Aim: The problem of kernicterus in infants with bronze baby syndrome (BBS) has been reviewed on the basis of cases reported in the literature. In addition, a new case concerning an infant with severe Rh haemolytic disease, who presented with BBS and who has developed neurological manifestations of kernicterus with magnetic resonance images showing basal ganglia abnormalities, is presented. In this patient, the total serum bilirubin (TSB) concentration ranged from 18.0 to 22.8 mg/dl (306 to 388 μmol/l) and the bilirubin/albumin (B/A) ratio was 6.0 (mg/g) (6.8 is the value at which an exchange transfusion should be considered). The case presented is important due to the fact that kernicterus appeared after an exchange transfusion was performed when the TSB level reached 22.8mg/dl (388 μmol/l) on 6th day of life while the haematocrit was 30%. From this case and fromother cases reported in the literature, we must stress that, even if the level at which hyperbilirubinemia poses a threat remains undefined, BBS may constitute an additional risk of developing kernicterus. Conclusion: The possible strategies for implementing an approach to the management of hyperbilirubinemia (especially the haemolytic kind) in the presence of BBS may include an exchange transfusion carried out at lower TSB concentration than previously recommended or an early administration of Sn-mesoporphyrin.

Land use changes profoundly affect the equilibrium of soil organic carbon(soC)sequestration and greenhouse gas *** the current global climatic changes,it is vital to understand the influence of ecological restoration and conservation management on the dynamics of soC under different land uses,especially in erosion-endangered Loess ***,we investigated changes in soc through a suit of labile fractions,namely:light fraction organic C(LFOC),heavy fraction organic C(HFOC),coarse particulate organic C(CPOC),fine particulate organic C(FPOC),and dissolved organic C(DOC),from two forests i.e.,Robinia pseudoacacia(RP)and Platycladus orientalis(PO),with different ages,in comparison with farmland(FL).The SOC and STN contents significantly increased over 42 years in the RP forest where the contents of CPOC and FPOC were significantly higher than in the ***,total SOC and its labile fractions,in the studied land use types,significantly correlated with soil CacO3,pH,and STN contents,indicating their key roles in SoC *** results reported here from different vegetation with different ages provide a better understanding of sOC and STN alterations at different stages of vegetation *** findings suggest that long-term natural vegetation restoration could be an effective approach for SoC sequestration and soil conservation on the Loess soil.

AIM To present the current state-of-the art of molecular imaging in the management of patients affected by inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS A systematic review of the literature was performed in order to find important original articles on the role of molecular imaging in the management of patients affected by IBD. The search was updated until February 2016 and limited to articles in *** Fifty-five original articles were included in this review, highlighting the role of single photon emission tomography and positron emission tomography. CONCLUSION To date, molecular imaging represents a useful tool to detect active disease in IBD. However, the available data need to be validated in prospective multicenter studies on larger patient samples.

Background and Purpose -In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), oral anticoagulant therapy (OAT) is effective in reducing stroke and embolism. However, despite OAT, ischemic events do occur in some patients. Studies specifically addressing the identification of risk factors for ischemic events during well-conducted OAT are not available. In this study, we prospectively investigated the role of classic risk factors and homocysteine levels in the occurrence of ischemic complications in 364 AF patients on OAT. Methods -The quality of anticoagulation levels and the occurrence of bleeding and thrombotic events were recorded. Results -During follow-up (859 patient years) 21 patients had ischemic complicatio ns (rate 2.4×100 patient-years). Homocysteine plasma levels were higher in the se patients than in patients without ischemic complications during OAT (P < 0.01 ), whereas no difference was observed in relation to the quality of OAT. The pre sence of a history of previous ischemic events, hypertension, and homocysteine p lasma levels over the 90th percentile were all associated with an increased risk of ischemic events during OAT (odds ratio [OR]=7, 4.5, and 4.7, respectively) . The coexistence of these risk factors markedly increased the risk (OR=13.1; 95% CI, 3.7 to 45.7; P=0.001). Conclusion -In conclusion, our results indicate that AF patients with multiple risk factors may not be sufficiently protected by OAT , even when this is well conducted.

Biophotonics is an emerging multidisciplinary research area, embracing all light-based technologies applied to the life sciences and medicine [1-6]. The expression itself is the combination of the Greek syllables ＂bios＂ standing for life and ＂phos＂ standing for light. Photonics is the technical term for all methodologies and technologies utilizing photons over the whole spectrum from X-ray over the ultraviolet, visible and the infrared to the terahertz region, and its interaction with any matter. Beyond this definition, biophotonics is a scientific discipline of remarkable societal importance. As a part of photonics, it has proved to be an important enabling technology for accelerated progress in medicine and biotechnology. It can do so, because it originated at the interface of the most innovative academic disciplines of the last century, i.e., photonics, biotechnology and nanotechnologies. This field of research brings together scientists from different professions, such as physicists, biologists, pharmacists, medical doctors, etc. To work on common projects, they need to understand the ideas and the techniques of their counterparts.

93例春季角结膜炎患者的睫毛较长

Objective. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic conjunctivitis that affects children mainly in temperate areas, with exacerbations in spring and summer. Eyelashes provide natural protection for the eyes from sunshine, wind, and foreign bodies. These factors induce a worsening of signs and symptoms in VKC, whereas mechanical protection of the eyes produces relief. The aim of this study was to evaluate eyelash length in a large series of VKC patients and in age-and gender-matched healthy subjects. Methods. Upper eyelash length was measured in 93 VKC patients (mean age: 8.7 years; range: 4-18 years) with a digital caliper. History, clinical form, type of presentation, degree of severity, and drug therapy were evaluated. Skin tests and serum-specific immunoglobulin E for common allergens, serum-total immunoglobulin E, peripheral blood eosinophil counts, and serum eosinophil cationic protein were determined. Two age-and gender-matched control subjects for each VKC patient underwent the same eyelash measurement. Results. The upper eyelashes were significantly longer in VKC patients than in control subjects (mean ±SD: 8.9 ±1.17mm vs 7.9 ±1.07 mm). In healthy subjects, a negative correlation was found between eyelash length and age. With multivar iate analysis, unlike control subjects, the eyelash length in VKC patients did not correlate with age, was positively correlated with the degree of severity of VKC, and was negatively correlated with the use of topical cyclosporine. Conclusions. Patients with VKC had longer eyelashes than healthy matched subjects. The ocular inflammation, by unknown chemical mediators, was likely responsible for the excessive eyelash growth. The finding may represent a defensive mechanism against physical agents that might have a crucial role in the etiopathogenesis of this disease.
