Occurrence and Antibiotic Susceptibility Profile of Streptococcus spp. Isolated from Ewe＇s Milk

The purpose of this study was to determine the occurrence and antimicrobial resistance of Streptococcus spp. isolated from fresh ewe＇s milk and consequently to draw conclusions concerning the health condition of the animal flocks and the current trends of antibiotic use in small ruminants. A total of 77 mountainous sheepfolds were investigated representing 10% of all transhumant sheep and goats flocks in the area. Duplicate milk samples were collected from January to February transferred to the laboratory and analyzed for the presence of Streptococcus spp. by using the serial dilution method and plating on the surface of Slanetz and Bartley agar. The isolates were tested against nine antimicrobial agents with the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. The results showed that Streptococcus spp. occurred in 84.4% of the samples and in counts ranged between 1.8 log CFU/mL and 4.6 log CFU/mL. Concerning susceptibility, only 1.3% of the isolates were resistant to all antimicrobials while 27.3% were fully susceptible. Resistance to cefepime was the most common （93.1%） observation followed by resistance to ampicillin （82.1%）, ciprofloxacine （58.3%） and meropenem （51.9%）. The isolates were vancomycin susceptible at a rate of 83.6%. Multidrug resistance to at least three antibiotics was observed to be 22.1% of Streptococcus spp.. Given the prevalence of Streptococcus spp. and the elevated resistance of isolates to various antibiotics it is concluded that further examinations and even interventions are required in order to pertain the appropriate animal health and milk quality.

Modeling of Different Irrigation Methods for Maize Using AquaCrop Model: Case Study

Modeling of irrigation methods is one of the most important techniques that contribute to the future of modern agriculture. This will conserve water as water scarcity is a major threat for agriculture. In this study, AquaCrop model was used to model different irrigation methods of maize in field trails in Al-Yousifya, 15 km Southwest of Baghdad. Field experiments were conducted for two seasons during 2016 and 2017 using five irrigation methods including furrow, surface drip and subsurface drip with three patterns of emitter depth (10, 20 and 30 cm) irrigation. AquaCrop simulations of biomass, grain yield, harvest index and water productivity were validated using different statistical parameters under the natural conditions obtained in the study area. For 2016 and 2017 seasons, results of R2 were 0.98 and 0.99, 0.99 and 0.99, 0.99 and 0.97, and 0.8 and 0.73 for biomass, grain yield, harvest index and water productivity, respectively. The study has conducted that simulation using AquaCrop is considered very efficient tool for modeling of different irrigation applications for maize production under the existing conditions in the central region of Iraq.

Conception Rate Using the Select-Synch Protocol in Combination with a Lower Dose Progesterone-Releasing Intravaginal Insert (1.38 g) in Swiss Dairy Cows

Background: Synchronization programs have become standard in the dairy industry. In Switzerland, these programs are used but newly. The objective of this study was A) to estimate the pregnancy rate after a Select-Synch protocol including a low dosage of progesterone in CIDR (1.38 g). As a second step B) this pregnancy rate should be compared to cows from another Swiss study that used a Select-Synch protocol with the 1.9 g insert ADDIN *** ADDIN *** (Rudolph et al., 2011). Methods: A) 196 cows were included in the study. Cows received a CIDR 1.38 g and 2.5 ml of buserelin i.m. on d 0. On d 7, the CIDR insert was removed and 5 ml of dinoprost was administered i.m. On d 0 a milk sample for progesterone analysis was taken. Pregnancy was determined at or more than 35 days after artificial insemination. B) The 1.38 g group and the 1.9 g group were compared as to cow and farm factors, number of preceding AI’s, gynecological and uterine pretreatment and treatment itself. A forward selection procedure was used (test result considered significant if p-value 0.05). Results: A) The pregnancy rate, using the Select-Synch protocol with the CIDR 1.38 g was 44.4%. B) The CIDR 1.9 g Select-Synch group revealed a pregnancy rate of 50.4% ADDIN *** ADDIN *** (Rudolph et al., 2011). Significant differences between the groups were not found. Conclusion: The 1.38 g CIDR-Select-Synch protocol may be recommended for multiparous dairy cows. The pregnancy rate compared to the 1.9 g CIDR-Select-Synch protocol was 8% lower, but this difference was not significant.

Utilization of magnetically treated water has been investigated and applied in many countries such as Russia,Australia,Israel,China and *** have shown that the magnetic field is used as a safe alternative to improve plant growth and *** the properties of magnetically treated water have received a great deal of interest in recent years,there are no studies conducted in Moroccan agricultural *** present study aimed at gaining more insight on the effect of magnetically treated irrigation water(MTIW)in the northwest region of Morocco,on the yield of strawberry plants(Fragaria×ananassa ***)and its *** experiments were conducted in situ,during two crop seasons(2011-2012 and 2013-2014).The results confirm that physical treatment of irrigation water by a static magnetic field improves the yield and quality of strawberry *** percentages of increase in number of flowers,number of fruits,fruit yield and quality of export production per 100 plants were 27.4%,30.9%,34.8%,24.3%,respectively,compared with normal irrigation water(average over both crop seasons).These results suggest that irrigation with MTIW improves the production as well as the quality of the strawberry fruit,thus water use efficiency was ***,the MTIW can be considered as a promising technique for improvement but extensive research is still required.

The Effect of Aromatherapy on Equine Facial Expression, Heart Rate, Respiratory Tidal Volume and Spontaneous Muscle Contractures in M. Temporalis and M. Cleidomastoideus

The ability to calm horses affects both the safety and well-being of human-horse relationships. However, not many natural calmatives are known, nor the efficacy of these in supporting a state of calmness in horses. This study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to test whether aromatherapy has a measurable and calming effect on equine facial expression and a range of physiological parameters. Nine horses of different ages, genders and breeds were included in a crossover design with humidified essential oils to determine the calming effect of vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides), spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) and roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) in relation to water (negative control) and lavender oil (positive control) in horses standing still. The results revealed significantly lowered heart rate (P < 0.05 - <0.001) and respiratory tidal volume (P < 0.05 - <0.001) for the tested essential oils, while spikenard oil was best at inducing a relaxed facial expression (60% of the full-time scale for 8 horses;75% of the full-time scale for 7 horses) and roman chamomile oil was statistically most successful at reducing the incidence of spontaneous muscle contractures in M. Temporalis (P < 0.001) and M. Cleidomastoideus (P < 0.05) compared to the other aromatherapy treatments. It is concluded that aromatherapy has both qualitative and quantitative effects on physiological parameters in static horses, and moreover, that essential oils appear to have a calming effect.

The Effects of the Quantum and Finesse Bridles on Equine M. Brachiocephalicus and M. Splenius Function at Three Different Speeds

Badly designed and fitted tack induces physiological stress responses in horses, and may compromise animal welfare. Moreover, horses, just like humans, comprise a series of interconnected myofascial lines. However, to date there are no measurements of the effects of horse tack, such as bridles on muscle parameters. This study used acoustic myography to test whether two commercial anatomically designed and fitted bridles, have a measurable and positive effect on both equine muscle-function and performance. A Quantum bridle was tested on 12 Icelandic horses, whilst a Finesse bridle was tested on 8 Icelandic horses, and results compared with data from a standard bridle (n = 12) tested at the same time and under identical conditions. Sensors were placed on M. Brachiocephalicus and M. Splenius, and the horses exercised following a set protocol at three speeds. The results revealed statistically significant improvements in muscle performance as assessed by both the regularity of the recording at each speed, and the number of transient powerful contractions (spikes) for the anatomically designed and fitted bridles, compared with the standard bridle. It is concluded that the effect of anatomically designed bridles can not only be measured in the neck muscles of exercising horses, but that they appear to have a positive effect on muscle performance.

Invasive-squamous-cell-cancer (ISCC) of the anal canal is an uncommon disease. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the etiological agent of most of types of ISCC. The incidence of ISCC has been increasing in HIV-infected individuals, even after the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy. The aim of this study was to analyze biopsy specimens from patients diagnosed with ISCC at a tertiary hospital from 1983 to 2012 in order to detect HPV-DNA. Methods: Formaldehyde-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens from patients with ISCC underwent HPV-DNA genotyping using multiplex PCR assay. Results: A total of 31 cases were collected;10 were HIV-infected (9 men, 1 woman) and 21 non-HIV-infected (11 men, 10 women). HPV infection was detected in 87.5% (7/8) of the HIV-infected patients (DNA from 2 biopsies was degraded) and 76.2% (16/21) of non-HIV-infected individuals. Multiple-type infections were only found in 28.6% (2/7) of the HIV-infected patients (no multiple-type infections in non-HIV-infected individuals). The most prevalent type was HPV-16: 50% (4/8) in the HIV-infected group (57% [4/7] of the HPV-positive samples) and 66.7% (14/21) in the non-HIV-infected group (87.5% (14/16) of the HPV-positive samples). Remarkably, 37.5% (3/8) of the HIV-infected group had high-risk HPV types not included in the vaccines (HPV-33, 51, 52, and 66) compared with 4.8% in the non-HIV-infected group (1/21, HPV-52). All cases of anal ISCC in HIV-infected patients were recorded in the highly active antiretroviral therapy era. Conclusion: HIV-infected patients presented anal ISCC with a higher proportion of high-risk HPV types not covered by the conventional vaccines than non-HIV-infected individuals.

A field trial was conducted at a private farm in AL-Hashimiya district Babylon Governorate—the republic of Iraq during the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 growing seasons. This study was conducted using two irrigation methods, sprinkler and surface irrigation, for each of them had three Tillage methods (zero-tillage, medium-tillage, deep-tillage) and each tillage system had four seeding rate of wheat yield (120, 180, 240, 300) kg∙ha-1. Results indicated that the consumptive water use was 557.5 and 535.9 mm for surface irrigation and 460.9 and 442.6 mm for sprinkler irrigation in the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 growing seasons. 选用伊维菌素浇泼剂、注射剂、片剂、干混悬剂4种剂型,分别按0.5,0.2,0.3,0.3mg/kg体重剂量,对1.5岁牦牛在10月中旬给药,进行不同给药方法用于防治牦牛皮蝇蛆病的给药速度、劳动强度、使用的安全性、防治效果等方面的比较研究。结果:给药速度以浇泼剂最佳,其次为注射剂,再次为干混悬剂,片剂最慢;劳动强度以浇泼剂最佳,其次为注射剂与干混悬剂,再次为片剂;伊维菌素注射剂、浇泼剂和干混悬剂的防治效果佳,其驱净率和驱虫率均达100.00%,片剂较低,平均驱净率和驱虫率分别为95.41%和96.36%;同期检查阳性对照组牦牛皮蝇蛆平均感染率33.33%、平均感染强度7.5个虫体。试验表明,伊维菌素4种剂型防治牦牛皮蝇蛆病高效安全,其中浇泼剂优势明显。

Pasteurella species is considered the principal pathogen of the respiratory *** haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida were investigated and typed from nasal swabs and tissues taken from sheep,goat and ***,41 lung and 121 nasal swabs samples were collected from animals with respiratory diseases during 2015 to 2017 in six different regions in *** first,a screening of Pasteurella species using the real time PCR(RT-PCR)was carried out,then all isolated strains on agar blood were confirmed by PCR gel based assay specific for *** and *** was evaluated in mice and histopathological examination was done on some of lung *** results revealed that 34 samples of which 28(55%)from nasal swabs and six(38%)from lungs were positive for *** and nine samples of which seven(14%)from nasal swabs and two(13%)from lungs were positive on *** serogroup ***-two percent(72%)isolates were highly pathogenic to mice,which is in accordance with the results obtained by histopathology *** is the first report for widespread infections of Pasteurella(***&***)in ruminants in ***,measures including development of vaccines are highly required to mitigate the impact of the bacteria in animals.
