In his sole surviving treatise, the Commentary to the Phaenomena of Eudoxus and Aratus, the great astronomer Hipparchus of Bithynia refers four times to “ancient”(αρχαιοι) authors, which he leaves unnamed.1 Eudoxus and Aratus are not included in this reference. The quotations create the impression of a diversity of astronomical authors subsumed by Hipparchus under the category of the “Ancients,” but this plurality could go back to a single source that was sometimes referred to in this way in antiquity, such as the astral compendium attributed to Nechepsos and Petosiris. One might, of course, hypothesize that Hipparchus devoted part of his labours to extensive research of the history of astronomy.

This paper presents the step-by-step genetic algorithm based on artificial intelligence guidance and builds a long-term daily optimized operating model for the Three Gorges-Gezhouba Hydropower Complex with single generating set as the based operating unit. Actual operating data from 2004 to 2006 are used to verify the model, and results show that the simulation accuracy determined by measuring the total amount of cascade power generation reaches 99.66%. Statistic hydrological data of normal years and actual data of three years of 2004―2006 are respectively used to perform an optimized prediction of the power generation process and benefits in future when the water stored in the TGP Reservoir reaches 175 m level and power generation benefits under different operation modes, such as delayed subsiding water level, advance water storage, and adopting of different flood-limited water levels, are forecasted. In the case of years with normal inflows, the total amount of cascade power generation running on current specifications reaches 107500 GWh per year. If the commencement of water storage after the flood season is moved forward by 20 days, the amount of power generation can be increased by 3400 GWh per year. If the limited water level in the flood season is raised by three to five meters, the amount of power generation can be increased by 1600 to 3200 GWh per year. If the commencement of water storage is moved forward while the maximum water level allowed in the flood season is raised, the amount of power generation can be increased by 6400 GWh per year.

Mountain torrents comprise zones of sediment erosion, transport and accumulation and constitute one of the most common geomorphological units of the Alpine region. During the second half of the 19th century the dynamics of these torrent basins were modified: the dichotomy created by new approaches of environmental engineering. The rise of ’Wildbachverbauung’（torrent engineering） led to the concept of storing as much sediment as possible in prior zones of erosion and transport. After less than one century, the former geornorphological setting was replaced by engineered torrent systems. In contrast to natural systems a zone of reduced erosion is followed by a step-like sequence of small dams and storage basins and led to an eroded fan area, which is protected from further erosion by an additional series of small dams and protective measures. Mountain torrent engineering was based on the claim that zones of erosion are "ill"developed parts of torrent basins which have to be "cured"in order to create "healthy"nature. These arguments oppose historic approaches. Flood and sediment problems in the Lainbach basin in Upper Bavaria south of Munich were treated by the administration of the monastery in Benediktbeuern with more rational and closer co-operation to nature and far less bolstered budgets than nowadays. Nobody wrote about "diseases"of mountain torrents. Instead, hazards and danger were taken for granted and damages were mitigated in the cheapest ways possible. Limited by actual financial constraints, these historic approaches are of high interest for future development of cheaper and more sustainable strategies of sediment and flood control in mountain torrents.

When herbivores attack, plants specifically reconfigure their metabolism. Herbivory on the wild tobacco Nicotiana attenuata strongly induces the R2R3 MYB transcriptional activator MYB8, which was reported to specifically regulate the accumulation of phenolamides （PAs）. We discovered that transcriptional regulation of trypsin protease inhibitors （TPIs） and a threonine deaminase （TD） also depend on MYB8 expression. Induced distributions of PAs, TD and TPIs all meet predictions of optimal defense theory： their leaf concentrations increase with the fitness value and the probability of attack of the tissue. Therefore, we suggest that these defensive compounds have evolved to be co-regulated by MYB8.
