In this paper, the essential role played by tie Tibetan Plateau in the formation of large scale low level jet over China is shown. Using the ECMWF limited area model we have performed some numerical experiments with various modified orography for a real case. The comparison of no-mountain run with the control one shows that the Plateau acts as a west boundary to the flows from the south, thus helping concentrate the momentum in a narrow belt. The close connection between the jet and the monsoon current is also investigated. The confluence of the currents from the subtropical high and mid-latitude trough mainly results in the strong wind centre at mid-troposphere rather than at lower level.

High resolution experiments with the operational ECMWF model starting from observed data wereused to test the impact of the 1982/83 E1 Nino sea surface temperature anomaly on the zonal mean me-ridional circulation and transfer properties of the atmosphere. The increased sea surface temperature in the Eastern Pacific Ocean along the Equator amplifies theHadley circulation. This enhances the convergence of moisture and sensible heat towards the tropics, induc-ing positive feedback between tropical diabatic heating and direct mean meridional circulation. The am-plification of the Hadley circulation also results in an equatorward extension of the mid-latitude wester-lies. Equatorial SST anomaly makes the zonal mean eddy transfer properties in the winter hemisphereundergo substantial changes, and the maxima of transfer of heat and momentum are all shifted to highlatitudes. Based on the continuity of the atmosphere, a new scheme is developed to diagnose the atmospheric mean meridional circulations. ECMWF analyses four times per day of January 1982 were retrieved to evaluate the global mean meridional circulation. Investigations and calculations show that this new scheme produced more reasonable results in comparison with the traditional scheme. The existence of the double Hadley cell in the winter hemisphere is confirmed as well.

Experiments using a quasi-geostrophic model and the ECMWF T21 spectral model with and without orography are performed to investigate the effects of mechanical forcing on the mean meridional circulation. Results show that mechanical forcing intensifies the horizontal poleward heat flux and redistributes the eddy angular momentum in the vertical, and that this changes significantly the intensity and location of the mean meridional circulation *** is shown how the mean meridional circulation is set up in such a way to satisfy both the dynamical and thermodynamical transport requirements of the model atmosphere. Whenever external forcing changes the eddy fluxes, the Coriolis torques from the upper horizontal branches of the mean meridional circulations change to balance the extra divergence of eddy momentum flux, and additional adiabatic heating is produced by the vertical branches of the toroids to balance the extra divergence of eddy heat flux. In part Ⅱ of this paper, the effeets of diabatic heating and the Tibetan Plateau on the seasonal transition of the general circulation over Asia is investigated. It is shown that the effect of differential heating mainly due to land-sea contrast dominates even fora medium time scale. The effect of the Plateau seems to reinforce but not radically change the basic features of the events.

Cloud-based services introduce a paradigm shift in how users access,process and analyse Big Earth data.A key challenge is to align the current state of how users access,process and analyse the data with trends and roadmaps large data organisations *** addition,due to the increased availability of open data,a more diverse user base wants to take advantage of Earth science data leading to new user *** run a web-based survey among Big Earth data users to better understand the motivation to migrate to cloud-based services as well as the challenges and opportunities that might *** show an overall interest in moving to cloud-based services but air an insufficient literacy in cloud systems and a lack of trust due to security concerns and opacity of emerging *** gaps demand efforts on three ***,cloud services shall be targeted at intermediate users instead of policy-and decision-makers and over-engineered systems with a high level of abstraction should be ***,more substantial capacity-building efforts are required to decrease the existing gap in cloud skills and ***,a cloud certification mechanism could help in building up overall trust in cloud-based services.

Temporal Variability of Tropospheric NOover Cities in the United States, Western Europe and China from 2005 to 2022

Anthropogenic Nitrogen oxides（NOx= NO2+ NO） emissions are highly concentrated in urban area, and the weekly cycles,seasonal patterns and long-term trends of tropospheric NO2columns over cities differ from region to region due to different emission sectoral compositions and human activities. In this study, we used satellite observed tropospheric NO2column data to compare the longand short-term NO2column density time series over cities in the United Sates（the U.S.）, western Europe and China. The results showed that in all the targeted cities, the outbreak of the Corona Virus Disease in 2019（COVID-19） moved the December peak of the city-level NO2columns forward to November and October or even earlier in 2020 and 2021. On weekly level, cities in the U.S. show the lowest NO2columns ratio on weekend/work day, then come the western european cities, and a weak weekly pattern is seen in Chinese *** all the cites, we find a higher weekend/work day NO2ratio in cold seasons than in warm seasons, indicating a higher contribution from NOx emission sectors of residential, industry and power plants in the warm seasons. In the long-term, NO2columns over the *** western european cities declined by a fraction twice that of the regional mean level from 2004 to 2021. In China, NO2columns started to decrease since 2012, at a similar rate between the city and regional level. This work confirms the importance to quantify and control NOx emissions from cities.

Meal timing plays a crucial role for cardiometabolic health,given the circadian regulation of cardiometabolic ***,to the best of our knowledge,no concept of meal timing exists in traditional european medicine(TEM).Therefore,in this narrative review,we aim to define the optimal time slot for energy intake and optimal energy distribution throughout the day in a context of TEM and explore further *** reviewing literature published between 2002 and 2022,we found that optimal timing for energy intake may be between 06:00 and 09:00,12:00 and 14:00,and between 15:00 and18:00,with high energy breakfast,medium energy lunch and low energy dinner and possibly further adjustments according to one’s chronotype and ***,timing and distribution of energy intake may serve as a novel therapeutic strategy to optimize coction,a concept describing digestion and metabolism in TEM.

The onset of the 1979 summer monsoon is investigated using the ECMWF grid-point model. The role of the Tibetan Plateau in this process is investigated by means of parallel model integrations with different orographies. Similarly, the relative roles of land-sea thermal contrast, latent heat release and Southern Hemisphere influence are studied. The influence of the African Highland on the onset of the Somali jet is also explored. A generally satisfactory performance of the model in representing the onset of the monsoon is documented and various contributions to this from different model components are discussed. In Pan I of this paper the impact from the Southern Hemisphere is presented.
