An examination of the effect of loneliness on the innovative behavior of health science faculty students

Background:Contributing to the innovative behavior of individuals in the health management process is a desirable condition for increased health institution performance.The relationship between the sense of loneliness and individual innovation behaviors has not been studied and relevant literature is extremely limited.The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of an individual's sense of loneliness on their innovative behavior.Methods:The research was performed between January and October 2018.The effects of loneliness feelings on the individual innovative behaviors of 451 health science faculty students were measured.The data were collected using the "Individual Information Form," the "individual innovation scale," and the "University of California Los Angeles loneliness scale." The reliability and validity of the scales were tested with Structural Equation Modeling.Results:It was found that the female participants showed exhibited more innovative behavior than the men.However, there was no significant difference in the loneliness status of participants by gender.A group of 23-year-old individuals showed a significant difference in the risk taking dimension compared to other age groups.First-grade students had more points in the experimental openness and opinion leadership sub-dimension than the other classes.It was observed that the behavior is molded as the education level increases.The regression models showed that loneliness has a negative effect of -0.254 on experiential openness and the leadership of ideas, and has a negative effect of -0.216 on risk taking.There was no effect of the sub-dimensions of loneliness on change resistance.Moreover, on the individualistic behavior of physical loneliness, a -0.267 negative effect was observed.Emotional loneliness has no effect on the sub-dimensions of individual innovation.Finally, the total sense of loneliness was found to have a negative effect on total individual innovation.Conclusions:The study results clearly show that physical loneliness has a ne

Objective:The study aimed to determine the faculty of the health sciences students’knowledge and attitudes regarding the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic.Materials and Methods:This cross-sectional survey was completed with 317 undergraduate students of one health sciences faculty in Turkey.The data were collected between March 1,2020,and March 15,2020,by face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire created by the researchers.Number,percentage,mean,standard deviation,and Pearson Chi-square test were used to evaluate the data.Results:In this study,a high proportion of students answered questions about COVID-19 correctly.About 55.8%of the students took partial precautions against COVID-19 to protect themselves against COVID-19 and“frequent washing of hands”was the most common precaution.We determined that the main reasons for not taking any precautions against COVID-19 were“low number of cases in Turkey”and“getting irritated by the mask.”About 98.4%of the participants were entirely/partially following the news on COVID-19,with social media being the most commonly used medium.Female students took more protective measures than male students.The 1st-year students had more positive thoughts about vaccination compared to those in the other classes.Conclusions:Although the knowledge of the students about COVID-19 was good in the first wave of the pandemic,more than half of the students stated that they partially complied with the protective measures.

Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) about Refractive Error among Students Attending Faculty of Health Sciences at Lúrio University in Mozambique, 2020

Introduction: Refractive error is recognized as one of the most important causes of correctable visual impairment and affects people of all ages, socioeconomic levels, and ethnic groups. The World health Organization (WHO) estimated 285 million people globally were visually impaired, with 39 million blinds. The aim of this study is to access the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of health sciences students about the refractive error in Nampula, Mozambique. Material and Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study including health sciences students of Lúrio University in Nampula, applying a questionnaire to access their knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning the refractive error. The collected data were entered into SPSS version 22.0 for analysis. Frequency distribution and central tendency measures (mean, median) were used to summarize the descriptive part of the study. Results were described using tables and running text. Sample students were included after obtaining informed consent. Results: A total of 298 students participated in the study, 50.3% female, with average age of 24 ± 5.4 years. 69.8% had an eye exam and 54.7% believe they have good vision, 58.1% say that wearing glasses is the main method of correcting refractive errors. 92.3% refer to the Central Hospital as the best place to provide eye health services. The main reason for not purchasing the glasses was their cost (47.3%) and the alternative method for spectacle users was contact lenses (81.0%). The students’ attitudes were positive towards the use of glasses. Conclusion: Visual health education about the knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding refractive errors among students must be intensified to ensure good dissemination of information in the surrounding communities enrolled in the health promotion program “One Student, One Family” implemented by Lúrio University in Nampula.

Relationship between arterial stiffness and cognitive function in outpatients with dementia and mild cognitive impairment compared with community residents without dementia

BACKGROUND It is unclear whether the dementia patients with Alzheimer’s disease(AD)and vascular dementia(VaD)and mixed dementia(MIX,including AD and VaD)would have more developed arterial stiffness as compared with local residents without dementia.The aim of this study was to assess arterial stiffness and cognitive function in different types of dementia pa-tients[AD,VaD,MIX and mild cognitive impairment(MCI)]and community residents without dementia.METHODS This was a single-center,cross-sectional observational study.We studied a cohort of 600 elderly outpatients with a complaint of memory loss,who were divided into four groups(AD,VaD,MIX and MCI).In addition,they were compared with 55 age-matched local residents without dementia(Controls).We assessed arterial stiffness by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity(baPWV)and the global cognitive function by the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE).RESULTS The baPWV was higher in AD,VaD and MIX than in MCI and in Controls(P<0.05).The baPWV was higher in MCI than in Controls(P=0.021),while MMSE were compatible between them(P=0.119).The higher baPWV predicted the presence of AD,VaD,MIX and MCI with the odds ratio of 6.46,8.74,6.16 and 6.19,respectively.In contrast,there were no difference in baPWV among three different types of dementia(P=0.191).The linear relationship between baPWV and MMSE was observed in the elderly with MMSE≥23(R=0.452,P=0.033),while it was not in dementia patients(MMSE<23).CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that MCI and dementia patients have stiffer arteries as compared with age-matched local residents,although global cognitive function may be comparable between MCI and the local residents.

Sortilins in the blood-brain barrier:impact on barrier integrity

Sortilin was discovered in 1997 by Petersen and his colleagues.The single transmembrane receptor was isolated as a 95 kDa membrane glycoprotein by receptor-associated protein affinity chromatography and therefore initially named gp95.The cDNA library screening revealed sequence homology between the luminal segment of gp95/sortilin and the yeast vacuolar sorting protein 10 protein(Vps10p)domain(Petersen et al.,1997).The Vps10p domain was first identified in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae protein Vps10p that directs lysosomal enzymes from the Golgi to the vacuole(Marcusson et al.,1994).

Do PON1-Q192R and PON1-L55M polymorphisms modify the effects of hypoxic training on paraoxonase and arylesterase activity?

Background:Low levels of antioxidant paraoxonase 1(PON 1)enzyme activity,PON1-Q192R polymorphism(a glutamine(Q)to arginine(R)substitution at position 192),PON1-L55M polymorphism(a leucine(L)to methionine(M)substitution at position 55),and oxidized low-density lipoprotein(oxLDL)are risk factors for coronary heart disease.Aerobic exercise improves PON1 activity,but the effects of hypoxic exercise are yet unclear.The aim of this study was to determine the effects of hypoxic underwater rugby training on PON1 activity and oxLDL levels and the role of the mentioned polymorphisms.Methods:Serum PON1 and arylesterase activities(ARE),PON1,PON3,and oxLDL protein levels(by using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays)were determined in an athletic group(42 trained male underwater rugby players;age=21.7±4.2 years,mean±SD)and a control group(43 sedentary men;age=23.9±3.2 years).The polymorphisms were determined from genomic DNA samples.Results:PON1 activity(25.1%,p=0.052),PON3(p<0.001),and oxLDL(p<0.001)of the athletic group,including most genotype groups,were higher than those of the control group.In comparison to the controls,PON1 activity levels(p=0.005)of the PON1-Q192R homozygote QQ genotype group and PON1 activity levels(30%,p=0.116)of the PON1-L55M homozygote LL genotype group were higher,whereas ARE activity values of athletic R allele carrier(Rc=QR+RR)(p=0.005)and LL group(p=0.002)were lower than the control genotype groups related to their polymorphisms.Conclusion:Hypoxic training can cause(1)significant oxidative stress,including oxLDL,and an antioxidant response(increase in PON1 activity and PON3),(2)differences in the activity of PON1 and ARE,which are modified by PON1-Q192R and PON1-L55M polymorphisms,respectively,and(3)improvements in PON1 activity of QQ and LL groups.However,hypoxic training can cause a disadvantage of LL and Rc groups for ARE.

Feasibility of breaking up sitting time in mainstream and special schools with a cognitively challenging motor task

Background: Children spend 70% of the school day sitting in class. Classroom-based active breaks can benefit children's physical health, but if the breaks are cognitively demanding(i.e., combine physical exertion and mental engagement), they may also improve focus and cognitive functions. Teachers and students play a crucial role in the successful implementation of active breaks, and their perspectives are critical to the feasibility of these strategies. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of implementing a cognitively challenging motor task as an active break in mainstream and special primary schools.Methods: A total of 5 teachers in 2 mainstream schools and 7 teachers in 1 special school(attended by children with neurodevelopmental disorders) attended a 20-min training on how to implement a 4-min cognitively challenging active break, before conducting a feasibility trial(twice a day for 1 week). To understand individual perceptions, one-on-one semistructured interviews were conducted before and after the trial with teachers, and focus group interviews were conducted with typically developing children after the trial. Questions were based on a predefined framework for feasibility studies. All interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and analyzed in NVivo 11 using a framework approach. A total of 12 teachers(11 females; 7 between 20 and 34 years old) and 34 children(16 girls; 9.3 § 1.7 years, mean § SD) participated in the interviews.Results: In mainstream schools, teachers viewed the cognitively challenging motor task as appropriate and potentially beneficial for children's health and focus. Children reported enjoying the active breaks. Teachers in special schools viewed the task as complex and potentially frustrating for children. In both school types, children's disruptive behavior and lack of time were seen as the main potential barriers to implementation. In Europe,population ageing poses a challenge.Given accelerating population ageing in Europe,longterm care(LTC)is a growing concern.Unmet healthcare needs varied among European countries during the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,and greater attention should be paid to ensuring that the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations are met.Notably,developing common and comparable indicators is useful for monitoring the LTC and healthcare of older adults at the national and international levels,and understanding the reasons for the differences in indicators between European countries could shed light on how to improve the health of older adults.

Pes planus or flatfeet is a postural deformity which leads the entire sole of the foot to completely or near-completely touch the ground.Pes planus deformity occurs due to collapse of foot arches which can be congenital or pathological.The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of flatfoot condition among undergraduates at the faculty of Allied health Sciences(FAHS),General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University(KDU)and its correlation with age,gender and BMI.A cross sectional study was conducted among 533 participants(Male=131,Female=402).Interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect the demographic data.BMI was calculated by obtaining height and weight measurements.Arch index method was used to determine the foot type taken using the Modified Harris Mat.The data analysis was done using SPSS software version 23.P value of less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant.The study was done among people aged 19 to 26.The prevalence of flatfoot among this age group was 34.7%(n=185).Most of them are bilateral flat feet(73.5%),only 26.5%are unilateral flat feet.The proportion of patients with flat footedness was significantly higher in women(75%)than in men(25%).BMI in the overweight and obese categories(BMI>23)was statistically significant(phealth undergraduates was seemingly high requiring screening for early detection and appropriate referral for corrective measures.
