Wereport on the colloidal and rheological characterization of suspensions of commercial single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNT)and oxidized single walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNT-oxi24h),in water and fetal bovine serum(FBS).The effects of two surfactants,dodecyl-benzene sodium sulfonate(SBDS)and sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)at different concentrations(0.5-2.0%)on the zeta potential and the rheology of the suspensions is also investigated.SWCNT suspensions were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM)and Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM).The colloidal stability was determined by measurements of zeta potential in the physiological pH range 6.0

Historically,patients with cancer were told to avoid physical exertion.This dogma has changed over the last 2 decades,with an exponential growth in the number of studies showing not only the safety,but also the benefits of regular physical activity/exercise in the cancer continuum,notably for attenuating treatment-related toxicities and side effects.

Cell replacement therapy has long been proposed as a treatment for the damaged nervous system.One of the most challenging aspects of such a strategy,however,is finding sources of donor cells for transplantation.Autologous neural cells are rarely an option as every cell in the nervous system has a defined function that would be lost if that cell was to be removed.One possibility would be sourcing precursor or differentiated cells from fetal tissues;however,aside from ethical issues,heterologous cells are at risk of immunological rejection in the long term.Methodological improvements over the past 15 years have led to the possibility that autologous non-neural cells could be used for cell transplantation through their conversion into neural derivatives.

Purpose:To examine the effects of a school-based karate intervention on academic achievement,psychosocial functioning,and physical fitness in children aged 7-8 years.Methods:Twenty schools in 5 different european countries(2 second-grade classrooms per school)participated in a cluster randomized controlled trial(Sport at School trial).Participants were assigned to either a control group,which continued with their habitual physical education lessons,or to an intervention group,which replaced these lessons with a 1-year karate intervention(Karate Mind and Movement program).A total of 721 children(344 girls and 377 boys,7.4±0.5 years old,mean±SD)completed the study,of which 333 and 388 were assigned to the control group and intervention group,respectively.Outcomes included academic performance(average grade),psychosocial functioning(Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for parents),and different markers of physical fitness(cardiorespiratory fitness,balance,and flexibility).Results:The intervention provided small but significant benefits compared to the control group for academic achievement(d=0.16;p=0.003),conduct problems(d=-0.28;p=0.003),cardiorespiratory fitness(d=0.36;p0.05).Conclusion:A 1-year school-based karate intervention was effective in improving academic achievement,conduct problems,and physical fitness in primary school children.The results support the inclusion of karate during physical education lessons.

Designing the support system for a deep tunnel in weak rock is always challenging,because a misjudgment of real rock behavior can lead to failures.During the construction of the Legutiano tunnel,which belongs to the high-speed railway network named Y-Basque in Spain,the measured convergences exhibited large deformations,which were significantly higher than those in the detailed design.At first glance,these deformations were associated with squeezing,as the tunnel was excavated in flysch-shales and limonite with a maximum cover of approximately 360 m.The aim of this study is to perform a retrofit analysis to compare the most popular empirical and analytical approaches for evaluating the squeezing effect,using geotechnical data pertaining to other tunnels excavated in the same area and in the same geological formations.Finally,a non-linear finite element analysis,focusing on time-dependent rock behavior,is conducted to reproduce the convergences measured.

AIM：To evaluate the distribution of refractive error in young subjects in a rural area of Paraguay in the context of an international cooperation campaign for the prevention of blindness. METHODS：A sample of 1466 young subjects（ranging from 3 to 22 years old）,with a mean age of 11.21±3.63 years old,were examined to assess their distance visual acuity（VA）and refractive error. The first screening examination performed by trained volunteers,included visual acuity testing,autokeratometry and non-cycloplegic autorefraction. Inclusion criteria for a second complete cycloplegic eye examination by an optometrist were VA 〈20/25（0.10 log MAR or 0.8 decimal）and/or corneal astigmatism ≥1.50 D. RESULTS：An uncorrected distance VA of 0 log MAR（1.0decimal）was found in 89.2% of children. VA 〈20/25 and/or corneal astigmatism ≥1.50 D was found in 3.9% of children（n=57）,with a prevalence of hyperopia of 5.2%（0.2%of the total）in this specific group. Furthermore,myopia（spherical equivalent ≤-0.5 D）was found in 37.7% of the refracted children（0.5% of the total）. The prevalence of refractive astigmatism（cylinder ≤-1.50 D）was 15.8%（0.6% of the total）. Visual impairment（VI）（0.05≤VA≤0.3）was found in 12/114（0.4%）of the refracted eyes. Main causes for VI were refractive error（58%）,retinal problems（17%,2/12）,albinism（17%,2/12）and unknown（8%,1/12）.CONCLUSION：A low prevalence of refractive error has been found in this rural area of Paraguay,with higher prevalence of myopia than of hyperopia.

Cloud-based robotics systems leverage a wide range of Information Technologies(IT)to offer tangible benefits like cost reduction,powerful computational capabilities,data offloading,etc.However,the centralized nature of cloud computing is not well-suited for a multitude of Operational Technologies(OT)nowadays used in robotics systems that require strict real-time guarantees and security.Edge computing and fog computing are complementary approaches that aim at mitigating some of these challenges by providing computing capabilities closer to the users.The goal of this work is hence threefold:i)to analyze the current edge computing and fog computing landscape in the context of robotics systems,ii)to experimentally evaluate an end-to-end robotics system based on solutions proposed in the literature,and iii)to experimentally identify current benefits and open challenges of edge computing and fog computing.Results show that,in the case of an exemplary delivery application comprising two mobile robots,the robot coordination and range can be improved by consuming real-time radio information available at the edge.However,our evaluation highlights that the existing software,wireless and virtualization technologies still require substantial evolution to fully support edge-based robotics systems.
