Prevalence of Salmonella in Fresh Produce Tomatoes Sold in Open Market in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

Tomato is a widely consumed vegetable in Burkina Faso and throughout the world. However, when handled improperly, it can serve as a vector of pathogen transmission to human if ingested raw or through cross-contamination with cooked food. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Salmonella spp from tomatoes sold in the markets of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and characteristics of vending conditions. One hundred and ninety-eight (198) different tomato samples were randomly purchased from one hundred and thirteen (113) different vendors in the markets of Ouagadougou. The samples were examined and classified into three categories according to their texture and the level of deterioration. The prevalence of Salmonella spp identification was determined using standard microbiological methods. A survey was conducted using a questionnaire on transport and vending conditions for tomatoes. In total, Salmonella prevalence was 19.19% in all tomato’s samples analyzed and was 18.18% for intact category, 22.73% in D2 category and 16.67% in category D4. The survey revealed poor transport and sales conditions for the majority of tomato sellers. The present study revealed the presence of Salmonella in tomatoes samples. These results highlight the risk associated with the consumption of tomatoes if hygienic practices are not respected during tomatoes handling and preparation. The results of the study also show the need to wash tomatoes systematically after purchase with a disinfectant, especially tomatoes sold in open markets in developing countries.

Background: Clinical opportunistic screening is a cost-effective cancer screening modality. This study aimed to establish an easy-to-use diagnostic model serving as a risk stratification tool for identification of individuals with malignant gastric lesions for opportunistic ***: We developed a questionnaire-based diagnostic model using a joint dataset including two clinical cohorts from northern and southern China. The cohorts consisted of 17,360 outpatients who had undergone upper gastrointestinal endoscopic examination in endoscopic clinics. The final model was derived based on unconditional logistic regression, and predictors were selected according to the Akaike information criterion. External validation was carried out with 32,614 participants from a community-based randomized controlled ***: This questionnaire-based diagnostic model for malignant gastric lesions had eight predictors, including advanced age, male gender, family history of gastric cancer, low body mass index, unexplained weight loss, consumption of leftover food, consumption of preserved food, and epigastric pain. This model showed high discriminative power in the development set with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.791 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.750–0.831). External validation of the model in the general population generated an AUC of 0.696 (95% CI: 0.570–0.822). This model showed an ideal ability for enriching prevalent malignant gastric lesions when applied to various ***: This easy-to-use questionnaire-based model for diagnosis of prevalent malignant gastric lesions may serve as an effective prescreening tool in clinical opportunistic screening for gastric cancer.

Objective： To investigate the microR NAs（miR NAs） expression profile of acute myocardial infarction（AMI） rats and the regulating effects of Huoxue Anxin Recipe（活血安心方, HAR） on angiogenesis-related miR NAs and genes. Methods： Forty-five Wistar rats were randomly assigned to 3 groups according to a random number table： sham, AMI, and AMI＋HAR groups（15 in each group）. AMI rats were established by ligation of the left descending coronary artery. HAR was intragastrically administered to rats of the AMI＋HAR group for successive 21 days since modeling, meanwhile the same volume of 0.9% normal saline was administered to rats of the sham and AMI groups. Doppler echocardiography was used for noninvasive cardiac function test. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used to observe the histopathological change. miR NAs expression profile was detected by quantitative realtime polymerase chain reaction（qR T-PCR）. The mR NA and protein expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor（VEGF）, and a target gene of miR-210 was further detected by qR T-PCR and Western blot, respectively. The microvessels density of myocardium was evaluated by CD31 immunostaining. Results： Compared with the sham group, ejection fraction（EF） and fractional shortening（FS） values were decreased significantly in the AMI group（P〈0.01）, while the infarction area and the interstitial collagen deposition were increased obviously. As for the AMI＋HAR group, EF and FS values were increased significantly（P〈0.05 vs. AMI group）, and the infarction area was reduced and the interstitial collagen deposition were alleviated significantly. Total of 23 miR NAs in the AMI group expressed differently by at least 1.5 folds compared with those in the sham group; 5 miR NAs in the AMI＋HAR group expressed differently by at least 1.5 folds compared with those in the AMI group. The birth of new genes in genomes is an important evolutionary event. Several studies reveal that new genes in animals tend to be preferentially expressed in male reproductive tissues such as testis （Betrdn et ah, 2002; Begun et ah, 2007; Dubruille et ah, 2012）, and thus an ＂out of testis＂ hypothesis for the emergence of new genes has been proposed （Vinckenbosch et ah, 2006; Kaessmann, 2010）. However, such phenomena have not been examined in plant species. Here, by employing a phylostratigraphic method, we dated the origin of protein-coding genes in rice and Arabidopsis thaliana and observed a num- ber of young genes in both species. These young genes tend to encode short extracellular proteins, which may be involved in rapid evolving processes, such as reproductive barriers, species specification, and anti- microbial processes. Further analysis of transcriptome age indexes across different tissues revealed that male reproductive cells express a phylogenetically younger transcriptome than other plant tissues. Compared with sporophytic tissues, the young transcriptomes of the male gametophyte displayed greater complexity and diversity, which included a higher ratio of anti-sense and inter-genic transcripts, reflecting a pervasive transcription state that facilitated the emergence of new genes. Here, we propose that pollen may act as an ＂innovation incubator＂ for the birth of de novo genes. With cases of male-biased expression of young genes reported in animals, the ＂new genes out of the male＂ model revealed a common evolu- tionary force that drives reproductive barriers, species specification, and the upgrading of defensive mech- anisms against pathogens.

在新冠肺炎疫情期间,中国采取的管制封锁措施大幅减少了交通和工业排放,但农业排放没有受到影响,甚至有所增加.通过全国大气氨浓度地面监测、实时连续观测和卫星观测等手段,我们发现,新冠肺炎疫情管制措施实施期间中国大气氨浓度大范围显著增加,上升幅度在农村地区最为明显(增加22%),在城市和偏远地区变化不明显;而且,管控期间大气氨浓度上升幅度与2015~2019年相同月份相比更大.基于大气化学模式模拟发现,中国北方大气氨浓度上升主要是由农业氨排放增加所致.随着未来我国二氧化硫和氮氧化物等酸性气体排放控制的强化,农业氨排放的协同减排对于进一步削减大气PM污染、提升空气质量尤为重要.进一步分析表明,疫情期间50%农业氨排放可有效抵消氨浓度上升造成的二次无机气溶胶的形成.

Remarkable progress has been made in developing intramuscular vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2);however,they are limited with respect to eliciting local immunity in the respiratory tract,which is the primary infection site for *** overcome the limitations of intramuscular vaccines,we constructed a nasal vaccine candidate based on an influenza vector by inserting a gene encoding the receptor-binding domain(RBD)of the spike protein of SARSCoV-2,named CA4-d NS1-n CoV-RBD(d NS1-RBD).A preclinical study showed that in hamsters challenged 1d after single-dose vaccination or 9 months after booster vaccination,d NS1-RBD largely mitigated lung pathology,with no loss of body ***,such cellular immunity is relatively unimpaired for the most concerning SARS-Co V-2 variants,especially for the latest Omicron *** addition,this vaccine also provides cross-protection against H1N1 and H5N1 influenza *** protective immune mechanism of d NS1-RBD could be attributed to the innate immune response in the nasal epithelium,local RBD-specific T cell response in the lung,and RBD-specific Ig A and Ig G ***,this study demonstrates that the intranasally delivered d NS1-RBD vaccine candidate may offer an important addition to the fight against the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and influenza infection,compensating limitations of current intramuscular vaccines.

Mechanical properties of flax fibres treated by alkaline,enzyme and steam-heat

In recent years there has been interest in using flax fibres to produce composites because of a number of attributes, including low density, biodegradability and high mechanical properties. It was found that treatment of flax fibres may be required to improve the bond quality with a resin. These treatments also have an impact on the properties of the fibres themselves. The objective of this project was to evaluate the impact of three treatment methods on the mechanical properties of flax fibres. The three treatment methods were alkaline, enzyme and steam-heat. After treatment, flax fibres were tested in tension using a universal test machine. Results showed that tensile strength and Young's modulus of flax fibre can be enhanced significantly by the three treatment methods, compared with untreated flax fibres. Enzyme treatment was shown to be the best approach to improve mechanical properties of flax fibre than alkaline and steam-heat treatment.

China Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network for Pets(CARPet)was established in 2021 to monitor the resist-ance profiles of clinical bacterial pathogens from companion *** 2018 to 2021,we recovered and tested 4,541 isolates from dogs and cats across 25 Chinese provinces,with Escherichia coli(18.5%)and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius(17.8%)being the most predominant bacterial *** Enterobacterales were highly susceptible to tigecycline,meropenem,colistin,and amikacin(70.3%-100.0%),but showed moderate resistance to ampicillin,ceftriaxone,doxycycline,florfenicol,levofloxacin,enrofloxacin,and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole(29.3%-56.7%).About 66.3%of Acinetobacter *** resistant to florfenicol,with relatively low resistance to another 11 antibiot-ics(1.2%-23.3%).The Pseudomonas *** high susceptibility to colistin(91.7%)and meropenem(88.3%).The coagulase-positive Staphylococcus *** higher resistance rates to most antimicrobial agents than coagulase-negative Staphylococcus ***,over 90.0%of Staphylococcus *** susceptible to linezolid,dapto-mycin and rifampin,and no vancomycin-resistant isolates were *** isolates demonstrated higher resistance rates to most antimicrobial agents than *** *** *** showed low resistance to most antimicrobial agents except for doxycycline(78.2%)and azithromycin(68.8%).Overall,the tested clinical isolates showed high rates of resistance to commonly used antimicrobial agents in companion ***,it is crucial to strengthen the monitoring of bacterial resistance in *** timely and effectively collecting,analyzing,and reporting antimicrobial resistance dynamics in pets,the CARPet network will become a powerful platform to provide scientific guidance for both pet medical care and public health.
