A numerical case study on identifying the optimum number of buckets for a Pelton turbine is presented. Three parameters： number of buckets, bucket radial position and bucket angular position are grouped since they are found to be interrelated. By identifying the best combination of the radial and angular position for each number of buckets it is shown that reduction in the number of buckets beyond the limit suggested by the available literature can improve the efficiency and be beneficial with regard to the manufacturing complexity and cost perspective. The effect of this reduction in the number of buckets was confirmed experimentally.

Dear Editor,Health management is essential to ensure battery performance and safety, while data-driven learning system is a promising solution to enable efficient state of health(SoH) estimation of lithium-ion(Liion) batteries. However, the time-consuming signal data acquisition and the lack of interpretability of model still hinder its efficient deployment. Motivated by this, this letter proposes a novel and interpretable data-driven learning strategy through combining the benefits of explainable AI and non-destructive ultrasonic detection for battery SoH estimation. Specifically, after equipping battery with advanced ultrasonic sensor to promise fast real-time ultrasonic signal measurement, an interpretable data-driven learning strategy named generalized additive neural decision ensemble(GANDE) is designed to rapidly estimate battery SoH and explain the effects of the involved ultrasonic features of interest.

The study and application of methods for incorporating nonuniform and delayed information in state estimation tech- niques are important topics to advance in soft sensor development. Therefore, this paper presents a review of these methods and pro- poses a taxonomy that allows a faster selection of state estimator in this type of applications. The classification is performed according to the type of estimator, method, and used tool. Finally, using the proposed taxonomy, some applications reported in the literature are de- scribed.

We present a novel approach to automatically recover, from a small set of partially overlapping spherical images, an indoor structure representation in terms of a 3D floor plan registered with a set of 3D environment maps. We introduce several improvements over previous approaches based on color and spatial reasoning exploiting Manhattan world priors. In particular, we introduce a new method for geometric context extraction based on a 3D facet representation,which combines color distribution analysis of individual images with sparse multi-view clues. We also introduce an efficient method to combine the facets from different viewpoints in a single consistent model, taking into the reliability of the facet information. The resulting capture and reconstruction pipeline automatically generates 3D multi-room environments in cases where most previous approaches fail, e.g., in the presence of hidden corners and large clutter, without the need for additional dense 3D data or tools. We demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of our approach on different real-world indoor scenes. Our test data is available to allow further studies and comparisons.

The fourth industrial revolution promises to create what has been called the smart factory. The vision is that within such modular structured smart factories, cyber-physical systems monitor physical processes, create a virtual copy of the physical world and make decentralised decisions. This paper provides a view of this initiative from an automation systems perspective. In this context it considers how future automation systems might be effectively configured and supported through their lifecycles and how integration, application modelling, visualisation and reuse of such systems might be best achieved. The paper briefly describes limitations in current engineering methods, and new emerging approaches including the cyber physical systems （CPS） engineering tools being developed by the automation systems group （ASG） at Warwick Manufacturing group, University of Warwick, UK.

The effects of high drawing speeds on parameters of holey fibers are presented. A holey fiber preform structure was made by using tube-in-tube method and was drawn at high speeds with an aim of mass production to meet the demand of next generation communication systems. Transmission parameters such as numerical aperture and normalized frequency of the fabricated holey fibers have been measured and compared with theoretical values based on effective index method. Although the fabricated holey fibers were not of high quality, the analyses of the parameters have shown promising outlook for fabrication of such fibers.

Educational innovation is a field that has been greatly enriched by using technology in its processes, resulting in a learning model where information comes from numerous sources and collaboration takes place among multiple students. One attractive challenge within educational innovation is the design of collaborative learning activities from the social computing point of view, where collaboration is not limited to student-to-student relationships, but includes student-to-machine interactions. At the same time, there is a great lack of tools that give support to the whole learning process and are not restricted to specific aspects of the educational task. In this paper, we present and evaluate context-aware framework for collaborative learning applications(CAFCLA) as a solution to these problems. CAFCLA is a flexible framework that covers the entire process of developing collaborative learning activities, taking advantage of contextual information and social interactions. Its application in the experimental case study of a collaborative WebQuest within a museum has shown that, among other benefits, the use of social computing improves the learning process, fosters collaboration, enhances relationships, and increases engagement.

This study investigates the surface of unpolished samples of blast furnace （BF） coke drilled from the tuyere zone, which hosts Fe-Si particles （mostly Fe3Si） that vary in size, shape, depth of submersion （penetration） into the coke matrix, and contact features with the surface. Based on the shape of the particles and the extent of their contact with the coke matrix, they have been grouped into three major types：（I） sphere-like droplets with limited contact area, （II） semi-spheres with a larger contact area, and （III） irregular segregations with a spherical surface, which exhibit the largest contact area among the three types of particles. Considering the ratio between the height （h） of the particles and half of their length at the surface level （/） along the cross-section, these three types can be characterized as follows：（I） h 〉/, （II） h ~/, and （1II） h 〈/. All the three types of particles can be found near each other. The shape and the extent of the contact depend on the de- gree of penetration of the material into the matrix, which is a function of the composition of the particles. Type （I） particles were initially saturated with Si at an earlier stage and, for that reason, they can react less with carbon in the coke matrix than type （II） and （III）, thereby moving faster through the coke cone. Thermodynamic calculations have shown that the temperature interval of 1250-1300~C can be consid- ered the starting point for Si entering into molten iron under quartz-dominated coke ash. Accordingly, the initial pick-up of Si by molten iron can be assumed to be mineral-related. In terms of BF practice, better conditions for sliding Fe-Si droplets through the coke cone are available when they come into contact with free SiO2 concentrated into small grains, and when the SiO2/∑MexOy mass ratio in the coke ash is high.

The cross compatibility within and between Yulania Spach and Michelia L.(Magnoliaceae) is relatively good and various such hybrids,obtained by conventional artificial hybridization,are *** aim of the present study was to determine the extent of genome differentiation between the species involved in these crosses through the observation of chromosome pairing during meiosis in pollen mother cells(PMCs) of the *** pairing behavior was studied in five species(2n = 38) and two interspecific hybrids of Michelia,eight species(2n = 38,76 and 114) and 10 interspecific hybrids of Yulania,and three intergeneric hybrids between Michelia and *** results showed that chromosome pairing was normal with bivalent formation in diploid parental species and in interspecific *** addition to bivalents,multivalents were encountered in polyploid parental species and polyploid interspecific *** the intergeneric hybrids between a tetraploid Yulania and two diploid Michelia,19 chromosomes,most likely originating from Michelia,were unable to synapse from zygotene to metaphase *** chromosome pairing indicated a high degree of homology between species within Michelia and Yulania and less homology between the genomes of these two *** differentiation of morphological characters and the distinctness of natural distribution also support the conclusion that these two genera are likely independent monophyletic *** suggests that the two genera were split at early evolution of Magnoliaceae and the overlapping characteristics in external morphology and internal structures of the two genera may be the result of parallel evolution or ancient common ancestry.
