We investigated the effects of selective logging disturbances on tree diversity and soil characteristics in the Bia Conservation Area in southwest Ghana. The study was conducted in unlogged, 29-35 years post-logged and swamp forests using ten 25 m× 25 m plots. In total, we identified 310 individual trees belonging to 87 species. Mean Shannon-Weiner index was highest in the post-logged forest but there were no significant differences in tree density, dominance, or DBH size class distributions between these forests. Soil physical properties such as pH and bulk density up to 30 cm depth were similar in the two of forests In terms of soil nutrient status, available P, exchangeable K and total N contents were all similar in the unlogged and post-logged forests. Our findings suggest that the effects of logging on tree diversity are compara-tively long-term, in contrast to its short-term effects on some top soil physical and chemical characteristics.

Mercury（Hg） in the Arctic is a significant concern due to its bioaccumulative and neurotoxic properties, and the sensitivity of Arctic environments. Previous research has found high levels of Hg in snowpacks with high chloride（Cl-） concentrations. We hypothesised that Cl- would increase Hg retention by decreasing Hg photoreduction to Hg（0） in melted Arctic snow. To test this, changes in Hg photoreduction kinetics in melted Alert, NU snow were quantified with changing Cl- concentration and UV intensity. Snow was collected and melted in Teflon bottles in May 2014, spiked with 0–10 μg/g Cl-, and irradiated with 3.52–5.78 W·m-2 UV（280–400 nm）radiation in a Luz Chem photoreactor. Photoreduction rate constants（k）（0.14–0.59 hr-1） had positive linear relationships with [Cl-], while photoreduced Hg amounts（Hg（Ⅱ）red） had negative linear relationships with [Cl-]（1287–64 pg in 200 g melted snow）. Varying UV and[Cl-] both altered Hg（Ⅱ）red amounts, with more efficient Hg stabilisation by Cl- at higher UV intensity, while k can be predicted by Cl- concentration and/or UV intensity, depending on experimental parameters. Overall, with future projections for greater snowpack Cl- loading,our experimental results suggest that more Hg could be delivered to Arctic aquatic ecosystems by melted snow（smaller Hg（Ⅱ）red expected）, but the Hg in the melted snow that is photoreduced may do so more quickly（larger k expected）.

Carbonate shells have an astonishing ability in the removal of Cd^2＋ in a short time period with emphasis on being a low cost adsorbent. In the present study, the sorption capacity of carbonate shells was studied for Cd^2＋ in batch experiments. The influence of different carbonate shell sizes and physico-chemical factors were evaluated and the results were analyzed for its correlation matrices by using Predictive Analytics Software （PASW）. The miner- alogy state of aqueous solution regarding the saturation index was simulated using PHREEQC to identify the Cd^2＋ uptake mechanism. The Cd uptake rates were calculated as well as Ca^2＋, HCO3- concentration, pH, ambient humidity and temperature were measured. Cd2＋ removal of 91.52% was achieved after 5 h adsorption. The adsorption efficiencies were significantly influenced by pH as they increased with the increase of pH from acidic solution （5.50±0.02） to slightly alkaline （7.60±0.05）. In addition, the mineralogy state of aqueous solution calculated from PHREEQC confirmed that the increment of Ca^2＋ and HCO3- concentrations in solution was attributed to the dissolution of carbonate shells. Moreover, the ion exchange adsorption mechanism of Cd^2＋ toward Ca^2＋ was identified as the process involved in Cd^2＋ uptake.

Root and shoot growth of Brassica campestris L. and B. juncea increased significantly （P 〈 0.01） with enhanced Ca2＋ treatment along with 60 mM NaCl in the root medium. The maximum fresh mass of shoot and root in *** was recorded at 10 mM Ca2＋ concentration. The relative growth rate of shoot of both species reached its maximum at 8 mM of Ca2＋ concentration. Average rate of Ca2＋ intake （lCa） was higher in B. juncea than 6. campestris. In B. juncea, the average transport of Ca2＋ to shoot increased by 19%, 38%, 119%, 125% and 169% compared with the control. Furthermore specific utilization rate of Ca2＋ was higher in B. juncea than B. campestris. In B. campestris it increased by 9%, 32%, 41% and 59% at 4, 6, 8, and 10 mM of calcium in comparison to 2 mM Ca2＋ treatment. At 4, 6, 8 and 10 mM of Ca2＋ application, the increase in the leaf area ratio was 10,17, 23 and 30%, respectively. In the shoot and root portions of B. campestris and ***, Ca2＋ had a linear relationship with potassium and sulfur, whereas it was in antagonism with sodium ion.

Permeation of Cu（Ⅱ） from its aqueous solution through a supported liquid membrane （SLM） containing di（2-ethylhexyl）phosphoric acid （D2EHPA） carrier dissolved in coconut oil has been studied. The effects of Cu（Ⅱ）, pH （in feed）, H2SO4 （stripping） and D2EHPA （in membrane） concentrations have been investigated. The stability of the D2EHPA-coconut oil has also been evaluated. High Cu（Ⅱ） concentration in the feed leads to an increase in flux from 4.1 × 10^-9 to 8.9 × 10^-9 mol/（m^2·s） within the Cu（Ⅱ） concentration range 7.8×10^-4-78.6×10^-4 mol/L at pH of 4.0 in the feed and 12.4 × 10^-4 mol/L D2EHPA in the membrane phase. Increase in H2SO4 concentration in strip solution leads to an increase in copper ions flux up to 0.25 mol/L H2SO4, providing a maximum flux of 7.4 × 10^-9 mol/（m^2·s）. The optimum conditions for Cu（Ⅱ） transport are, pH of feed 4.0, 0.25 mol/L H2SO4 in strip phase and 12.4 × 10^-4 mol/L D2EHPA （membrane） in 0.5 μm pore size polytetrafluoroethylene （PTFE） membrane. It has been observed that Cu（Ⅱ） flux across the membrane tends to increase with the concentration of copper ions. Application of the method developed to copper plating bath rinse solutions has been found to be successful in the recovery of Cu（Ⅱ）.

Current study presents the application of chemometric techniques to comprehend the interrelations among sediment variables whilst identifying the possible pollution source at Langat River,*** sediment samples（0-10 cm）were collected at 22 sampling stations and analyzed for total metals(48Cd,29Cu,30Zn,82Pb),pH,redox potential（Eh）,salinity,electrical conductivity（EC）,loss on ignition（LOI）and cation exchange capacity（CEC）.The principal component analysis（PCA）scrutinized the origin of environmental pollution by various anthropogenic and natural activities:four principal components were obtained with 86.34%（5 cm）and88.34%（10 cm）.Standard,forward and backward stepwise discriminant analysis effectively discriminate 2variables（84.06%）indicating high variation of heavy metals accumulation at both *** cluster analysis accounted for high input of Zn and Pb at LA8,LA 10,LA 11 and LA 12 that mergers three（5 cm）and four（10cm）into *** is consistent with the contamination factor（C1）that shows high Cd（LA 1）and Pb（LA 7,LA 8,LA 10,LA 11 and LA 12）contaminations at *** indicate that Pb and Zn are the most bioavailable metals in the sediment with significant positive linear relationship at both sediment ***,this approach is a good indication of environmental pollution status that transfers new findings on the assessment of heavy metals by interpreting large complex datasets and predicting the fate of heavy metals in the sediment.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of administration of sublethal doses of carbaryl on nighttime rat pineal melatonin synthesis in the presence and absence of propranolol, a β-adrenergic receptor antagonist. Two groups of adult male albino rats were administered orally N-methyl-l-naphthylcarbamate (carbaryl) (8. 33mg/kg BW daily in corn oil) for six successive days; another two groups received corn oil *** the last day of carbaryl treatment, half of the animals received an intraperitoneal injection of propranolol (20 mg/kg body weight, one hour before lights off). The other two groups were given a saline injection. Four hours after darkness onset, pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) activities as well as pineal concentrations of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP), serotonin (5HT),5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5HIAA) and pineal and serum melatonin levels were measured. Nocturnal NAT activity was increased due to carbaryl administration but the pesticide was ineffective in stimulating NAT activity in rats treated with *** 5HT was decreased due to carbaryl administration but 5HTP and 5HIAA levels were unaffected. Pineal and serum melatonin levels were decreased due to propranolol treatment. The results indicate that carbaryl may influence pineal NAT activity by a mechanism that involves β-adrenergic neural transmission.

Evaluation of phosphorus bioavailability in El Mex Bay and Lake Mariut sediments

Phosphorus(P) fractions and their bioavailability in the sediments from El Mex Bay and Lake Mariut in Egypt were investigated using different chemical extraction methods. Sodium bicarbonate(NaHC03)extractable P(Olsen-P) was the largest fraction(14.42%), followed by algal available P(AAP)(3.56%),water soluble P(WSP)(0.79%), and readily desorbable P(RDP)(0.06%) for El Mex Bay. While AAP contributed 9.94% to total P in sediments from Lake Mariut, Olsen-P 8.53%, WSP 4.11%, and RDP 0.92%.Summation of the bioavailable P fractions didn’t exceed the sediment quality guidelines, and, therefore, P doesn’t represent a danger to marine organisms. Correlation coefficients showed that no apparent relations between total P(TP) and iron(Fe), aluminum(Al), and calcium(Ca) in the sediments. Furthermore, Fe:P ratio was less than 15 indicting that there was not enough Fe in surface sediments to bind to P at most of the sampling sites. The positive correlation between TP and organic matter(OM) for Lake Mariut and El Mex Bay sediments indicated that the organic matter content of the sediment was a useful predictor of the total phosphorus content. Data from this study constitute a baseline of phosphorus bioavailability in sediments from El Mex Bay and Lake Mariut and could be used as a reference for future studies on the changes of bioavailable and residual phosphorus fractions over time.
