Hearing Impairment in Senile Dementia of Alzhaimer's Type

Objectives To evaluate peripheral auditory dysfunction in senile dementia of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and its relationship with cognitive dysfunction. Methods Pure tone thresholds,word recognition scores (WRS), acoustic immittance and auditory brain-stem responses (ABR) were tested to evaluate the auditory function in 43 AD patients and 50 normal subjects. The test reliability in these subjects was examined before the test results were evaluated for their correlation with the Mini Mental State Examination(MMSE) score. Results There were no statistically significant differences in peripheral auditory functions between the two ears in the tested subjects or between the two groups when the auditometric results of the right ear were compared(P > 0.05). Also, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups when audiometric test reliability, acoustic impedance and ABR results were compared(P > 0.05). Conclutions The pure tone audiometric threshold and WRS in AD patients are similar to those in comparable non-AD senile subjects. Peripheral auditory dysfunction is not related to cognitive dysfunction.

Boeravinone B ameliorates allergic nasal inflammation by modulating the GATA-3/T-bet signaling pathway in a mouse model of allergic rhinitis

Objective:To evaluate the anti-allergic effect of boeravinone B against ovalbumin-induced allergic rhinitis in mice and explore its possible ***:For the induction of allergic rhinitis,mice were intraperitoneally sensitized and intranasally challenged with ovalbumin,as well as orally received various concentrations of boeravinone *** mucosal inflammation,and the levels of nitric oxide,β-hexosaminidase,IFN-γ,LTC-4,myeloperoxidase,Nrf2,HO-1,GATA-3,ROR-γ,T-bet,antioxidant parameters,and allergen-specific cytokines were ***:Boeravinone B markedly reduced ovalbumin-induced increase in the number of episodes of nasal sneezing,rubbing,and discharge,as well as the levels of IgE,IgG1,andβ-hexosaminidase(P<0.05).It also significantly reduced differential cell count,myeloperoxidase,oxide-nitrosative stress,and the levels of IL-1β,IL-4,IL-5,IL-6,IL-13,IL-17,tumor necrosis factor-α,GATA-3,and ROR-γwhile enhancing the level of ***:Boeravinone B is a potential therapeutic agent for allergic rhinitis by modulating various inflammatory mediators and immune responses.

Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss:Effectiveness of salvage treatment with low-dose intratympanic dexamethasone

Objectives:To evaluate hearing outcome of salvage treatment with intratympanic steroids(ITS)in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss(ISSNHL)refractory to initial systemic steroid(SS)*** and methods:A retrospective medical chart review was conducted on 54 consecutive patients with ISSNHL refractory to *** treatment with a low dose intratympanic dexamethasone(4 mg/ml)was offered after one week of primary *** were divided into two groups:25 patients accepted ITS(treatment group)and 29 patients did not undergo additional treatment(control group).A pure tone average(PTA)gain of at least 10 dB was considered hearing ***:Hearing improvement rate was higher in ITS group compared to control group(40%vs.13.8%,p=0.035).A mean PTA improvement of 8.6±9.8 dB was observed in the ITS group and,whereas the control group had an average hearing gain of 0.7±2 dB(p<0.001).Audiometric analysis revealed a significant hearing gain in ITS group at all tested frequencies compared to control group(p<0.05).Analysis of the selected variables,identified intratympanic steroid treatment as the only independent prognostic factor for hearing improvement(OR=4.2,95%CI:1.1e15.7;p=0.04).Conclusion:Intratympanic low dose dexamethasone is effective in patients with incomplete hearing recovery after primary systemic steroid treatment.

Endoscopic vs external dacryocystorhinostomy-comparison from the patients' aspect

·AIM: To compare the success and complication rates,duration of surgeries and clinical comfort after endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy(END-DCR) or external dacryocysto-rhinostomy(EXT-DCR).·METHODS: Fifty patients who underwent EXT- or END-DCR between January 2010-2012 were involved in the study. A questionnaire was applied to patients preoperatively, and postoperatively. Subjective success was defined by absence of epiphora, objective success by a normal nasolacrimal lavage and a positive functional endoscopic dye test(FEDT). Postoperative pain and cosmetic result of surgery were interpreted by the patients, who were also asked whether they would offer this surgery to a friend or would prefer this surgery once more if necessary.·RESULTS: Twenty-five patients underwent END-DCR and 25 underwent EXT-DCR. Mean duration of surgeries were 35 min both for EXT-DCR(30-50) and END-DCR(35-50)(P =0.778). Intraoperative bleeding were documented in 48% of EXT-DCR and 4% of END-DCR cases(P <0.001). In total 96% of EXT-DCR and 100% of END-DCR patients had subjective success. Objective success was 100% in each group. There was no significant difference between the epiphora scorings and FDDT results in postoperative visits among the ***-DCR group reported less pain in first week and month(P <0.05, P <0.05). More patients in END-DCR group were happy with the cosmetic result in first week and month(P <0.001, P <0.001). More patients in END-DCR group offered this surgery to a friend(P <0.001). All patients in END-DCR group preferred this surgery once more if necessary, only 48% in EXT-DCR preferred the same method(P <0.001).·CONCLUSION: Although both END- and EXT-DCRs provide satisfactory outcomes with similar objective andsubjective success rates, we demonstrated that the endonasal approach caused significantly less pain in early postoperative period than the external *** comfort defined by the patients was quite higher in END-DCR group, in whic

Expression of HSP70 in Peripheral Lymphocytes of the Patients with Allergic Rhinitis

The expression levels of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) from peripheral lymphocytes of the patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and the clinical implication were investigated In the morning, 3 ml of fasting venous blood was taken out The lymphocytes were isolated by using Ficoll-Hypaque and the expression of HSP70 in the lymphocytes was detected by using Western blot In the AR patients the HSP70 level (41 49±15 77 integrated optical density, IOD) were significantly higher than that in the control group (23 89±10 13 IOD, P< 0 05) Western blot demonstrated that HSP70 bands in AR patients were more intensive than those in the control group It was concluded that the elevated HSP70 level in peripheral lymphocytes of the AR patients might contribute to the development of AR

NADPH Oxidase-dependent Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial Damage in Hippocampus of D-galactose-induced Aging Rats

Mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA) common deletion(CD) plays a significant role in aging and age-related *** this study,we used D-galactose(D-gal) to generate an animal model of aging and the involvement and causative mechanisms of mitochondrial damage in such a model were *** 5-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups:D-gal group(n=10) and control group(n=10).The quantity of the mtDNA CD in the hippocampus was determined using a TaqMan real-time PCR *** electron microscopy was used to observe the mitochondrial ultrastructure in the *** blot was used to detect the protein levels of NADPH oxidase(NOX) and uncoupling protein 2(UCP2).We found that the level of mtDNA CD was significantly higher in the hippocampus of D-gal-induced aging rats than in control *** comparison with the control group,the mitochondrial ultrastructure in the hippocampus of D-gal-treated rats was damaged,and the protein levels of NOX and UCP2 were significantly increased in the hippocampus of D-gal-induced aging *** study demonstrated that the levels of mtDNA CD and NOX protein expression were significantly increased in the hippocampus of D-gal-induced aging *** findings indicate that NOX-dependent reactive oxygen species generation may contribute to D-gal-induced mitochondrial damage.

Otitis media with effusion in children: Pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.A review

Otitis media with effusion(OME)is a frequent paediatric *** condition is often asymptomatic,and so can easily be ***,OME can lead to hearing loss that impairs the child's language and behavioural *** diagnosis is essentially clinical,and is based on otoscopy and(in some cases)*** endoscopy is only indicated in cases of unilateral OME or when obstructive adenoid hypertrophy is *** media with effusion is defined as the observation of middle-ear effusion at consultations three months *** must be evaluated(using an age-appropriate audiometry technique)before and after treatment,so as not to miss another underlying cause of deafness(*** deafness).Craniofacial dysmorphism,respiratory allergy and gastro-oesophageal reflux all favour the development of *** a certain number of medications(antibiotics,corticoids,antihistamines,mucokinetic agents,and nasal decongestants)can be used to treat OME,they are not reliably effective and rarely provide long-term *** benchmark treatment for OME is placement of tympanostomy tubes(TTs)and(in some cases)adjunct *** TTs rapidly normalize hearing and effectively prevent the development of cholesteatoma in the middle *** contrast,TTs do not prevent progression towards tympanic atrophy or a retraction *** enhances the effectiveness of *** children with adenoid hypertrophy,adenoidectomy is indicated before the age of 4 but can be performed later when OME is identified by nasal *** must be followed up until OME has disappeared completely,so that any complications are not missed.

Rigid esophagoscopy combined with angle endoscopy for treatment of superior mediastinal foreign bodies penetrating into the esophagus caused by neck trauma: A case report
