Analytical and technological aspects of amylose inclusion complexes for potential applications in functional foods

The linear component of starch,amylose,has the ability to interact with hydrophobic molecules forming inclusion complexes(ICs).These structures have gained a particular interest for potential food applications,either as dietary fiber or as delivery systems of bioactive *** the second case,the complexation of sensitive molecules is directed to protect them from processing,storage and stomach conditions and to guarantee a sustained release in the gastrointestinal *** present review covers the analytical and technological aspects of inclusion complexes,with focus on their potential application in the development of functional *** was addressed by first explaining the methodologies used for the analytical assessment of their structural,thermal,and functional properties,followed by the study of the functionality of ICs as carrier agents of different bioactive compounds and food ingredients,including alpha-lipoic acid,α-linolenic and linoleic fatty acids,conjugated linoleic acid,ascorbyl palmitate,phenolic compounds,and *** also covers the application of ICs in food products and the analysis of the potential industrial scalability of the formation *** analytical methodologies allowed a complete characterization of the *** structures have shown suitable functional properties as delivery systems of the bioactive compounds and flavors covered in this *** incorporation of ICs in food has led to the development of products with improved nutritional and/or functional *** successful formation of complexes using methods suitable for an industrial scale represents promising preliminary results to achieve the scalability of the ICs production in the near future.

Starting from the importance of preserving our information and protecting our devices against attacks on their vulnerabilities, this article aims to establish the level of knowledge in computer security and problem-solving of students at a university in northwest Mexico. This research has a quantitative approach where the European Framework of Digital Competencies for Citizenship was used as a reference to identify and establish the level of the competencies that were evaluated. The IKANOS Test was used as a data collection tool. The results show that students know the importance of keeping their devices safe and how valuable the information found on them is. On the other hand, the results also show a considerable percentage of students who do not have the knowledge and are at a basic level of knowledge to solve technical problems with their devices.

Statistical evaluation of fluoride contamination in groundwater resources of Santiago del Estero Province, Argentina

This study investigates the suitability of statistical techniques for evaluating the fluoride content and the groundwater quality from Robles department(RD)and Banda department(BD)in Santiago del Estero(Argentina).For the original statistical study,evaluation of nine parameters(fluoride,pH,conductivity,atmospheric and water temperature,total dissolved solids,chloride,hardness,and alkalinity)of 110 collected underground water samples from 23 dispersed rural areas was *** samples were obtained by sampling taken from wells at different *** levels were determined by a standard colorimetric method in two seasonal periods,the dry(from April to September)and rainy(from October to March)*** analytical results obtained for physicochemical parameters such as pH,total dissolved solids(TDS),and temperature does not reveal any notable difference between the rainy and dry seasons *** both seasons,the atmospheric temperature average was 22℃.With respect to fluoride content,approximately 50%of the analysed groundwater samples exceeded the limit established by current legislation(1.0 mg/L),obtaining concentration levels in the range of 0.01-2.80 mg/*** study demonstrates the usefulness of the univariate statistical method(quartiles calculation,interquartile range IQR),multivariate principal component analysis(PCA),and cluster analysis to establish a better understanding of the state of the contamination of the waters in the region studied.

The improvement of microbial characterization has increased the comprehension of microbial population and their ability in the microbiological metal dissolution. Bioleaching processes have been expanded to use microorganisms for the recovery of metals from ores and wastes. This study introduces Palca mine tailings pond in Peru which turned into acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is a source of microbial communities whose microorganisms may support the aqueous extractive metallurgy for metal recovery. Four samples of AMD were collected from different locations and the elemental characterization showed concentrations of metals, such as Cu, Zn, Al, Mn, and Fe. The pH of the samples showed variation between 1.9 - 6.8. Twenty-one microorganisms were isolated and selected according the cell morphology. 16s rRNA gene sequences identified five species of which three belong to the bacterial kingdom and two to the Fungi kingdom. Two of the bacterial species were ferrous ion oxidizing bacteria, identified as Acidithiobacillus ferriphilus and Acidithiobacillus ferridurans;and the other one a ferric ion reducing bacteria identified as Acidiphilium acidophilum. The fungi species identified were Rhodotorula sinensis and Exophiala xenobiotica, a filamentous fungus isolated for the first time from an AMD.

Objective: Pharmacopoeias regulate the manufacture of potentised pharmaceutical preparations used in different branches of complementary and integrative medicine. The physicochemical properties and biological activity of these preparations are often investigated in preclinical research, yet no guidelines for experimental research currently exist in this area. The present PrePoP guidelines aim to provide recommendations to promote high-quality, statistically sound, and reproducible preclinical research on potentised ***: Input was gathered from researchers nominated by the relevant scientific societies using a simplified delphi consensus approach covering the most relevant aspects of basic research methodology in the field including appropriate controls, sample preparation and handling, and statistics. After three rounds of feedback, a consensus was finally reached on the most important aspects and considerations for conducting high-quality research on potentised ***: We present a series of recommendations on a range of topics including experimental controls,system stability, blinding and randomisation, environmental influences, and procedures for the preparation of potentised samples and controls, and we address some specific challenges of this research ***: This expert consensus process resulted in a robust set of methodological guidelines for research on potentised preparations and provides a valuable framework that will inform and improve the quality of subsequent research in this emerging field.

Lower marine productivity increases agonistic interactions between sea lions and fur seals in Northern Pacific Patagonia

Interspecific interactions are key drivers of individual and population-level fitness in a wide range of ***,in marine ecosystems,it is relatively unknown which biotic and abiotic factors impact behavioral interactions between competing *** assessed the impact of weather,marine productivity,and population structure on the behavioral agonistic interactions between South American fur seals(SAFSs),Arctocephalus australis,and South American sea lions(SASLs),Otaria byronia,in a breeding colony of *** hypothesized that agonistic interactions between SAFSs and SASLs respond to biotic and abiotic factors such as SAFS population structure,marine productivity,and *** found that SASL and SAFS interactions almost always resulted in negative impacts on the social structure or reproductive success of the SAFS *** adult males initiated stampedes of SAFS and/or abducted and predated SAFS *** SAFS males abundance and severe weather events were negatively correlated with agonistic interactions between ***,proxies for lower marine productivity such as higher sea surface temperature and lower catches of demerso-pelagic fish were the most important predictors of more frequent agonistic interactions between SAFS and *** the current scenario of decline in marine biomass due to global climate change and overfishing,agonistic interactions between competing marine predators could increase and exacerbate the negative impacts of environmental change in these species.

Processing of Snack of Goat Chub Chili(Capsicum annuum L.)with Formulations of Tomato and Tomato-Marjoram

The cultivation of goat chili has potentially increased in Chile, due to different varieties of gourmet products made with it;for this reason, new industrial projects are sought to the growing volume to adapt them to the new trends in consumption habits, mainly focused on achieving an attractive meal, a fast preparation and consumption, while nutrients are provided to offer some benefits for human health. The “snacks” products that include the use of fruit satisfactorily respond to these requirements, in addition to providing marketing alternatives to the surplus of fruit exports. For this reason, the present test, consisting of the processing of snacks based on goat chub chili with the addition of tomato and marjoram, was carried out to increase the palatability and the sensorial quality of the final product. The following formulations were used: only chili (T1);chili and tomato (T2);chili, tomato and marjoram (T3). The latter one was characterized by a good flavor and aroma. A large amount of the fruit water content had been removed by drying it with forced hot air. A product without chemical preserves was obtained, with physical and chemical parameters similar to those required by similar foods existing on the market today. In sensorial terms, the formulation to which marjoram was added showed good sensorial and acceptability attributes, highlighting them from the rest of the treatments. The snack color was maintained after the dehydration process, according to panelists.

Drought and Spatiotemporal Variability of Forest Fires Across Mexico

Understanding the spatiotemporal links between drought and forest fire occurrence is crucial for improving decision-making in fire management under current and future climatic conditions. We quantified forest fire activity in Mexico using georeferenced fire records for the period of 2005–2015 and examined its spatial and temporal relationships with a multiscalar drought index, the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index(SPEI). A total of 47975 fire counts were recorded in the 11-year long study period, with the peak in fire frequency occurring in 2011. We identified four fire clusters, i.e., regions where there is a high density of fire records in Mexico using the Getis-Ord G spatial statistic. Then, we examined fire frequency data in the clustered regions and assessed how fire activity related to the SPEI for the entire study period and also for the year 2011. Associations between the SPEI and fire frequency varied across Mexico and fire-SPEI relationships also varied across the months of major fire occurrence and related SPEI temporal scales. In particular, in the two fire clusters located in northern Mexico(Chihuahua, northern Baja California), drier conditions over the previous 5 months triggered fire occurrence. In contrast, we did not observe a significant relationship between drought severity and fire frequency in the central Mexico cluster, which exhibited the highest fire frequency. We also found moderate fire-drought associations in the cluster situated in the tropical southern Chiapas where agriculture activities are the main causes of forest fire occurrence. These results are useful for improving our understanding of the spatiotemporal patterns of fire occurrence as related to drought severity in megadiverse countries hosting many forest types as Mexico.

Morphological responses of three persistent native anuran species after forest conversion into monoculture pine plantations:tolerance or prosperity?

Species loss by habitat replacement operating as an ecological filter is a well-known consequence of modern human activities. In contrast, the ecological and evolutionary response of species overcoming those filters in convertedhabitats has not been thoroughly explored. Species that persist are subject to novel and potentially stressful conditions that may induce certain morphological changes. We evaluated changes in the functional morphology of threeanuran species persisting after the conversion of areas of the Atlantic Forest into pine plantations. We specificallyevaluated differences in body size and body condition indices, head width, and hind legs’ length between adultindividuals from both habitats and sexes. Habitat conversion and sexual dimorphism affected the morphology ofthe three anurans, with varying effects upon species and traits. Regarding the effect of habitat conversion, Elachistocleis bicolor increased body condition in plantations with no changes in the other traits, Physalaemus cuvierishowed only a marginal increment in residual body mass in plantations, and Odontophrynus americanus exhibiteda substantial increment in body size while maintaining its body condition in plantations. Remarkably, none of theresults suggested these persistent anurans were stressed by forest conversion. This study shows that habitat conversion may induce intraspecific morphological changes in ecologically relevant traits of persistent species, andthat disturbed areas do not necessarily imply stressful, low quality habitats affecting all persistent native speciesnegatively.
