This effort aims to determine the generation source sites in the Luzon Strait for energetic, long-crest, transbasin internal waves （IW） observed in the northern South china Sea （NSCS）. The roles of islands distributed on eastern side of the strait, Kuroshio, submarine ridges, shoaling thennocline, and strait configuration played in the IW generation are examined using the cruise data analysis, satellite data interpretation, and dynamical analysis. The islands and channels on eastern side of the strait are excluded from a list of possible IW source sites owing to their unmatched horizontal dimensions to the scale of IW crest line length, and the relative low Reynolds number. The Kuroshio has a potential to be a radiator for the long-crest IW disturbances, meanwhile, the Kurosbio west （east） wing absorbs the eastward （westward） propagating IW disturbance. Namely, the Kuroshio blockades the outside west-east propagating IW disturbances. The 3-D configuration of the Luzon Strait is characterized by a sudden, more than one order widening of the cross-section areas at the outlets on both sides, providing a favorable condition for IW type initial disturbance formation. In the Luzon Strait, the thermocline is featured by a westward shoaling all the year around, providing the dynamical conditions for the amplitude growth （declination） to the westward （eastward） propagating IW type disturbance. Thus, the west slope of western submarine ridge at the western outlet of the Luzon Strait is a high possibility source sites for energetic, long-crest, transbasin IWs in the NSCS. The interpretation results of satellite SAR images during a 13 a period from 1995 to 2007 provide the convincing evidence for the conclusions.

Previously, most ocean circulation models have overlooked the role of the surface waves. As a result, these models have produced insufficient vertical mixing, with an under - prediction of the ,nixing layer （ML） depth and an over - prediction of the sea surface temperature （SST）, particularly during the summer season. As the ocean surface layer determines the lower boundary conditions of the atmosphere, this deficiency has severely limited the performance of the coupled ocean - atmospheric models and hence the climate studies. To overcome this shortcoming, a new parameterization for the wave effects in the ML model that will correct this systematic error of insufficient mixing. The new scheme has enabled the mixing layer to deepen, the surface excessive heating to be corrected, and an excellent agreement with observed global climatologic data. The study indicates that the surface waves are essential for ML formation, and that they are the primer drivers of the upper ocean dynamics; therefore, they are critical for climate studies.

This study was to investigate bacterial and archaeal community structure of pan-Arctic Ocean sediments by pyrosequencing. In total, investigation of three marine sediments revealed 15 002 bacterial and 4 362 archaeal operational taxonomic units （OTUs） at the 97% similarity level. Analysis of community structure indicated that these three samples had high bacterial and archaeal diversity. The most relatively abundant bacterial group in Samples CC 1 and R05 was Proteobacteria, while Firmicutes was dominant in Sample BL03. Thaumarchaeota was the most relatively abundant archaeal phylum in Samples CC1 and R05, and the relative abundance of Thaumarchaeota was almost as high as that of Euryarchaeota in Sample BL03. These two phyla accounted for nearly 100% of the archaeal OTUs. 6-Proteobacteria and y-Proteobacteria were the two most relatively abundant classes at Proteobacterial class level, and their relative abundance was more than 60% in Samples CC1 and R05. There were also differences in the top 10 relatively abundant bacterial and archaeal OTUs among the three samples at the 97% similarity, and only 12 core bacterial OTUs were detected. Overall, this study indicated that there were distinct microbial communities and many unique OTUs in these three samples.

A laser in-situ scattering and transmissemetry probe （LISST - 100） was used to estimate the spatial variations of suspended particle （aggregate） distribution, volume concentration and beam attenuation in the Jiaozhou Bay, Qingdao, china on 18 July 2003. One study site was located at the mouth （Sta. J1 ）, with the other being within the inner bay （Sta. J2）. Measurements of total suspended matter （TSM） and chlorophyll fluorescence and sampling of bottom sediments were carried out simultaneously. On the basis of the field data, the in-situ particle effective density, settling velocity and flux, and particle projected surface area （PSA） were estimated. The results demonstrate that both profiles have similar particle size distributions from surface to bottom within the water columns. Mean particle diameters for Stas J1 and J2 are 38 - 74 and 1 - 20 μm, respectively, particles within these ranges dominate over the particulate components. Suspended particle volume concentrations increase with water depth, with spikes near the bottom. At Sta. J1, the mean size of bottom sediments and those of suspended particles at 10.8 m below the water surface are almost the same, as well as their size distributions. This observation suggests that a special affinity exists between bottom sediment and suspended particles. In addition, the estimates show that the effective density, settling velocity and flux are higher in the innet bay. Beam attenuation coefficient correlates well with the volume concentration, positively. It is inferred that the optical scattering was mostly caused by 1 - 250 μm components, among which the particles finer than 20 μm dominate the beam attenuation. The PSA appears a proxy for the leaving reflectance estimation.

The influence of horizontal mixing on the thermal structure of the equatorial Pacific Ocean is examined based on a sigma coordinate model. In general, the distributions of the temperature and currents simulated by the sigma coordinate model are very close to the climatology. However, the simulated thermocline along the equator is slightly diffusive so that there is a cold bias above the main thermocline, while there is a warm bias under the main thermocline. Both horizontal diffusivity and viscosity have important effects on the upper thermal structure in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, while their detailed dynamics are different. Horizontal diffusivity affects the thermal structure in the upper ocean mainly through regulating the vertical diffusivity, while the horizontal viscosity does mainly through regulating directly the circulate system. A large horizontal diffusivity or a small horizontal viscosity can be in favor of simulating a more realistically thermal structure in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.

On the Spectrum Width of Wind Waves

Based on the universal expression of wind wave spectra, four commonly used definitions of the spectrum width are re-examined. The results show that the non-dimensional spectrum width can measure the width of non-dimensional spectra but it does not reflect the developing state of the spectra. The dimensional spectrum width expresses the degree of concentration of wave energy of the spectrum in the process of wind wave growth. Tests show that the spectrum width presented by Wen et al. can objectively measure the degree of concentration of wave energy of the spectrum, reflect the state of wind wave growth, and provides a better result for practical application, The rules for definition of the spectrum width are discussed.

The main processes of interaction between the coastal water, shelf water and Kuroshio water in the Huanghai Sea (HS) and East china Sea (ECS) are analyzed based on the observation and study results in recent years. These processes include the intrusion of the Kuroshio water into the shelf area of the ECS, the entrainment of the shelf water into the Kuroshio, the seasonal process in the southern shelf area of the ECS controlled alternatively by the Taiwan Strait water and the Kuroshio water intruding into the shelf area, the interaction between the Kuroshio branch water, shelf mixed water and modified coastal water in the northeastern ECS, the water-exchange between the HS and ECS and the spread of the Changjiang diluted water.

Heat content of the upper layer above the 20℃ isotherm in the tropical Pacific Ocean isestimated by using the sea temperature data set with a resolution 2°latitude×5°longitude (1980-1993) for the water depths (every 10 m) from 0 m to 400 m, and its temporal and spatial variabilities are analyzed. (1) The temporal variability indicates that the total heat in the upper layer of the equatorial Pacific Ocean is characterized by the interannual variability. The time series of the equatorial heat anomaly 5 months lead that of the El Nino index at the best positive lag correlation between the two, and the former 13 months lag behind the latter at their best negative lag correlation. Therefore the equatorial heat content can be used as a better predictor than the El Nino index for a warm or cold event. In addition, it is also found that less heat anomaly in the equator corresponds to the stronger warm events in the period (1980- 1993) and much more heat was accumulated in the 4 years including 1992/1993 ENSO (1989-1993) than the 4 years including 1982/1983 ENSO (1980-1983); (2) The spatial variability indicates that the area with the highest lag correlation among the grids moves in an anti-clockwise circle in the northern tropical Pacific Ocean within 4 years period and in a clockwise circle in the southern tropical Pacific Ocean. This result provides scientific evidence for the quasi - cycle theory of El Nino events.

Ocean temperature responses to Typhoon Mstsa in the East china Sea

The MASNUM wave-tide-circulation coupled model, with 21 layers in the vertical and （1/8） °horizontal resolution, was employed to investigate the oceanic responses to Typhoon Mstsa which traversed the East china Sea （ECS） during the period of 4 - 6 August, 2005. Numerical experiment results are analyzed and compared with observation. The responses of the sea surface temperature （SST）, in a focused area of （27° -29°N, 121° - 124°E）, include heating and cooling stages. The heating is mainly due to warm Kuroshio water transportation and downwelling due to the water accumulation. In the cooling stage, the amplitude of the simulated cold wake （ -3℃ ）, located on the right side of this typhoon track, is compared quite well with that of the satellite observed SST data. The wave-induced mixing（Bv） plays a key role for the SST cooling. Bv still plays a leading role, which accounts for 36%, for the ocean temperature drop in the upper ocean of 0 - 40 m, while the upwelling is responsible for 84% of the cooling for the lower layer of 40 - 70 m. The mixed layer depth （MLD） increased quickly from 28 to 50 m in the typhoon period. However, the simulated MLD without the wave-induced vertical mixing, evolution from 13 to 32 m, was seriously underestimated. The surface wave is too important to be ignored for the ocean responses to a typhoon.
