An expert system prototype for fibre-reinforced plastic matrix (FRP) composite material design, ESFRP, has been developed. The system consists of seven main functional parts: a general inference eng.ne, a set of knowledge bases, a material properties algorithm base, an explanation eng.ne, various data bases, several function models and the user interface. The ESFRP can simulate human experts to make design scheme for fibre-reinforced plastics design, FRP layered plates design and FRP typical eng.neering components design. It can also predict the material properties and make streng.h analysis according to the micro and macro mechanics of composite materials. A satisfied result can be gained through the reiterative design.

The effects of laser hardening parameters such as beam power, beam diameter and scanning rate on microstructure and hardness of 9CrSi steel were investigated. The microstructure of the surface layer of 9CrSi steel was changed from pearlite to martensite, retained austenite and carbide by laser hardening. The depth of the hardened layer increased with increasing laser energy density and the surface hardeness increased by 3-5 times as high as the untreated steel. The laser hardened surface had good wear resistance due to martensite and carbide in the surface layer. The wear mode at low speed was abrasive, while the wear mode at high speed was adhesive.

The progressive fatigue damage of a material is closely related to the whole population of cracks on its surface. In order to understand which parameter is a more useful indicator of fatigue damage, rotatory bending fatigue tests were carried out using smooth specimens of medium-carbon steel. The behavior of short crack propagation during fatigue was examined and a new parameter total crack area was suggested. The aim of this paper is to extend the research on fatigue damage in the already studied steel and to study how these damage parameters are correlated with the process of fatigue damage in order to evaluate the effectiveness of damage detection methods.

Electro-hydraulic impulse water-air mixing jet by which the quality of metal materials can be improved is described in this paper. The experimental results proved that the hardness and the micro-hardness of the surface layer of metal materials can be improved with this method, for example, the microhardness of CrWMn can be increased by 35.62 percent.

In this article, laser transformation hardening of HT250 material by high speed axis flow CO2 laser was investigated for first time in China. Appropriate laser hardening parameters, such as laser energy power P(W), laser scanning rate V(m/min), were optimized through a number of experiments. The effect of the mentioned parameters on the hardened zone, including its case depth, microhardness distributions etc., were analyzed. Through the factual experiments, it is proved that axial flow CO2laser, which commonly outputs low mode laser beam, can also treat materials as long as the treating parameters used are rational. During the experiments, the surface qualities of some specimens treated by some parameters were found to be enhanced, which does not coincide with the former results. Furthermore in the article, the abnormal phenomenon observed in the experiments is discussed. According to the experimental results, the relationship between laser power density q and scanning rate V is shown in a curve and the corresponding formulation, which have been proved to be valuable for choosing the parameters of laser transformation hardening by axial flow CO2 lasers, was also given.

A357 alloy was modified with lanthanum -rich mischmetal, and modification effects of the mischmetal on its as-cast and heat-treated structures, mechanical properties and hydrogen content were investigated and compared with that of strontium metal. It is shown that the modification effect of La-rich mischmetal is better than that of strontium in the aspects of refining eutectic silicon, ejecting hydrogen from the melt and improving comprehensive mechanical properties of the alloy. Therefore Al-Si-Mg alloy with high streng.h and improved toughness can be obtained by modification with La-rich mischmetal.

The modifying effect of rare earth (RE) oxide on inclusions in hardfacing metals of medium-high carbon steel was investigated by means of thermodynamics. The thermodynamic analysis for inclusion formation shows that RE oxide can be reduced to RE element by carbon, then the RE element can react with oxygen and sulfur to form the RE oxide, RE sulfide and RE oxide-sulfide in hardfacing molten pool. The deoxidization and the desulphurization can be carried out and the liquid metal can be purified. In addition, RE oxide can also react with sulfur to form RE oxide-sulfide directly. Therefore, the harmful effect of sulfur can be decreased.

Electroless Ni-Fe-P alloys in an alkaline bath were plated. The effects of deposition parameters on the plating rate and the coating composition were examined. The weight loss test and the anodic polarization measurement of the deposits in 3.5 wt pct NaCI solution (pH7.0) showed that the deposits with the mole ratio of NiS04/FeSO4 being 0.07:0.03, pH8.0 and 7.5 possess better corrosion resistance than that of the other deposits and the Ni-Fe-P deposits did not form passive films in this environment. In 5.0 wt pct NaOH solution, the Ni-Fe-P deposits have better corrosion resistance and formed passive films.
