Parkland trees on smallholder farms ameliorate soil physical-chemical properties in the semi-arid area of Tigray,Ethiopia

Proposed agroforestry options should begin with the species that farmers are most familiar with,which would be the native multipurpose trees that have evolved under smallholder farms and socioeconomic *** African birch(Anogeissus leiocarpa(DC.)Guill.&Perr.)and pink jacaranda(Stereospermum kunthianum Cham.)trees are the dominant species in the agroforestry parkland system in the drylands of Tigray,*** farmers highly value these trees for their multifunctional uses including timber,firewood,charcoal,medicine,*** trees also could improve soil ***,the amount of soil physical and chemical properties enhanced by the two species must be determined to maintain the sustainable conservation of the species in the parklands and to scale up to similar agroecological ***,we selected twelve isolated trees,six from each species that had similar dendrometric characteristics and were growing in similar environmental *** divided the canopy cover of each tree into three radial distances:mid-canopy,canopy edge,and canopy gap(control).At each distance,we took soil samples from three different *** collected 216 soil samples(half disturbed and the other half undisturbed)from each canopy position and soil *** density(BD),soil moisture content(SMC),soil organic carbon(SOC),total nitrogen(TN),available phosphorus(AP),available potassium(AK),p H,electrical conductivity(EC),and cation exchange capacity(CEC)were *** revealed that soil physical and chemical properties significantly improved except for soil texture and EC under both species,CEC under ***,and soil p H under ***,all the studied soils were improved under both species canopy as compared with canopy ***,TN,AP,and AK under canopy of these trees were respectively 24.1%,11.1%,55.0%,and 9.3% higher than those soils under *** two parkland agroforestry species significantly enhanced soil fertility near the canopy of top

Dominant woody plant species recognition with a hierarchical model based on multimodal geospatial data for subtropical forests

Since the launch of the Google Earth Engine(GEE)cloud platform in 2010,it has been widely used,leading to a wealth of valuable ***,the potential of GEE for forest resource management has not been fully *** extract dominant woody plant species,GEE combined Sen-tinel-1(S1)and Sentinel-2(S2)data with the addition of the National Forest resources Inventory(NFRI)and topographic data,resulting in a 10 m resolution multimodal geospatial dataset for subtropical forests in southeast *** and texture features,red-edge bands,and vegetation indices of S1 and S2 data were computed.A hierarchical model obtained information on forest distribution and area and the dominant woody plant *** results suggest that combining data sources from the S1 winter and S2 yearly ranges enhances accuracy in forest distribution and area extraction compared to using either data source ***,for dominant woody species recognition,using S1 winter and S2 data across all four seasons was *** terrain factors and removing spatial correlation from NFRI sample points further improved the recognition *** optimal forest extraction achieved an overall accuracy(OA)of 97.4%and a maplevel image classification efficacy(MICE)of 96.7%.OA and MICE were 83.6%and 80.7%for dominant species extraction,*** high accuracy and efficacy values indicate that the hierarchical recognition model based on multimodal remote sensing data performed extremely well for extracting information about dominant woody plant *** the results using the GEE application allows for an intuitive display of forest and species distribution,offering significant convenience for forest resource monitoring.

Tracing suspended and bed sediments during high and low water periods using geochemical characteristics-Case study:Vazrood watershed,northern Iran

Complete and comprehensive information about sediment dynamic and identification of hotspots of sediment production and transport are necessary for understanding the erosion processes and increasing the efficiency of soil and water conservation *** studies used the sediment fingerprint techniques to investigate the contribution of different sources in suspended and bed sediment yield of the ***,the contribution of various land use/land covers in suspended and bed sediment yield for the great Caspian Sea basin is in an aura of ambiguity and the present study was conducted to gather information about an important part of this area in northern Iran,where rangelands are located upstream of Hyrcanian forests and dense agricultural lands are located *** surface soil of different land use/land covers including forest,rangeland,agriculture and streambank lands were sampled in 30 *** and bed sediments were sampled in the watershed outlet in two high and low water *** characteristics of soil and sediment samples containing 59 elements were measured using ICP-OES GBC *** reliable and suitable tracers from 59 elements were then selected using Range test,Kruskal-Wallis and Discriminant Function Analysis,respectively,in FingerPro package of R *** results showed that for suspended sediment,streambank and rangeland had the highest contributions of 86.2%and 47.5%,respectively,in two high and low water *** bed sediment,in two high and low water periods,rangeland and streambank had the highest contributions of 73.8%and 84.4%,*** use change and especially human activities such as agriculture,road construction and development of residential areas along the main river riparian zone has led to a significant increase in suspended and bed sediments.

Land-population-industry based village evolution and its influencing factors in the upper Tuojiang River

With economic development and urbanization in China,the rural settlements have experienced great *** explore the evolution process of rural settlements in terms of land,population and industry can reveal the development law of rural spatial distribution,population structure and industrial economy in different stages and *** the development status and evolution characteristics of villages in the upper Tuojiang River basin in Southwest China in the past 20 years are of significant *** upper Tuojiang River basin includes the main types of terrain found in the Southwest region:mountainous,plains,and hills,exhibiting a certain typicality of geographical *** study took towns and townships at the town-level scale as the basic unit of research,and constructed an evaluation system for village evolution based on'land,population,and industry'.It employed Criteria Importance Through Inter-Criteria Correlation(CRITIC)analysis to examine the characteristics of village evolution in the area from 2000 to 2020,and used geographic detector analysis to identify the leading factors affecting village *** results show that:(1)From 2000 to 2010,villages in the upper Tuojiang River basin experienced significant changes,and the pace of these transformations slowed from 2010 to 2020.(2)From a comprehensive perspective,from 2000 to 2020,villages in hilly areas show a decline,while villages in plain areas near the city center show a positive urbanization development.(3)Road accessibility and distance from the city center are the main factors that explain the spatial differentiation of village evolution degree in the study *** study elucidates the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of villages in the upper Tuojiang River basin and identifies the primary factors contributing to their changes,which will provide a reference for investigating the development of rural areas in different terrains of Southwest China.

Cardiac energy metabolism disorder mediated by energy substrate imbalance and mitochondrial damage upon tebuconazole exposure

Tebuconazole exposure has been described as an increasing hazard to human *** increasing number of recent studies have shown a positive association between tebuconazole exposure and cardiovascular disease risk,which is characterized by the reduction of adenosine triphosphate(ATP)***,researches on the damage of tebuconazole exposure to energy metabolism and the related molecular mechanisms are *** the present study,male C57BL/6 mice were treated with tebuconazole at different low concentrations for 4 *** results indicated that tebuconazole could accumulate in the heart and further induce the decrease of ATP content in the mouse ***,tebuconazole induced an obvious shift in substrate utilization of fatty acid and glucose by disrupting their corresponding transporters(GLUT1,GLUT4,CD36,FABP3 and FATP1)expression,and significantly repressed the expression of mitochondrial biogenesis(Gabpa and Tfam)and oxidative phosphorylation(CS,Ndufa4,Sdhb,Cox5a and Atp5b)related genes in a dosedependent *** investigation revealed that these alterations were related to the IRS1/AKT and PPARγ/RXRα*** findings contribute to a better understanding of triazole fungicide-induced cardiovascular disease by revealing the key indicators associated with this phenomenon.

Unveiling the performance of a novel alkalizing bacterium Enterobacter ***-2 in immobilization of available Cd

A novel alkalizing strain Enterobacter ***-2 that could resist 400 mg/L Cd was isolated from Cd-contaminated soil,which immobilized 96.05%Cd^(2+)from *** distribution analysis demonstrated that more than half of the Cd^(2+)was converted into extracellular precipitated Cd through mobilization of the alkali-producing mechanism by the strain LYX-2,achieving the high immobilization efficiency of Cd^(2+).Biosorption experiments revealed that strain LYX-2 had superior biosorption capacity of 48.28 mg/g for *** experiments with Brassica rapa *** performed with and without strain *** to control,15.92%bioavailable Cd was converted to non-bioavailable Cd and Cd content in aboveground vegetables was decreased by 37.10%with addition of strain *** Cd was mainly immobilized through extracellular precipitation,cell-surface biosorption and intracellular accumulation of strain LYX-2,which was investigated through Cd distribution,Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy(SEM-EDS),Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FT-IR),X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS)and Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM)*** addition,the application of strain LYX-2 significantly promoted the growth of vegetables about *** results indicated that highly Cd-resistant alkalizing strain LYX-2,as a novel microbial passivator,had excellent ability and reuse value to achieve the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil coupled with safe production of vegetables simultaneously.

Tracking of horizontal alignment of the long and large diameter uncharged hole in NATM tunnel

The long and large diameter uncharged hole boring(LLB)method is a cut blasting method that minimizes blast-induced vibrations by creating long and large diameter uncharged holes at the excavation face of tunnels prior to tunnel *** in this method typically uses a 50 m long with a 382 mm diameter hammer bit in the horizontal direction at the tunnel ***,the significant weight and uni-directional rotation of the rod head,as well as variables such as geological characteristics,machine conditions,and inexperienced operators result in significant deviation from the target borehole alignment that hinders the vibration-dampening effect of the uncharged ***,since there is no method to verify the alignment of the boreholes until main tunnel construction,borehole misalignment is often not discovered until weeks after construction,which requires tunnel construction to cease until the equipment can be remobilized and an additional borehole be created,causing significant delays and increased costs for the entire tunnel *** this study,the borehole alignment tracking and ground exploration system(BGS)is developed to predict and monitor the quality and alignment of boreholes for cut blasting methods such as the LLB methods immediately after *** BGS was subsequently tested at a subway construction site to evaluate its performance in the *** measurements yielded by the BGS were compared with manually measured boring positions at every 5 m along the *** the BGS showed a maximum deviation of approximately 12%at a local point where the hole surface was relatively rough,the accuracy for the final boring position was approximately 97%,demonstrating excellent precision of the alignment tracking *** BGS demonstrates excellent performance in predicting ground conditions and the boring quality of a cut hole immediately after drilling,and shows promise in various other applications for monitoring borehole alignment.

Channel erosion and its impact on environmental flow of riparian habitat in the Middle Yangtze River

Evaluating environmental flow(EF)is pivotal for conserving and restoring riverine ***,prevalent EF evaluations presume that a river reach's hydraulic conditions are exclusively governed by inflow discharge,presupposing a state of equilibrium in the river *** presumption narrows the scope of EF evaluations in expansive alluvial rivers like the Middle Yangtze River(MYR),characterized by marked channel *** we show the profound channel erosion process and its impact on EF requirements for riparian habitats within the *** research unveils that:(i)pronounced erosion has led to a mean reduction of 1.0-2.7 m in the riverbed across four sub-reaches of the MYR;(ii)notwithstanding a 37-107%increase in minimal discharges post the Three Gorges Project,the lowest river stages at some hydrometric stations diminished owing to bed erosion,signifying a notable transformation in MYR's hydraulic dynamics;(iii)a discernible rightward shift in the correlation curve between the weighted useable area and discharge from 2002 to 2020 in a specific sub-reach of the MYR,instigated by alterations in hydraulic conditions,necessitated an increase of 1500e2600 m^(3)s^(-1)in the required EF for the sub-reach;(iv)it is deduced that macroinvertebrate biomass rapidly decreases as the flow entrains the riverbed substrate,with the maximum survivable velocity for macroinvertebrates being contingent on their entrainment *** findings highlight the importance of incorporating channel morphological changes in devising conservation strategies for the MYR ecosystem.

Distribution and bioavailability of mercury in size-fractioned atmospheric particles around an ultra-low emission power plant in Southwest China

Ultra-low emission(ULE)technology retrofits significantly impact the particulate-bound mercury(Hg)emissions from coal-fired power plants(CFPPs);however,the distribution and bioavailability of Hg in size-fractioned particulate matter(PM)around the ULE-retrofitted CF-PPs are less ***,total Hg and its chemical speciation in TSP(total suspended particles),PM_(10)(aerodynamic particle diameter≤10μm)and PM_(2.5)(aerodynamic particle diameter≤2.5μm)around a ULE-retrofitted CFPP in Guizhou Province were *** PM_(2.5)concentration was higher around this ULE-retrofitted CFPP than that in the intra-regional urban cities,and it had higher mass Hg concentration than other sizefractioned *** Hg concentrations in PM had multifarious sources including CFPP,vehicle exhaust and biomass combustion,while they were significantly higher in autumn and winter than those in other seasons(P40%).Mass concentrations of exchangeable,HCl-soluble,elemental,and residual Hg in PM_(2.5)were higher than those in other size-fractioned PM,and were markedly elevated in autumn and winter(P<0.05).In PM_(2.5),HCl-soluble Hg presented a significantly positive relationship with elemental Hg(P<0.05),while residual Hg showed the significantly positive relationships with HCl-soluble Hg and elemental Hg(P<0.01).Overall,these results suggested that atmospheric PM-bound Hg around the ULE-retrofitted CFPP tends to accumulate in finer PM,and has higher bioavailable fractions,while has potential transformation between chemical speciation.

Biophotoelectrochemistry for the treatment of emerging contaminants

Emerging contaminants(ECs) of significant concern are widely distributed throughout the environment due to various industrial practices and human activities. Given the alarming ecological threats and potential risks that ECs pose to human health and aquatic life, even at trace concentrations, it is imperative to develop innovative technologies to effectively address these challenges. The biophotoelectrochemistry(BPEC) system, which integrates microbial cells with photosensitizers for solar-tochemical conversion, holds great potential as an efficient strategy for the removal of ECs. In this review, we provide new insights into the BPEC system for the ECs treatment by systematically summarizing the classification, sources, and environmental occurrence of ECs. Additionally, we explore the research progress and degradation mechanisms in ECs removal with ***, the current challenges and future perspectives for the applications of the BPEC system in the ECs treatment are *** review aims to promote the development of BPEC technology for ECs treatment, offering a promising prospect for environmental remediation, circular economy, and clean-energy production.
