Microbial transformations of toxic monomethylmercury(MMHg) and dissolved gaseous mercury(DGM) at the lower levels of the marine food web are not well understood, especially in oligotrophic and phosphorus-limited seas. To examine the effects of probable phosphorus limitation(~PP-limitation) on relations between mercury(Hg) fractions and microorganisms, we determined the total mercury(THg), total methylated mercury(MeHg), DGM, and microbiological and chemical parameters in the Central Adriatic Sea. Using statistical analysis, we assessed the potential microbial effects on Hg transformations and bioaccumulation. Only in the absence of ~PP-limitation conditions(^(NO–P)P-limitation) is MeHg significantly related to most chemical and microbial parameters, indicating metabolism-dependent Hg *** heterotrophic activity of low nucleic acid bacteria(abundant in oligotrophic regions)seems responsible for most of Hg methylation under ^(NO–P)P-limitation. Under these conditions,DGM is strongly related to microbial fractions and chlorophyll a, indicating biological DGM production, which is probably not metabolically induced, as most of these relations are also observed underPP-limitation. MMHg biomagnification was observed through an increased bioaccumulation factor from microseston to mesozooplankton. Our results indicate that Hgtransformations and uptake might be enhanced under ^(NO–P)P-limitation conditions, emphasizing their impact on the transfer of Hg to higher trophic levels.

A mass-balanced Ecopath model presents a quantitative description of the trophic structure,fl ow of energy and trophic interaction among ecological groups of an *** Ecopath with Ecosim(EwE)modeling program(Version 6.5)was used to develop a preliminary trophic model for a tropical freshwater *** total fi sh biomass was 6.245 t/km 2 and the highest trophic level of the reservoir was 3.362(for snakehead).The ecosystem is phytoplankton based because primary producers originated 68%and detritus originated 32%of the total fl ow from lower trophic *** gross effi ciency of the fi shery was 0.004,suggesting the ineffi ciency of the *** positive eff ect of phytoplankton and detritus on most of the other groups were evident from mixed trophic analysis while moderately higher ecotrophic effi ciency(EE)of phytoplankton shows the ecosystem’s potential bottom-up *** competition for the same resources among diff erent groups was also *** ratio of primary production/respiration(1.969)suggests that the ecosystem is at the developing stage and utmost contemplation should be given to concerned human *** low value of relative ascendancy(30.13)and overhead(69.87)reveals the stability of the ecosystem and some degrees of *** also predicts the presence of signifi cant strength in reserve of the system to withstand or overcome any ***,ecologically sustainable resource management plans should be implemented to ensure the sustainability of this reservoir resources.

Moringa oleifera is well known as a highly nutritious plant and a water purifier in fish *** fish has many impressive qualities making them very suitable for ***,this study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementation of Moringa oleifera aqueous extract(MOAE)at varying concentrations(0,100,200,and 400 mg/kg diet for 90 days)on growth performance,hematological,and some biochemical parameters of Nile ***,histological changes and immunohistochemical expression of caspase 3 in gills and livers were *** enhancements(P<0.05)in the final weight,weight gain,specific growth rate,red blood cells,hemoglobin,packed cell volume,white blood cells,and total serum protein were observed in fish fed 200 mg MOAE/kg diet compared with other ***,a significant reduction(P<0.05)of liver and kidney function tests and non-significant changes in lipid profile were *** the other hand,fish fed 400 mg MOAE/kg diet revealed disturbance in the corresponding *** histological degenerative changes were detected in the gills and liver of fish fed 400 mg MOAE/kg *** comparison,fish fed 200 mg MOAE/kg diet showed the best histo-architectures of these organs compared with other *** immune expressions of caspase 3 were determined where gills and liver of fish fed 400 mg MOAE/kg diet revealed extensive number of positive caspase 3 cells indicating severe apoptotic ***,a dietary MOAE at 200 mg/kg diet is recommended to improve the growth performance,hematological parameters,liver and kidney functions in Nile ***,caution must be considered when using MOAE at a concentration over 200 mg/kg diet.

Variation in the life-history traits of a Schilbid catfish,Clupisoma garua (Hamilton, 1822) in the coastal waters of southern Bangladesh

For the first time, the present study reports the life-history traits, comprising length-frequency distribution （LFD）, sex ratio （SR）, length-weight relationships （LWRs）, condition factors （CFs）, and relative growth （WR）, of Clupisoma garua in the coastal waters of Bangladesh. A total of 150 specimens ranging from 8.60 to 25.20 cm total length （TL） and 4.26 to 128.80 g body weight （BW） were collected using traditional fishing gear from August 2013 to July 2014. The overall sex ratio of males to females in the study did not differ significantly from the expected value of 1：1 （χ2=0.96, P〈0.05） but there were significant sex differences （P〈0.05） in the intercepts and slopes of graphs characterizing traits in C. garua. The calculated b values for the LWRs were 2.955, 2.893 and 2.927 for males, females and combined sexes, respectively, and there was negative allometric growth in all cases （b〈3）. The condition factors （KA, KF, KrR） and relative growth （WR） also did not differ significantly （P〈0.05） between the sexes. This study provides a useful tool for fishery specialists to evaluate the relative condition of fish and to initiate early management strategies and regulations for the sustainable management of the remaining stocks of this species in the entire coastal region of southern Bangladesh.

Fish species diversity in the Huanghe Estuary

This paper lists 50 fish specs in the Huanghe Estuary, which belong to 9 orders, 22 families and 37 genera. The paper describes the seasonal distributions of these fish species and the succession of the important fish species during the past 50 a. The authors discuss the main factors that have resulted in the changes in fish species diversity and the fishery resources. These include the overexploitation of the fishery and the sharp reduction in the fresh water discharges from the Huanghe River.

Assessment of dietary chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) fruit extract on growth performance, hemato-biochemical parameters, and mRNA levels of growth and appetite-related genes in goldfish (Carassius auratus)

In this study,the effect of oral administration of chaste tree fruit(CTF)extract was evaluated on growth performance,hematological indices,serum biochemical parameters,and the expression of growth and appetite-related genes in goldfish(Carassius auratus).The fry(N=300;2.40±0.12 g)were randomly dispersed into 12 aquaria and fed with different levels of CTF extract(0(control),0.5%,1.0%,and 1.5%)for 56 *** the end of the trial,the highest body weight gain and the lowest feed conversion ratio were observed in the fish fed with 1.5%CTF extract(P0.05).The levels of aspartate transaminase and lactate dehydrogenase were decreased by increasing the supplementation levels of CTF extract and the lowest values were obtained in 1.5%CTF extract diet(P<0.05).The expression of growth hormone,insulin-like growth factor 1,and ghrelin genes was significantly up-regulated in the fish fed with 1.5%CTF extract compared to other treatments(P<0.05).Overall,the enrichment of goldfish diet with 1.5%CTF extract could interfere positively in the growth-related traits and hematological parameters.

British Antarctic Survey(BAS)data collected near the Antarctic Peninsula area were used in this1988/1989 study on the length frequency of three Antarctic fish species(Pleuragramma antarcticum,Electrona antarctica and Protomyctophum bolini)showing that the standard length(SL)of *** from 26.0 mm to 161.0 mm,that the 26.0 mm to 54.0 mm SL juveniles could be considered tobe the age group 1 fish,and that the SL of *** ranged from 39.4 mm to 89.7 mm for themales and 48.0 mm to 118.0 mm for the females,which may contain at least 6 age *** ismore than previously *** had 29.2 mm to 60.2 mm SL and complicated age com-position.

Objective:To evaluate the effects of Capsosiphon fulvescens(***)ethanolic extract on inflammation in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced RAW296.7 ***:The protective effects of *** ethanolic extract on LPS-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 macrophages were assessed using biochemical analysis,including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay,quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction,and Western blot *** examine reactive oxygen species(ROS)production,flow cytometry analysis,and immunofluorescence staining were ***,the modulatory effect of *** ethanolic extract on NF-κB activation was ***:*** ethanolic extract significantly attenuated LPS-induced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and notably reduced the secretion and mRNA levels of LPS-mediated matrix *** addition,*** ethanolic extract decreased ROS production and suppressed the TLR4/NF-κB signaling ***:*** ethanolic extract alleviates inflammation as well as oxidative stress by modulating the TLR4/NF-κB signaling in LPS-induced RAW264.7 *** can be used as a potential therapeutic agent to suppress inflammation and oxidative stress-associated diseases.

Seasonal variation in the biochemical composition,condition index,and meat yield of the non-indigenous pearl oyster Pinctada imbricata radiata(Leach,1814)from the West of the Aegean Sea,Greece

The average values of the seasonal flesh biochemical composition(%)of the pearl oyster Pinctada imbricata radiata originated form 2 sampling sites,the gulfs of Evoikos(E)and Saronikos(S)in the Western Aegean Sea,showed that is rich in proteins(64.00±1.86-(E),64.67±2.95-(S))with low fat content(10.96±1.04-(E),11.86±1.13-(S))and carbohydrates(13.29±2.48-(E),9.94±4.32(S)).The condition index ranged from 26.16%±5.04 in the autumn in(E),to 44.73%±7.50 in the summer in(S).The meat yield varied from 20.49%±3.20%in the summer in(E)to 30.73%±3.47%in the summer in(S).Both results demonstrate the high nutritional profile of the pearl oyster,supporting its suitability as a potential new Mediterranean seafood source for human consumption.

Assessing feeding competition between lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis and round whitefish Prosopium cylindraceum

We collected lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis and round whitefish Prosopium cylindraceum from the main basin of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay in the Laurentian Great Lakes of North America to investigate details of diet and feeding tactics of these species in different seasons. Lake whitefish supports important commercial fisheries in Lake Huron and both species make use of habitats near the Bruce Nuclear Power Development, on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. Most fish of both species showed generalist feeding behavior, but some lake whitefish appeared to show specialist prey selection. The invasive spiny water flea Bythotrephes longimanus was an important component of the diet of both species. There was considerable dietary overlap between the whitefish species, but the ecological implications of these dietary overlaps are mitigated by the fact that dominant prey species differed in most seasons. We conclude that the potential for ecologically significant interactions between lake whitefish and round whitefish resulting from competition for similar benthic food resources in the main basin of Lake Huron is probably low [Current Zoology 56 （1）： 109-117, 2010].
