This paper raises, for the first time, with a model reading passage, a three-layer passage reading method （3LPRM in brief ） in English reading： reading beyond paragraphs; reading within paragraphs and sentences, and reading with coherences of words and expressions. The paper illustrates the definition, contents, characteristics and application of the method which is easy to master and apply. The paper aims at supplying readers especially beginners of E/S/FL （English as second/foreign language） with a practical passage reading method so as to improve their reading efficiency. The paper has some practical significance and directing value.

Although contrastive move analysis of article abstracts has been a highlight,few studies focus on abstracts of natural sci⁃ence *** compensate for this gap,this study,based on IMRD model,focuses on aquatic biology abstracts and contrasts those by native English speakers and those by Chinese *** quantitative and qualitative studies,it reveals their dif⁃ferences and similarities in terms of the frequency of different moves,sentence length and move length *** similari⁃ties and differences can be explained by the face culture of China,the different language proficiency and the common convention of academic abstract.

The Politeness Principle proposed by Leech complements Grice'Cooperative Principle to a certain extent in explaining the indirectness of language. However,the nature of politeness is its *** by various factors such as social and cultural ones,the appropriateness of politeness at utterance level is affected by the appropriateness of the pragmatic distance between the participants. Different from the interpersonal relationships,pragmatic distance is calculated and determined in the process of communication varying with the variation of the communicative factors. Pragmatic distance is dynamic and can be maintained and altered by participants by using certain linguistic expressions to achieve the appropriateness of politeness in communication.

As a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural activity, translation aims to communicate information. And the basis of this communication lies in the common understanding of cultural backgrounds of the target language as well as the source language. By analyzing the cultural features of English and Chinese, this paper mainly suggests that in the process of English-Chinese translation, we should not only consider the factors of language itself but also emphasize the analysis of cultural differences so that we can avoid mistranslating as much as possible and realize the most appropriate translation and the true purpose of communication.

A Study on Listening Anxiety and Listening Proficiency

Three instruments are adopted including the foreign language Listening Anxiety Scales(FLLAS), a listening metacognitive strategy-use questionnaire and a CET-4 listening test. The results indicate that a large proportion of students report experiencing listening anxiety. There is significantly negative correlation between listening anxiety and listening proficiency and there is significant difference in the use of metacognitive strategies across three listening anxiety levels.
