Separation of galena and chalcopyrite using the difference in their surface acid corrosion characteristics

Galena(PbS)and chalcopyrite(CuFeS_(2))are sulfide minerals that exhibit good floatability characteristics.Thus,efficiently separating them via common flotation is challenging.Herein,a new method of surface sulfuric acid corrosion in conjunction with flotation separation was proposed,and the efficient separation of galena and chalcopyrite was successfully realized.Contact angle test results showed a substantial decrease in surface contact angle and a selective inhibition of surface floatability for corroded galena.Meanwhile,the contact angle and floatability of corroded chalcopyrite remained almost unaffected.Scanning electron microscope results confirmed that sulfuric acid corrosion led to the formation of a dense oxide layer on the galena surface,whereas the chalcopyrite surface remained unaltered.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that the chemical state of S^(2-)on the surface of corroded galena was oxidized to SO_(4)^(2-).A layer of hydrophilic PbSO4was formed on the surface,leading to a sharp decrease in galena floatability.Meanwhile,new hydrophobic CuS_(2),CuS,and Cu_(1-x)Fe_(1-y)S_(2-z)species exhibiting good floatability were generated on the chalcopyrite surface.Finally,theoretical analysis results were further verified by corrosion–flotation separation experiments.The galena–chalcopyrite mixture was completely separated via flotation separation under appropriate corrosion acidity,corrosion temperature,and corrosion time.A novel approach has been outlined in this study,providing potential applications in the efficient separation of refractory copper–lead sulfide ore.

Experimental and numerical simulation on the sliding process of roof rock blocks triggered by dynamic disturbance

With the excavation of underground opening,the roof rock block may fall under external dynamic disturbance.In this paper,the roof rock mass was simplified as a rock block system composed of trapezoidal rock blocks.A series of experiments and numerical simulations were performed to study the sliding process of the key block under the horizontal static clamping load and vertical impact disturbance.The propagation of stress wave in the block system were captured and analyzed by using high-speed camera and digital image correlation technique.The results reveal that a pendulum-type wave was generated due to the propagation and superposition of stress waves in the block system.Therefore,the governing mechanism of the sliding displacement of the key block was clarified based on the propagation of incident stress waves or pendulum-type waves.Meanwhile,it is found that the sliding distance of the key block decreases in a power function with the increasing friction coefficient,or decreases in a parabolic function with the increasing trapezoid internal angle.Finally,a case study on the roof block sliding of the roadway at a gold mine was conducted,and it is concluded that the sliding of the key block resulted from the coupled effects of"shear driving"and"low friction"driven by stress wave propagation,regardless of a single or multi-layer rock block system.These results may provide technical guideline for preventing rock-falling accidents caused by blasting distur-bances in underground mining.

Research on the Relationship between Grain Composition and Repose Angle of Coal Gangue in Dongkuang Mine, Heshan City, Guangxi, China

Heshan, a city in Southwest China, has been built over an old coal mining area. Due to low level of reclamation, coal gangue had been stacked in large heaps and caused geological environ- mental problems. To facilitate designing management project of coal gangue, we made an investigation of the largest coal gangue heap in Dongkuang Mine of Heshan. Firstly, the grain composition of coal gangue was estimated through the sieving method, then the representative grading curve was drawn through the statistics method of coarse grain content, and lastly the relationship between the repose an- gle and grain grading was studied by piling up coal gangue with different mix proportion. The result indicates that there is a wider range of grain size in the upper part of coal gangue heap, and the repre- sentative grain grading is well graded and easy to be compacted as filling materials. Besides, the wavy relationship curve of repose angle and coarse grain content shows that the content of 70% is the infiec- tion point of ascent stage and 85% the inflection point of descent stage of the repose angle. What＇s more, the repose angle corresponding to the representative grading of coal gangue is approximately 38.4° and this has guiding significance for management project of coal gangue.

Thermodynamic theory of flotation for a complex multiphase solid -liquid system and high-entropy flotation

The flotation of complex solid–liquid multiphase systems involve interactions among multiple components,the core problem facing flotation theory.Meanwhile,the combined use of multicomponent flotation reagents to improve mineral flotation has become an important issue in studies on the efficient use of refractory mineral resources.However,studying the flotation of complex solid–liquid systems is extremely difficult,and no systematic theory has been developed to date.In addition,the physical mechanism associated with combining reagents to improve the flotation effect has not been unified,which limits the development of flotation theory and the progress of flotation technology.In this study,we applied theoretical thermodynamics to a solid–liquid flotation system and used changes in the entropy and Gibbs free energy of the reagents adsorbed on the mineral surface to establish thermodynamic equilibrium equations that de-scribe interactions among various material components while also introducing adsorption equilibrium constants for the flotation reagents adsorbed on the mineral surface.The homogenization effect on the mineral surface in pulp solution was determined using the chemical potentials of the material components of the various mineral surfaces required to maintain balance.The flotation effect can be improved through synergy among multicomponent flotation reagents;its physical essence is the thermodynamic law that as the number of compon-ents of flotation reagents on the mineral surface increases,the surface adsorption entropy change increases,and the Gibbs free energy change of adsorption decreases.According to the results obtained using flotation thermodynamics theory,we established high-entropy flotation theory and a technical method in which increasing the types of flotation reagents adsorbed on the mineral surface,increasing the adsorption entropy change of the flotation reagents,decreasing the Gibbs free energy change,and improving the adsorption efficiency and stability of the flotation reagents improve

Sulfidization regulation of cuprite by pre-oxidation using sodium hypochlorite as an oxidant

The direct sulfidization of cuprite is inefficient because cuprite is a copper-oxide mineral with a strong surface hydrophilicity.In this study,oxidant was used to modify cuprite surfaces to regulate the sulfidization of cuprite.Microflotation tests showed that the flotation recovery of pre-oxidized cuprite was nearly25% higher than that of direct sulfidization flotation,which indicates that the cuprite surface activity was enhanced after pre-oxidation by Cu(Ⅰ) species(weak affinity with sulfur ions) transformation to Cu(Ⅱ)species(strong affinity with sulfur ions).Zeta potential,scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry results showed that pre-oxidation improved cuprite sulfidization and promoted the formation of copper-sulfide species on the cuprite surfaces.The mineral surface stability and thus,xanthate species adsorption on the cuprite surfaces were improved.The surface-adsorption measurements and infrared spectroscopy showed that a large amount of xanthate species was adsorbed onto the sulfidized cuprite surfaces after pre-oxidation,which enhanced the cuprite hydrophobicity and improved the cuprite flotation.

A study on the rare earth ore containing scandium by high gradient magnetic separation

Scandium (Sc) concentration from the rare earth ore by high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) was determined on the basis of Sc content, geophysical parameter determination and the magnetic analyses of the ore. Growth of covellite crystal onto azurite surface during sulfurization and its response to flotation behavior

In this work,the growth of copper sulfide crystal onto azurite surfaces during sulfurization and its response to flotation are investigated.Filed emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(FESEM) and X-ray diffraction(XRD) studies confirmed that the sulfurization of azurite is not limited to the mineral surface,but rather penetrates into the bulk to form covellite crystal(synCuS),creating favorable conditions for the stable adsorption of xanthate and greatly promoting the azurite flotation.Additionally,as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry(TOF-SIMS) analyses,a redox reaction occurred during this process,and Cu(Ⅱ) onto the mineral surface was reduced to Cu(Ⅰ).Correspondingly,reduced S^(2-) was oxidized to(S_(2))^(2-),(S_n)^(-2),and even to deeper oxidation state S~0,(S_(x)O_(y))^(n-) and SO_(4)^(2-).Excess sodium sulfide strengthens copper sulfide to form onto the azurite surface,and provides enough raw material for crystal copper sulfide to grow,resulting in the formation of "flake-like" covellite with a better crystallinity.However,the floatability of azurite decreased dramatically under this condition,because the generated massive colloidal copper sulfide in flotation pulp deteriorates the flotation environment,resulting in a decreased effective adsorption of collector onto azurite surfaces.

Enhanced sulfidization of azurite surfaces by ammonium phosphate and its effect on flotation

Although azurite is one of the most important copper oxide minerals,the recovery of this mineral via sulfidization-xanthate flotation is typically unsatisfactory.The present work demonstrated the enhanced sulfidization of azurite surfaces using ammonia phosphate((NH_(4))_(3)PO_(4)) together with Na_(2)S,based on micro-flotation experiments,time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry(ToF-SIMS),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),zeta-potential measurements,contact angle measurements,Fourier-transform infrared(FT-IR)spectroscopy,and ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)spectroscopy.Micro-flotation experiments showed that the floatability of azurite was increased following the simultaneous addition of(NH_(4))_(3)PO_(4)and Na_(2)S.ToF-SIMS and XPS analyses demonstrated the formation of a high content of S species on the azurite surface and an increase in the number of Cu(I)species after exposure to(NH_(4))_(3)PO_(4)and Na_(2)S,compared with the azurite-Na_(2)S system.The zeta potential of azurite particles was negatively shifted and the contact angle on the azurite surface was increased with the addition of(NH_(4))_(3)PO_(4)prior to Na_(2)S.These results indicate that treatment with(NH_(4))_(3)PO_(4) enhances the sulfidization of azurite surfaces,which in turn promotes xanthate attachment.FT-IR and UV-Vis analyses confirmed that the addition of(NH_(4))_(3)PO_(4) increased the adsorption of xanthate with reducing the consumption of xanthate during the azurite flotation process.Thus,(NH_(4))_(3)PO_(4) has a beneficial effect on the sulfidization flotation of azurite.

Flotation separation of scheelite from calcite using luteolin as a novel depressant

This paper proposes luteolin(LUT)as a novel depressant for the flotation-based separation of scheelite and calcite in a sodium oleate(NaOL)system.The suitability of LUT as a calcite depressant is confirmed through micro-flotation testing.At pH=9,with LUT concentration of 50 mg·L^(-1) and NaOL concentration of 50 mg·L^(-1),scheelite recovery reaches 80.3%.Calcite,on the other hand,exhibits a recovery rate of 17.6%,indicating a significant difference in floatability between the two minerals.Subsequently,the surface modifica-tions of scheelite and calcite following LUT treatment are characterized using adsorption capacity testing,Zeta potential analysis,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),and atomic force microscopy(AFM).The study in-vestigates the selective depressant mechanism of LUT on calcite.Adsorption capacity testing and Zeta potential analysis demonstrate sub-stantial absorption of LUT on the surface of calcite,impeding the further adsorption of sodium oleate,while its impact on scheelite is min-imal.FT-IR and XPS analyses reveal the selective adsorption of LUT onto the surface of calcite,forming strong chemisorption bonds between the hydroxyl group and calcium ions present.AFM directly illustrates the distinct adsorption densities of LUT on the two miner-al types.Consequently,LUT can effectively serve as a depressant for calcite,enabling the successful separation of scheelite and calcite.

Geological characteristics and metallogenic significance of the Devonian intermediate-basic volcanic rocks in the Dachang deposit, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region

Recently discovered intermediate-basic volcanic rocks in the Devonian strata at Dachang, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are dominated by basalts and andesites. Most of them belong to the calc-alkali and alkali series. Petrology and geochemistry data indicate that the volcanic rocks may be formed in a continental rift environment. The volcanic rocks are in conformable contact with the overlying and underlying wall rocks, with such typical sedimentary structures as laminated and striped ones, and the host rocks of the volcanic rocks contain lots of marine fossils such as tentaculite. Many pieces of evidence indicate that the eruption environment of the volcanic rocks is a sea-facies one. The volcanic rocks are of the LREE-enrichment type, with high ratios of light rare-earth elements to heavy rare-earth elements. In addition, they display moderately negative δEu anomalies and moderately negative δCe anomalies with a higher degree of LREE and HREE fractionation. Through the Q-cluster analysis of the REE samples, it is indicated that the ores have a closer relation with the layered volcanic rocks, and also possess a certain inheritance-consistency relationship with the layered volcanic rocks. The source of ore-forming materials may be related with volcanism. It is proposed that the ore deposit in the study area should be genetically explained as the result of marine volcano-sedimentary exhalation of hot water and late superposition-reworking.
