rural dichotomy, which has been proven an effective method. The average SUHII was generally 0–2°C, and the SUHII in daytime was generally greater than that at night. The maximum(minimum) SUHII was found in summer(winter);similarly, the largest(smallest) diurnal difference in SUHII was during summer(winter). Generally, the Mann–Kendall trend test and the Sen's slope estimator revealed a statistically insignificant upward trend in SUHII on all time scales. The influence of driving factors on SUHII was examined using the Geo-Detector model. It was found that the number of continuous impervious pixels had the greatest impact, and that the urban–rural difference in the enhanced vegetation index had the smallest impact, suggesting that anthropogenic heat emissions and urban size are the main influencing factors. Thus, controlling urban expansion and reducing anthropogenic heat generation are effective approaches for alleviating surface UHI.

Impact of Hinterland Manufacturing on the Development of Container Ports: Evidence from the Pearl River Delta, China

Container ports and hinterland manufacturing are two important forces of the local participation in economic *** study,taking the Pearl River Delta(PRD),China with an export-oriented economy as an example,applies Huff and panel regres-sion models to evaluate the impact of hinterland manufacturing on the development of container ports during the period of 1993–*** results show that 1)the spatial patterns of hinterlands for hub ports help to determine the distribution range and scale of economic variables that affect port throughput;2)the hinterland’s gross manufacturing output has universally positive influence on port through-put,wherein export-oriented processing and the entire manufacturing industry have significantly positive impact on port throughput in 1993–2011 and 2001–2019,respectively;3)the two internal structural factors related to an export-oriented economy,labor-intensive sectors and foreign-funded terminals,have positively moderate the direct influence of hinterland manufacturing on port *** results highlight the importance of local context in understanding port-manufacturing relationship in developing *** on our findings,policy implications are further proposed to enhance port network organization in PRD.

Sustainable Intensification and Large-scale Operation of Cultivated Land Use at the Farmers’ Scale:A Case Study of Shandong Province,China

Sustainable intensification of cultivated land use(SICLU) and large-scale operations(LSO) are widely acknowledged strategies for enhancing agricultural ***,the existing literature has faced challenges in precisely defining SICLU and constructing comprehensive indicators,which has hindered the exploration of factors influencing LSO within the SICLU *** address this gap,we integrated self-efficacy theory into the design of an index framework for evaluating *** subsequently employed econometric models to analyze the significant factors that impact *** findings reveal that SICLU can be divided into four key dimensions:intensive management,efficient output,resource conservation,and ecological environment ***,it is crucial to incorporate belief-based cognitive factors into the index system,as farmers’ understanding of fertilizer and pesticide application significantly influences their willingness to engage in ***,we identify grain market turnover as the most influential factor in promoting LSO,with single-factor contribution rates reaching 70.9% for cultivated land transfer willingness and 62.5% for the total planting ***,unlike irrigation and agricultural machinery inputs,increased labor inputs correspond to larger planting areas for *** trend may be attributed to reduced labor availability because of rural labor migration,whereas the reduction in irrigation and agricultural input is contingent on innovations in production practices and the transfer of cultivated land management ***,SICLU dynamically influences LSO,with each index related to SICLU having an optimal range that fosters *** insights offer valuable guidance for policymakers,emphasizing farmers as their central focus,with the adjustment of input and output factors as a means to achieve LSO as the ultimate *** conclusion,we propose research avenues for further enriching the SICLU framework to ensur

Establishing the relationship between land use land cover,normalized difference vegetation index and land surface temperature:A case of Lower Son River Basin,India

Efficient knowledge distillation for hybrid models:A vision transformer‐convolutional neural network to convolutional neural network approach for classifying remote sensing images

In various fields,knowledge distillation(KD)techniques that combine vision transformers(ViTs)and convolutional neural networks(CNNs)as a hybrid teacher have shown remarkable results in ***,in the realm of remote sensing images(RSIs),existing KD research studies are not only scarce but also lack *** issue significantly impedes the deployment of the notable advantages of ViTs and *** tackle this,the authors introduce a novel hybrid‐model KD approach named HMKD‐Net,which comprises a CNN‐ViT ensemble teacher and a CNN *** to popular opinion,the authors posit that the sparsity in RSI data distribution limits the effectiveness and efficiency of hybrid‐model knowledge *** a solution,a simple yet innovative method to handle variances during the KD phase is suggested,leading to substantial enhancements in the effectiveness and efficiency of hybrid knowledge *** authors assessed the performance of HMKD‐Net on three RSI *** findings indicate that HMKD‐Net significantly outperforms other cuttingedge methods while maintaining a significantly smaller ***,HMKD‐Net exceeds other KD‐based methods with a maximum accuracy improvement of 22.8%across various *** ablation experiments indicated,HMKD‐Net has cut down on time expenses by about 80%in the KD *** research study validates that the hybrid‐model KD technique can be more effective and efficient if the data distribution sparsity in RSIs is well handled.

Grassland-type ecosystem stability in China differs under the influence of drought and wet events

Ecological stability is a core issue in ecological research and holds significant implications forhumanity. The increased frequency and intensity of drought and wet climate events resulting from climatechange pose a major threat to global ecological stability. Variations in stability among different ecosystemshave been confirmed, but it remains unclear whether there are differences in stability within the sameterrestrial vegetation ecosystem under the influence of climate events in different directions and ***'s grassland ecosystem includes most grassland types and is a good choice for studying this *** study used the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index-12 (SPEI-12) to identify thedirections and intensities of different types of climate events, and based on Normalized DifferenceVegetation Index (NDVI), calculated the resistance and resilience of different grassland types for 30consecutive years from 1990 to 2019 (resistance and resilience are important indicators to measurestability). Based on a traditional regression model, standardized methods were integrated to analyze theimpacts of the intensity and duration of drought and wet events on vegetation stability. The resultsshowed that meadow steppe exhibited the highest stability, while alpine steppe and desert steppe had thelowest overall stability. The stability of typical steppe, alpine meadow, temperate meadow was at anintermediate level. Regarding the impact of the duration and intensity of climate events on vegetationecosystem stability for the same grassland type, the resilience of desert steppe during drought was mainlyaffected by the duration. In contrast, the impact of intensity was not significant. However, alpine steppewas mainly affected by intensity in wet environments, and duration had no significant impact. Ourconclusions can provide decision support for the future grassland ecosystem governance.

Temporal and spatial variation and prediction of water yield and water conservation in the Bosten Lake Basin based on the PLUS-InVEST model

To comprehensively evaluate the alterations in water ecosystem service functions within arid watersheds,this study focused on the Bosten Lake Basin,which is situated in the arid region of Northwest *** research was based on land use/land cover(LULC),natural,socioeconomic,and accessibility data,utilizing the Patch-level Land Use Simulation(PLUS)and Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs(InVEST)models to dynamically assess LULC change and associated variations in water yield and water *** analyses included the evaluation of contribution indices of various land use types and the investigation of driving factors that influence water yield and water *** results showed that the change of LULC in the Bosten Lake Basin from 2000 to 2020 showed a trend of increasing in cultivated land and construction land,and decreasing in grassland,forest,and unused *** unused land of all the three predicted scenarios of 2030(S1,a natural development scenario;S2,an ecological protection scenario;and S3,a cultivated land protection scenario)showed a decreasing *** scenarios S1 and S3 showed a trend of decreasing in grassland and increasing in cultivated land;while the scenario S2 showed a trend of decreasing in cultivated land and increasing in *** water yield of the Bosten Lake Basin exhibited an initial decline followed by a slight increase from 2000 to *** areas with higher water yield values were primarily located in the northern section of the basin,which is characterized by higher *** conservation demonstrated a pattern of initial decrease followed by stabilization,with the northeastern region demonstrating higher water conservation *** the projected LULC scenarios of 2030,the estimated water yield under scenarios S1 and S3 was marginally greater than that under scenario S2;while the level of water conservation across all three scenarios remained rather *** results showed that Hejin

Participatory Risk Governance for Seoul, South Korea's Flood Risk Management

Risk governance is a widely used framework in natural and societal risk management research. Risks from natural hazards in urban areas call for the establishment of rigorous and participatory urban risk governance. In this study, we examined participatory risk governance(PRG) of flood risk management(FRM) in Seoul, South Korea. We conducted key informant interviews and implemented a survey with citizens, to explore perceptions of flood risks and risk management, and to examine prospects for improving PRG in Seoul. We found a gap between the perceptions of key informants and *** informants believed that citizens' low awareness of flood risks hinders PRG. Yet our research found that citizens' risk awareness was not low, and risk awareness may not be the main barrier to participation in PRG. Instead, we found that citizens lacked knowledge of FRM actions, and they assigned government bodies a high level of responsibility for FRM,compared to the level of responsibility that citizens assigned to themselves. Moreover, the actors involved in FRM tended not to trust each other, which implies a lack of mutual understanding. To increase the eff ectiveness of PRG, we suggest a polycentric governance structure anchored by a leading actor group, and active promotion of the participation of actors at multiple levels of governance. Communication between government and citizen participants, designed to foster improved understanding and recognition of one another's roles and contributions to FRM, will enhance trust and improve the implementation of PRG in Seoul.
