We describe the first case of dicephalism in a caecilian larva, Ichthyophis bannanicus, from southeastern Guangxi, China. The two heads of the larva are united at the anterior one-third of the body. It is measured as： body mass 0.6 g, total length 42.4 mm, body width at middle 5.4 ram, head length 2.1 mm, head width 2.5 mm, snout length 1.5 mm, internarial distance 0.9 mm, and interorbital distance 1.7 ram. Compared to normal conspecific larvae, it is smaller except for the internarial distance, body mass and body width at midbody.

Many studies have demonstrated that some of the activities of people can disturb nesting and foraging birds, particularly along coasts and estuaries. Some managers respond to human disturbance of sensitive species by closing beaches, but most have stewards monitor and restrict access to beaches or portions of beaches. Yet little is known about the type of visitor or their perceptions of beach stewards. This paper explores the general acceptance of beach stewards and their role in conservation of red knots (Calidris canutus rufa), other shorebirds, and horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) along the Delaware Bay (New Jersey) beaches by interviewing 279 visitors during the stopover period. While most people came to see the shorebird and horseshoe crab spectacle (60%), many came for the scenery, tranquility, and recreation. Just over half of the people interviewed said that the stewards were helpful (58%), although most of those that answered this question later said that they provided conservation value (86%), but only 40% said they relied on the stewards for information. On a Likert rating scale of 1 to 5 (the highest value), the mean rating for whether it was important for stewards to be present was 3.87 ± 0.09, and the rating for the presence of stewards who can provide information was 3.71 ± 0.11. Camellia huana is an endangered species with a narrow distribution in limestone hills of northern Guangxi and southern Guizhou provinces,*** used one chloroplast DNA(cpDNA)fragment and 12 pairs of microsatellite(simple sequence repeat;SSR)markers to assess the genetic diversity and structure of 12 *** populations.A total of 99 alleles were detected for 12 polymorphic loci,and eight haplotypes and nine polymorphic sites were detected within 5200 bp of *** populations showed a low level of genetic diversity(n=8,Hd=0.759,Pi=0.00042 for cpDNA,NA=3.931,HE=0.466 for SSRs),but high genetic differentiation between populations(FST=0.2159 for SSRs,FST=0.9318 for cpDNA).This can be attributed to the narrow distribution and limestone habitat of *** analysis divided natural *** populations into two groups,consistent with their geographical ***,we suggest that five natural *** populations should be split into two units to be managed effectively.

Nutrient status and pollution levels are the main factors affecting soil *** nutrient status and pollution levels in five areas,an unexplored mine area(UA),an explored mine area(EA),a tailings area(TA),a reclamation area(RA)and an agricultural area(AA),around the Pingle manganese mine in Guangxi,China,were assessed in this *** results showed that the average total phosphorus in these five areas ranged from 1.05 to 1.57 mg/kg,corresponding to grades of extremely high and *** average total nitrogen values were 0.19,0.69,0.93,1.24 and 1.67 mg/kg in EA,TA,RA,UA and AA,corresponding to grades of very low,low,medium-low,medium-high and medium-high,*** average organic matter values were 12.78,8.92,22.77,21.29 and 29.11 mg/kg in EA,TA,RA,UA and AA,which corresponded to grades of medium-low,low,medium-high,medium-high and medium-high,*** these results indicated that the total phosphorus was sufficient in these areas,while the total nitrogen and organic matter were insufficient in EA,TA and *** available concentrations of Mn and Zn corresponded to the intermediate grade,while the values for Cu corresponded to the very low grade;these might be another factor restricting ecological *** and ecological risk assessments based on the single contamination index,Nemerow multi-factor index and potential ecological risk index showed that the five tested areas around the Mn mine were considered heavily polluted and presented high ecological *** and Cd were the dominant pollutants.

A New species of the Genus Tylototriton(Amphibia: Urodela: Salamandridae) from Eastern Himalaya

A new species of the genus Tylototriton is described from eastern Himalaya based on molecular and morphological comparisons. The new species is diagnosable from the closely-related species by having light brown colouration in dorsal region in life, flat and blunt snout, greatly separated dorsolateral bony ridges on head and straightthick tailfin. In addition to head morphology, the new species is also morphologically distinguishable from its closelyrelated species Tylototriton shanorum by having 16 dorsal warts and average smaller Snout Vent Length（SVL）.

Oviparous female reptiles select nesting sites with optimal ecological factors that contribute to egg development. Chinese alligator （Alligator sinensis）, an oviparous reptile, is a critically endangered crocodilian with temperature-dependent sex determination. Research on its nesting behavior may facilitate the protection of this species. In this study, we monitored nesting behavior over eight years. We compared selected frequency of nest sites, distance from nest site to water, height from nest site top to the water surface, distance from nest site to human activity region, and canopy density between nest sites on the island and bank. The results showed that 45 nest sites were used by female alligators over eight years and each site was selected from one to 10 times. The selected frequency of nest site occurrence on the island was higher than that on the bank （P 〈 0.001）. We observed that 88% of the individual alligators （15/17） showed different degrees of nest site fidelity. However, Chinese alligators might not always be loyal to only one nest site because of environmental changes or interspecific competition at nest sites. Our findings suggest that female alligators prefer to nest at island, which might be because of the nests on the island had a higher canopy density （P = 0.010） and were further from the human activity region （P 〈 0.001） than those on the bank did. It would be beneficial to reduce human activities during the breeding season and protect the vegetation of Chinese alligator habitats in the future.

Artificial breeding is an important project to protect,recover and reintroduce endangered *** of the population's genetic diversity at functional loci is important for the establishment of effective captive breeding *** major histocompatibility complex(MHC) genes are ideal candidate genetic markers to inform planned breeding,due to their high levels of polymorphism and importance in the main immune coding region of the vertebrate *** this study,we constructed BAC-based contigs and isolated six functional MHC class Ⅰ genes from the giant panda(Ailuropoda melanoleuca),which we designated Aime-C,Aime-F,Aime-I,Aime-K,Aime-L and *** of the tissue expression patterns and full-length cDNA sequences of these class I genes revealed that Aime-C,-F,-I and-L could be considered classical class Ⅰ loci,due to their extensive expression patterns and normal exonic *** contrast,Aime-K and-1906 appeared to be nonclassical genes based on their tissue-specific expression patterns and the presence of an abnormal exon 7 in both *** established techniques for genotyping exons 2 and 3 of the classical loci using locus-specific single strand conformation polymorphism(SSCP) and sequence *** the Chengdu captive population,we identified one monomorphic locus(Aime-F) and three polymorphic loci with different numbers of alleles(4/4/4 exon 2 alleles at Aime-C/I/L and 6/5/5 exon 3 alleles at Aime-C/I/L).The distributions of the Aime-C,-I and-L alleles among members of different families were in good agreement with the known pedigree relationships,suggesting that the genotyping results are ***,the MHC-I genotyping techniques established in this study may provide a powerful tool for the future design of scientific breeding or release/reintroduction programs.

Mating behavior and parturition are important components in the life history of any species. The endangered Chinese crocodile lizard(Shinisaurus crocodilurus) is suffering dramatic population decreases in the wild. Successful captive breeding can provide individuals to be reintroduced into their natural habitat and help to restore the wild populations. Studying the mating behavior and parturition of these lizards in captivity will enable us understand how is this ancient species reproduction and optimize artificial reproduction protocol. We studied the mating behavior and parturition of Chinese crocodile lizards in captivity using video recordings at the Daguishan National Nature Reserve, China, from 2015 to 2017. We analyzed pre-copulation and copulation, which occurred in mid-March to late May from all studied years. Pre-copulation and copulation lasted on average 7.51(n=11) and 27.45(n=11) minutes, respectively. We found that large-bodied male lizards have longer copulation periods, a pattern seen in other lizard species. In the mating event, males always initiated sex, while the females were passive. The duration of parturition lasted 153.8 ± 26.8(n=46) minutes, and larger females had heavier clutches. In addition, even though Chinese crocodile lizards represent an ancient lizard clade with primitive characteristics, they still abide by the reproduction patterns seen in most other lizard species.
