An insight on occurrence of Fe-rich spherules from the Central Indian Ocean Basin(CIOB)provides an understanding of their distribution at a water depth of>5,000 *** the present study,Fe-rich spherules are identified to occur in two different sediment types(i.e.,siliceous and pelagic)and tectonic settings(*** seamounts and fracture zones).These are single spheres or aggregates,of different sizes(63 to 390μm)and show textural variability(smooth/quenched,brickwork,corkscrew,interlocking and dendritic).A comparative study based on physical morphology and chemical composition suggests a common mechanism of *** association of spherules with fracture zones(FZ)and seamounts signifies that morpho-tectonic features play an important role in fluid-driven *** on the evidence and geologic conditions existing in the basin,we conclude that molten fuel-coolant interaction(MFCI)coupled with submarine hydrothermal exhalations could be an ideal mechanism for the formation of spherules and *** accretion of the spherules on the surface sediments could be a result of recent volcanic phenomena,while those occurring at different depths(280-355,and 460-475 cm-bsf)within the sediment core indicate two different *** study provides a global implication in understanding fluid-driven magmatism in a deep-sea intraplate environment.

Petrographical and mineral chemistry evidence to delineate the source/sources of the Central Indian Ocean Basin pumices

We present data pertaining to mineral assemblages and composition of the Central Indian Ocean Basin(CIOB)*** groups of pumices were identified considering the presence of phenocrysts of plagioclase,clinopyroxene,orthopyroxene,hornblende and biotite together with the occurrence of quartz and ***,fayalite and ulvospinelare reported for the first time from these *** the eight groups,the modal percentage of the constituents are phenocrysts 3%to 19%(avg 9.6%),silicic glass 33%to 54%(avg 43%)and the rest is *** on the above factors we have identified the possible sources of the CIOB *** mineral compositions of plagioclase,pyroxenes,and biotite of the CIOB pumices were compared with those of Krakatau and *** of the plagioclase and pyroxene compositions resemble the Haranggoal Dacite Tuff of Toba and *** the mineral assemblages and compositions,there are pumices which do not correlate to any of the above eruptions and are probably from yet unidentified source/*** sources could either be from nearby terrestrial volcanoes or intraplate seamounts present in the *** a global context,it is viable that petrological characteristics could be used as initial criteria to determine the source of pumices that occur at abyssal depths in the world ocean.

Frequency-domain stability criteria for SISO and MIMO nonlinear feedback systems with constant and variable time-delays

New frequency-domain criteria are proposed for the L2-stability of both nonlinear single-input-single-output （SISO） and nonlinear multiple-input-multiple-output （MIMO） feedback systems, described by nonlinear integral equations. For SISO systems, the feedback block is a constant scalar gain in product with a linear combination of first-and-third-quadrant scalar nonlinearities （FATQNs） with time-delay argument functions; and, for MIMO systems, it is a constant matrix gain in product with a linear combination of vector FATQNs also with time-delay argument functions. In both the cases, the delay function in the arguments of the nonlinearities may be, in general, i） zero, ii） a constant, iii） variable-time and iv） fixed-history （only for SISO systems）. The stability criteria are derived from certain recently introduced algebraic inequalities concerning the scalar and vector nonlinearities, and involve the causal＋anticausal O＇Shea-Zames-Falb multiplier function （scalar for SISO systems and matrix for MIMO systems）. Its time-domain gl-norm is constrained by the coefficients and characteristic parameters （CPs） of the nonlinearities and, in the case of the time-varying delay, by its rate of variation also. The stability criteria, which are independent of Lyapunov-Krasovskii or Lyapunov-Razumikhin functions and do not seem to be derivable by invoking linear matrix inequalities, seem to be the first of their kind. Two numerical examples for each of SISO and MIMO systems illustrate the criteria.

Self-Organized Fractal Seismicity and b-Value of Aftershocks of the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake, Nepal

The Gorkha Earthquake that occurred on 25th April 2015 was a long anticipated, low angle thrust-faulting shallow event in Central Nepal that devastated the mountainous southern rim of the High Himalayan range. The earthquake was felt throughout central and eastern Nepal, much of the Ganges River plain in northern India, and northwestern Bangladesh, as well as in the southern parts of the Plateau of Tibet and western Bhutan. Two large aftershocks, with magnitudes 6.6 and 6.7, occurred in the region within one day of the main event, and several dozen smaller aftershocks occurred in the region during the succeeding days. In this study, we have analyzed the 350 aftershocks of the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake of Mw 7.8 to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of b-value and the fractal correlation dimension. The b-value is found to be 0.833 ± 0.035 from the Gutenberg-Richter relation by the least squares method and 0.95 ± 0.05 by the maximum likelihood method, indicating high stress bearing source zone. The spatial and temporal correlation dimension is estimated to be 1.07 ± 0.028 and 0.395 ± 0.0027 respectively. Spatial correlation dimension suggests a heterogeneous distribution of earthquake epicenters over a linear structure in space, while the temporal correlation dimension suggests clustering of aftershock activity in the time domain. The spatial variation of the b-value reveals that the b-value is high in the vicinity of the mainshock which is due to the sudden release of stress energy in the form of seismic waves. The spatial distribution of correlation dimension further confirms a linear source in the source zone as it varies from 0.8-1.0 in most of the region. We have also studied the temporal variation of b-value and correlation dimension that shows positive correlation for about first 15 days, then a negative correlation for next 45 days and after that, a positive correlation. An Assessment of Potential Economic Gain from Weather Forecast Based Irrigation Scheduling for Marginal Farmers in Karnataka, Southern State in India

This study is aimed to assess the usefulness of weather forecasts for irrigation scheduling in crops to economize water use. The short-term gains for the farmers come from reducing costs of irrigation with the help of advisory for when not to irrigate because rain is predicted (risk-free because the wrong forecast only delays irrigation within tolerance). Here, a quantitative assessment of saving (indirect income) if irrigation is avoided as rain is imminent (as per forecast), using a five-year archived forecast data over Karnataka state at hobli (a cluster of small villages) level is presented. Estimates showed that the economic benefits to the farmers from such advisories were significant. The potential gain in annual income from such forecast-based irrigation scheduling was of the order of 10% - 15%. Our analysis also indicated that the use of advisory by a small percentage of more than 10 million marginal farmers (landholding < 3 acres) in Karnataka could lead to huge cumulative savings of the order of many crores.

Noise and vibration measurements in a Viking military vehicle

Characterization of Source Parameters and Some Empirical Relations between Them for Kachchh Region, Gujarat, India: Implication of January 26, 2001 Bhuj Earthquake and Its Aftershock Sequence

Study of source parameters of small to moderate and large earthquakes is important to understand the differences and similarities between dynamic ruptures of different earthquakes and clarifying the scaling relations. In the present study, we have characterized source parameters and presented new and revised empirical relationships between various source parameters for Kachchh region of Gujarat, India to facilitate to draw first-order conclusions regarding the trends in the region. We have studied total 202 aftershocks of shallow-focus (hypo central depth less than 40 km) and moderate magnitude recorded over the Kachchh region during January 2001 to December 2012 by different seismological observatories of India Meteorological Department. We have adopted the spectral technique for source parameter estimation, where S-wave displacement spectra are considered and applied Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to compute displacement spectra. We have followed the Brune’s source model for our estimation and the estimated values of source parameters show close approximation to the global values. While derived empirical relations between different source parameters, they demonstrate direct or inverse proportion to linear or power scale. Interrelation between seismic moment, rupture parameters, corner frequency and radiated seismic energy can be summarized as , , and ER μ M0 and ER μ Mw for our analysis. Stress drop distribution over the Kachchh region is very scattered and due to its peculiar behavior, it is difficult to derive its empirical relation with other source parameters. Sufficient accuracy on measuring source parameters like corner frequency stress drop, rupture dimensions, radiated seismic energy etc. helps to understand earthquake processes in the region. Development of an aftershock occurrence model calibrated for Turkey and the resulting likelihoods

This paper presents the calibration of Omori’s aftershock occurrence rate model for Turkey and the resulting likelihoods. Aftershock occurrence rate models are used for estimating the probability of an aftershock that exceeds a specific magnitude threshold within a time interval after the mainshock. Critical decisions on the post-earthquake safety of structures directly depend on the aftershock hazard estimated using the occurrence model. It is customary to calibrate models in a region-specific manner. These models depend on rate parameters(a, b, c and p) related to the seismicity characteristics of the investigated region. In this study, the available well-recorded aftershock sequences for a set of Mw ≥ 5.9 mainshock events that were observed in Turkey until 2012 are considered to develop the aftershock occurrence model. Mean estimates of the model parameters identified for Turkey are a =-1.90, b = 1.11, c = 0.05 and p = 1.20. Based on the developed model, aftershock likelihoods are computed for a range of different time intervals and mainshock magnitudes. Also, the sensitivity of aftershock probabilities to the model parameters is investigated. Aftershock occurrence probabilities estimated using the model are expected to be useful for post-earthquake safety evaluations in Turkey.
