An innovative classification system for ranking the biological effects of marine aromatic hydrocarbons based on fish embryotoxicity

Petroleum hydrocarbon pollution is a global concern,particularly in coastal *** aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) are regarded as the most toxic components of petroleum *** this study,the biomonitoring and ranking effects of petroleum hydrocarbons and PAHs on the marine fish model Oryzias melastigma embryos were determined in the Jiulong River Estuary(JRE) and its adjacent waters in *** results showed that the levels of petroleum hydrocarbons from almost all sites met the primary standard for marine seawater quality,and the concentrations of the 16 priority PAHs in the surface seawater were lower compared with those in other coastal areas worldwide.A new fish expert system based on the embryotoxicity of ***(OME-FES) was developed and applied in the field to evaluate the biological effects of petroleum hydrocarbons and *** selected physiological index and molecular indicators in OME-FES were appropriate biomarkers for indicating the harmful effects of petroleum hydrocarbons and *** outcome of OME-FES revealed that the biological effect levels of the sampling sites ranged from level Ⅰ(no stress) to level Ⅲ(medium stress),which is further corroborated by the findings of nested analysis of variance(ANOVA) *** results suggest that the OME-FES is an effective tool for evaluating and ranking the biological effects of marine petroleum hydrocarbons and *** method may also be applied to evaluate other marine pollutants based on its framework.

Off-farm employment,agriculture production activities,and household dietary diversity in environmentally and economically vulnerable areas of Asia

Access to off-farm employment has been expected to be a critical approach to ending hunger and all forms of malnutrition,two important targets of achieving Zero *** study aims to investigate the role of off-farm employment in improving dietary diversity through substitution effect and complementary effect with agricultural production activities and income *** study adopts Poisson/Tobit/Probit/OLS regressions and the instrument variable method based on the primary survey data collected among 1,282 households at 12 sites in environmentally and economically vulnerable areas of China,Nepal,Cambodia,Thailand,and Myanmar in *** results show that off-farm employment is positively associated with household dietary diversity and the consumption of flesh meat,fish and other aquatic animals,fruits,and milk and dairy products,which are rich in protein and *** results of mechanism analysis show that off-farm employment contributes to household dietary diversity by improving crop diversity,especially for poor households,boosting the probability of livestock raising for households with the middle one-third disposal income,and increasing household *** positive association between off-farm employment and household dietary diversity is much higher for households with the bottom one-third disposal income,low illiteracy,and from upper-middle income *** findings imply that off-farm employment does play a vital role in achieving multiple benefits of poverty alleviation,malnutrition reduction,and agrobiodiversity conservation in environmentally and economically vulnerable ***,it may enlarge the gaps in dietary diversity between households with low human capital and from low and lower-middle income countries and those with high human capital and from middle-high countries.

Ocean fronts play important roles in nutrient transport and in the shaping ecological *** zones in small bays are typically small in scale,have a complex structure,and they are spatially and temporally variable,but there are limited data on how biological communities respond to this *** Bay,a mediumsized estuary in China,is an ideal place in which to study the response of plankton to small-scale ocean fronts,because three water masses(Qiantang River Diluted Water,Changjiang River Diluted Water,and the East China Sea current) converge here and form dynamic salinity fronts throughout the *** investigate zooplankton communities,and temperature,salinity and chlorophyll a(Chl a) in Hangzhou Bay in June(wet perio d) and December(dry period) of 2022 and examine the dominant environmental factors that affect zooplankton community spatial *** then match the spatial distributions of zooplankton communities with those of salinity fronts.S alinity is the most important explanatory variable to affect zooplankton community spatial variability during both wet and dry periods,in that it contributes>60% of the variability in community ***,the spatial distributions of zooplankton match well with salinity *** December,with weaker Qiantang River Diluted Water and a stronger secondary Changjiang River Plume,zooplankton communities occur in moderate salinity(MS,salinity range 15.6±2.2) and high salinity(HS,22.4±1.7) regions,and their ecological boundaries closely match the Qiantang River Diluted Water *** June,different zooplankton communities occur in low salinity(LS,3.9±1.0),MS(11.7±3.6) and HS(21.3±1.9) *** the LS region occurs abnormally in the central bay rather than its apex because of the anomalous influence of rising and falling tides during the sampling perio d,the ecological boundaries still match salinity ***-salinity or brackish-water zooplankter taxa are relatively more abunda

In 2022,Yellow Sea green tide caused by Ulva prolifera reached a historic minimum and the coastal areas of Shandong Peninsula were less ***,the largest amount of seaweed biomass has been washed ashore on Lianyungang and Rizhao coasts since *** studied the development pattern of Yellow Sea green tide in 2022,and analyzed the key environmental factors on the growth and drifting,then discussed the possible reasons that resulted in the massive stranding of green tide biomass in Lianyungang and *** show under the combined influence of the east to southeast winds and currents with shoreward anomalies,green tide drifted to the coastal waters between Shandong and Jiangsu provinces and the distribution areas located westward compared with previous years(2008–2021).Floating *** rafts from the coastal waters of Binhai and Sheyang drifted continuously into the coastal waters of Lianyungang and Rizhao,providing important supplements for Yellow Sea green *** green tide in 2022 distributed close to the coastal waters,the abundant nutrients might support their continuous high growth *** addition,the amount of rainfall around Shandong Peninsula from late June to early July were significantly higher than in previous years,which might promote the development of green tide to some extent.

Priming effect（PE） on soil organic carbon（SOC） decomposition caused by the addition of organic carbon（C） is an important ecological process in regulating soil C cycle. Additionally, most priming studies are confined to laboratory trials, while the assessment of soil PE under field conditions with variable weather conditions is scarce. This study assessed the direct effects of glucose addition and in-situ warming on the extent of PE under field conditions in a temperate forest. We evaluated soil PE using13C-glucose labelling, a simple and novel technique, based on the Keeling plot method. Glucose addition significantly enhanced native SOC decomposition and induced strong PE. However, the effect of in-situ warming on the extent of PE was not significant. This study confirms the importance of PE in regulating SOC turnover under field conditions.

INTRODUCTION On 24 August 2023,the Japanese government insisted on initiating the discharge of Fukushima nuclearcontaminated water into the sea,causing widespread global concerns regarding marine biological safety,seafood and marine resources(TEPCO 2023).Although the Japanese government has consistently emphasized that the nuclear wastewater has been treated using an Advanced Liquid Processing System(ALPS),resulting in very low concentrations of various nuclear elements,and that the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA)has conducted real-time monitoring of the treatment process and discharge fow(IAEA 2023),people around the world still harbor signifcant *** are a few reasons for this ongoing apprehension.

Key processes of carbon cycle and sink enhancement paths in natural wetland ecosystems in China

Wetland ecosystems have become one of the long-term solutions for mitigating global climate change due to their strong carbon sequestration ***,the key carbon cycle processes in wetland ecosystems still lack a systematic *** the context of wetland protection and restoration,there is still a lack of consensus on the technical pathways to realize carbon sink multiplication in wetland *** this paper,the key processes of carbon cycle,such as photosynthetic carbon uptake,microbial carbon decomposition and carbon deposition and burial,are sorted out and summarized in four major wetland types,namely,swamp and peat wetlands,river and riparian wetlands,lake and lakeshore wetlands,and estuarine and coastal *** on the key processes of carbon cycle,three technological pathways for carbon sink multiplication are proposed,including,vegetation carbon sequestration and sink enhancement technology,soil carbon emission reduction technology and carbon deposition and burial *** key technologies under each pathway are further *** the carbon sink effects of the carbon sink technologies in different wetland types are qualitatively ***,wetland protection and restoration methods in corresponding regions are given in the light of the regional characteristics of wetlands in *** will provide a scientific basis for the strategy of doubling the carbon sinks of China′s wetland ecosystems.

The Impacts of Climate Change and Human Activities on Cropland Net Primary Productivity in Bangladesh,India and Myanmar

Under global change and climate variations,determining the impacts of climate change and human activities on cropland net primary productivity(NPP)in Bangladesh,India and Myanmar(BIM)is of great significance for identifying yield-limiting factors,making adaptive agricultural management plans,and improving *** on the GLOPEM-CEVSA model,through an integration of remote sensing data and LAI simulation,we investigated the impacts and spatiotemporal changes of water and human activities on BIM from 1982 to *** types of cropland NPPs were considered:actual NPP(NPPA),NPP affected by temperature and water(NPPWT),and NPP only affected by temperature(NPPT).Our analysis revealed that the water factor plays a predominant role in determining the NPP level in the *** variability was found to be conducive to NPPT,exhibiting an increasing trend of 10.66 g C m^(-2) yr^(-1).However,this trend was partially offset by precipitation variability,resulting in a net increase of 0.96 g C m^(-2) yr^(-1).In comparing temperature-driven NPP to temperature and water-driven NPP,water stress caused NPPT to decrease by 65.46% compared to NPPWT for the entire *** NPP in northwestern India and the central Deccan Plateau were significantly affected by water ***,the influence of water on NPP in the BIM exhibited a substantial upward trend from 1982 to 2015,with Myanmar experiencing the most significant *** gap between NPPWT and NPPA in BIM demonstrated a notable decreasing trend during the same period,underscoring the positive impact of human activities on *** drawn from our findings suggest that with the implementation of rational and efficient crop management practices,there is a 36.80% potential improvement in NPPA compared to NPPWT in the BIM region,with India and Myanmar showing potential increases of 39.20% and 38.29%,*** insights provide guidance for practical measures aimed at water resource management to en

Effects of phosphorus limitation on sinking velocities of phytoplankton during summer in the Changjiang River Estuary

The sinking of phytoplankton is critical to organic matter transportation in the ocean and it is an essential process for the formation of coastal hypoxic *** study was based on a field investigation conducted during the summer of 2022 in the Changjiang River(Yangtze River) Estuary(CJE) and its adjacent *** settling column method was employed to measure the sinking velocity(SV) of different size fractions of phytoplankton at the surface of the sea and to analyze their environmental control *** findings reveal significant spatial variation in phytoplankton SV(-0.55-2.41 m/d) within the ***-speed sinking was predominantly observed in phosphate-depleted regions beyond the CJE *** the same time,an upward trend was more commonly observed in the phosphate-rich regions near the CJE *** SV ranges for different sizefractionated phytoplankton,including micro-(>20 μm),nano-(2-20 μm),and picophytoplankton(0.7-2 μm),were-0.50-4.74 m/d,-1.04-1.59 m/d,and-1.24-1.65 m/d,*** analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between SV and dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP),implying that the influence of DIP contributes to *** variations in phytoplankton alkaline phosphatase activity suggested a significant increase in SV across all size fractions in the event of phosphorus *** communities with limited photo synthetic capacity(maximum photochemical efficience,Fv/Fm <0.3) were found to have higher SV than that of communities with strong capacity,suggesting a link between sinking and alterations in physiological conditions due to phosphate *** findings from the in situ phosphate enrichment experiments confirmed a marked decrease in SV following phosphate *** findings suggest that phosphorus limitation is the primary driver of elevated SV in the *** study enhances the comprehension of the potential mechanisms underlying hypoxic zone formation in the CJE,providing no
