Background: In Togo, the HIV/AIDS epidemic is characterized by the circulation of the 2 subtypes of HIV. Thus, patients infected with HIV-2 are diagnosed and monitored in the care centers. Objective: To document the trend of HIV-2 prevalence over a decade of activities of the National Reference Center for HIV tests and screening (CNR-VIH). Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out from the screening data archived from January 2005 to december 2014 at the CNR-VIH, a laboratory located in the Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital (CHU SO) Lome. The sampling consisted of adults and children outpatients or those who were hospitalized in CHU SO, subjects presenting for voluntary testing, pregnant women and patients or samples referred for HIV confirmation. All samples were tested for HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections by combining ELISA and rapid diagnostic tests. Result: During the decade, 34,077 subjects were screened for HIV infection. The overall prevalence of HIV infection was 20.70% (7055/34077). In 10 years, the prevalence of HIV infection in CNR-VIH decreased significantly from 35.40% CI95% [34.50% - 36.20%] in 2005 to 14.20% CI95% [13.60% - 14.70%] in 2014 (p = 0.03). The prevalence of HIV-1, HIV-2 and dual HIV1&HIV-2 was respectively 20.40%, 0.23% and 0.07%, with annual prevalence of HIV-2 between 0.07% and 0.39%. The differences between the HIV-2 prevalence over the decade were not statistically significant (p > 0.15). A 4-year-old child from mother-to-child HIV-2 transmission was diagnosed. Sixty-five percent of adult patients were over 40 years of age with an average age of 43.5 ± 11.3 years. Conclusion: Data from the National Reference Center for HIV Tests in Togo over the last ten years confirm the existence of a weak epidemic of HIV- 2 infection with a tendency towards stability.

The aim of this study was to investigate the antihyperglycemic and antioxidant effects of Po （Portulaca oleracea） lyophilised aqueous extract in diabetic male Wistar rats. Diabetes was induced intraperitonially by a single injection of STZ （streptozotocin）（60 mg/kg bw （body weight））. Twenty diabetic rats, weighing 263 ± 5 g, were divided into two groups fed a casein diet supplemented or not with Po extract （1 g/kg bw）, for four weeks. Control group （n = 6） received 0.23-0.25 mL of citrate buffer and was fed a standard diet during the experiment. The study was carried out at Oran University, Algeria and the entire experiments lasted from September 2011 to July 2012. Blood was obtained from the abdominal aorta of rats after fasting overnight and standard methods were used for the extraction of spices, determination of glycemia, insulinemia, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes activities. Portulaca oleracea treated compared to untreated rats, glycemia and HbAIc values were respectively 2.8- and 1.7-fold lower. TBARS （thiobarbituric acid reactive substances） concentrations were reduced in RBC （red blood cells）（-54%） and plasma （-65%）. Moreover, in liver and kidney, TBARS values were respectively 1.8- and 2-fold lower. SOD （superoxide dismutase） and GSH-Px （glutathione peroxidase） activities were increased respectively by ＋38% and ＋85%, in liver. GSSG-Red （glutathione reductase） activity was 1.9-fold higher in kidney, while CAT （catalase） was improved in kidney （＋48%）. In RBCs, SOD, GSH-Px, GSSH-Red and CAT activities were increased by 31%, 42%, 56% and ＋50%, respectively. These data have cast a new light on the actions of Portulaca oleracea and its antioxidant potential benefits in preventing diabetes and its complications.

We compared resistance to decay, mold fungi, termites and insect larvae of particleboards incorporated with the raw boron minerals ulexite and colemanite to that of particleboards impregnated with the commercial boron preservative zinc borate, or boric acid plus a borax mixture. We also quantified water absorption, thickness swell and boron release of particleboards. Ulexite had the best decay resistance, and colemanite had the best termite resistance. However, ulexite and colemanite were not as effective as zinc borate or the boric acid/borax mixture in preventing mold growth. In general, the boric acid/borax mixture combination was more effective against Anobium larvae than the other treatments. Less boron was released by specimens containing zinc borate and colemanite than by those containing ulexite or the boric acid/borax mixture. In general, water absorption and thickness swell were similar among the different treatments, but both were slightly higher in the ulexite-incorporated specimens. Further mechanical tests will be needed to evaluate the particle- board properties and thereby the compatibility of these boron minerals with various manufacturing processes.

The structure and electronic properties of a series of biologically active dithiolethiones （1） have been calculated using semi-empirical. Multi-linear regression analysis suggests that there is a reasonable correlation between the experimental activity of the derivatives against chelation activity and calculated properties such as the HOMO energies, molar refractivity, dipole moments and experimental partition coefficient. From the derived QSAR equations the 3-Methylthio-4p-Tolyle-1,2-Dithiolylium accompanying ion （CH3SO4） and 4-para-tolyl-1,2-dithiole-3-thione （2b and 2） are predicted to show the highest activity against chelation activity, while 3-Methylthio-5p-methoxy phenyl-1,2-Dithiolylium accompanying ion （I-）（3a） is predicted to be the least active in line with the experimental results.

Introduction: In malaria-endemic areas, acute renal failure (ARF) is one of the most serious complications, it occurs in 40% of severe forms of malaria in adults and is linked to 75% of deaths, especially when extra-renal cleaning is not available. In children, studies of ARF during malaria are limited. We have no published studies on this topic in Niger. The main objective of our study is to evaluate the prognosis of ARF during severe malaria in children. Patients and Method: This is a one-year prospective study (January 1, 2016 to december 31, 2016) conducted in the resuscitation unit of the pediatric department of the National lamordé Hospital of Niamey (Niger). We included in the study children aged 0 to 15 years hospitalized for severe malaria with impaired renal function. Patients who had chronic renal failure or who had acute renal failure with a thick negative drop were excluded from the study. Acute renal failure is defined according to Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria basing on creatinine clearance. Results: The incidence of ARF was 12.60%. The mean age of the patients was 4.25 ± 1.3 years [8 months - 15 years]. The mean hemoglobin level was 8.2 ± 2.7 g/dl. In 54.02% of cases, the hemoglobin level is ≤5 g/dl. Mean serum creatinine was 543.7 ± 69.5 μmol/l [107 - 2500 μmol/l] and mean azotemia was 27.5 ± 3.5 mmol/l. Severe anemia (54.02%) were more related to the occurrence of ARF(with p = 0.014). According to the RIFLE classification, 55 patients (63.22%) were in the Risk stage, 18 patients (20.69%) were in the injury stage and 14 patients (16.09%) in the failure stage. All patients were placed on injectable Artesunate. The average length of hospital stay was 8.6 ± 4.5 days [5 to 22 days]. Dialysis was reported in 15/87 (17.24%). For technical and financial reasons only 8 patients were hemodialysed. Hepatitis C virus(HCV)is still one of the main causes of liver disease *** disorders,including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD),induced by HCV have been shown to accelerate the progression of fibrosis to cirrhosis and to increase the risk of hepatocellular *** optimal peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha(PPARGC1A)activity is crucial to prevent NAFLD *** present study aims to investigate the associations between two common PPARGC1A polymorphisms(rs8192678 and rs12640088)and the outcomes of HCV infection in a North African context.A series of 592 consecutive Moroccan subjects,including 292 patients with chronic hepatitis C(CHC),100 resolvers and 200 healthy controls were genotyped using a TaqMan allelic discrimination ***1A variations at rs8192678 and rs12640088 were not associated with spontaneous clearance of HCV infection(adjusted ORs=0.76 and 0.79 respectively,P[0.05,for both).Furthermore,multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that both SNPs were not associated with fibrosis progression(OR=0.71;95%CI 0.20–2.49;P=0.739;OR=1.28;95%CI 0.25–6.54;P=0.512,respectively).We conclude that,in the genetic context of South Mediterranean patients,rs8192678 and rs12640088 polymorphisms of PPARGC1 A are neither associated with spontaneous clearance nor with disease progression in individuals infected with HCV.
