In situ carbonate U-Pb dating is gaining popularity,and it has great potential for application in petroleum geology.However,the low U content(common Pb content of carbonate minerals,along with the uneven distribution of U and Pb and the lack of matrix-matched reference material make carbonate U-Pb dating inaccurate and less successful,which limits the widespread application in geosciences.This study evaluated the limitations of in situ carbonate U-Pb dating and proposed a method to rationally determine the laser ablation parameters of samples by improving the experimental approach based on the laser ablation sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(LA-SF-ICP-MS).By setting a different spot size and laser frequency for the reference material and unknown samples in the same session based on the U content of the sample,the ablation craters of the reference material and unknown samples were given the same depth/width ratio,avoiding systematic offset caused by differences in down-hole element fractionation and reducing the consume of reference material.Depending on the heterogeneous distribution of U and Pb contents in carbonate minerals,the method of grid screening and setting ablation spots during screening were used to quickly select domains with high U and low common Pb,which improves the efficiency of setting laser spots and the success rate of dating,as well as reduces the experimental time and economic cost.The accuracy and success rate of carbonate U-Pb dating were effectively improved by improving the experimental method,and the technique was applied to two carbonate samples with low U and high common Pb contents that were difficult to date by traditional methods.The two samples are the saddle dolomite in the central Sichuan Basin and the calcite cement in the sandstone reservoir of the Cretaceous Qingshuihe Formation in the South Junggar Basin.The robust ages have been obtained,which constrains the timing of the diagenetic and hydrocarbon accumulation process in the studied

Acoustic response characteristics of unsaturated porous media

By employing the plane wave analysis method, the dispersion equations associated with compressional and shear waves using Santos’s three-phase poroelastic theory were driven. considering the reservoir pressure, the high frequency corrections and the coupling drag of two fluids in pores, the influences of frequency and gas saturation on the phase velocities and the inverse quality factors of four body waves predicted by Santos’s theory were discussed in detail. The theoretical velocities of the fast compressional and shear waves were compared with the results of the low and high frequency experiments from open publications, respectively. The results showed that they are in good agreement in the low frequency case rather than in the high frequency case. In the latter case, several popular poroelastic models were considered and compared with the experimental data. In the models, the results of White’s theory fit the experimental data, but the parameter b in White’s model has a significant impact on the results. Under the framework of the linear viscoelasticity theory, the attenuation mechanism of Santos’s model was extended, and the comparisons between the experimental and theoretical results were also made with respect to attenuation. For the case of water saturation less than 90%, the extended model makes good predictions of the inverse quality factor of shear wave. There is a significant difference between the experimental and theoretical results for the compressional wave, but the difference can be explained by the experimental data available.

Structural characteristics of continental carbonate-rich shale and shale oil movability: A case study of the Paleogene Shahejie Formation shale in Jiyang Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, China

Based on rock mineral and geochemical analysis, microscopic observation, physical property measurement, and thin laminae separation test, etc., the characteristics of typical laminae of the Paleogene Shahejie Formation carbonate-rich shale in the Jiyang Depression were analyzed, and the organic matter abundance, reservoir properties, and oil-bearing properties of different laminae were compared. Typical shale storage-seepage structures were classified, and the mobility of oil in different types of shale storage-seepage structure was compared. The results show that the repeated superposition of mud laminae and calcite laminae are the main layer structure of carbonate-rich shales. The calcite laminae are divided into micritic calcite laminae, sparry calcite laminae and fibrous calcite vein. The mud-rich laminae are the main contributor to the organic matter abundance and porosity of shale, with the best hydrocarbon generation potential, reservoir capacity, and oil-bearing property. The micritic calcite laminae also have relatively good hydrocarbon generation potential, reservoir capacity and oil-bearing property. The sparry calcite laminae and fibrous calcite vein have good permeability and conductivity. Four types of shale storage-seepage structure are developed in the carbonate-rich shale, and the mobility of oil in each type of storage-seepage structure is in descending order: sparry calcite laminae enriched shale storage-seepage structure, mixed calcite laminae enriched shale storage-seepage structure, fibrous calcite vein enriched shale storage-seepage structure, and micritic calcite laminae enriched shale storage-seepage structure. The exploration targets of carbonate-rich shale in the Jiyang Depression Shahejie Formation are different in terms of storage-seepage structure at different thermal evolution stages.

Instability is an inherent problem with the attenuation compensation methods and has been partially relieved by using the inverse scheme.However,the conventional inversion-based attenuation compensation approaches ignore the important prior information of the seismic dip.Thus,the compensated result appears to be distorted spatial continuity and has a low signal-to-noise ratio(S/N).To alleviate this issue,we have incorporated the seismic dip information into the inversion framework and have developed a dip-constrained attenuation compensation(DCAC)algorithm.The seismic dip information,calculated from the poststack seismic data,is the key to construct a dip constraint term.Benefiting from the introduction of the seismic dip constraint,the DCAC approach maintains the numerical stability and preserves the spatial continuity of the compensated result.Synthetic and field data examples demonstrate that the proposed method can not only improve seismic resolution,but also protect the continuity of seismic data.

Sedimentary characteristics and depositional evolution of carbonate platform during the Cambrian and Ordovician in eastern Tarim Basin,NW China

The eastern Tarim Basin(Tadong Area)has gained wide attentions on large-scale marine carbonate reservoirs in Cambrian-Ordovician due to significant hydrocarbon discoveries.A systematic analysis combining thin sections,cores,wireline logs,and seismic data is conducted on Cambrian-Ordovician carbonate platform in the whole eastern Tarim Basin,including Gucheng area,Majiaer area,and western Luobopo rise(Luoxi area).The results show that 8 sub-facies and more than 10 microfacies are developed including open platform,restricted/semi-restricted platform,reef-shoal around platform margin,drowned platform,foreslope,neritic platform,and deep-water basin.As both key areas for hosting petroleum reserves during the Cambrian and Ordovician,the Luoxi area is dominated by deep-water basin facies,while the Gucheng area is dominated by neritic platform facies and deep-water basin facies during the Lower Cambrian.The deposition evolution during the whole Cambrian is dominated by slope facies and deep-water facies,platform margin facies,and platform facies.In contrast,it is dominated by open platform facies during the whole Ordovician.The depositional evolution of carbonate platform is mainly controlled by paleo-geomorphology and sea-level changes.The distribution of paleo-geomorphologic units plays an important role in controlling types and distributions of carbonate platform facies.The transgression assists in growth of reef-shoal complex and lime mud mound in the Early Ordovician.However,with neritic platform and slope being to disappeared,in the Middle Ordovician,platform margin facies are well developed in Gucheng Area.Platform facies and deepwater basin facies are widely distributed.Finally,carbonate platform is drowned due to sea level rising in the Late Ordovician.The depositional evolution of carbonate platform coinciding falling and rising of sea-level changes can be beneficial for appropriate carbonate reservoirs identification and petroleum exploration.

Reservoir-forming conditions and key exploration & development techniques for Xushen gas field in Northeast China

exploration and development of volcanic gas reservoirs is a world-class problem,and less experience can be learned at home and abroad.Through study of reservoir-forming conditions of Xushen gas field,four sets of hydrocarbon source rocks,mainly mudstone and coal seam of Shahezi Formation,are identified in this gas field;its cap rocks are mudstone in Member 2 of Denglouku Formation,and Member 1 and Member 2 of Quantou Formation.By simulating reservoir-forming history,four filling periods of the Xushen gas field are determined,and the most favorable exploration targets are crater areas with structural highs,large thickness and good physical properties.On the basis of diagenetic mechanism study,the criteria of sequence series,lithology identification and reservoir types of gas reservoirs have been established;the volcanic rock bodies have been carefully depicted and the distribution laws of effective reservoirs of gas pools have been figured out.Based on evaluating reservoir-permeability characteristics of reservoirs,the gas well productivity characteristics(mainly type II,III and IV wells)have been identified,and the optimum design technology for volcanic gas reservoir development has been developed.The gas reservoirs in all blocks of Xushen gas field are classified into three types:singlebody gas reservoir model,disconnected multi-body gas reservoir model and interconnected multi-body gas reservoir model.Stimulation technologies,including multi-layer fracturing of vertical well,staged fracturing of open-hole horizontal well and volume fracturing,have been developed.According to gas well production performance,pressure change,well-controlled reserves and spatial distribution of volcanic bodies,combined with numerical simulation and prediction of gas reservoirs,the evaluation method of residual potential of volcanic gas reservoirs has been formed.Key technologies for effective exploration and development of complex volcanic gas reservoirs have been established and perfected,and bring good development effect.The rese

Assuming a reservoir with a typical salt-lake background in the Qaidam Basin as a testbed,in this study the var-iation law of the rock electrical parameters has been determined through water displacement experiments with different salinities.As made evident by the results,the saturation index increases with the degree of water injec-tion.When the salinity of the injected water is lower than 80000 ppm,the resistivity of the rock sampleﬁrst decreases,then it remains almost constant in an intermediate stage,andﬁnally it grows,thereby giving rise to a‘U’proﬁle behavior.As the salinity decreases,the water saturation corresponding to the inﬂection point of the resistivity becomes lower,thereby leading to a wider‘U’type range and a higher terminal resistivity.For dif-ferent samples,higher initial resistivity of the sample in the oil-bearing state,and higher resistivity after low-sali-nity water washing are obtained when a thicker lithology is considered.

Impact of clay stabilizer on the methane desorption kinetics and isotherms of Longmaxi Shale,China

Knowing methane desorption characteristics is essential to define the contribution of adsorbed gas to gas well production.To evaluate the synthetic effect of a clay stabilizer solution on methane desorption kinetics and isotherms pertaining to Longmaxi shale,an experimental setup was designed based on the volumetric method.The objective was to conduct experiments on methane adsorption and desorption kinetics and isotherms before and after clay stabilizer treatments.The experimental data were a good fit for both the intraparticle diffusion model and the Freundlich isotherm model.We analyzed the effect of the clay stabilizer on desorption kinetics and isotherms.Results show that clay stabilizer can obviously improve the diffusion rate constant and reduce the methane adsorption amount.Moreover,we analyzed the desorption efficiency before and after treatment as well as the adsorbed methane content.The results show that a higher desorption efficiency after treatment can be observed when the pressure is higher than 6.84 MPa.Meanwhile,the adsorbed methane content before and after treatment all increase when the pressure decreases,and clay stabilizer can obviously promote the adsorbed methane to free gas when the pressure is lower than 19 MPa.This can also be applied to the optimization formulation of slickwater and the design of gas well production.

Study on the influence of fracture lengths and fracture angles on residual oil distribution based on the slab model

After fracturing in the pilot area,channeling occurs at a low fracture angle(15).Based on the resistance-water saturation relationship,three-dimensional physical simulation methods are used in the laboratory to study the effect of different fracture angles and lengths on the residual oil distribution during the displacement process.Meanwhile,recovery percent,displacement efficiency and expanding sweep co-efficient to the improvement of recovery percent are also discussed.The results show that the fracture angle and length are closely related to the oil saturation distribution in these models.As the fracture angle increases,the sweep coefficient decreases(0.2412→0.1463),and the recovery percent also in-creases(46.16→56.88%),but the extent of increase has been reduced(7.96→2.96%).The extension of the fracture length is more prone to have a cross-flow phenomenon;the sweep coefficient is reduced(0.2412→0.1463).compared to the model with 1/2 oil-water well spacing,the recovery percent is decreased by 14.29%.In different fracture models,the increasable sweep coefficient has a greater impact on oil recovery than the increasable displacement efficiency(71.30→28.70%).

“Second quantitative characterization”and its application in fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoirs

The Ordovician fracture-vug carbonate reservoirs of Tarim Basin,are featured by developed vugs,caves and fractures.The strong heterogeneity results in huge uncertainty when these reservoirs are quantitatively characterized using merely static seismic data.The effective quantitative characterization of the reservoirs has been an urgent problem to be solved.This study creatively proposes the"second quantitative characterization"technique with the combination of dynamic and static data based on the primary static quantitative characterization and fully considering lots of key influence factors when conducting characterization.In this technique,dynamic analysis methods such as well testing,production rate transient analysis,dynamic reserve evaluation and dynamic connectivity evaluation are used to get understandings on this kind of reservoir.These understandings are used as statistical parameters to constrain the inversion of seismic wave impedance to improve the relationship between wave impedance and porosity and determine the fracture-vug morphology,calculate dynamic reserves,and then a more accurate fracture-vugmodel can be selected and used to calculate the oil-water contact inversely based on the results of"second quantitative characterization".This method can lower the uncertainties in the primary quantitative characterization of fracture-vug reservoirs,enhance the accuracy of characterization results significantly,and has achieved good application results in the fracture-vug carbonate reservoirs of Tarim Basin.
