Litterfall production and nutrient return in different-aged Chinese fir(Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantations in South China

The amounts of litter produced and nutrients returned play a fundamental role in the productivity and biogeochemical and nutrient cycling of forest *** monitored annual litterfall production, nutrient return,and monthly dynamics over a one-year period in Chinese fir plantations aged 10, 22, and 34 years. Our objective was to quantify litterfall and nutrient return over a complete harvest rotation of Chinese fir. Annual litterfall production increased with stand age and was recorded as（3,294.6 ± 360.4）,（3,733.9 ± 211.2）, and（4,876.1 ± 212.8） kg ha-1a-1in stands aged 10, 22 and 34 years, respectively. Total litter production was significantly greater in the stand aged34 years than in the stand aged 10 years（p ／ 0.05）. With the exception of miscellaneous components, needle litterfall constituted the highest proportion（27.5–43.6 %）, followed by branches/twigs（9.5–16.6 %）. In all three plantations,annual total nutrient return to soil was in the order of C（1,119.95–2,709.05 kg ha-1a-1） [ N（39.32–62.04 kg ha-1a-1） [ K（15.95–22.44 kg ha-1a-1） [ P（1.30–1.63 kg ha-1a-1）. C, N, K and P input to soil was significantly lower in the 10-year-old stand in comparison to the 22- and34-year-old stands（p ／ 0.05）. Litterfall production and nutrient return（C, N and K） followed similar patterns, and C and N input to soil was significantly related to litterfall production（needle, branch and total litterfall）. C, N, P and K input to soil and total litterfall production were mainly driven by needle litterfall.

Edible insects in China： Utilization and prospects

The use of edible insects has a long history in China, where they have been consumed for more than 2000 years. In general, the level of acceptance is high for the consumption of insects in China. Many studies on edible insects have been conducted in the last 20 years, and the scope of the research includes the culture ofentomophagy and the identification, nutritional value, farming and breeding of edible insects, in addition to food production and safety. Currently, 324 species of insects from 11 orders are documented that are either edible or associated with entomophagy in China, which include the common edible species, some less commonly consumed species and some medicinal insects. How- ever, only approximately 10 to 20 types of insects are regularly consumed. The nutritional values for 174 species are available in China, including edible, feed and medicinal species. Although the nutritional values vary among species, all the insects examined contain pro- tein, fat, vitamins and minerals at levels that meet human nutritional requirements. Edible insects were, and continue to be, consumed by different ethnic groups in many parts of China. People directly consume insects or food products made from insects. The processing of products from insect protein powder, oil and chitin, and the development of healthcare foods has been studied in China. People also consume insects indirectly by eating livestock that were fed insects, which may be a more acceptable pathway to use insects in human diets. Although limited, the data on the food safety of insects indicate that insects are safe for food or feed. Incidences of allergic reactions after consuming silkworm pupae, cicadas and crickets have been reported in China. Insect farming is a unique breeding industry in rural China and is a source of income for local people. Transcriptome-based identification and expression analysis of the glutathione S-transferase(GST)family in tree peony reveals a likely role in anthocyanin transport

For red-flowered cultivars of tree peony(Paeonia suffruticosa),anthocyanin content is a critical factor determining the different petal *** S-transferases(GSTs)are ubiquitous and multifunctional conjugating proteins that may be responsible for the transport of anthocyanin pigments from the cytoplasm to *** underlying function of the GST family in tree peony,however,remains *** this study,we systematically isolated and identified a total of 54 putative full-length Ps GST genes through a combination of bioinformatics approaches from transcriptome *** phylogenetic analyses revealed extensive differentiation in their coding sequences and divided them into 10 of the 14 known classes of plant *** phylogenetic relationships,evolutionary characteristics,protein domain,and motif organization were clearly conserved among the different phylogenetic *** results of the RNA-seq and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction experiments exhibited extensive variation in gene expression profiles among different developmental stages and ***,the phylogenetic relationships,expression profiles,protein interactions,weighted gene co-expression network analysis,and correlation analysis results suggested that PsGSTF3(Unigene 0064200)is a candidate participant in anthocyanin transport and the promotion of pigment accumulation,exhibiting a strong positive correlation with anthocyanin content among different tissues(r=0.908**)and an increasing rate of anthocyanin content during the flower developmental process(r=0.961*).These results furthered our understanding of the transport and accumulation functions of the GST family as well as the enhancement of tree peony breeding through molecular biology techniques.

Anatomical characteristics of fusoid cells and vascular bundles in Fargesia yunnanensis leaves

As of today, the functions of fusoid cell, and the transport and loading pathways of photoassimilate in bamboo leaves are still not clear. In this paper, the leaves of Fargesia yunnanensis from a greenhouse and the wild were respectively used as samples to analyze the anatom- ical characteristics of fusoid cells and vascular bundles. The results showed that the bamboo leaves from green- house got shorter and thinner with fewer layers of palisade parenchyma cells than those from the wild. The volumes of fusoid ceils were also increased. Fusoid cells originated from a huge parenchyma cell as testified by the observed nuclei. Several fusoid cells usually formed one cell com- plex close to the midrib. Crystals were detected in fusoid cells but no pits or plasmodesmata on their walls, sug- gesting that fusoid cells had the function of regulating water. The presence of fusoid cells determined the major difference between a leaf blade and sheath. There were prominent chloroplasts with simple stroma lamellae in the parenchymatous bundle sheath cells and starch grains were also observed in these chloroplast. Photoassimilates could be transported across vascular bundle sheath via symplas- mic pathways for an abundant of plasmodesmata in sheath cell walls, and transported into phloem tube by apoplastic pathway as there were no pits in the walls of companion cells and phloem tubes.

Effect of slope position on leaf and fine root C,N and P stoichiometry and rhizosphere soil properties in Tectona grandis plantations

Little is known about C-N-P stoichiometries and content in teak(Tectona grandis)plantations in South China,which are mostly sited on hilly areas with lateritic soil,and the effect of slope position on the accumulation of these elements in trees and rhizosphere *** we analyzed the C,N,P content and stoichiometry in leaves,fine roots and rhizosphere soils of trees on the upper and lower slopes of a 12-year-old teak *** Kraft classification system of tree status was used to sample dominant,subdominant and mean trees at each slope *** results showed that the C,N and P contents in leaves were higher than in fine roots and rhizosphere *** lowest C/N,C/P and N/P ratios were found in rhizosphere soils,and the C/N and C/P ratios in fine roots were higher than in *** accumulation in leaves,fine roots and rhizosphere soils were significantly influenced by slope position and tree class with their interaction mainly showing a greater effect on rhizosphere *** C content and C/N ratio,fine root C and P contents,and C/N and C/P ratios all increased distinctly with declining slope *** contents of organic matter(SOM),ammonium(NH4+-N),nitrate-nitrogen(NO3--N)and available potassium(AK)in rhizosphere soils were mainly enriched on upper slopes,but exchange calcium(ECa),available phosphorus(AP),and pH were relatively *** in the C,N and P stoichiometries in trees were mainly attributed to the differences in rhizosphere soil properties.N and P contents showed significant positive linear relationships between leaf and rhizosphere soil,and C content negative linear correlation among leaves,fine roots and rhizosphere *** properties of rhizosphere soils,particularly C/N and NH4+-N,had significant effects on the leaf nutrients in trees on the upper ***,rhizosphere soil properties mainly influenced fine root nutrients on the lower slope,and soil AK was the major influencing ***,these

Seasonal dynamics of foliar δ^(13)C and nutrient concentration of Chinese chastetree and spine jujube in foothill rock outcrop habitat of the southern Taihang Mountains, Central China

In this study, in situ investigation was conducted on Chinese chastetree(Vitex negundo var. heterophylla)and spine jujube(Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa) during early, developed, and closing succession stages. Monthly data were recorded for foliar δ^(13)C values and foliar N, P,and K concentrations from May to October. Foliar δ^(13)C values declined with time and differences by succession stage varied by species. Older spine jujube displayed higher foliar N concentration while foliar P concentration was inversely related with N. Chinese chastetree had lower foliar K concentration than spine jujube. Foliar C/N ratio declined during the dry season and increased in the wet season. Foliar N/P ratio increased during the dry season and declined to its initial level until October, when it increased again. Foliar δ^(13)C value was positively correlated with foliar N concentration. Foliar P and K concentrations were positively correlated to each other. In conclusion, the two shrubs had contrasting strategies of water use efficiency during their succession, but water use efficiency of both species was promoted by N availability and limited by P availability.

Chemical pre-treatments improve seed germination and seedling growth in Semecarpus kurzii:an ethnomedicinally important plant

Semecarpus kurzii *** an important ethnomedicinal plant used for curing tumours,inflammation,fever and pain,and is also a source of iso ricinoleic *** the present investigation,effect of chemical pretreatments on germination and seedling growth revealed significant *** pre-treatments could improve germination and treatment with KNO_3 （9.9 mM）was significantly superior（94%） to the untreated control（76%）.Mean daily germination varied among the treatments（0.90–4.14 seeds per day）,when compared with 2.27 seeds per day in *** germination time was significantly reduced from 22.14 days（control） to 16.40 days（19.8 mM KNO_3） and 17.16 days（1.45 mM GA_3）.Treatment with KNO_3（19.8 mM） and GA_3（1.45 and 2.90 mM）significantly reduced the time for 50% *** with higher concentrations of GA_3 and KNO_3 exhibited significantly faster germination initiation（11.0 and 12.0 days,respectively） over the control（17.0 days）.Seedling vigour index was not improved by *** treatments did not improve shoot growth,collar thickness,or number of seedling leaves; however,root growth was significantly improved over *** with GA_3（2.90 mM） promoted leaf elongation but reduced leaf width *** with KNO_3 and GA_3 could be recommended to obtain healthy seedlings for establishing new plantations of this important medicinal plant species.

No consistent daily variation in DNA methylation detected in Populus nigra leaves by methylation-sensitive amplification polymorphism analysis

DNA methylation, an epigenetic mechanism used by cells to control gene expression, has an important biological role in plant development and environmental fitness. Since plant DNA methylation is closely related to environmental conditions, variation during the day is expected. Here, in genetically identical plants of Populus nigra clone N46, DNA methylation changes in leaves over a 24 h period were detected using the methylation-sensitive amplification polymorphism method. The results showed different DNA methylation patterns in mature poplar leaves: not only in individuals at the same time, but also in samples at each of the six time during the day. In addition, night samples had a higher percentage of methylation than in morning samples. However, no statistically significant differences were found among the samples gathered at different times. Similar results were obtained for three other P. nigra clones with different genetic backgrounds. Real time qPCR showed that the DNA methyltransferase genes Pt-MET1 and Pt-SOM1 involved in CG DNA methylation in poplar were stable over a 24 h period in leaves of P. nigra N46 compared with circadian-controlled genes. That could be part of the reason that methylation of CCGG sites is stable in those leaves. That DNA methylation differed even in genetically identical plants indicates the specificity of DNA methylation changes in their genomes. No statistically significant differences in methylation changes were found between day and night, suggesting that DNA methylation is more stable than expected and is unlikely to be involved in circadian regulation in plants.
