Potential distributional shifts in North America of allelopathic invasive plant species under climate change models

Predictive studies play a crucial role in the study of biological invasions of terrestrial plants under possible climate change *** species are recognized for their ability to modify soil microbial communities and influence ecosystem ***,we focused on six species of allelopathic flowering plants-Ailanthus altissima,Casuarina equisetifolia,Centaurea stoebe ***,Dioscorea bulbifera,Lantana camara,and Schinus terebinthifolia-Xhat are invasive in North America and examined their potential to spread further during projected climate *** used Species Distribution Models(SDMs)to predict future suitable areas for these species in North America under several proposed future climate *** and Maxent were used to develop SDMs,estimate current distributions,and predict future areas of suitable climate for each *** with the greatest predicted suitable climate in the future include the northeastern and the coastal northwestern regions of North *** size estimations demonstrate the possibility of extreme range loss for these invasives in the southeastern United States,while new areas may become suitable in the northeastern United States and southeastern *** findings show an overall northward shift of suitable climate during the next few decades,given projected changes in temperature and *** results can be utilized to analyze potential shifts in the distribution of these invasive species and may aid in the development of conservation and management plans to target and control dissemination in areas at higher risk for potential future invasion by these allelopathic species.

Equatorial Wave Expansion of Instantaneous Flows for Diagnosis of Equatorial Waves from Data:Formulation and Illustration

This paper presents a method for expanding horizontal flow variables in data using the free solutions to the shallow-water system as a basis set. This method for equatorial wave expansion of instantaneous flows（EWEIF） uses dynamic constraints in conjunction with projections of data onto parabolic cylinder functions to determine the amplitude of all equatorial *** allows us to decompose an instantaneous wave flow into individual equatorial waves with a presumed equivalent depth without using temporal or spatial filtering a *** sets of EWEIF analyses are presented. The first set is to confirm that EWEIF is capable of recovering the individual waves constructed from theoretical equatorial wave solutions under various scenarios. The other two sets demonstrate the ability of the EWEIF method to derive time series of individual equatorial waves from instantaneous wave fields without knowing a priori exactly which waves exist in the data as well as their spatial and temporal scales using outputs of an equatorial β-channel shallow-water model and ERA-Interim data. The third set of demonstrations shows, for the first time, the continuous evolutions of individual equatorial waves in the stratosphere whose amplitude is synchronized with the background zonal wind as predicted by quasi-biennial oscillation theory.

Despite known effects of urban heat island(UHI)on building energy consumption such as increased cooling energy demand,typical building energy simulation(BES)practices lack a standardized approach to incorporate UHI into building energy *** seasonal and diurnal variation of UHI makes the task of incorporating UHI into BES an especially challenging task,often limited by the availability of detailed hourly temperature data at building *** paper addresses the temporal variation of UHI by deriving four normalized UHI indicators that can successfully capture the seasonal and diurnal variation of *** accuracy of these indicators was established across four climate types including hot and humid(Miami,FL),hot and dry(Los Angeles,CA),cold and dry(Denver,CO),and cold and humid(Chicago,IL),and three building types including office,hospital,and *** four indicators are mean summer daytime UHI,mean summer nighttime UHI,mean winter daytime UHI,and mean winter nighttime UHI,which can accurately predict cooling,heating,and annual energy consumption with mean relative error of less than 1%.Not only do these indicators simplify the application of UHI to BES but also,they provide a new paradigm for UHI data collection,storage,and usage,specifically for the purpose of BES.

DNA methylation has been identified as a powerful and activity-dependent regulator of changes in the brain that may underlie neuroadaptations in response to various types of stimuli,including exposure to drugs of ***,the medial prefrontal cortex(mPFC)projections to the nucleus accumbens(NAc)are critically important for reinstated cocaine-seeking in a rodent model of cocaine *** circuitry undergoes several epigenetic modifications following cocaine exposure,including changes in DNA methylation that are associated with drug-seeking *** have previously shown that methyl supplementation via L-Methionine(MET)administration attenuates cocaine-seeking behavior and reverses expression and methylation patterns of the immediate early gene c-fos,suggesting that MET may act by altering the excitability of this circuitry during cocaine *** the current study,male rats were microinjected with an adeno-associated virus overexpressing halorhodopsin in the mPFC,optical fibers were surgically implanted into the NAc,and the rats were given injections of MET *** underwent acquisition of cocaine self-administration(0.75 mg/kg/infusion,2-h sessions)followed by extinction training in the absence of drug-paired *** reinstatement tests were conducted:cue-induced reinstatement without optogenetic manipulations and cocaine-primed reinstatement with optogenetic inhibition of mPFC-to-NAc *** were no group differences before the cocaine-primed reinstatement session,and all groups showed robust cue-induced *** rats treated with MET and rats that received mPFC-to-NAc inhibition showed an abolishment of cocaine-primed reinstatement,suggesting that systemic methyl supplementation may act through this critical circuity.

Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs),a family of highly porous materials possessing huge surface areas and feasible chemical tunability,are emerging as critical functional materials to solve the growing challenges associated with energy-water systems,such as water scarcity *** this contribution,the roles of MOFs are highlighted in electrochemical-based water applications(i.e.,reactions,sensing,and separations),where MOF-based functional materials exhibit outstanding performances in detecting/removing pollutants,recovering resources,and harvesting energies from different water *** with the pristine MOFs,the efficiency and/or selectivity can be further enhanced via rational structural modulation of MOFs(e.g.,partial metal substitution)or integration of MOFs with other functional materials(e.g.,metal clusters and reduced graphene oxide).Several key factors/properties that affect the performances of MOF-based materials are also reviewed,including electronic structures,nanoconfined effects,stability,conductivity,and atomic *** advancement in the fundamental understanding of these key factors is expected to shed light on the functioning mechanisms of MOFs(e.g.,charge transfer pathways and guest-host interactions),which will subsequently accelerate the integration of precisely designed MOFs into electrochemical architectures to achieve highly effective water remediation with optimized selectivity and long-term stability.

Biomechanical Investigation of Locked Plate Fixation with Suture Augmentation in a Comminuted Three-Part Proximal Humerus Fracture Model

Background: Locked plating of displaced proximal humerus fractures is a reliable fixation method. Greater tuberosity (GT) failure is a known complication that may occur in the early post-operative period. Despite postoperative immobilization, the rotator cuff continues to exert significant forces on fracture fragments. Our hypothesis is that suture augmentation will provide greater stability of the GT than locked plating alone. To prove this we developed a three-part proximal humerus fracture model to test fracture fixation. Methods: A biomechanical study was performed on nine fresh frozen cadaveric humeri, simulating a three-part proximal humerus fracture (Neer Classification). Rotator cuff tendon insertions were preserved to physiologically load the proximal humerus. The fracture was reduced and fixed with a locked plate alone or a locked plate with suture augmentation of the GT to the rotator cuff tendons. Biomechanical testing utilized a materials testing machine and a three-dimensional motion capture system to quantify interfragmentary motion under torsional loading as a function of fixation type. Results: Greater torsional stability was observed in the suture-augmented group compared to the plate only group (p = 0.0012). There were two catastrophic failures in the plate only group while none of the suture reinforced constructs failed. Conclusions: In our model, suture-augmentation of the GT to the rotator cuff provided greater stability than locked plating alone. The current study provides a biome-chanical basis for reinforcing locked plate constructs with sutures. The added stability afforded by suture-augmentation may mitigate rotator cuff forces in the clinical setting, avoiding fracture displacement in the early postoperative rehabilitation period.

Skeletal development and homeostasis in mammals are modulated by finely coordinated processes of migration, proliferation,differentiation, and death of skeletogenic cells originating from the mesoderm and neural crest. Numerous molecular mechanisms are involved in these regulatory processes, one of which is protein posttranslational modifications, particularly protein tyrosine phosphorylation(PYP). PYP occurs mainly through the action of protein tyrosine kinases(PTKs), modifying protein enzymatic activity, changing its cellular localization, and aiding in the assembly or disassembly of protein signaling complexes. Under physiological conditions, PYP is balanced by the coordinated action of PTKs and protein tyrosine phosphatases(PTPs).Dysregulation of PYP can cause genetic, metabolic, developmental, and oncogenic skeletal diseases. Although PYP is a reversible biochemical process, in contrast to PTKs, little is known about how this equilibrium is modulated by PTPs in the skeletal ***-genome sequencing has revealed a large and diverse superfamily of PTP genes(over 100 members) in humans, which can be further divided into cysteine(Cys)-, aspartic acid(Asp)-, and histidine(His)-based PTPs. Here, we review current knowledge about the functions and regulatory mechanisms of 28 PTPs involved in skeletal development and diseases;27 of them belong to class Ⅰ and Ⅱ Cys-based PTPs, and the other is an Asp-based PTP. Recent progress in analyzing animal models that harbor various mutations in these PTPs and future research directions are also discussed. Our literature review indicates that PTPs are as crucial as PTKs in supporting skeletal development and homeostasis.
