Growth and physiological responses of Agriophyllum squarrosum to sand burial stress

Agriophyllum squarrosum is an annual desert plant widely distributed on mobile and semi-mobile dunes in all the sandy deserts of China. We studied the growth and physiological properties of A. squarrosum seedlings under different sand burial depths in 2010 and 2011 at Horqin Sandy Land, Inner Mongolia to understand the ability and mechanism that A. squarrosum withstands sand burial. The results showed that A. squarrosum had a strong ability to withstand sand burial. Its survival rate, plant height and biomass increased significantly at a burial depth 25% of seedling height and decreased significantly only when the burial depth exceeded the height of the seedlings; some plants still survived even if the burial depth reached 266% of a seedling height. The malondialdehyde （MDA） content and membrane permeability of the plant did not change significantly as long as the burial depth was not greater than the seedling height; lipid peroxidation increased and cell membranes were damaged if the burial depth was increased further. When subjected to sand burial stress, superoxide dismutase （SOD） and peroxidase （POD） activities and free proline content increased in the seedlings, while the catalase （CAT） activity and soluble sugar content decreased. Sand burial did not lead to water stress. Reductions in photosynthetic area and cell membrane damage caused by sand burial may be the major mechanisms increasing mortality and inhibiting growth of the seedling. But the increases in SOD and POD activities and proline content must play a certain role in reducing sand burial damage.

Effects of temperature and water limitation on the germination of Stipagrostis ciliata seeds collected from Sidi Bouzid Governorate in Central Tunisia

Most ecological studies in North Africa reveal a process of continuous degradation of rangeland ecosystems as a result of overgrazing. This degradation appears across the decreasing of perennial grass diversity. Indeed, the majority of steppe ecosystems are characterized by a low density of perennial grass species at present. This study evaluated the effects of temperature and water limitation on the seed germination of Stipagrostis ciliata（Desf.） de Winter, a perennial grass species. The seeds were collected from the Bou Hedma Park, Sidi Bouzid Governorate, Central Tunisia. The thermal time and hydrothermal time models were used to describe the seed germination of S. ciliata under different water potentials and temperatures. The germination response of S. ciliata seeds in darkness was evaluated over a range of temperatures（15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 30°C and 35°C） and across a wide range of osmotic potentials（0.0, –0.2, –0.6, –1.2, –1.6 and –2.0 MPa） of the polyethylene glycol（PEG6000） solutions at each temperature level. Among the tested temperatures, 25°C was found to be the optimal temperature to the germination of S. ciliata seeds. The final germination percentage（75.2%） was obtained with distilled water. The progressive decrease of osmotic potential of the PEG6000 solutions inhibited the seed germination. However, the number of days to first germination was increased with a reduction of osmotic potential. A significant positive relationship was identified between final germination percentage of S. ciliata seeds and osmotic potential of the PEG6000 solutions, with R^2 ranging from 0.5678 to 0.8761. Furthermore, a high degree of congruency between predicted and observed germination time course curves was observed. In general, S. ciliata exhibits a significant adaptation capacity for water limitation and high temperature in arid ecosystems.

Upper Yellow River air concentrations of organochlorine pesticides estimated from tree bark, and their relationship with socioeconomic indices

Organochlorine pesticide （OCP） concentrations in tree bark from the upper Yellow River region were determined. Total OCP concentrations ranged from 2.7 to 82 ng/g dw, with a mean of 20 ng/g dw. Concentrations of total （E） DDTs （0.49-37 ng/g dw）, HCHs （0.55-4.5 ng/g dw）, and HCB （0.1-1.0 ng/g dw） were much higher than the other OCPs and accounted for 89% of the YOCP concentrations. p,p＇-DDT was the dominant member of the DDT pesticide group and [5-HCH was the dominant HCH isomer. The p,p＇-DDT/p,p＇-DDE and ct-HCH/y-HCH ratios suggested that there were recent DDT and y-HCH releases. OCP concentrations in the air were estimated from the tree bark, and the estimated median 3ZDDTs, EHCHs, and HCB concentrations in the air were 0.09, 0.14, and 0.024 pg/m3, respectively. The relationship between total OCP concentrations and socioeconomic and natural environment indices were assessed using multiple linear regression analysis, and a regression equation including all these factors was obtained. Population density and tertiary industry were the two dominant factors that appeared to affect OCP concentrations in the upper Yellow River region.

Pollen wall pattern in Arabidopsis

The pollen wall is a solid and variously sculptured structure. This pattern is determined inside a tetrad. During meiosis, the callose wall is formed outside of the meiocyte/microspore to form a tetrad. Then, primexine is deposited between the callose wall and the microspore plasma membrane which will become undulated. The sporopollenin deposits on top of the undulated membrane and develops into the pollen wall pattern, while the callose wall is gradually degraded. In recent years, much progress has been made in the study of pollen wall pattern formation, at both molecular and genetic levels. In this review,we summarize these achievements mainly in Arabidopsis.

Tadalafil treatment had a modest effect on endothelial cell damage and repair ability markers in men with erectile dysfunction and vascular risk

The number of the circulating angiogenic cells （CACs） and colony forming units （CFUs） derived from cultured circulating mononuclear cells （MNCs） represents a laboratory surrogate for endothelial cell repair ability. The serum of men with erectile dysfunction （ED） and vascular risk factors （VRFs） showed an increased level of endothelial cell damage/dysfunction markers and reduced the numbers of CACs and CFUs derived from the cells of healthy men. We analyzed whether treating men with ED and VRFs with the selective phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor tadalafil improved the endothelial cell repair ability and reduced the levels of the serum markers of endothelial cell damage/dysfunction. MNCs from healthy men were cultured with 20% serum from 36 ED patients to obtain CACs and CFUs. The ED patients were evaluated before and after 4weeks of treatment with tadalafil （20 mg every other day） or with a placebo. The tadalafil treatment improved erectile function （P = 0.0028）, but had no effect on the inhibitory effects of serum from ED patients on the CACs and CFUs derived from healthy men. The levels of endothelin-1 （P = 0.011） and tissue type plasminogen activator （P = 0.005） were reduced after treatment compared to baseline and those of the placebo group, whereas no changes were observed in the E-selectin levels. The tadalafil treatment in the ED patients with VRFs resulted in only a modest effect on the laboratory measures of the endothelial cell damage/dysfunction and repair ability. The proposed beneficial effect of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibition on vascular homeostasis requires further analysis.
