Objective Many previous researches have documented the tectonic evolution of the northern margin of North China Craton. However, whether the age of original Silurian Badangshan Formation in the study area belongs to the Archean, Silurian or Devonian remains controversial, and the ductile deformation time of this formation also lack of chronological study. This work focused on the composition of the rocks in the original Silurian Badangshan Formation of the Jiefangyingzi and Dachaoyanggou area of Chifeng, and the U-Pb dating of rhyolite and late intrusive rocks, and then discussed the age of ductile deformation in order to provide new basic information for the structural evolution of this area.

Hydrothermal mineral assemblages and related hydrothermally enhanced fracturing are common in the Precambrian Dengying Formation of Central Sichuan Basin. Petrographic and geochemical analyses of core samples show that the hydrothermal dolomite reservoirs of Dengying Formation consist of four main types of pores in the reservoir facies. These include: 1) hydrothermal dissolution vug(or pore), 2) intercrystalline pore, 3) residual inter-breccia vug(or pore), and 4) enlarged dissolved-fracture. There are three different fabrics dolomite in hydrothermal dolomite reservoirs, namely, saddle dolomite, fine-medium dolomite and micritic dolomite. Micritic dolomite is the original lithology of host rock. Saddle dolomite with curved or irregular crystal faces was directly crystallized from hydrothermal fluids(average temperature 192°C). Fine-medium dolomites are the products of recrystallization of micritic dolomite, resulting in abnormal geochemical characteristics, such as slight depletion of δ^(18)O, significant enrichment of Mn-Fe and ^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr, and positive Eu anomaly. A model for the distribution of various hydrothermal dolomite reservoir facies is proposed here, which incorporates three fundamental geological controls: 1) extensional tectonics and tectono-hydrothermal events(i.e., the Xingkai Taphrogenesis of Late Sinian-Early Cambrian, and Emei Taphrogenesis of Late Permian), 2) hydrothermal fluid storage in clastic rocks with large thickness(e.g., Nanhua System of Chengjiang Formation and part of Doushantuo Formation), and 3) confining bed for hydrothermal fluids(such as, the shale in Qiongzhusi Formation). The supply of hydrothermal fluid is critical. Large basement-rooted faults and associated grid-like fracture system may function as the channels for upward migration of hydrothermal fluid flow. In a very gentle platform-margin paleogeographic environment, platform-margin reef flat facies carbonate reservoir rocks were developed in the Changxing Formation of Yuanba field. Later weak structural evolution and diagenetic evolution caused the Changxing Formation to form lithologic traps, with good reservoirs such as dissolved bioclastic dolostone and dissolved pore dolostone. The Changxing Formation gas reservoir is a pseudo-layered porous lithologic gas reservoir under pressure depletion drive, with high H2S and moderate CO2 contents. This paper predictes that the conducting system for the Changxing Formation gas reservoir is possibly composed of the pores and microfractures in the Changxing Formation reservoir, the top erosional surface of the Changxing Formation, as well as the micropores and microfractures in the underlying formations. The Changxing Formation reservoir has experienced 3 hydrocarbon charging stages. This paper suggests that diffusion is the major formation mechanism for this gas reservoir. In the Middle and Late Yanshanian, the Yuanba area entered the major gas charging stage. The gas migrated mainly through diffusion and with the assistance of seepage flow in small faults and microfractures from the source rocks and the other oil-bearing strata to the Changxing Formation carbonate reservoir rocks, forming lithologic gas pools. In the Himalayan Epoch, the lithologic traps were uplifted as a whole without strong modification or overlapping, and were favorable for gas preservation.

Logging response characteristics and formation process of flushed zone in the Orinoco heavy oil belt, Venezuela

The origins and logging responses of flushed zones in some blocks of Orinoco heavy oil belt, Venezuela are still unclear. To solve this issue, we examined the conventional logging, nuclear magnetic resonance logging, fluid viscosity, core analysis and oil field production data comprehensively to find out the logging responses and origins of the flushed zones. The results show that the main reason for the formation of flushed zone is surface water invasion, which leads to crude oil densification. The crude oil densification produces asphalt membrane(asphalt crust) which wraps up free water, causing special logging responses of the flushed zones. According to the different logging responses, we classified the flushed zones into two types and analyzed the formation processes of the two types of flushed zones. According to the characteristics of logging curves after water flush, we confirmed that the water flush began earlier than the reservoir accumulation.

The continuous growth of recoverable reserves in a waterflooding oilfield has a significant impact on the patterns of production evolution. A new production evolution model is established by improving the Weng Cycle model. With the new model, the statistical correspondence between the production decline stage and the reserve-production imbalance is clarified,and the correlation of water cut with the recovery percent of recoverable reserves is discussed, providing quantitative basis of reservoir engineering for dividing development stages of oilfield and defining mature oilfields. According to the statistics of oilfields in eastern China, the time point corresponding to the reserve-production balance coefficient dropping to less than 1dramatically is well correlated the beginning point of production decline, thus the time when the reserve-production balance coefficient drops dramatically can be taken as the initiation point of production decline stage. The research results show that the water cut and the recovery percent of recoverable reserves have a good statistical match in the high water cut stage, and it is more rational to take both the start point of production decline stage and the water cut of 90%(or the recovery percent of recoverable reserves of 80%) as the critical criteria for defining a mature oilfield. Five production evolution patterns can be summarized as follows: growth–peak plateau–stepped decline, growth–stepped stabilizing–stepped decline, growth–stepped stabilizing–rapid decline, growth–peak plateau–rapid decline, and growth–continuous decline.

A great breakthrough was achieved on the Middle Devonian's oil-gas exploration in the Longmenshan area in northwestern Sichuan.However,only the Guanwushan Formation was researched in detail.The underlying formation-Jinbaoshi Formation as a set of the potential well reservoir and its reservoir characteristics have not been discussed.Based on the section's fine description,thin section analysis,and core borehole logging,combined with petrophysical analysis,the reservoir characteristics,controlling factors,and evolution process of the Jinbaoshi Formation reservoir in the Longmenshan area are deeply studied in this paper.The results showed that the Jinbaoshi Formation has developed a set of sand-shale interbedding deposit of terrigenous clastic and carbonate rocks.The reservoir lithology is mainly quartz sandstone and calcareous quartz sandstone.The quartz sandstone reservoir has good physical properties,but the calcareous quartz sandstone has the characteristics of strong heterogeneity,low porosity,and permeability.Residual intergranular pores are mainly developed in the reservoir space.And the development of intercrystalline pores and intergranular dissolved pores can also be seen,but the development frequency is low,and the scale is small.Among them,the Devonian Jinbaoshi Formation quartz sandstone's average porosity is about 8%,and the highest is 18.43%.The main diagenesis types of the Jinbaoshi Formation are compaction,recrystalization,and dissolution.Compaction is the main reason for the destruction of original pores,and dissolution is the main driving force for later porosity and permeability improvement.Rock fragments,calcareous silty clasts,and bioclastic grains are the main dissolution objects.The formation of intergranular dissolved pores significantly improves the physical properties of the reservoir.Therefore,the reservoir development of the Jinbaoshi Formation is mainly controlled both by favourable sedimentary facies and diagenesis.Quartz sandstone and calcareous sandstone of the Jinbaoshi Formation we

The ultra-deep Cambrian System in the Tarim Basin is an important field for petroleum exploration,while fine division of the Cambrian strata remains controversial.In recent years,carbon isotope stratigraphy of the Cambrian System has been established and widely used.Here,we report an integrated profile of carbonate and organic carbon isotopic values(δ^(13)C_(carb)andδ^(13)C_(org))from cuttings of the Tadong2 Well in the eastern Tarim Basin.Three carbon isotope anomalies of BACE,ROECE and SPICE were recognized on theδ^(13)C_(carb)profile.Three apogees and a nadir on theδ^(13)C_(org)profile and the onset of ROECE on theδ^(13)C_(carb)profile were suggested as boundaries of the present four series of the Cambrian System.Suggested boundaries are easily identifiable on the gamma logging profile and is consistent with the previous division scheme,based on biostratigraphic evidence in outcrop sections.Abnormal carbon cycle perturbations and organic carbon burials during the BACE and SPICE events might be related to the reduction and expansion of a huge dissolved organic carbon reservoir in the deep ocean of the ancient Tarim Basin.

Discovery rates for all metals, including gold, are declining, the cost per significant discovery is increasing sharply, and the economic situation of the industry is one of low base rate. The current hierarchical structure of the exploration and mining industry makes this situation difficult to redress. Economic geologists can do little to influence the required changes to the overall structure and philosophy of an industry driven by business rather than geological principles, However, it should be possible to follow the lead of the oil industry and improve the success rate of greenfield exploration, necessary for the next group of lower-exploration-spend significant mineral deposit discoveries. Here we promote the concept that mineral explorers need to carefully consider the scale at which their exploration targets are viewed. It is necessary to carefully assess the potential of drill targets in terms of terrane to province to district scale, rather than deposit scale, where most current economic geology research and conceptual thinking is concentrated. If orogenic, IRGD, Carlin-style and IOCG gold-rich systems are viewed at the deposit scale, they appear quite different in terms of conventionally adop- ted research parameters. However, recent models for these deposit styles show increasingly similar source-region parameters when viewed at the lithosphere scale, suggesting common tectonic settings. It is only by assessing individual targets in their tectonic context that they can be more reliably ranked in terms of potential to provide a significant drill discovery. Targets adjacent to craton margins, other lithosphere boundaries, and suture zones are clearly favoured for all of these gold deposit styles, and such exploration could lead to incidental discovery of major deposits of other metals sited along the same tectonic boundaries.
