Assessment of sleep disturbances with the athlete sleep screening questionnaire in Chinese athletes

This study investigated the factors that are associated with sleep disturbances among Chinese *** quality and associated factors were assessed by the Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire(ASSQ,n?394,aged 18–32 years,47.6%female).Sleep difficulty score(SDS)and level of sleep problem(none,mild,moderate,or severe)were used to classify participants'sleep *** variables were analyzed by Chi-square or fisher's exact *** ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to explore factors with poor sleep(SDS8).Approximately 14.2%of participants had moderate to severe sleep problem(SDS8).Fifty-nine percent of the athletes reported sleep disturbance during travel,while 43.3%experienced daytime dysfunction when travelling for *** significant difference was found in the SDS category between gender,sports level and *** with evening chronotype were more likely to report worse sleep than athletes with morning and intermediate chronotype(OR,2.25;95%CI,1.44–3.52;p<0.001).For each additional year of age,there was an increase of odds ratio for poor sleep quality(OR,1.15;95%CI,1.04–1.26;p?0.004),while each additional year of training reduced the odds ratio(OR,0.95;95%CI,0.91–0.99;p?0.044).To improve sleep health in athletes,chronotype,travel-related issues,age and years of training should be taken into consideration.

Background: The excessive use of medicines and generally self-medication is considered as one of the major health and socio-economic problems in different countries. There is increasing evidence that self-medications among pregnant women are common in many developing countries. Despite the adverse impact on pregnancy, there are few programs available for their control. The Northwest region of Cameroon has been affected by socio-political crisis since 2016, which has slowed down economic activities and have grievous effects on the economy. It was therefore necessary to evaluate the prevalence of auto-medication amongst pregnant women. Aim: The aim of this study is to ascertain the knowledge, prevalence and practice of auto medication among pregnant women in Cameroon especially in the North West Region. Method: A community based cross-sectional study was conducted among 500 pregnant women, aged between 15 - 45 years in the Bamenda Health District between January to October 2019. A structured questionnaire based interview was used to collect data from each study subject. Then, data were categorized and analyzed using SPSS version 20 software. Results: The prevalence of auto-medication (allopathic and herbal medicines) in this study was 337 (67.4%) and was predominant during the first trimester 246 (72.86%) of pregnancy. 98 (29.09%) previous experience, 70 (20.77%) that they did not have money for consultation, 70 (20.77%) non-severity of ailments and 75 (22.25%) high cost of medication in hospital/pharmacy were the most common reason pregnant women auto medicate. 96 (28.48%) antiemetic, 72 (21.36%) analgesics and 58 (17.21%) antacids were the most frequent drugs used for auto-medication and the main symptoms for which pregnant women practice auto-medication were: 72 (21.36%) fever/headache, 63 (18.69%) constipation and 58 (17.21%) nausea/vomiting. 116 (34.42%) friends/family/neighbors were the main sou

Holistic Approach to Functional Constipation: Perspective of Traditional Persian medicine

Traditional Persian medicine(TPM) proposes a different viewpoint to the chronic diseases. Diagnosis and implemented treatment are based on individual differences among patients. Constipation or Ea’teghal-e-batn is a condition in which the patient develops difficult or painful defecation. Based on TPM concepts, the first digestion step starts from halq(oral cavity), and ends via defecation from the maq’ad(anus). Avicenna believed that four faculties, ha’zemeh(digestive), ja’zebeh(absorptive), ma’sekeh(retentive) and da’fe’eh(propulsive), are involved in the process of digestion and absorption of the ingested food and expelling the waste materials. The bowel movement and appearance of the stool is a measure for evaluating the gastrointestinal healthy function. Defecation should be with no pain and fecal material should have no burning and acuity. Low food intake or foods with dry temperament, dryness of gastrointestinal tract, diaphoresis and heavy exercise as well as intestine sensory loss were discussed as main causes of constipation. Management of constipation in TPM includes dietary schemes, oil massages and subsequently simple herbal medicines. According to TPM theories, the first step in treating a disease is the elimination of disease causes(asbabe-maraz) and also providing the causes of health(asbab-e-sehhat). Health care providers should know the proper condition which the herbal medicines should be administered in and be able to guide the patients about the benefits and hazards of herbal remedies, commonly used in their living origin.

Revisiting the Major Mental Disorders and Updating the Nosological Schema: A Synthesis

Recently, conciliating findings from molecular genetics, evolutionary biology, along with empirical clinical evidence regarding the major mental disorders (MMDs) namely bipolar affective disorder (BPAD), schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), the anxieties with depression, autism and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) all point to a common neural-developmental origin. Genetic loci associated with schizophrenia do not directly lead to the disorder;instead, they code for the expression of lopsided, temperamental, variants in individuals that originate mainly from one part of our human nature which applies also, to the rest of the MMDs. These individuals contribute to the flexibility, robustness, and creative input of our species, concomitantly, they incur vulnerability to the development of a MMD as an evolutionary trade off. MMDs initially, are expressed as periodic epiphenomena on the underlying temperamental extreme variants of brain function. Their expressions tend to become permanent. Underlying, aberrant traits remain unaltered. Their clinical expressions are characterized by “either-or”, antithetical substitutes, in addition to co-occurring psychosis. The latter is a common occurrence to other assaults on brain function. Characteristic, “ether-or” symptoms are the result of a disturbed, overall, coordinating property of brain function, normally responsive to the smooth, synchronizing expression of all higher mental faculties. Clinical findings point to the need of modifying the current schema in order to better reflect their collective significance in order to help guide research to a new, more promising direction in elucidating their triggers, development, and mechanisms whereby opening a new horizon for therapy and treatment.

Background: The hyperproliferative keratinocytic lesions encompass a wide ran ge of non-tumorigenic, pretumorigenic, and tumorigenic conditions. The aim of this work was to examine the expression patterns of apoptosis-linked molecules (bcl-2 and p53) in these lesions. Methods: Immunoperoxidase staining methods were applied to analyze p53 and bcl- 2 protein expression in a total of 66 case s, including 12 squamous cell carcinomas (both in situ and invasive SCC), 11 act inic keratoses(AK), 13 psoriasis vulgaris(PV), eight verruca vulgaris(VV), six c hronic dermatitis(CD), five seborrheic keratosis(SK), four lichen planus(LP),thr ee epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EDV), two condyloma acuminata(CA),two lichen simplex chronicus (LSC), and 10 specimens from normal skin. Results: As compare d to normal skin (0.70 ± 0.26), the bcl- 2 average weighted scores in the non -tumorigenic (0.76 ± 0.16), pretumorigenic (1.45 ± 0.28), and tumorigenic lesions (2.83 ± 0.50 and 2.92 ± 0.50 for in situ and invasive SCC, respectiv ely) showed significant up-regulation (P = 0.001). In the non-tumorigenic lesions, the bcl- 2 expression values decreased in the following order: SK > EDV > CD > LP > CA > PV > VV (1.40 ± 0. 24 > 1.33 ± 0.67 > 0.83 ± 0.40 > 0.67 ± 0.21 > 0.50 ± 0.20 > 0.46 ± 0. 22 > 0.13 ± 0.01, respectively). As compared to normal skin (1.10 ± 0.23), t he p53 average weighted scores in the non-tumorigenic (1.86 ± 0.18), pretumo rigenic (3.64 ± 0.53), and tumorigenic lesions (5.00 ± 1.00 and 5.08 ± 0.8 6 for in situ and invasive SCC, respectively) showed significant up-regulation (P = 0.021). In the non-tumorigenic lesions, p53 average weighted scores decr eased in the following order: SK > PV > CA > LP > CD > VV > EDV (3.20 ± 0.49 > 2.38 ± 0.27 > 2.0 ± 0.0 > 1.83 ± 0.48 > 1.0 ± 0.37 > 1.0 ± 0.33 > 1.0 ± 0.0, respectively). Ten years ago,three teams experimentally demonstrated the first spasers,or plasmonic nanolasers,after the spaser concept was first proposed theoretically in *** overview of the significant progress achieved over the last 10 years is presented here,together with the original context of and motivations for this *** a general introduction,we first summarize the fundamental properties of spasers and discuss the major motivations that led to the first demonstrations of spasers and *** is followed by an overview of crucial technological progress,including lasing threshold reduction,dynamic modulation,room-temperature operation,electrical injection,the control and improvement of spasers,the array operation of spasers,and selected applications of single-particle *** prospects are presented in relation to several directions of development,including further miniaturization,the relationship with Bose-Einstein condensation,novel spaser-based interconnects,and other features of spasers and plasmonic lasers that have yet to be realized or challenges that are still to be overcome.

Large animal models of cardiac ischemia-reperfusion are critical for evaluation of the efficacy of cardioprotective interventions prior to clinical ***,current cardioprotective strategies/interventions formulated in preclinical cardiovascular research are often limited to small animal models,which are not transferable or reproducible in large animal models due to different factors such as:(i)complex and varied features of human ischemic cardiac disease(ICD),which are challenging to mimic in animal models,(ii)significant differences in surgical techniques applied,and(iii)differences in cardiovascular anatomy and physiology between small versus large *** article highlights the advantages and disadvantages of different large animal models of preclinical cardiac ischemic reperfusion injury(IRI),as well as the different methods used to induce and assess IRI,and the obstacles faced in using large animals for translational research in the settings of cardiac IR.

Rapid identification of chemical profile in Gandou decoction by UPLCQ-TOF-MSE coupled with novel informatics UNIFI platform

Gandou decoction(GDD),a well-known traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)formula,has been widely used for decades to treat Wilson's disease(WD)in China due to its remarkable clinical ***,the chemical constituents of GDD still remain unclear because of their *** this work,a reliable and sensitive strategy based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MSE)and UNIFI informatics platform was applied to investigate the chemical components in *** total,96 compounds including anthraquinones,alkaloids,protostane triterpenoids,flavonoids,triterpenoid saponins,tannins,curcuminoids,etc,were identified or tentatively characterized from GDD by comparing their retention time,accurate mass within 5 ppm error and MSE fragmentation *** them,eleven compounds were confirmed unambiguously with reference *** compounds in different chemical structure types were analyzed in fragmentation patterns and characteristic ***,to better understand the chemical contribution of individual herbs to the whole decoction,the corresponding each herb in GDD was also *** study developed a rapid method for characterizing the chemical constituents in GDD,which could not only be used for chemical standardization and quality control,but also be helpful for further research of GDD in vivo.

This study evaluates the pozzolanicity of Nyiragongo volcano lava flows in Congo by an indirect method using mortars with different rock powder proportions. The clinker used is a locally produced alite clinker, whose chemical and mineralogical composition was determined by XRF, Bogue and Taylor formulas. The lava flows were collected from the 2002, 2010 and 2021 eruption sites, and were characterized by XRF, CIPW normative mineralogy and geomechanical tests. The results show that Nyiragongo rocks are ultrabasic, silica- and alkali-rich, and contain minerals like nepheline, wollastonite and leucite. They satisfy the natural pozzolan criterion, and have pozzolanic activity indices above 70%. These rocks also have high RC and LA resistances, ranging from 190 MPa to 45 MPa, and from 18% to 32.6%, respectively. The rock powder addition in the mortars reduces mechanical resistances and increases setting times, except for a 5% replacement rate, which speeds up hardening. Nyiragongo lava can be used as a pozzolanic addition to produce a CEM II/B-P 32.5 cement.
