LC Packing Materials for Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis

The author has prepared novel liquid chromatography (LC) packing materials for pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis. Those include LC packing materials for direct serum injection assays of drugs and their metabolites, LC packing materials for resolution of enantiomeric drugs, and uniformly sized molecularly imprinted polymers for drugs and their metabolites. This review article deals with the preparation of these materials and the pharmaceutical and biomedical applications of them in recognition of The Society of Chromatographic sciences Award.

Condensed and hydrolysable tannins are non-toxic natural polyphenols that are a commercial commodity industrialized for tanning hides to obtain leather and for a growing number of other industrial applications mainly to substitute petroleum-based *** are a definite class of sustainable materials of the forestry *** have been in operation for hundreds of years to manufacture leather and now for a growing number of applications in a variety of other industries,such as wood adhesives,metal coating,pharmaceutical/medical applications and several *** review presents the main sources,either already or potentially commercial of this forestry by-materials,their industrial and laboratory extraction systems,their systems of analysis with their advantages and drawbacks,be these methods so simple to even appear primitive but nonetheless of proven effectiveness,or very modern and *** constitutes a basic but essential summary of what is necessary to know of these sustainable *** doing so,the review highlights some of the main challenges that remain to be addressed to deliver the quality and economics of tannin supply necessary to fulfill the industrial production requirements for some materials-based uses.

Green building projects have been adopted by many universities in Australia as part of their renovation and *** order to investigate the motivations of academic decision makers to invest in green facilities,a comprehensive analysis of media articles of 24 green academic buildings approved by the Green Building Council of Australia(between 2004 and 2011)were analysed using a qualitative analytical approach based on grounded *** in this work show that the decision makers in Australian universities are more likely to be driven by the direct benefits green buildings brought to the universities,enhancing universities’reputation and meeting the specific needs for education and *** factors that deal with improving universities’financial conditions and environmental protection were found to be a lower significance for *** the connections between the motivating factors also reveal the indirect benefits of green buildings which are an enhancement in reputation by fulfilling an environmental protection responsibility and research capacity enhancement by supplying technical study opportunities for students and *** paper proposes an approach to deal with the complex network of vague and subjective concepts of the green buildings *** supplies researchers with tools for analysing abstract concepts and determining their interactions.

Marine macroalgal sulfated fucose-containing polysaccharides,like fucoidan,have drawn significant attention due to their biotechnological potentials,such as anti-cancer,antioxidant,and anti-cholinesterase *** fucoidan derived from brown macroalgae Sargassum angustifolium species(FSA)was investigated for its cytotoxic effects and alterations in cell proliferation,and cell cycle-related gene expression in the present study occurred on NB4 cell *** results showed that FSA would induce p53,p21,pro-apoptotic genes and increase expression of the p15 gene as a cell arrest ***,FSA inhibited the anti-apoptotic effect of the Bcl-2 gene and decreased dnmt-1 gene *** significantly exhibited potent 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH)radical scavenging activity(p<0.05)with an IC_(50) value of 0.157 mg/mL and showed moderate anti-acetylcholinesterase activity with an IC_(50) value of 1.20μg/*** results indicated the potential of FSA for the development of therapeutic or preventive agents of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease mainly through cytotoxic effect and AChE(acetylcholinesterase)inhibition as well as additional antioxidant capacities.

The renin angiotensin system(RAS) is classically conceived as a circulating hormonal system involved in blood pressure control and hydroelectrolyte balance. The discovery that RAS components are locally expressed in a wide range of organs and tissues,including the liver,pointed to a role for this system in the pathogenesis of several conditions including hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis. It has been widely reported that the classical RAS axis composed by the angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE)-angiotensin(Ang) Ⅱ-Ang type 1(AT1) receptor mediates pro-inflammatory,pro-thrombotic,and pro-fibrotic processes. On the other hand,the alternative axis comprising ACE2-Ang-(1-7)-Mas receptor seems to play a protective role by frequently opposing Ang Ⅱ action. Chronic hepatitis B(CHB) is one of the leading causes of liver fibrosis,accounting for the death of nearly one million people worldwide. Liver fibrosis is a key factor to determine therapeutic interventions for patients with CHB. However,the establishment of non-invasive and accurate methods to detect reversible stages of liver fibrosis is still a challenge. In an elegant study published in the 36 th issue of the World Journal of Gastroenterology,Noguchi et al showed the predictive value of serum ACE levels in detecting not only advanced stages of liver fibrosis but also initial and intermediate fibrotic stages. The serum levels of ACE might represent an accurate,non-invasive,widely available,and easy method to evaluate fibrosis related to CHB. Moreover,therapies involving the inhibition of the classical RAS axis components might be promising in the control of CHB-related liver fibrosis.

Objective: To test the effectiveness of conidial spore formulations [Aspergillus tubingensis(***) and Trichoderma harzianum(***)] against tropical bed bugs, Cimex ***: Spore formulations were made from two fungal strains, *** and *** bed bugs were exposed to the conidial spores placed soaked onto a fabric cloth for 1 h and the mortality counts were recorded daily until 14 ***: Mean survival times based on Kaplan–Meier survival analysis showed no significant differences between all the concentrations in both the fungal isolates:*** and ***, the evaluation of both the isolates in terms of virulence resulted in low lethal hours in all the concentrations except for the high concentration of ***(LT_(50)= 44.629 h) at the conidial exposure of 1 × 10~6 spores/*** mortality of the bed bugs was observed from Day 6 to Day 12, ranging from 13% to 90% in all three concentrations of *** reference to the *** exposure, the concentration of 1 × 10~4 spores/mL displayed a gradual increase in the percentage mortality of 90 on Day ***: Approaches to the bed bugs treatment should be explored in-depth using a natural biological agent like fungus especially *** to reduce this pest population, in order to replace chemical methods.

Effects of probiotic supplementation on abdominal pain severity in pediatric patients with irritable bowel syndrome:a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials

Background Probiotic supplementation has been used to alleviate abdominal pain in children and adolescents with irritable bowel syndrome(IBS),but the evidence is not ***,a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials(RCTs)were performed to investigate the effects of probiotic supplementation on abdominal pain in pediatric patients with *** PubMed/MEDLINE,Web of Science,Scopus,Cochrane Library,and Embase were the available databases searched to find relevant randomized clinical trials up to April *** effect size was expressed as weighted mean differenee(WMD)and 95% confidence interval(CI).Results Seven RCTs with 441 participants were included,from which the meta-analysis demonstrated that probiotic supplementation has a significant effect on reducing abdominal pain in pediatric patients with IBS(WMD=-2.36:95%CI-4.12 to-0.60;P=0.009).Although our study involved children and adolescents(≤18 years),the effects of probiotic supplementation seem to be more potent in patients under 10 years old(WMD=-2.55;95%CI-2.84 to -2.27)compared to patients aged 10-18 years(WMD=-1.70;95%CI-2.18 to -1.22).The length of supplementation longer than four weeks was more effective(WMD=-2.43;95%CI-2.76 to -2.09).Conclusion Probiotic supplementation can reduce abdominal pain in pediatric patients with IBS.

Red algae-derived isofloridoside activates the sweet taste receptor T1R2/T1R3

Isofloridoside (IF) is a naturally occurring galactosylglycerol compound with a refreshing sweet taste. It is found in red algae, where it acts as a photosynthetic intermediate. However, the mechanism by which IF elicits sweetness has not been determined. In this study, we investigate the interaction between IF and the sweet taste receptor T1R2/T1R3. We show that IF causes an increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration and an increase in Erk phosphorylation in T1R2/T1R3-expressing HEK293T cells, indicating that IF interacts with T1R2/T1R3. IF also activates endogenously expressed T1R2/T1R3 in mouse small intestinal endocrine L-cells, and promotes the secretion of the incretin glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). In silico docking simulations of IF and T1R2/T1R3 predict that IF forms hydrogen bonds with Tyr103 in the extracellular Venus flytrap domain of T1R2. This result is consistent with the binding mode of many other sweet-tasting molecules. We found that IF have the potential as a new alternative sweetener.
