Globally,salinity is a brutal environmental constraint that poses a major threat to agriculture worldwide,causing nutrient imbalances and oxidative stress,leading to reduced crop yields and *** palm waste from the agro-industry is a major environmental problem,but its conversion to biochar for soil amendment could help alleviate the effects of salinity *** is a commonly grown horticultural crop that is sensitive to ***’s why the current experiment was conducted with the novel idea of exploring the potential use of biochar-based fertilizer derived from date palm waste as a mitigation strategy for salinity-related problems in *** study was conducted as a pot experiment in a growth chamber under controlled *** experiment con-sisted of four treatment groups:Control(no salinity stress);BM350E(biochar application only);NaCl(salinity stress without biochar application);BM350E+NaCl(combined biochar and salinity stress application).The soil was amended with biochar at a concentration of 3 g kg^(-1) soil and pepper seedlings were exposed to salinity stress with 150 mM NaCl for seven *** morphological,biochemical,and physiological responses were then *** use of BM350E biochar signiﬁcantly improved plant growth under saline conditions,increasing shoot fresh weight by 9.41%,root fresh weight by 15.32%,shoot length by 5.22%,and root length by 12.57%.It also increased chlorophyll a(Chl.a)by 8.28%,chlorophyll b(Chl.b)by 80.20%,and carotenoids(Car)by 52.43%while increasing antioxidant enzyme *** conclusion,BM350E biochar has the potential to effectively mitigate the negative effects of salinity on pepper growth.

Influence of sampling intensity on performance of two-phase forest inventory using airborne laser scanning

Background: Forest inventories have always been a primary information source concerning the forest ecosystem state. Various applied survey approaches arise from the numerous important factors during sampling scheme planning. Paramount aspects include the survey goal and scale, target population inherent variation and patterns,and available resources. The last factor commonly inhibits the goal, and compromises have to be made. Airborne laser scanning(ALS) has been intensively tested as a cost-effective option for forest inventories. Despite existing foundations, research has provided disparate results. environmental conditions are one of the factors greatly influencing inventory performance. Therefore, a need for site-related sampling optimization is well ***, as stands are the basic operational unit of managed forest holdings, few related studies have presented stand-level results. As such, herein, we tested the sampling intensity influence on the performance of the ALSenhanced stand-level ***: Distributions of possible errors were plotted by comparing ALS model estimates, with reference values derived from field surveys of 3300 sample plots and more than 300 control stands located in 5 forest districts. No improvement in results was observed due to the scanning density. The variance in obtained errors stabilized in the interval of 200–300 sample plots, maintaining the bias within +/-5% and the precision above 80%. The sample plot area affected scores mostly when transitioning from 100 to 200 m2. Only a slight gain was observed when bigger plots were ***: ALS-enhanced inventories effectively address the demand for comprehensive and detailed information on the structure of single stands over vast areas. Knowledge of the relation between the sampling intensity and accuracy of ALS estimates allows the determination of certain sampling intensity thresholds. This should be useful when matching the required sample size and accuracy

Primary forests are spatially diverse terrestrial ecosystems with unique characteristics,being naturally regenerative and heterogeneous,which supports the stability of their carbon storage through the accumulation of live and dead ***,little is known about the interactions between biomass stocks,tree genus diversity and structure across a temperate montane primary ***,we investigated the relationship between tree structure(variability in basal area and tree size),genus-level diversity(abundance,tree diversity)and biomass stocks in temperate primary mountain forests across Central and Eastern *** used inventory data from726 permanent sample plots from mixed beech and spruce across the Carpathian *** used nonlinear regression to analyse the spatial variability in forest biomass,structure,and genus-level diversity and how they interact with plot-level tree age,disturbances,temperature and *** found that the combined effects of genus and structural indices were important for addressing the variability in biomass across different spatial *** processes in disturbance regimes and uneven tree age support forest hete rogeneity and the accumulation of live and dead biomass through the natural regeneration,growth and decay of the forest *** complexities in basal area index,supporte d by genus-level abundance,positively influence total biomass stocks,which was modulated by tree age and *** forests showed higher tree density and basal area than mixed beech forests,though mixed beech still contributes significantly to biomass across *** heterogeneity was strongly influenced by complexities in forest composition(tree genus diversity,structure).We addressed the importance of primary forests as stable carbon stores,achieved through structure and *** such ecosystems is critical for ensuring the stability of the primary forest,carbon store and biodiversity into the future.

Assessing Tropical Deforestation and Biodiversity Loss in the Cross River Rainforest of Nigeria

The Cross River Rainforest of South Eastern Nigeria is one of Africa’s last remaining areas of pristine tropical high forest, extremely rich in a wide variety of flora and fauna species, and is among the twenty five biodiversity hotspots in the world. The forest has important biophysical properties which affect local, regional and global environmental quality. Using a combination of document research, GIS report, field observations, interviews and focus group discussions, the study reveals that the ecological integrity of this forest is being seriously threatened by a myriad of human activities, such as unsustainable agricultural practices, illegal logging, population explosion/expansion of human settlements, construction of highways, mining activities, and high unemployment/pressure on natural resources. All the above factors have combined to impact heavily on the depletion and extinction of valuable flora and fauna species in the region. Rigorous research-based innovative forestry and biodiversity policies and programmes, forest restoration initiatives, community-based forest management, and sustainable land use practices are recommended to save the Cross River Rainforest from total destruction.

The Effect of Tsunami in 2004 on Mangrove Forests, Nias Island, Indonesia

The earthquake and tsunami that devastated coastal area in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province and North Sumatra Province,especially Nias Island on December 26,2004,caused damage to most mangrove and coastal forests in the *** the 2004 tsunami,there is no report or publication about mangrove and coastal vegetation in Nias *** aims of this research were to describe the mangrove forests and coastal vegetation after tsunami disaster and to learn the ecological functions of mangrove forests and coastal vegetation on shore *** surveys,in eastern,northern and western coast of Nias Island within 10 days of the middle weeks in March 2005 and in southern coast of Nias Island within 6 days of the first 2 weeks in November 2006 after the 2004 tsunami,were *** research results showed that dense mangrove forests and coastal vegetation had been proven to be effective on protecting coastal area from the tsunami,while heavy damage occurred in the areas that have degraded mangrove and coastal ***,mangrove forests play an important role on shore protection,and this protection depends on the quality of the mangrove *** should be noted that degraded habitats or habitats with mangrove associate species instead of true mangrove species do not provide adequate protection.

Land suitability analysis of Moringa oleifera tree cultivation is important to enhance its product,as the demand forthis tree for medicinal values and food sources is increasing ***,this study aimed to assess suitableland for Moringa oleifera tree cultivation by using the integration of multi-criteria evaluation with geospatialtechnologies in the Dhidhessa catchment,western *** parameters,namely:slope,land use and landcover(LULC),soil texture,land surface temperature,and rainfall data,were used in this *** land suitabilityevaluation of Moringa oleifera is classified into three classes as highly suitable,moderately suitable,and *** results revealed that,about 344.4 km2(12.2%)of the area is categorized into highly suitable,and2343.7 km2(83%)is moderately suitable for Moringa tree,whereas,137.2 km2(4.9%)is categorized as notsuitable for Moringa oleifera tree ***,based on the finding of the study,we suggested that farmers andother stakeholders can cultivate Moringa oleifera trees in the Dhidhessa catchment.

Digitally Mapping the Hydro-Topographical Context for Community Planning: A Case Study for the Upper Choapa River Watershed in Chile

Urban and non-urban settlements in many regions are usually located on the lands bordering shores, rivers, canals or streams. However, housing complexes, landfills, and areas for agriculture and mining are often assigned to locations without sufficiently detailed hydrographic information about subsequent potential if not actual flow and flooding impacts. Yet, for sustainable community planning with emphasis on harmonizing social, economic, environmental and institutional aspects, such information is essential. This article demonstrates how this need can in part be accommodated by way of digital elevation and wet-area modelling and mapping using the upper component of the Choapa watershed in Chile as a case study. The terrain of this area has sharply incised valleys, with communities, fields and roads strung narrowly along the Choapa River and its tributaries. Above these locations along the Estero de Los Pelambres near the Chile-Argentina border are major mining and mineral refining activities. This article provides modelling and mapping details about the wet-to-moist area zonation along the upper Choapa River valleys, and addresses some of the mining-induced changes from 2000 to 2010.

Background:The characterization of surface and canopy fuel loadings in fire-prone pine ecosystems is critical for understanding fire behavior and anticipating the most harmful ecological effects of ***,the joint consideration of both overstory and understory strata in burn severity assessments is often *** aim of this work was to assess the role of total,overstory and understory pre-fire aboveground biomass(AGB),estimated by means of airborne Light Detection and Ranging(LiDAR)and Landsat data,as drivers of burn severity in a megafire occurred in a pine ecosystem dominated by Pinus pinaster *** the western Mediterranean ***:Total and overstory AGB were more accurately estimated(R^(2) equal to 0.72 and 0.68,respectively)from LiDAR and spectral data than understory AGB(R^(2)=0.26).Density and height percentile LiDAR metrics for several strata were found to be important predictors of *** severity responded markedly and non-linearly to total(R^(2)=0.60)and overstory(R ^(2)=0.53)AGB,whereas the relationship with understory AGB was weaker(R ^(2)=0.21).Nevertheless,the overstory plus understory AGB contribution led to the highest ability to predict burn severity(RMSE=122.46 in dNBR scale),instead of the joint consideration as total AGB(RMSE=158.41).Conclusions:This study novelty evaluated the potential of pre-fire AGB,as a vegetation biophysical property derived from LiDAR,spectral and field plot inventory data,for predicting burn severity,separating the contri-bution of the fuel loads in the understory and overstory strata in Pinus pinaster *** evidenced relationships between burn severity and pre-fire AGB distribution in Pinus pinaster stands would allow the implementation of threshold criteria to support decision making in fuel treatments designed to minimize crown fire hazard.
