This paper aims to analyze the synchronization phenomena in the system consisting of n identical metronomes on a hanging plate by using the describing function（DF） method, which deals with the driving torque as a discontinuous function of the angle and angular velocity of each metronome. Different from a previous study on the synchronization of the system with the first harmonic of the angle of each metronome having the same amplitude, this paper analyzes the synchronization without any assumption on the amplitudes of n metronomes. By investigating the relation between the motion of the hanging plate（common base） and n metronomes, this paper characterizes the synchronization phenomena by the following two types of synchronization:One is the inherent synchronization, whose frequency and amplitude of all synchronized metronomes are the same as those of a single metronome on a fixed base. The other is the non-inherent synchronization, which includes the in-phase synchronization with the same amplitude, and the synchronization with different amplitudes. The analytical results are validated by numerical simulation for three metronomes about the synchronization with the same or different amplitudes.

This paper addresses the synchronization problem of the non-uniform Kuramoto oscillators,i.e.,the Kuramoto oscillators with non-homogeneous damping coefficients and coupling *** a solution to this problem,we present a new necessary condition for the synchronization of the n oscillators,and show that it is tighter than an existing necessary condition proposed in D ¨orfler and Bullo（SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization,vol.50,no.3,2012）.For the oscillators of cases of n = 3,4,and 5,our numerical simulation investigations of 10000 systems for each case with the parameters generated randomly show that the conservativeness of the existing condition is reduced considerably by our newly presented condition.

Machining Robot with Vibrational Motion and 3D Printer-like Data Interface

In this paper, a vibration motion control is proposed and implemented on a foamed polystyrene machining robot to suppress the generation of undesirable cusp marks, and the basic performance of the controller is verified through machining experiments of foamed polystyrene. Then, a 3 dimensional （3D） printer-like data interface is proposed for the machining robot. The 3D data inter- face enables to control the machining robot directly using stereolithography （STL） data without conducting any computer-aided man- ufacturing （CAM） process. This is done by developing a robotic preprocessor that helps to remove the need for the conventional CAM process by directly converting the STL data into cutter location source data called cutter location （CL） or cutter location source （CLS） data. The STL is a file format proposed by 3D systems, and recently is supported by many computer aided design （CAD）/CAM soft- waxes. The STL is widely used for rapid prototyping with a 3D printer which is a typical additive manufacturing system. The STL deals with a triangular representation of a curved surface geometry. The developed 3D printer-like data interface allows to directly control the machining robot through a zigzag path, rectangular spiral path and circular spiral path generated according to the information included in STL data. The effectiveness and usefulness of the developed system are demonstrated through actual machining experiments.

A Method of Using Information Entropy of an Image as an Effective Feature for Com-puter-Aided Diagnostic Applications

computer-aided detection and diagnosis (CAD) systems are increasingly being used as an aid by clinicians for detection and interpretation of diseases. In general, a CAD system employs a classifier to detect or distinguish between abnormal and normal tissues on images. In the phase of classification, a set of image features and/or texture features extracted from the images are commonly used. In this article, we investigated the characteristic of the output entropy of an image and demonstrated the usefulness of the output entropy acting as a texture feature in CAD systems. In order to validate the effectiveness and superiority of the output-entropy-based texture feature, two well-known texture features, i.e., mean and standard deviation were used for comparison. The database used in this study comprised 50 CT images obtained from 10 patients with pulmonary nodules, and 50 CT images obtained from 5 normal subjects. We used a support vector machine for classification. A leave-one-out method was employed for training and classification. Three combinations of texture features, i.e., mean and entropy, standard deviation and entropy, and standard deviation and mean were used as the inputs to the classifier. Three different regions of interest (ROI) sizes, i.e., 11 × 11, 9 × 9 and 7 × 7 pixels from the database were selected for computation of the feature values. Our experimental results show that the combination of entropy and standard deviation is significantly better than both the combination of mean and entropy and that of standard deviation and mean in the case of the ROI size of 11 × 11 pixels (p < 0.05). These results suggest that information entropy of an image can be used as an effective feature for CAD applications.
