Orbital pacing and secular evolution of lake-level changes reconstructed by sedimentary noise modeling during the Early Jurassic icehouses-(super)greenhouses

Lake-level changes can significantly affect paleoenvironmental evolution,resource occurrence,terrestrial carbon budget,and biodiversity in continental basins.Climate is one of the most critical factors controlling lake-level changes.Paleoclimate of the Early Jurassic has been evidenced by oscillating icehouses to(super)greenhouses with interrupted intermittent extreme climatic events(hyperthermal and cooling),e.g.,the Toarcian oceanic anoxic event(~183 Ma)and the late Pliensbachian cooling event(~185 Ma).Lake-level evolution and hydrologic cycling on Earth’s surface during the Early Jurassic icehouses-to-(super)greenhouses are thus far poorly understood due to a lack of continuous high-resolution nonmarine evidence.Here we present a super-long nonmarine lake level record for this pivotal interval from the early Pliensbachian to Toarcian by sedimentary noise modeling,and construct a 16.7-Myr-long astronomical time scale(174.2 Ma to 190.9 Ma)based on cyclostratigraphy analysis of rock color datasets(CIE b*)of the Qaidam Basin.Our results document lake-level oscillations on a 5-to 10-million-year(Myr)scale which shows a pronounced correlation with long-term climate variation and extreme climatic events,and 1-to 2.5-Myr-scale lake-level changes that are prominently paced by the 2.4-Myr long-eccentricity forcing and the 1.2-Myr obliquity forcing.At the Pliensbachian Stage,the 1.2-Myr-scale lake-level changes are in phase with the coeval sealevel variations.Orbitally forced growth and decay of the ephemeral or permanent ice sheets in polar regions are interpreted to control the synchronous ups-and-downs of continental lake level and global sea level.However,during the Toarcian ice-free greenhouses to(super)greenhouses,the 1.2-Myr-scale lake-level variations show an anti-phase relationship with global sea level,indicating a‘seesaw’interaction between continental reservoirs(lakes and groundwater)and global oceans.The 2.4-Myr longeccentricity cycles mainly regulate variations of lake level and sea level by controlling the

Direct air capture(DAC)has attracted increasing interest and investment over the past few years.There are a fast-growing number of companies that entered the field and demonstrated DAC carbon removal setups and potential.However,current DAC methods are still based on solid absorbents or alkali solutions approaches which have low capture efficiency and low energy efficiency.This highlight proposed a promising CO_(2) capture technology,an electric energy driven closed-loop system for the direct removal of CO_(2) from ambient air which are based on two individual technologies:Polyam-N-Cu hybrid system promoted CO_(2) capture with ocean as anthropogenic CO_(2) sink and a chloride-mediated electrochemical pH swing system to remove CO_(2) from oceanwater.

A Systematic Analysis of Systems Approach and Flood Risk Management Research:Trends,Gaps,and Opportunities

Flooding is a global threat,necessitating a comprehensive management approach.Due to the complexity of managing flood hazards and risks,researchers have advocated for holistic,comprehensive,and integrated approaches.This study,employing a systems thinking perspective,assessed global flood risk management research trends,gaps,and opportunities using132 published documents in BibTeX format.A systematic review of downloaded documents from the Scopus and Web of Science databases revealed slow progress of approximately 11.61% annual growth in applying systems thinking and its concomitant approaches to understanding global flood risk management over the past two decades compared to other fields like water resource management and business management systems.A significant gap exists in the application of systems thinking methodologies to flood risk management research between developed and developing countries,particularly in Africa,highlighting the urgency of reoriented research and policy efforts.The application gaps of the study methodology are linked to challenges outlined in existing literature,such as issues related to technical expertise and resource constraints.This study advocates a shift from linear to holistic approaches in flood risk management,aligned with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2023 and the Sustainable Development Goals.Collaboration among researchers,institutions,and countries is essential to address this global challenge effectively.

Coal-based activated carbon prepared by H2O activation process for supercapacitors using response surface optimization method

The scalable production of high grade activated carbon from abundant coal for supercapacitors application is an efficient way to achieve high value-added utilization of coal sources.However,this technology is challenging due to lack of comprehensive understanding on the mechanism of activation process and effect of external factors.In this paper,the effect of activating temperature and time on the specific capacitance of coal-based activated carbon prepared by H2O steam activation was studied using the response surface method.Under optimal conditions,coal-based activated carbon exhibits the largest specific capacitance of 194.35 F·g^(−1),thanks to the appropriate pore/surface structure and defect degree.Density functional theory calculations explain in detail the mechanism of contraction of aromatic rings and overflow of H2 and CO during the activation.Meanwhile,oxygen-containing functional groups are introduced,contributing to the pseudocapacitance property of coal-based activated carbon.This mechanism of reactions between aromatic carbon and H2O vapor provides understanding on the role of water during coal processing at the molecular level,offering great potential to regulate product distribution and predict rate of pore generation.This insight would contribute to the advancement of other coal processing technology such as gasification.

Combinations of electron and proton donors in transition-metal complex mediated nitrogen reduction reactions

Nitrogen fixation is a complex process involving the transfer of six electrons and protons.Diverging from the conventional Haber-Bosch process,which relies on hydrogen(H_(2))to provide both electrons and protons to reduce nitrogen(N_(2)),homogeneous transition metal complex-catalyzed N_(2)reduction reactions(NRR)employ an array of electron and proton donors or even electron donors combined with silanes.As the synthesis of diverse catalytic progress,the categories of donors have seen rapid expansion.However,existing literature only provides summaries regarding the metal,ligands,and mechanism.Despite the significance of electron and proton donor combinations in nitrogen reduction reactions,no literature has thoroughly reviewed this aspect.Therefore,we hereby compiled a comprehensive list of commonly used reagents in N_(2)reduction and classified them according to their specific donor combinations.This review presents clear and organized information about these combinations,along with a summary of their general performance trend in NRR with related catalysts.Finally,we conclude the discussion by highlighting key points for researchers to consider when selecting catalysts and donor combinations,with the ultimate goal of advancing the field of nitrogen fixation.

Climate change is a pressing global concern with far-reaching consequences that vary across sectors.Addressing the adverse impacts of climate change on various sectors is a challenging issue faced by countries worldwide,including China.It is imperative for China to address climate change to foster sustainable development and make meaningful contributions to global climate mitigation efforts.This paper presented a comprehensive analysis of the impacts of climate change on the electricity,agriculture,and industry sectors,which together account for over 80%of the greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions in China.Additionally,the strategies employed by these sectors to address climate change were reviewed,and potential future developments were explored.This review article could shine light on climate change practices and evidence-based policies aimed at addressing climate-related challenges across various sectors in China.

Biological soil crusts and their potential applications in the sand land over Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is now experiencing ecological degradation risks as a result of climate change and human activities.The alpine grassland ecology in permafrost zones is fragile and susceptible to deterioration due to its high altitude,low temperature,and limited oxygen,which complicates the repair of damaged land.Biological soil crusts(BSCs)are crucial for land restoration in plateau regions because they can thrive in harsh conditions and have environmentally beneficial traits.Inoculated biological soil crust(IBSC)has shown success in low-altitude desert regions,but may not be easily duplicated to the plateau environment.Therefore,it is essential to do a comprehensive and multifaceted analysis of the basic theoretical comprehension and practical application of BSCs on the Tibetan Plateau.This review article aims to provide a brief summary of the ecological significance and the mechanisms related to the creation,growth,and progression of BSCs.It discusses the techniques used for cultivating BSCs in laboratories and using them in the field,focusing on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau circumstance.We thoroughly discussed the potential and the required paths for further studies.This study may be used as a basis for selecting suitable microbial strains and accompanying supplemental actions for implementing IBSCs in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Highly dispersive tetrahedral vanadium species on pure silica ZSM-12 zeolite boosting the selective oxidation of cyclohexane into cyclohexanone

The selective oxidation of cyclohexane is a promising green route for the production of KA oil(cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone),but remains a huge challenge to design high-performing heterogeneous catalysts under mild conditions.Herein,a pure silica ZSM-12(MTW topology)zeolite was applied as the support to immobilize highly dispersive tetrahedrally coordinated vanadium(V)species and the constructed catalyst 1%V/SZ-12 exhibited high efficiency in the fast and selective oxidation of cyclohexane into cyclohexanone with H2O2.The reaction completed within 30 s,affording the selectivity of 99%towards cyclohexanone and the extremely high turnover frequency(TOF)of 5,891 h^(-1).1%V/SZ-12 was facilely reused with stable activity and feasibly extended to the oxidation of various cyclohexane derivatives.The one-dimensional 12-membered ring microchannels contributed to the formation and accessibility of tetrahedrally coordinated high valent V5+species as the robust active centers,which activated H2O2to generate V–O–O·,the active oxygen species for the electrophilic attack on cyclohexane to produce cyclohexanone as the sole product.
