Analysis of shopping behavior characteristics in the Keihanshin metropolitan area in Japan based on a person trip survey

This study analyzed weekday shopping behavior from a home base to a destination using data from the 4th Keihanshin metropolitan area person trip survey.We first analyzed the relationships between occupation and transportation means,transportation means and travel time,and transportation means and duration of time at the destination.Results of a chi-square test,residual analysis,and correspondence analysis confirmed that employed persons tend to travel by cars while unemployed persons tend to travel by bus or walk.The relationship between travel time and duration of time at the destination was also revealed according to transportation means.Results of a cluster analysis then classified shopping behaviors to expose four patterns.Finally,multiple regression analyzed the degree to which certain variables were related to duration of time at the destination.Results confirmed a strong relationship between duration of time at the destination and travel time.The degree of this factor’s influence on other variables was also clarified.The value of these findings is that the relationship between travel time by means of transportation and the duration of time at the destination was clarified using statistical analysis.We then found a highly accurate equation that estimates the duration of time at a destination from the travel time.If the duration of time at a destination can be estimated,it may be possible to more accurately develop the structure of rest facilities,the number of parking lots,the degree of congestion,and so on,which can be associated with the customer’s usage behavior in a shopping site.This research in this paper contributes to the field of urban analysis and marketing by presenting a new effective method for person trip survey and analysis.

Loss-of-Function of a Ubiquitin-Related Modifier Promotes the Mobilization of the Active MITE mPing

Miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements （MITEs） are widespread in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes, where their copy numbers can attain several thousands. Little is known, however, about the genetic factor（s） affecting their transpositions. Here, we show that disruption of a gene encoding ubiquitin-like protein markedly enhances the transposition activity of a MITE roPing in intact rice plants without any exogenous stresses. We found that the transposition activity of roPing is far higher in the lines harboring a non-functional allele at the Rurml （Rice ubiquitin-related modifier-I） locus than in the wild-type line. Although the alteration of cytosine methylation pattern triggers the activation of transposable elements under exogenous stress conditions, the methylation degrees in the whole genome, the roPing-body region, and the roPing-flanking regions of the non-functional Rurml line were unchanged. This study provides experimental evidence for one of the models of genome shock theory that genetic accidents within cells enhance the transposition activities of transposable elements.

Systematic Relationship between Sr Content and the Lattice Constants in Sr Substituted Hydroxyapatite Thin Films

To increase the biocompatibility of hydroxyapatite (HA), Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, the Sr substitution of Ca into the HA structure was effected to yield Ca10-xSrx(PO4)6(OH)2(Sr-HA). For medical and dental applications, it is important that Sr-HA is prepared as a thin film so that the Sr fully substitutes the Ca sites in the HA structure and does not form segregated impurities consisting of Sr compounds. If the segregated Sr forms different amounts of different impurities, the dissolution of the Sr into the living body will not be reproducible across different samples. To confirm the Sr substitution into the Ca site in the HA structure, the systematic variation in the lattice constants of the Sr-HA with Sr content was evaluated as the first step. The a- and c-axis lengths were found to exhibit a linear relationship with the Sr content for six samples with different Sr contents, indicating that the prepared Sr-HA thin films likely possessed partial Sr substitution into the Ca sites of the HA structure. This result is an important first step in the accurate evaluation of the biological effects of Sr-HA thin films.

Direct Process to Prepare Crystallized Freestanding Membranes of Hydroxyapatite Using Sacrificial Layer of Barium-Compounds

Freestanding membrane (FSM) of hydroxyapatite (HA) is a thin sheet of pure HA without any supporting substrates. Our original preparation process of FSM of HA had three steps: The first was the deposition of HA layer on sacrificial layer of solvent-soluble materials, the second was separation of FSM of HA by means of dissolution of sacrificial layer, and the third was post-annealing to crystallize FSM of HA. To date, the post-annealing process was a serious bottleneck of productivity owing to its too long time. In this short report, we proposed a novel sacrificial layer, heatproof and water-soluble Ba-compound, which makes the direct deposition of crystallized HA possible due to its heatproof property because the problem on the original process was that the previous sacrificial layers have no heatproof property and HA layer should be deposited as amorphous. We can deposit the Ba-compound sacrificial layer only in 1 hour followed with the direct deposition of crystallized HA layer, substituting the 20 hours of post-annealing. The FSM of HA was separated successfully from the substrate by means of dissolution of Ba-compound with water. Our novel process can shrink the process time by 19 hours.

Synergistic Effects of a Night Temperature Shift and Methyl Jasmonate on the Production of Anthocyanin in Red Leaf Lettuce

The production of a secondary metabolite such as anthocyanin is coordinately regulated by plant intrinsic factors and influenced by multiple environmental factors. In red leaf lettuce, the red pigment component anthocyanin is important for the commercial value of the crop, but its synchronous regulation by multiple factors is not well understood. Here, we examined the synergistic effects of a night temperature shift and methyl jasmonate (MJ) on the production of anthocyanin in red leaf lettuce. Low or high night temperature treatment for 3 days just before harvesting induced the production of anthocyanin without affecting plant biomass. Temperature-dependent activation of anthocyanin accumulation was accelerated by treating with MJ. Night temperature shifts and MJ triggered oxidative stresses in leaves, as indicated by hydrogen peroxide accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Interestingly, these oxidative stresses were more evident in leaves simultaneously treated with both a high night temperature and MJ. The activity of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) was increased alongside the elevation of oxidative stress. Taken together, these results indicate that the combined treatment of a night temperature shift with MJ may accelerate anthocyanin production by increasing the levels of oxidative stress to the leaves of red leaf lettuce.

Plant secondary metabolites exhibit various horticultural traits.Simple and rapid analysis methods for evaluating these metabolites are in demand in breeding and consumer markets dealing with horticultural crops.We applied probe electrospray ionization(PESI)to evaluate secondary metabolite levels in horticultural crops.PESI does not require pre-treatment and separation of samples,which makes it suitable for high-throughput analysis.In this study,we targeted anthocyanins,one of the primary pigments in horticultural crops.Eighty-one anthocyanins were detected in approximately 3 minutes in the selected reaction-monitoring mode.Tandem mass spectrometry(MS/MS)could adequately distinguish between the fragments of anthocyanins and flavonols.Probe sampling,an intuitive method of sticking a probe directly to the sample,could detect anthocyanins qualitatively on a micro-area scale,such as achenes and receptacles in strawberry fruit.Our results suggest that PESI/MS/MS can be a powerful tool to characterize the profile of anthocyanins and compare their content among cultivars.

Elevated Root-Zone Temperature Modulates Growth and Quality of Hydroponically Grown Carrots

Air and soil temperatures strongly influence the growth and quality of crops. However, in root vegetables, such as carrot, few experiments aimed at regulating growth and quality by manipulating root-zone temperature have been reported. We investigated the effect of root-zone temperatures (20°C, 25°C, 29°C, and 33°C) on carrot growth and components using a hydroponic system. High root-zone temperatures for 14 days reduced shoot and rootgrowth and water content. In contrast, total phenolic compounds and soluble-solid content increased in tap roots under high-temperature treatment. Root oxygen consumption was upregulated after 7 days under high-temperature treatment. These results suggest that high root-zone temperatures induce drought-like stress responses that modulate carrot biomass and components. High root-zone temperature treatments administered to hydroponically grown crops may be a valuable tool for improving and increasing the quality and value of crops.

Effect of Root-Zone Temperature on Growth and Quality of Hydroponically Grown Red Leaf Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Red Wave)

Soil temperature influences crop growth and quality under field and greenhouse conditions;however, precise investigation using controlled cultivation systems is largely lacking. We investigated effects of root-zone temperatures on growth and components of hydroponically grown red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Red Wave) under a controlled cultivation system at 20°C. Compared with ambient root-zone temperature exposure, a 7-day low temperature exposure reduced leaf area, stem size, fresh weight, and water content of lettuce. However, root-zone heating treatments produced no significant changes in growth parameters compared with ambient conditions. Leaves under low root-zone temperature contained higher anthocyanin, phenols, sugar, and nitrate concentrations than leaves under other temperatures. Root oxygen consumption declined with low temperature root exposure, but not with root heating. Leaves of plants under low rootzone temperature showed hydrogen peroxide production, accompanied by lipid peroxidation. Therefore, low temperature root treatment is suggested to induce oxidative stress responses in leaves, activating antioxidative secondary metabolic pathways.

Extraction of yarn positional information from three-dimensional CT image of textile fabric using a yarn model for its structure analysis

This paper proposes a novel method for analyzing a textile fabric structure to extract positional information regarding each yarn using three-dimensional X-ray computed tomography(3D CT) image.Positional relationship among the yarns can be reconstructed using the extracted yarn positional information.In this paper,a sequence of points on the center line of each yarn of the sample is defined as the yarn positional information,since the sequence can be regarded as the representative position of the yarn.The sequence is extracted by tracing the yarn.The yarn is traced by estimating the yarn center and direction and correlating the yarn part of the 3D CT image with a 3D yarn model,which is moved along the estimated yarn direction.The trajectory of the center of the yarn model corresponds to the positional information of the yarn.The application of the proposed method is shown by experimentally applying the proposed method to a 3D CT image of a double-layered woven fabric.Furthermore,the experimental results for a plain knitted fabric show that this method can be applied to even knitted fabrics.
