Introduction:Treatment and case management of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis(MDR-TB)is a significant challenge in tuberculosis(TB)control and prevention.This pilot study aims to apply and test a new electronic information system in order to help bolster case management of MDR-TB.Methods:The MDR-TB Case Management System(CMS)was developed and piloted in the Yunnan Tuberculosis Clinical Center(TCC)in 2017.Next,5 sites in Yunnan were randomly selected and sampled as pilots in 2018.The real-time regular follow-up rate(RFUR)was calculated for pilot sites.Loss to follow-up(LTFU)rates of MDR-TB treatment cohorts between pilot and non-pilot sites were compared by a chi-square test.LTFU for MDR-TB treatment cohorts was then assessed by univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression.Results:The average regular follow-up rate was 90.7%in TCC and 73.7%in five other pilot sites of Yunnan Province respectively.The average LTFU rate for pilot sites(9.0%)was lower than non-pilot sites(20.6%,P<0.01).The risk of LTFU during MDR-TB treatment reduced 61.7%in CMS pilot cases(adjusted odds ratio:0.38,95%confidence interval:0.23–0.60)compared with non-pilot cases.Conclusions:As a significant supplement to the Tuberculosis Information Management System,the CMS strengthened the collection,analysis,and utilization of strategic information for MDR-TB cases.The system improved case management by embedding it as a tool of the Comprehensive Supportive Care service model.

A letter to the editor constitutes a short communication addressing a range of topics pertinent to the readership of a journal(Dkhar,2018).This format offers several benefits,such as timeliness,accessibility,innovation,and conciseness,thereby serving as an effective means to disseminate cuttingedge scientific ideas.Over the past five years,there has been a considerable increase in the number of letters published,representing the highest growth rate(approximately 20%)observed in the last three decades(Figure 1A).In the field of academic publishing,letters to the editor are typically more concise than typical research papers.

The roots of the plant Cynanchum otophyllum C. K. Schneid(Apocynaceae), known as Qingyangshen in Chinese, are used for a long time as a traditional medicine by different ethnic communities in the Yunnan province(china). The multiple properties and applications of this herbal medicine have been analyzed. C. otophyllum is a perennial herbal liana, nonedible, and generally wild harvested. A cultivation method has been proposed to increase the fruit set level. Qingyangshen is used essentially to treat epilepsy, rheumatism, or other inflammatory diseases. The plant can be found also in diverse polyherbal preparations used in cosmetic or as food supplement(detox products), and in phyto-preparations claimed to reduce hair loss. The plant is a rich reservoir of C-21 steroidal glycosides. Many bioactive compounds have been isolated from this plant and some of them have been pharmacologically characterized, such as otophyllosides, cynotophyllosides, cynanotins, cynotogenins, cynanchins, all briefly evocated here. The plant presents also interesting features in other domains. In particular, leave extracts of C. otophyllum C. K. Schneid contain proteases which are exploited for the local preparation of a cheese-like milk cake. Qingyangshen herbal preparation can be useful to treat epilepsy and inflammation. It has applications beyond medicine in the cosmetic and food industry.

Continuous cropping has become a common form of agricultural production at present, but with the increase of continuous cropping years, continuous cropping obstacles such as soil-borne diseases and plant growth potential decline are becoming more and more common. At present, the causes of continuous cropping obstacles and continuous cropping restoration have become a hot issue in agricultural research. This paper summarized the effects of continuous cropping obstacles on soil microbial community structure and main technical methods to repair continuous cropping obstacles, such as agricultural measure management, microbial balance adjustment and soil improvement, aiming to provide theoretical reference for protecting the sustainable utilization of soil ecosystem and ensuring the stability of crop production.

The leaf phenology of trees has received particular attention for its crucial role in the global water and carbon balances,ecosystem,and species distribution.However,current studies on leaf phenology have mainly focused on temperate trees,while few studies including tropical trees.Little attention has been paid to globally extensive industrial plantations.Rubber plantations are important to both the local and global economies.In this study,we investigated the legacy effects of defoliation phenology on the following year’s leaf flushing,leaf disease,and also latex yield of rubber trees,an economically important tree to local people and the world.Results show that extended duration of defoliation increased the subsequent duration of refoliation and rates of infection by powdery mildew disease,but led to reduced latex yield in March.This legacy effect of rubber defoliation may relate to the carbohydrate reserved in the trees.A longer duration of defoliation would consume more reserved carbohydrates,reducing available reserves for disease defense and latex production.Extended duration of defoliation period was associated with either a lower temperature before the cessation of latex tapping in October-November and/or a higher temperature after the cessation of latex tapping in December-January.Leaf falling signals the end of photosynthetic activities in deciduous trees.Thus,the leaf falling phenology will impact ecological processes involving rubber trees.Our findings indicated that the inclusion of defoliation periods in future rubber trees’ research,will be crucial to furthering our understanding of leaf flushing,powdery mildew disease,and latex yield.

The distribution of titanium,carbon and associated elements(calcium,magnesium,silicon and aluminum)in a smelting process is studied by means of a chemical equilibrium calculation method for multiphase and multicomponent systems,and verified through comparison with production results.In particular,using the coexistence theory for titanium slag structures,the influence of the AIR(anthracite to ilmenite ratio)on the distribution of such elements is analyzed.The results show that the AIR can be adjusted to achieve a selective reduction of oxides in the melt.

别具魅力的董棕(Caryota obtusa)属于棕榈科(Arecaceae)的树种,在中国西南地区、印度、缅甸、泰国、老挝和越南有自然分布。董棕是一个具有重要经济价值且受到人为活动威胁的物种,其在云南的一些石灰岩山地乔木层占据优势。本研究的目的是阐明在云南石灰岩山地森林生态系统中董棕的群落结构、物种多样性、种群现状及其更新动态。为了全面深入的调查董棕群落,我们在云南南部10个县设置56个样方。根据样方数据,我们分析了群落的垂直结构、物种组成和种群结构,并对当地村民进行问卷采访记录了长期以来人为活动对董棕林的干扰情况。研究结果表明,董棕棕榈林分布在石灰岩山坡和沟谷,有7个群落类型。每个群落的垂直结构明显,分为乔木层、灌木层和林床。群落物种组成丰富,各群落类型的木本物种和草本物种的香农-维纳多样性指数均在2.1–3.8。董棕在胸径级上的分布为多峰型,属间歇性更新,且依赖于一定的自然干扰,董棕小树主要在无人为干扰或人为干扰小的群落中出现,重度人为干扰严重地阻碍了董棕的更新,其次的中度人为干扰也给董棕的更新带来了一定的困难。

A Qualitative Exploration of the Role of Antiretroviral Therapy on Chinese Rural Life

Objective To explore factors influencing the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) and receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in rural china.Methods In-depth interviews with 20 PLHA were conducted in March 1999.Participants were recruited from the USAID-funded Longitudinal Enhanced Evaluation of ART Project,which tracks a cohort of eligible PLHA receiving treatment at five collaborating treatment centers in Guangxi Autonomous Region,china.An interview guide (semi-structured with open-ended questions) was developed to provide a qualitative examination of the quality of life of PLHA.Results Participants identified that ART affects physical health,including the experience of pain,side effects,and opportunistic infections.ART imposes lifestyle constraints such as reduced mobility due to drug procurement,and social restrictions due to the daily drug regimen.Participants discussed the psychological burden of taking drugs,and the fear of accidental transmission to others,or having their disease status known by others,as well as optimistic feelings about their future due to ART.ART poses a significant drain on individual's economic resources due to related medical costs,and inability to seek seasonal migrant labor due to reduced mobility.Conclusion While china's national free ART program improved the physical health of those surveyed,their social and economic needs were left unaddressed.To improve life outcomes for PLHA,and by extension,the wider Chinese population,quality of life measures should be included when evaluating the success of the ART program.

Intense single-band red upconversion emission in BiOCl:Er3+ layered semiconductor via co-doping Ho3+

Exploring a new tuning way to facilely realize single-band red emission in trivalent rare-earth ions(RE3+) doped upconversion(UC) materials is still desirable.In this work,the intense single-band red emission is achieved by co-doping only Ho3+in the BiOCl:Er3+ under 1550 nm excitation.In the BiOCl layered host,co-doping Ho3+can further enhance the red emission and simultaneously suppress the green emission of Er3+,and thus obviously improve the red-to-green(R/G) ratio.It is found that Ho3+does not se rve as ene rgy trapping through the 5 I6 state as in traditional UC materials but acts as ET bridge(4 S3/2,2 H11/2(Er3+)→5 F4,5 S2(Ho3+)→4 F9/2(Er3+)).The tuning mechanism of Ho3+is discussed in detail and further confirms through a comparative experiment.Our research gives an unusual perspective to tune the UC behavior of Er3+through co-doping Ho3+,which might be inspiring for achievement of single-band red UC emission.
