Depositional model of the Member Deng-2 marginal microbial mound-bank complex of the Dengying Formation in the southwestern Sichuan Basin, SW China: Implications for the Ediacaran microbial mound construction and hydrocarbon exploration

Recent advances in hydrocarbon exploration have been made in the Member Deng-2 marginal microbial mound-bank complex reservoirs of the Dengying Formation in the western Sichuan Basin, SW China,where the depositional process is regarded confusing. The microfacies, construction types, and depositional model of the Member Deng-2 marginal microbial mound-bank complex have been investigated using unmanned aerial vehicle photography, outcrop section investigation, thin section identification,and seismic reflections in the southwestern Sichuan Basin. The microbialite lithologic textures in this region include thrombolite, dendrolite, stromatolite, fenestral stromatolite, spongiostromata stone,oncolite, aggregated grainstone, and botryoidal grapestone. Based on the comprehensive analysis of“depositional fabrics-lithology-microfacies”, an association between a fore mound, mound framework,and back mound subfacies has been proposed based on water depth, current direction, energy level and lithologic assemblages. The microfacies of the mound base, mound core, mound flank, mound cap, and mound flat could be recognized among the mound framework subfacies. Two construction types of marginal microbial mound-bank complex have been determined based on deposition location, mound scale, migration direction, and sedimentary facies association. Type Jinkouhe microbial mound constructions(TJMMCs) develop along the windward margin owing to their proximity to the seaward subfacies fore mound, with a northeastwardly migrated microbial mound on top of the mud mound,exhibiting the characteristics of large-sized mounds and small-sized banks in the surrounding area. Type E'bian microbial mound constructions(TEMMCs) primarily occur on the leeward margin, resulting from the presence of onshore back mound subfacies, with the smaller southwestward migrated microbial mounds existing on a thicker microbial flat. Geochemistry of cherts from the northern Jiangxi region, South China: Implication for paleoenvironment

The extensive bedded cherts deposited during the Ediacaran-Cambrian (E-C) transition period play a crucial role in understanding the geological evolution of this period, yet the origin of these cherts remains disputed. Here, we present new geochemical data for cherts of the Piyuancun (PYC) Formation deposited during the Late Ediacaran and the Hetang (HT) Formation deposited during the Early Cambrian in northern Jiangxi region, Lower Yangtze region, South China. The PYC cherts contain a small amount of monaxons sponge spicules and radiolarian fragments, while the HT cherts lack siliceous organism evidence. Major and trace element analysis, coupled with discriminant diagrams, indicate a possible shift in redox conditions of seawater during the E-C transition in the northern Jiangxi region. The shift suggests a change from weakly-moderately restricted euxinic conditions to strongly restricted euxinic conditions. Furthermore, the location of both cherts are distant from the source area of siliceous organisms. Fossil evidence, as well as the values of Fe/Ti and Fe/(Mn+Ti), Eu anomalies, Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS) normalized REE+Y patterns, and various discriminant diagrams,support the conclusion that the PYC and HT cherts originated primarily from direct seawater precipitation, with the PYC cherts exhibiting weak hydrothermal evidence. Upwelling contributes to the formation of HT cherts and organic matter (OM) accumulation. Ocean acidification, triggered by OM degradation and biodegradation processes during the E-C transition period, leads to the extensive silica precipitation and preservation. These results enhance our understanding of the geological processes during the E-C transition.

Geochronological and geochemical constraints on the petrogenesis and geodynamic process of Hemler,Vlinder,and Il'ichev seamount lavas in NW Pacific

Oceanic intraplate volcanoes with linear age progressions are usually accepted to be derived from melting of an upwelling mantle *** seamount groups in NW Pacific,however,show complex age-distance relationships that are difficult to explain using the classic“mantle plume hypothesis”,and thus their origins are *** this study,we present ^(40)Ar-^(39)Ar age,geochemical,and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic data of lavas from Hemler,Vlinder,and Il’ichev seamounts in NW Pacific,to elucidate their petrogenesis and geodynamic *** lavas from Hemler,Vlinder,and Il’ichev seamounts are classified as alkali basalt,basanite/nephelinite,and *** with Mg O>8 wt.%exhibit high contents of CaO,FeO^(T),and TiO_(2),similar to the composition of melts formed from reaction between carbonated eclogite-derived melts and fertile *** lavas have elevated Zr/Hf ratios(40.6-45.2)and negative Zr and Hf anomalies,indicating the presence of a carbonate component in the mantle *** are enriched in incompatible trace elements and have enriched mantle 1(EM1)-like SrNd-Pb-Hf isotopic *** isotopic compositions of Vlinder,Il’ichev basanite,and Hemler lavas in this study are similar to the Rarotonga *** occurring at the same seamount,the Il’ichev alkali basalts display more depleted SrNd-Hf isotopic compositions compared to Il’ichev *** to plate tectonic reconstruction results,the ages of Hemler(100.1 Ma),Vlinder pre-(100.2 Ma)and post-shield(87.5 Ma),and Il’ichev(56.4 Ma)lavas clearly deviate from the Macdonald,Arago,Rarotonga,and Samoa hotspot tracks,indicating that they cannot directly originate from mantle *** propose that in the mid-Cretaceous,when the Pacific plate passed over Rarotonga hotspot,melting of Rarotonga plume formed the Vlinder(main-shield stage),Pako,and Ioah *** Rarotonga(and possibly Samoa)plume materials would have been dispersed into the surrounding asthenosphere by mantle conve

A new method for quantitative evaluation of shale laminae using electrical image logging

Shale oil reservoirs are generally characterized by complex mineral compositions, rapid lithofacies changes, and thin laminae. explorations have confirmed that the type and density of shale laminae significantly influence reservoir quality, highlighting the importance of accurately identifying these laminae through well logging for effective shale reservoir evaluation. Presently, relevant technologies primarily focus on the qualitative identification of shale laminae using vertical slab images from image logs. However, influenced by the complex borehole conditions and image logging quality, this approach is less effective in identifying millimeter-scale laminae. This study proposes a new method for achieving high-resolution slab images and quantitatively evaluating the laminae using electrical image logs. The new method effectively improves the processing accuracy of slab images by delicately flattening and aligning the button electrode curves derived from electrical image logs point by point. Meanwhile, it allows for the accurate quantitative evaluation of the lamina number through precise identification of peaks and troughs in microelectrode curves. As demonstrated by the applications in shale oil reservoirs in the Gulong area in Daqing and the Ganchagou area in Qinghai, the proposed method can significantly improve accuracy compared to traditional slab images. Furthermore, the lamination index calculated using this method is highly consistent with the lamina number observed in cores. This study provides a new technical method for the quantitative lamina evaluation and rock structure analysis of shale reservoirs.

A new production component method for natural gas development planning

Based on an analysis of the limitations of conventional production component methods for natural gas development planning,this study proposes a new one that uses life cycle models for the trend fitting and prediction of *** this new method,the annual production of old and new wells is predicted by year first and then is summed up to yield the production for the planning *** shows that the changes in the production of old wells in old blocks can be fitted and predicted using the vapor pressure model(VPM),with precision of 80%e95%,which is 6.6%e13.2%higher than that of other life cycle ***,a new production prediction process and method for new wells have been established based on this life cycle model to predict the production of medium-to-shallow gas reservoirs in western Sichuan Basin,with predication error of production rate in 2021 and 2022 being 6%and 3%*** new method can be used to guide the medium-and long-term planning or annual scheme preparation for gas *** is also applicable to planning for large single gas blocks that require continuous infill drilling and adjustment to improve gas recovery.

The recent discovery of large oil and gas fields in the deep-water of the Senegal Basin has drawn global *** this,several exploration wells in this area fail,which can be primarily contributed to a lack of understanding of the basin's structures and hydrocarbon accumulation *** study examines these characteristics utilizing gravity,seismic and drilling data,and finally makes a comparison with the Cote d’Ivoire Basin,a typical transform margin basin in the South *** results suggest that the Senegal Basin,influenced by multiple transform faults and a weak Paleozoic basement,experienced three evolutionary stages:rifting,transitional,and *** stage contributed to the development of distinct depositional sequences-syn-rift sequences,sag sequences,and continental margin sequences,*** Triassic-Early Jurassic rifting stage predominantly formed continental deposits,like fluvial,lacustrine,and deltaic deposits,in the syn-rift *** Middle-Late Jurassic transitional stage,influenced by transform faults,witnessed the formation of marginal ridges or submarine uplift *** zones,in conjunction with landward high terrains,formed a restricted environment promoting the development of source rocks in the sag *** the drifting stage,three types of reservoirs,namely platform carbonate rocks,deltas,and slope-floor fans were ***,large-scale hydrocarbon reservoirs have been found in the deltas and the slope-floor fans both in the Senegal Basin and the Cote d’Ivoire *** Upper Jurassic-Aptian platforms exhibit thick carbonate rocks and organic reefs on their edges,suggesting substantial potential for hydrocarbon exploration in the Senegal Basin.

Stratigraphy of the Alveolina elliptica group from the Middle Eocene of Iran:Calibration with calcareous nannofossils biozones and description of Alveolina ozcani n. sp.

Precise taxonomy and the chronostratigraphic calibration of the Middle Eocene Alveolina from Central Iran is here undertaken from the Chah-Talkh section of the southern Sabzevar region(Central Iran). We have identified Alveolina kieli, Alveolina stercusmuris and Alveolina nuttalli along with the new species Alveolina ozcani n. sp. that we include into the Alveolina elliptica group. We have also found Nummulites uroniensis, Nummulites obesus and Nummulites cf. verneuili and associated calcareous nannofossils that look reliable to make thoughtful correlations with the Shallow Benthic Zones(SBZ). The foraminiferal biostratigraphy suggests an assignment to the upper part of the lower Lutetian-lower part of the middle Lutetian,SBZ13(Middle Eocene), further strengthened through the identification of the calcareous nannofossil NP14b-NP15b or CNE8-CNE10 biozones, providing a solid correlation with the global stratigraphic standards.

Displacement characteristics of CO_(2)flooding in extra-high water-cut reservoirs

Carbon dioxide(CO_(2))flooding is a widely applied recovery method during the tertiary recovery of oil and gas.A high water saturation condition in reservoirs could induce a‘water shielding’phenomenon after the injection of CO_(2).This would prevent contact between the injected gas and the residual oil,restricting the development of the miscible zone.A micro-visual experiment of dead-end models,used to observe the effect of a film of water on the miscibility process,indicates that CO_(2)can penetrate the water film and come into contact with the residual oil,although the mixing is significantly ***,the dissolution loss of CO_(2)at high water-cut conditions is not *** oil-water partition coefficient,defined as the ratio of CO_(2)solubility in an oil-brine/two-phase system,keeps constant for specific reservoir conditions and changes little with an injection *** NMR device shows that when CO_(2)flooding follows water flooding,the residual oil decreasesdnot only in medium and large pores but also in small and micro *** levels of higher water saturation,CO_(2)displacement is characterized initially by a low oil production rate and high *** the CO_(2)breakthrough,the water-cut decreases sharply and the oil production rate increases *** response time of CO_(2)flooding at high watercut reservoirs is typically delayed and *** results were confirmed in a pilot test for CO_(2)flooding at the P1-1 well group of the Pucheng *** from this pilot study also suggest that a larger injection gas pore volume available for CO_(2)injection is required to offset the dissolution loss in high water saturation conditions.
