An indicator model for assessing community resilience to the COVID-19 pandemic and its validation: A case study in Hong Kong

The COVID-19 outbreak had a significant negative impact on the world,and the fifth wave of COVID-19 in Hong Kong brought a considerable shock to Chinese *** is a growing call for more resilient ***,empirical evidence and validation of modeling studies of resilience indicators for urban community responses to the COVID-19 pandemic still need to be *** this study,a resilience assessment indicator model comprising 4 subsystems,7 indicators,and 12 variables was developed to assess the resilience of Hong Kong communities in response to COVID-19(i.e.,Resilience Index).Furthermore,this study utilized regression models such as geographically weighted regression(GWR)and multiscale GWR(MGWR)to validate the resilience model proposed in this study at the model and variable *** the regression model,the Resilience Index and the individual variables in the resilience model are explanatory variables,and the outcomes of the COVID-19 pandemic(confirmed cases,confirmation rate,discharged cases,discharge rate)are dependent *** results showed that:(i)the resilience of Hong Kong communities to the COvID-19 pandemic was not strong in general and showed some clustered spatial distribution characteristics;(i)the validation results at the model level showed that the Resilience Index did not explain the consequences of the COvID-19 pandemic to a high degree;(ii)the validation results at the variable level showed that the MGWR model was the best at identifying the relationships between explanatory variables and the dependent variable;and(iv)compared with the model-level assessment results,the variable-level assessment explained the consequences of the COvID-19 pandemic better than the model level assessment *** above analysis and the spatial distribution maps of the resilience variables can provide empirically based and targeted insights for policymakers.

Complications after pediatric percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy: comparison of the push and pull technique

Purpose Various complications are associatedwith percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy(PEG)procedures in *** push technique is being increasingly used,but its complications are insufficiently *** aimed to assess all complications related to PEG procedures and compare the safety of the pull and push *** Retrospective review of consecutive pediatric patients who underwent PEG between 2002 and *** In total,216 children underwent 217 PEG *** push technique was used in 138(64%)cases,and the pull technique in 79(36%)*** median follow-up time was 6.1(0.1-18.3)*** complication rate was high(57%)and patients experienced complications years after the ***,51%and 67%of patients experienced complications in the push and pull groups,*** rates of minor and major complications were higher in the pull group than in the push group(63%vs 48%,p=0.028;and 11%vs 6%,p=0.140,respectively).Reoperation was also more common in the pull group(17%vs 7%,p=0.020).Conclusions The overall complication rate of PEG procedures is ***,most complications are mild and do not require *** increasing push technique appears to be safer than the traditional pull *** long-term morbidity is related to gastrostomies in children.

Global systematic review and meta-analysis of knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards dengue fever among the general population

Promoting Older Adults' Engagement in Disaster Recovery Through Supportive Relationships, Partnerships, and Collaboration: Perspectives of social Work Practitioners and Human Service Professionals

Shifting demographics—that is, the growing number of older adults in Canada and internationally—and intersecting climatic risks create a complex landscape of aging in place in disaster contexts. Some older adults are vulnerable due to their underlying health conditions and limited physical mobility. Yet they also exhibit resilience in a distinct manner, owing to their wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and ability to navigate adversities. This article elucidates potential avenues for promoting the involvement of older adults in disaster recovery efforts. Our intention is to recognize and foster older adult resilience and mitigate vulnerability by drawing upon insights from the study titled “In the Aftermath of the 2016 Alberta Wildfires: The Role of social Work Practitioners and Human Service Professionals in Long-Term Disaster Recovery.” Employing a qualitative research approach, that study recruited 51 participants for semistructured interviews and focus groups. A thematic analysis of the collected data unveiled the pivotal roles played by social workers and human service practitioners in facilitating recovery from the 2016 wildfires in the research. Notably, three overarching themes emerged concerning the promotion of older adults' involvement in disaster recovery: fostering supportive relationships, building partnerships and enhancing collaboration, and addressing ongoing challenges. These findings offer valuable insights into how social work practitioners and human service professionals can effectively facilitate the engagement of older adults in disaster recovery initiatives. This article emphasizes the significance of actively promoting the participation of older adults in disaster mitigation efforts, thereby fostering greater resilience within communities.

“If I Do not Go to Work, They Will Die!” Dual Roles of Older-Adult Personal Support Workers' Contributions During the COVID-19 Pandemic

When COVID-19 devastated older-adult organizations(long-term care homes and retirement homes), most public attention was directed toward the older-adult residents rather than their service providers. This was especially true in the case of personal support workers, some of whom are over the age of 55, putting them in two separate categories in the COVID-19 settings:(1) a vulnerable and marginalized group who are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19;and(2) essential healthcare workers. Since the current disaster-driven research, practice, and policy have primarily focused on generalized assumptions that older-adults are a vulnerable, passive, and dependent group rather than recognizing their diversity, expertise, assets, and experiences, this study aimed to identify their contributions from the perspective of older-adult personal support worker(OAPSW). This qualitative study conducted in-depth interviews, inviting 15 OAPSWs from the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. This study uncovered the OAPSWs' contribution at three levels: individual(enhancing physical health, mental health, and overall well-being), work(improving working environment and service and supporting co-workers), and family(protecting their nuclear and extended families). The outcomes inform the older-adult research, practice, policy, public discourse, and education by enhancing the appreciation of older-adults' diverse strengths and promoting their engagement and contributions in disaster settings.

Zeno and the Wrong Understanding of Motion—A Philosophical-Mathematical Inquiry into the Concept of Finitude as a Peculiarity of Infinity

In contrast to the solutions of applied mathematics to Zeno’s paradoxes, I focus on the concept of motion and show that, by distinguishing two different forms of motion, Zeno’s apparent paradoxes are not paradoxical at all. Zeno’s paradoxes indirectly prove that distances are not composed of extensionless points and, in general, that a higher dimension cannot be completely composed of lower ones. Conversely, lower dimensions can be understood as special cases of higher dimensions. To illustrate this approach, I consider Cantor’s only apparent proof that the real numbers are uncountable. However, his widely accepted indirect proof has the disadvantage that it depends on whether there is another way to make the real numbers countable. Cantor rightly assumes that there can be no smallest number between 0 and 1, and therefore no beginning of counting. For this reason he arbitrarily lists the real numbers in order to show with his diagonal method that this list can never be complete. The situation is different if we start with the largest number between 0 and 1 (0.999…) and use the method of an inverted triangle, which can be understood as a special fractal form. Here we can construct a vertical and a horizontal stratification with which it is actually possible to construct all real numbers between 0 and 1 without exception. Each column is infinite, and each number in that column is the starting point of a new triangle, while each row is finite. Even in a simple sine curve, we experience finiteness with respect to the y-axis and infinity with respect to the x-axis. The first parts of this article show that Zeno’s assumptions contradict the concept of motion as such, so it is not surprising that this misconstruction leads to contradictions. In the last part, I discuss Cantor’s diagonal method and explain the method of an inverted triangle that is internally structured like a fractal by repeating this inverted triangle at each column. 目的系统评价和整合社区居家老年人跌倒经历的看法与体验,为后续发展跌倒预防及管理的干预提供信息,为健康照护实践提供建议。方法依据乔安娜布里格斯研究所(Joanna Briggs Institute,JBI)质性系统评价方法论进行质性研究meta整合,在PubMed、CINAHL、PsycInfo、Embase、Web of science等数据库进行检索,发表时间限定为2010年1月至2023年5月,仅纳入经同行评审的英文文献。使用JBI质性研究质量评价标准评价纳入文献的方法学质量,按照ConQual评分准则检验整合结果的信度。本综述方案已在PROSPERO注册(CRD 42023421789)。结果共纳入10项研究,方法学质量评价得分为60%至90%。提炼59个完好明确的结果,将相似结果归纳组合形成7个类别,并综合成3个整合结果,在ConQual评分上,综合结果2评为中等,综合结果1和3评为低等。整合结果1:跌倒后老年人经历了身体的损伤和疼痛、日常活动受限、社交受限、独立性降低或丧失、并有恐惧和无助感。整合结果2:经历跌倒后,老年人反思跌倒的原因,并识别、解释风险因素。整合结果3:老年人对跌倒原因和后果有正面和负面的看法,其采取的应对跌倒的措施包括使用辅助器具、纠正风险因素、寻求医疗帮助、关注身体和心理状况等。结论医疗卫生提供者应重视老年人跌倒后的感受、经历,以及对跌倒原因和影响的反思,进行特定的干预。今后还需要进行纵向研究,以检测跌倒对老年人的长期影响,深入了解他们的反思、感知、态度和预防行为随时间的改变情况。

In this editorial,we discuss the status of a therapeutic approach to emotional reactions accompanying thermal skin *** are considered a major health problem,as well as an economic and social problem,with potentially devastating and life-changing *** affect a wide range of patients with different damage mechanisms,varied depths,and localizations of the *** most common are thermal burns,with more than 11 million occurrences annually according to the World Health Organization *** skin injuries are among the most tragic and catastrophic injuries,almost unsurpassed in terms of severity,morbidity,and mortality,as well as functional,aesthetic,social,economic,and psychological *** survivors face stress,anxiety,depression,low self-esteem,body deformity,social isolation,unemployment,financial burden,and family *** advances in acute burn care have allowed researchers and physicians to pay more attention to other effects of burns,focusing on psychological consequences in *** from the significant improvements in routine protocols,it seems useful to take care of psychological disturbances that occur simultaneously but may emerge as the most lasting outcome of those *** that sense,various standards and additional approaches may be involved to achieve overall recovery.
