INTEGRATION OF A LONGITUDINAL CURRICULUM IN MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE WITH RESIDENCY TRAINING IN family MEDICINE

Objective: To demonstrate that a residency-based model for training physicians in acupuncture is feasible and results in competence, as measured by the certification process of the American Board of Medical ***: The Maine-Dartmouth family Medicine Residency, which is affiliated with the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, has for the past five years required all residents to participate in a 300-hour integrative medicine curriculum, as part of a pilot project developed at the University of Arizona Integrative Medicine *** the beginning, an introduction to medical acupuncture has been offered as an approved elective in the integrative medicine *** 2010, a three-year, elective, longitudinal curriculum in medical acupuncture was developed and approved by the Curriculum Committee of the residency *** curriculum was also presented to the American Board of Medical Acupuncture and was accepted as an alternative route for satisfying board *** of the MaineDartmouth longitudinal curriculum include:(a) principles oftraditional Chinese medicine;(b) development of skills in point location, needling, cupping and moxibustion;(c) modern paradigms, including electroacupuncture, French energetics, neuroanatomical approaches, balance methods and microsystems;(d) classical diagnostic methods;(e) reiterative instruction in differentiation of syndromes and treatment planning;(f) Chinese dietary therapy, Tuina, Qigong and other treatment modalities;(g) clinical ***: In 2013, the first resident to complete the program passed the certification examination of the American Board of Medical ***: Benefits of acupuncture training during residency include:(a) a reiterative process as opposed to linear learning;(b) enhanced opportunities for supervised clinical practice as part of acupuncture training;(c) preparation for seamless integration of acupuncture into a primary care practice.

Motivations and Barriers towards Volunteer Work among family Medicine Residents and Primary Health Care Physicians in Qassim Region, Saudi Arabia

Introduction: Volunteering is an unpaid voluntary activity that provides some services to one or more other people or the community at large. Volunteer in the medical field is common. Physicians and medical students are participating in voluntary activities. This study assessed the motivations and barriers of family Medicine (FM) Residents and Primary Health Care (PHC) Physicians in Qassim Region, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out between 12th March 2021 to 31st September 2021 in Qassim Region, Saudi Arabia. 63 FM residents and 89 PHC physicians were involved. A self-administered questionnaire using Volunteer Functions Inventory (VFI) questions was distributed. A 30-item questionnaire is divided into 6 scales of 5 items each, which are scored using a 5-point Likert-type scale (where 1 strongly disagrees and 5 strongly agree). Results: Of 152 FM residents and PHC physicians, 91 (59.9%) were males, and Saudi 90 (59.2%). The mean age was 35 (±SD8.6) years. The majority of respondents 126 (85.7%) participated in different kinds of volunteer work. The highest rank of the benefits selected 137 (90.1%) was gained Allah’s pleasure. About 66 (43.4%) of respondents reported different reasons as barriers;lack of time was the dominant reason for 59 (38.8%). A strong statistical association was found between gender and facing barriers (P-value Conclusions: This study highlighted that the values motivation factor was the highest among the six motivation determinants. The main reason preventing respondents from doing voluntary work was the lack of time. Male gender and Saudi nationality physicians participated more in previous voluntary work P-value < 0.001. Further future research into studying human behaviour towards voluntary work is highly needed.

Establishing cell polarity by the Lgl family proteins

The lethal giant larvae(lgl)gene was first identified more than 30 years ago in Drosophila and characterized as a tumor suppressor *** in budding yeast,flies and mammals all indicate that the evolutionarily conserved Lgl family proteins play an important role in cell ***7/77,the yeast Lgl homologues,are important for the establishment and reinforcement of cell polarity through their localized interaction and kinetic activation of the post-Golgi secretion *** for higher eukaryotes,both in epithelial polarity and asymmetric cell division,the role of Lgl protein is deployed by localizing proteins to the membrane in a polarized *** addition,Lgl is transiently required during the establishment phase of polarity,implicating that Lgl functions at strategic time points for proliferation *** in cancer biology provide direct connections between malfunction of Lgl and formation,progression and metastasis of various ***,we review recent advances in the field,focusing on the function of the Lgl family in cellular polarization.

Characterization of three Arabidopsis AP2/EREBP family transcription factors involved in ABA sensitivity, freeze and salt tolerance

AP2/EREBP transcription factors (TFs) play very important roles in plant development, hormonal regulation and stress response. Upon genome-wide cDNA cloning, phylogenetic and expression pattern analyses of this plant specific TF family, we found that three of the members including At1g71450, At1g50680 and At5g13910, were likely involved in responses to ABA, cold and salt. Complementary DNAs containing putative full-length ORFs of these three TFs were obtained and fused individually to the GAL4 DNA-binding domains. All the 3 genes functioned effectively as trans-activators using yeast one-hybrid assays. RT-PCR experiments showed that the At1g71450 gene was induced by ABA and low temperature; the At1g50680 gene was responsive to quite a few stress conditions, but especially to freezing temperature; and the At5g13910 gene was induced by high salt treatment, drought and ethyl-ene. By searching the ABRC T-DNA insertion mutant stocks, we obtained knockout lines for these TFs. Homozygous ko1 (At1g71450) plants showed a hypersensitive response to ABA during seed germina-tion and also in stomata movement. Homozygous ko2 (At1g50680) plants showed a significant reduc-tion in plant freezing tolerance compared to the wild type after chilling treatment. Homozygous ko3 (At5g13910) were less tolerant to high salinity than wild type plants. Our data suggest that At1g71450 is a negative regulator in ABA signaling, while At1g50680 and At5g13910 are positive regulators in cold and salt stress responses, respectively.

New Fossil Beetles of the family Ommatidae (Coleoptera: Archostemata) from the Jehol Biota of China

A new genus with one new species and five new species of genus Amblomma of fossil ommatids are described and illustrated： Euryomma tylodes gen. et sp. nov., Amblomma cyclodonta sp. nov., Amblomma miniscula sp. nov., Amblomma porrecta sp. nov., Amblomma eumeura sp. nov., and Amblomma protensa sp. nov. All of them were collected from the Upper Jurassic or Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of western Liaoning, China. A key to the species of Amblomma is given. The wide epipleural space shows that Euryomma may be a primitive genus in Ommatidae. Many different species of Amblomma occurred within the same sedimentary horizon in this area could be environmental changes caused by frequent volcanic activities during the deposition of the Yixian Formation.

Comparative Studies on Sperm Ultrastructure of Three Gecko Species, Gekko japonicus, Gekko chinensis and Hemidactylus bowrigii(Reptilia, Squamata, Gekkonidae)

We provide the first description of the ultrastructure of the spermatozoa of Gekko japonicus, Gekko chinensis and Hemidactylus bowrigii for further understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of Gekkonidae. Mature spermatozoa of the three species differ in the occurrence and shape of epinuclear electron-lucent zone, nuclear space, neck cylinder and mitochondria. G. japonicus and G. chinensis have similar spermatozoan ultrastructure while H. bowrigii differs from these two species. In addition, these three species have neck cylinder with mitochondria in neck region and dense bodies arranged in grid with mitochondria in the midpiece, which may be the autapomorphies of the family Gekkonidae. Statistical analyses reveal that： total length of the spermatozoa was significantly different between G. japonicus and G. chinensis, as well as between G. japonicus and H. bowrigii（F2,57 = 23.66, P 〈 0.0001）; G. japonicus and H. bowrigii differ in head length（F2,43 = 4.64, P 〈 0.05） and the width of nuclear base（F2,22 = 3.97, P 〈0.05）. In addition, the midpiece length（F2,33 = 23.66, P 〈 0.01） of the spermatozoa was significantly different between H. bowrigii and G. japonicus, and also between H. bowrigii and G. chinensis. Lengths of perforatorium, acrosomal complex and nuclear rostrum and the width of nuclear shoulder are similar in all three species. Our results indicated that the sperm ultrastructure contained intra and intergeneric variabilities which is helpful for better understanding their genetic relationships.

Changing Gly311 to an acidic amino acid in the MATE family protein DTX6 enhances Arabidopsis resistance to the dihydropyridine herbicides

In modern agriculture,frequent application of herbicides may induce the evolution of resistance in plants,but the mechanisms underlying herbicide resistance remain largely ***,we report the char-acterization of rtp 1(resistant to paraquat 1),an Arabidopsis mutant showing strong resistance to the widely used herbicides paraquat and *** rtp1 mutant is semi-dominant and carries a point mutation in the gene encoding the multidrug and toxic compound extrusion family protein DTX6,leading to the change of glycine to glutamic acid at residue 311(G311E).The wild-type DTX6 with glycine 311 conferred weak para-quat and diquat resistance when overexpressed,while mutation of glycine 311 to a negatively charged amino acid(G311E or G311D)markedly increased the paraquat and diquat resistance of plants,whereas mutation to a positively charged amino acid(G311R or G311K)compromised the resistance,suggesting that the charge property of residue 311 of DTX6 is critical for the paraquat and diquat resistance of Arabi-dopsis ***6 is localized in the endomembrane trafficking system and may undergo the endosomal sorting to localize to the vacuole and plasma *** with the V-ATPase inhibitor ConA reduced the paraquat resistance of the rtp1 *** release and uptake assays demonstrated that DTX6 is involved in both exocytosis and vacuolar sequestration of ***6 and DTX5 show functional redundancy as the dtx5 dtx6 double mutant but not the dtx6 single mutant plants were more sen-sitive to paraquat and diquat than the wild-type ***,our work reveals a potential mecha-nism for the evolution of herbicide resistance in weeds and provides a promising gene for the manipulation of plant herbicide resistance.

Molecular cloning, sequence analysis, and cadmium stress-rated expression changes of BTG1 in freshwater pearl mussel(Hyriopsis schlegelii)

The B cells translocation gene 1 （BTG1） is a member of the BTG/TOB family of anti-proliferative genes, which have recently emerged as important regulators of cell growth and differentiation among vertebrates. Here, for the first time we cloned the full-length eDNA sequence of Hyriopsis schlegelii （Hs-BTG1）, an economically important freshwater shellfish and potential indicator of environmental heavy metal pollution, for the first time. Using rapid amplification of eDNA ends （RACE） together with splicing the EST sequence from a haemocyte eDNA library, we found that Hs-BTG1 contains a 525 bp open reading frame （ORF） encoding a 174 amino-acid polypeptide, a 306 bp 5＇ untranslated region （5＇ UTR）, and a 571 bp 3＇ UTR with a Poly（A） tail as well as a transcription termination signal （AATAAA）. Homologne searching against GenBank revealed that Hs-BTG1 was closest to Crassostrea gigas BTG1, sharing 50.57% of protein identities. Hs-BTG1 also shares some typical features of the BTG/TOB family, possessing two well-conserved A and B boxes. Clustering analysis of Hs-BTG1 and other known BTGs showed that Hs-BTG1 was also closely related to BTG1 of C. gigas from the invertebrate BTG1 clade. Function prediction via homology modeling showed that both Hs-BTG1 and C. gigas BTG1 share a similar three-dimensional structure with Homo sapiens BTG1. Tissue-specific expression analysis of the Hs-BTG1 via real-time PCR showed that the transcripts were constitutively expressed, with the highest levels in the hepatopancreas and gills, and the lowest in both haemocyte and muscle tissue. Expression levels of Hs-BTG1 in hepatopancreas （2.03-fold）, mantle （2.07-fold）, kidney （2.2-fold） and haemocyte （2.5-fold） were enhanced by cadmium （Cd2＋） stress, suggesting that Hs-BTG 1 may have played a significant role in H, schlegelii adaptation to adverse environmental conditions.
