Roles of serum uric acid on the association between arsenic exposure and incident metabolic syndrome in an older Chinese population

Different Acupuncture Therapies for Postherpetic Neuralgia:An Overview of Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis

Background: Postherpetic neuralgia(PHN) is the most common complication of herpes zoster infection and affects patients' quality of life. Acupuncture therapy is regarded as a competitive method of treatment for analgesia. Objective: To summarize evidence from systematic reviews(SRs) and evaluate the effectiveness and safety of different acupuncture therapies for treating PHN. Methods: Eight electronic databases were searched from their inception to August 5, 2022, including 4 international electronic databases(PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science) and 4 Chinese databases(Chinese Biomedical Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Database and Wanfang Database).Methodological quality was assessed by A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2(AMSTAR 2).The Risk of Bias in Systematic Review(ROBIS) tool was used to assess the risk of bias in SRs. Evidence level was assessed by the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation(GRADE)approach. Results: Totally, 7 SRs were included, including 128 studies and 9,792 patients. In AMSTAR 2, most of the SRs were of low or critically low levels since they had more than 1 critical deficiency. In ROBIS, 1 SR(14.29%)was rated as high risk, and the other 6(85.71%) were rated as low risk. In the GRADE system, 9 outcomes(28.13%)were valued as high level, 5(15.63%) as moderate level, 1(3.13%) as low, and 17(53.13%) as very low. In the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy, the group "moxibustion vs. original medical treatment" [mean difference(MD)=–1.44, 95% confidence interval(CI): –1.80 to –1.08, I2=99%, P<0.00001] was of the highest heterogeneity and the group "bloodletting vs. original medical treatment"(MD=–2.80, 95% CI: –3.14 to –2.46, I2=0, P<0.00001)was of the lowest heterogeneity. The Agrocybe cylindracea polysaccharides (ACP) have been shown to possess various health benefits. However， the anti-inflammatory effects of ACP and the mechanisms underlying these effects remain poorly understood. In this study， we delved into the potential of ACP in mitigating colitis induced by dextrose sodium sulfate (DSS) in C57BL/6J mice and explored the associated mechanisms. ACP demonstrated notable anti-inflammatory effects in the intestines， as evidenced by the restoration of various indicators such as increased body weight and colon length， decreased DAI score， and alleviation of pathological damage in the colon. Additionally， ACP upregulated the expression of ZO-1， Occludin， and Muc2， suggesting a restoration of the mechanical and mucus barriers of the intestinal mucosa. Furthermore， ACP facilitated the polarization of M2 macrophages and preserved intestinal immune balance. The impact of ACP on the biological barrier was further scrutinized. ACP ameliorated disruptions in the gut microbiota， particularly by enhancing the relative abundance of bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids (Anaerostipes， Romboutsia， and Butyricicoccus). Remarkably， the ameliorative effects of ACP on colitis were compromised upon the removal of the microbial community， but were restored post fecal microbiota transplantation， indicating that the efficacy of ACP in alleviating colitis is dependent on the gut microbiota. Intriguingly， the regulatory influence of ACP on macrophages also hinged on the gut microbiota. In essence， ACP exhibits the potential to modulate the composition of the gut microbiota， fostering the growth of beneficial bacteria， which in turn promotes the polarization of colonic M2 macrophages and facilitates the repair of the intestinal mucosal barrier in DSS-induced colitis. These findings underscore the capacity of ACP to enhance the intestinal mucosal barrier and ameliorate colitis by modulating the gut microbiota-macrophage axis， suggesting that ACP cou

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of Persian shallot extract on the serum markers and blood pressure of patients with metabolic syndrome(MetS). METHODS: Fifty patients with Met S diagnosis were randomly assigned to the intervention(Persian shallot extract) and the control(placebo) group. Both groups received treatment for three months. Before the study and at the end of the study, 5 mL peripheral blood was taken from each patient. The measured factors included total antioxidant capacity(TAC), superoxide dismutase enzyme(SOD), malondialdehyde, oxidized low-density lipoprotein(Ox-LDL), apolipoprotein H(Apo-H), fasting blood glucose(FBS), total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein(HDL), LDL, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. RESULTS: At baseline, the evaluated parameters were not significantly different between the intervention and control groups. At the end of the study, the mean serum levels of malondialdehyde and ox-LDL were significantly lower in the intervention group. The mean FBS, cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL were significantly lower in the intervention group. The mean TAC and HDL were significantly higher in the intervention group(P < 0.05). Moreover, the intervention group significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure. No other significant association was observed. CONCLUSION: Persian shallot extract has several beneficial effects in Met S patients, including optimizing oxidative balance, reducing blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, and blood lipid profile.

Dear Editor,Liver transplantation(LT)is the only curative therapy for patients with endstage liver disease(He et al.,2023;Ling et al.,2022).Post-transplant hypertriglyceridemia(PTHT),which has an incidence of up to 32.8%in 6 months after LT,is one of the major post-transplant complications(Toshima et al.,2020).With the prolongation of the recipient’s survival time,the incidence of PTHT is increasing,becoming an important factor that affects the recipient’s quality of life and survival *** with various metabolic complications,including PTHT,have a 1.78 times higher risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease(ASCVD)development and death than recipients without these complications(Jiménez Pérez et al.,2016).Studies have shown that PTHT,accompanied by other posttransplant metabolic complications and immunosuppressants,are important risk factors for post-transplant ASCVD and mediate 19%–42% of nongraft-related deaths(Davis and Shadab Siddiqui,2017;Jiménez-Pérez et al.,2016).However,early prediction of PTHT remains a major challenge.
