Time-sensitive prediction of NO_(2) concentration in China using an ensemble machine learning model from multi-source data

Nitrogen dioxide(NO_(2))poses a critical potential risk to environmental quality and public health.A reliable machine learning(ML)forecasting framework will be useful to provide valuable information to support government *** on the data from1609 air quality monitors across China from 2014-2020,this study designed an ensemble ML model by integrating multiple types of spatial-temporal variables and three sub-models for time-sensitive prediction over a wide *** ensemble ML model incorporates a residual connection to the gated recurrent unit(GRU)network and adopts the advantage of Transformer,extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost)and GRU with residual connection network,resulting in a 4.1%±1.0%lower root mean square error over XGBoost for the test *** ensemble model shows great prediction performance,with coefficient of determination of 0.91,0.86,and 0.77 for 1-hr,3-hr,and 24-hr averages for the test results,*** particular,this model has achieved excellent performance with low spatial uncertainty in Central,East,and North China,the major site-dense *** the interpretability analysis based on the Shapley value for different temporal resolutions,we found that the contribution of atmospheric chemical processes is more important for hourly predictions compared with the daily scale predictions,while the impact of meteorological conditions would be ever-prominent for the *** with existing models for different spatiotemporal scales,the present model can be implemented at any air quality monitoring station across China to facilitate achieving rapid and dependable forecast of NO_(2),which will help developing effective control policies.

Background The prevalence of understory removal and anthropogenic nitrogen(N) deposition has significantly altered the ecological processes of forest ecosystems at both regional and global scales. However, it remains a pressing challenge to understand how N deposition and understory removal affect leaf nutrient dynamics, nutrient resorption, litter decomposition, and their linkages for better managing forest ecosystems under nutrient imbalances induced by N enrichment. To address this research gap, a field manipulation experiment was carried out in a subtropical Cunninghamia lanceolata plantation with four treatments including: control(CK), canopy N addition(CN), understory removal(UR), and canopy N addition plus understory removal(CN × UR). Green and senesced leaf N and phosphorus(P) concentrations, N and P resorption efficiencies, litter decomposition, and their correlations were *** The results revealed that the average N concentrations of green early and late leaves in UR were increased by 6.61 and 18.89% compared to CK. UR had the highest whereas CN had the lowest P concentrations in green leaves across the two sampling seasons. Following this, UR, leaf type, season, and their interactions significantly affected leaf N, P, and N:P(P < 0.05). The highest leaf N resorption(32.68%) and P resorption efficiencies(63.96%) were recorded in UR. Litter decomposition was significantly retarded in UR(P < 0.01) relative to CN. The regression analysis demonstrated that leaf nutrient status was significantly interconnected with leaf nutrient resorption efficiencies. Climate change alters snowpack evolution,which in turn influences the likelihood of snow avalanches and flood *** lack of systemic observational data on key snow characteristics in high mountains remains a scientific challenge in terms of systematically elucidating the dynamic chain of variations in climate-snowpack-snow *** restricts our understanding and poses challenges in the prediction of snow-related disaster *** such,this study analysed the variations of temperature and snowfall and the physical characteristics of snowpacks based on ground-based observations from the Kunse River Valley situated in the Tianshan Mountains from 1967 to *** results reveal that the temperature increased significantly by 0.32°C per decade(p<0.01)during the snow season,along with more extreme snowfall *** snow-cover duration was observed to have been shortened by 4.77 d per decade(p<0.01)from 1967 to 2021,which is characterised by later snow-cover onset and earlier ***,average and maximum snow depths increased along with an increase in peak snow water equivalent,thus indicating a higher frequency of extremely scarce or abundant snow *** low snowpack temperature gradient and earlier snowmelt dates in spring lead to earlier occurrences of snowmelt floods and wet *** the risks of these events increase,they pose greater threats to farmlands,road transportation,water-electricity infrastructure and several other human ***,these insights are critical for providing vital information that can deepen our understanding of the impact of climate change on snowpack characteristics and improve management strategies for snow-related disaster prevention and mitigation.

Additives could improve composting performance and reduce gaseous emission,but few studies have explored the synergistic of additives on H_(2)S emission and compost *** research aims to make an investigation about the effects of chemical additives and mature compost on H_(2)S emission and compost maturity of kitchen waste *** results showed that additives increased the germination index value and H_(2)S emission reduction over 15 days and the treatment with both chemical additives and mature compost achieved highest germination index value and H_(2)S emission reduction(85%).Except for the treatment with only chemical additives,the total sulfur content increased during the kitchen waste *** proportion of effective sulfur was higher with the addition of chemical additives,compared with other *** relative abundance of H_(2)S-formation bacterial(Desulfovibrio)was reduced and the relative abundance of bacterial(Pseudomonas and Paracoccus),which could convert sulfur-containing substances and H_(2)S to sulfate was improved with *** the composting process with both chemical additives and mature compost,the relative abundance of Desulfovibrio was lowest,while the relative abundance of Pseudomonas and Paracoccus was *** together,the chemical additives and mature compost achieved H_(2)S emission reduction by regulating the dynamics of microbial community.

Passive sampling technology has good application prospects for monitoring trace pollutants in aquatic *** research on the sampling mechanism of this technology is essential to improve the measurement accuracy and extend the application scope of this *** this study,adsorption and permeation experiments were performed to investigate the sorption and mass transfer properties of five chiral pharmaceuticals at the enantiomeric level on polyethersulfone(PES)and polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)membranes used in a polar organic chemical integrative *** adsorption experiments showed that the PES membrane had an adsorption phenomenon for most selected pollutants and an insignificant sorption behavior was observed for all selected pharmaceuticals on the PTFE membrane except for R(S)-*** diffusion coefficients of selected pharmaceuticals onto the PTFE membrane were approximately one order of magnitude higher than those onto the PES *** permeation experiment indicated that under different hydraulic conditions,the change of the relative pollutant concentration through the PTFE membrane for the composite pollutant system was more obvious than that for the single pollutant system,and mass transfer hysteresis exists for both contaminant systems through PES *** the first-order equation or 3-component model to estimate the overall mass transfer coefficients,the results showed that the overall mass transfer coefficient values of pollutants in the composite pollutant system onto both membranes were higher than those in the single pollutant *** parameter was mainly influenced by the synergistic effects of the multi-analyte interaction and diminished water boundary layers during the mass transfer process.

Freshwater microplastic pollution is an urgent issue of global concern,and research on the distribution in reservoirs is *** investigated the microplastic pollution levels in wet sediments collected from the Three Gorges Reservoir,the largest reservoir of *** show that microplastics were ubiquitous in the sediments of the Three Gorges Reservoir,and their abundance ranged from 59 to 276 pp/kg(plastic particles per kg,dry weight).Economic development and total population were important factors affecting the spatial heterogeneity of microplastic abundance,and the contribution of large cities along the reservoir to microplastic pollution should be paid with more *** microplastics were the most abundant type of microplastic particles in reservoir sediments,whereas polystyrene,polypropylene,and polyamide were the main types of *** apparent spatial heterogeneity in morphology and color of microplastics is attributed to different anthropogenic or landbased pollution ***,the accumulation of microplastics near the inlet of tributaries reflects the role of potential contributors of *** importantly,multiple bisphenols(BPs)and heavy metals detected at the microplastic surfaces indicate that microplastics can act as carriers of these pollutants in the environment in the same way as sediments did,which may alter the environmental fate and toxicity of these ***,we conclude that the Three Gorges Reservoir had been contaminated with microplastics,which posed a stress risk for organisms who ingest them along with their associated pollutants(BPs,heavy metals).

Vocal communication plays an important role in survival,reproduction,and animal social *** and mammals produce com-plex vocal sequence to convey context-dependent *** are conspicuous features of the behavior of most anuran species(frogs and toads),and males usually alter their calling strategies according to ecological context to improve the attractiveness/***,very few studies have focused on the variation of vocal sequence in *** the present study,we used both conventional method and network analysis to investigate the context-dependent vocal repertoire,vocal sequence,and call network structure in serrate-legged small treefrogs Kurixalus *** found that male *** modified their vocal sequence by switching to different call types and increasing repertoire size in the presence of a competitive ***,compared with before and after the playback of advertisement calls,males emited fewer advertisement calls,but more aggressive calls,encounter calls,and compound calls during the playback *** analysis revealed that the mean degree,mean closeness,and mean betweenness of the call networks significantly decreased during the playback period,which resulted in lower *** addition,the increased proportion of one-way motifs and average path length also indicated that the connectivity of the call network decreased in competitive ***,the vocal sequence of *** did not display a clear small-world network structure,regardless of *** study presents a paradigm to apply network analysis to vocal sequence in anurans and has important implications for understanding the evolution and function of sequence patterns.
