Thinking Fast and Slow in Computer Problem Solving

Research in spreadsheet management proved that the overuse of slow thinking, rather than fast thinking, is the primary source of erroneous end-user computing. However, we found that the reality is not that simple. To view end-user computing in its full complexity, we launched a project to investigate end-user education, training, support, activities, and computer problem solving. In this project we also set up the base and mathability-extended typology of computer problem solving approaches, where quantitative values are assigned to the different problem solving methods and activities. In this paper we present the results of our analyses of teaching materials collected in different languages from all over the world and our findings considering the different problem solving approaches, set in the frame of different thinking modes, the characteristics of expert teachers, and the meaning system model of teaching approaches. Based on our research, we argue that the proportions of fast and slow thinking and most importantly their manifestation are responsible for erroneous end-user activities. Applying the five-point mathability scale of computer problem solving, we recognized slow thinking activities on both tails and one fast thinking approach between them. The low mathability slow thinking activities, where surface navigation and language details are focused on, are widely accepted in end-user computing. The high mathability slow thinking problem solving activities, where the utilization of concept based approaches and schema construction take place, is hardly detectable in end-user activities. Instead of building up knowledge which requires slow thinking and then using the tools with fast thinking, end-users use up their slow thinking in aimless wandering in huge programs, making wrong decisions based on their untrained, clueless intuition, and distributing erroneous end-user documents. Capsule endoscopy(CE) was launched at the beginning of this millennium and has since become a well established methodology for evaluating the entire small bowel for manifold *** far exceeded early expectations by providing a tool for establishing the correct diagnosis for elusive gastrointestinal(GI) conditions such as obscure GI bleeding,Crohn's disease,polyposis syndrome and *** CE,like radiology,gives results that can only be read,unlike conventional endoscopic procedures which enable concomitant biopsy when *** is one of the major limitations of the *** ideal CE should improve the quality of the image and have a faster frame rate than the currently available *** should be a therapeutic capsule capable of performing a biopsy,aspirating fluid,delivering drugs as well as measuring the motility of the small bowel *** major leap forward would be the capability of remote control of the capsule's movement in order to navigate it to reach designated anatomical areas for carrying out a variety of therapeutic *** for improving the capability of the future generation capsule is almost within grasp and it would not be surprising to witness the realization of these giant steps within the coming decade.

With the development of aircraft equipment, conventional navigation is the shift from performance based navigation (PBN). As is known, conventional navigation is based on ground-based navigation aids;however, PBN is based on aircraft avionics and performance. In this paper, a new method called Point Merge System (PMS) considered as one of PBN procedures will be introduced. PMS has many benefits related to fuel savings and emission reductions by implementing Continuous Descent Approaches (CDAs). A new PMS standard arrival route (STAR) model will be designed in radar simulation and it will be suggested.

Safety Indications of navigation Audit for Tankers to Develop a Bridge Inspection Method

A significant amount of world trade has been carried out by maritime transportation. In 2016, world maritime trade volume increased by 2% and reached 10.3 billion tons, 55,057 global ton-miles. There has been a significant increase in quantity and tonnage of tankers, with the requirement for well qualified and experienced personnel in the maritime industry. Therefore, employment has become a serious problem. Major Oil Companies (MOCs), port states, classification societies, and flag states have increased the number of inspections on tankers due to safety concerns. Tanker inspections are becoming more difficult and inefficient due to intensive cargo operations. Inefficient, subjective or substandard inspections/evaluations are usually leading to incorrect decisions, and causing an unfair market. In addition, corrective actions cannot be carried out properly, and decision making authorities cannot give the best decisions about vessels and their operator companies due to lack of scientific methods. In this study, details are identified such as finding the root causes, identifying the risks, understanding the possible consequences, and determining the working areas during the ship crews’, operators’, auditors’ and charterers’ working and ship selection periods. Pairwise comparisons were carried out by means of surveys on ship masters (captains), chief officers, deck officers, and superintendents. Five criteria—Crew, Equipment, Company, Structure, and ISM (International Safety Management) were weighted using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Finally, Bridge Safety Support System (BSSS) was developed according to criteria weights. In this way, best choices can be offered to ship charterers about which ship is better for a company’s interests. And, carrying out bridge inspections and corrective actions will be more reliable and effective for maritime transportation. Statistical data and vessel improvements will be obtained in BSSS. The strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS) error of ballistic missile is generated by the mutual influence of gyroscope and accelerometer, and the recursive model is completely different from that of gimbaled INS. In the paper, a discrete error recursive model was obtained by studying the applied SINS error model of ballistic missile, and the discrete Kalman filtering simulation based on the model was carried out. The simulated results show that the model can depict the SINS error exactly and provide the advantages for research on integrated guidance and improved hit accuracy.

Reliable modeling of river sediments transport is important as it is a defining factor of the economic viability of dams, the durability of hydroelectric-equipment, river susceptibility to pollution, suitability for navigation, and potential for aesthetics and fish habitat. The capability of a new machine learning model, fuzzy c-means based neuro-fuzzy system calibrated using the hybrid particle swarm optimization-gravitational search algorithm(ANFIS-FCM-PSOGSA) in improving the estimation accuracy of river suspended sediment loads(SSLs) is investigated in the current study. The outcomes of the proposed method were compared with those obtained using the fuzzy c-means based neuro-fuzzy system calibrated using particle swarm optimization(ANFIS-FCM-PSO), ANFIS-FCM, and sediment rating curve(SRC) models. Various input combinations involving lagged river flow(Q) and suspended sediment(S) values were used for model development. The effect of Q and S on the model’s accuracy also was assessed by including the difference between lagged Q and S values as inputs. The model performance was assessed using the root mean square error(RMSE), mean absolute error(MAE), Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency(NSE), and coefficient of determination(R~2) and several graphical comparison methods. The results showed that the proposed model enhanced the prediction performance of the ANFIS-FCM-PSO(or ANFIS-FCM) models by 8.14%(1.72%), 14.7%(5.71%), 12.5%(2.27%), and 25.6%(1.86%),in terms of the RMSE, MAE, NSE and R~2, respectively. The current study established the potential of the proposed ANFIS-FCM-PSOGSA model for simulation of the cumulative sediment load. The modeling results revealed the potential effects of the river flow lags on the sediment transport quantification.

Seamless navigation has attracted lots of attention and many methods have been reported in the literature or made available as commercial *** process of navigation can be interpreted as a continuous movement of 3D objects from one unoccupied 3D indoor/outdoor space to *** a technical perspective,a 3D navigation model is one of the critical components that should be available to perform successful navigation.A major approach to build a unified navigation model to support seamless path computation is linking indoor navigation networks to outdoor road/street-based *** of different sources of indoor and outdoor navigation networks,the major approach fails to build up true seamless navigation *** regards to this,we propose a unified 3D space-based navigation model(U3DSNM).The presented model ensures all types of spaces for navigation(indoor,semi-indoor,semi-outdoor,and outdoor)have the same representation,management methods,and network derivation approach,thereby building up unified navigation networks to support seamless navigation paths *** model can be linked to the international standards(data models)that are also based on spaces,such as IndoorGML and the on-going version of CityGML *** navigation path planning cases show the feasibility of U3DSNM.
