Risk factors for local recurrence of middle and lower rectal carcinoma after curative resection

AIM： To explore the risk factors for local recurrence of middle and lower rectal carcinoma after curative resection. METHODS： Specimens of middle and lower rectal carcinoma from 56 patients who received curative resection at the Department of General Surgery of guangdong Provincial People＇s Hospital were studied. A large slice technique was used to detect mesorectal metastasis and evaluate circumferential resection margin status. The relations between clinicopathologic characteristics, mesorectal metastasis and circumferential resection margin status were identified in patients with local recurrence of middle and lower rectal carcinoma. RESULTS： Local recurrence of middle and lower rectal carcinoma after curative resection occurred in 7 of the 56 patients （12.5%）, and was significantly associated with family history （Х^2= 3.929, P = 0.047）, high CEA level （Х^2 = 4.964, P = 0.026）, cancerous perforation （Х^2 = 8.503, P = 0.004）, tumor differentiation （Х^2 = 9.315, P = 0.009） and vessel cancerous emboli （Х^2 = 11.879, P = 0.001）. In contrast, no significant correlation was found between local recurrence of rectal carcinoma and other variables such as age （Х^2 = 0.506, P = 0.477）, gender （Х^2 = 0.102, Z2 = 0.749）, tumor diameter （Х^2 = 0.421, P = 0.516）,tumor infiltration （Х^2 = 5.052, P = 0.168）, depth of tumor invasion （Х^2 = 4.588, P = 0.101）, lymph node metastases （Х^2 = 3.688, P = 0.055） and TNM staging system （Х^2 = 3.765, P = 0.152）. The local recurrence rate of middle and lower rectal carcinoma was 33.3% （4/12） in patients with positive circumferential resection margin and 6.8% （3/44） in those with negative circumferential resection margin. There was a significant difference between the two groups （Х^2 = 6.061, P = 0.014）. Local recurrence of rectal carcinoma occurred in 6 of 36 patients （16.7%） with mesorectal metastasis, and in 1 of 20 patients （5.0%） without mesorectal metastasis. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups （Х^2 = 1.6

Antioxidative effects of berberine pre-treatment on hydrogen peroxide-induced PC12 cell toxicity

Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer＇s disease. Oxidative damage could be prevented by augmenting the endogenous defense capacity against oxidative stress by antioxidant intake. As an effective alkaloid component of Chinese herbal medicine Rhizoma coptidis extract, berberine exhibits antioxidative properties and ameliorates memory impairment in a rat model of Alzheimer＇s disease. The present study investigated the protective effects of berberine on H2O2-induced PC12 cell toxicity. Results demonstrated that berberine protects PC12 cells from H2O2-induced apoptosis and increases PC12 cell viability. Lactate dehydrogenase release, reactive oxygen content, and malonyl dialdehyde levels were significantly decreased （P 〈 0.01）. The protective effects of berberine on H2O2-induced PC12 cell toxicity were achieved via the antioxidative effects of berberine.

BACKGROUND Both Gilbert's syndrome(GS)and hereditary spherocytosis(HS)are common genetic ***,comorbidity of GS with HS has always been considered a rare phenomenon,and it can impede accurate diagnoses in the presence of isolated unconjugated *** SUMMARY In a study on Levitt’s carbon monoxide(CO)breath test for the differential diagnosis of isolated hyperbilirubinemia,we found six GS patients with HS in 6 *** patients,including five males and one female,aged 25-58 years,were from four families and generally in good *** chronic fluctuating jaundice and/or hyperbilirubinemia had been diagnosed as simple constitutional jaundice for 6-30 *** function tests showed isolated unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia with serum total bilirubin ranging from 20.7-75.4μmol/*** hemoglobin was normal in five cases,and slightly decreased in one(11.5 g/dL).Overt hemolytic signs were absent,while erythrocyte lifespan determined by the newly developed Levitt’s CO breath test was significantly short(15-50 d),definitely demonstrating the presence of *** that their unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia compared inappropriately with hemolytic severity,as indicated by the hemoglobin level,further combined genetic tests for both UGT1A1 and hereditary erythrocyte deficiencies were *** tests confirmed,at last,the coexistence of GS with *** Comorbidity of GS and HS might not be uncommon in isolated unconjugated *** CO breath test would sensitively detect the hemolysis,the discordance between the hyperbilirubinemia and hemoglobin level could strongly indicate the coexistence of GS and HS.

Individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment(aMCI)have a high risk of developing Alzheimer’s *** repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(rTMS)is considered a potentially effective treatment for cognitive impairment in patients with aMCI,the neuroimaging mechanisms are poorly ***,we performed a double-blind randomized sham-controlled trial in which rTMS was applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of aMCI patients recruited from a community near the Third Hospital Affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University,***-four patients with aMCI were randomly assigned to receive true rTMS(treatment group,n=12,6 men and 6 women;age 65.08±4.89 years)or sham stimulation(sham group,n=12,5 men and 7 women;age 64.67±4.77 years).rTMS parameters included a stimulation frequency of 10 Hz,stimulation duration of 2 seconds,stimulation interval of 8 seconds,20 repetitions at 80%of the motor threshold,and 400 pulses per ***/sham stimulation was performed five times per week over a period of 4 consecutive *** results showed that compared with baseline,Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores were significantly increased and the value of the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation(ALFF)was significantly increased at the end of treatment and 1 month after *** with the sham group,the ALFF values in the right inferior frontal gyrus,triangular part of the inferior frontal gyrus,right precuneus,left angular gyrus,and right supramarginal gyrus were significantly increased,and the ALFF values in the right superior frontal gyrus were significantly decreased in the treatment *** findings suggest that high-frequency rTMS can effectively improve cognitive function in aMCI patients and alter spontaneous brain activity in cognitive-related brain *** study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Shenzhen Baoan Hospital of Southern Medical University,China(approval ***20190901)on September 3,2019 and registered

Epidemiological Characteristics and Diagnostic Outcomes of Suspected Occupational Noise-Induced Deafness—guangdong province,China,2014–2023

Introduction:Suspected occupational noiseinduced deafness(ONID)represents the most prevalent suspected occupational disease in guangdong province and is among the most frequently reported *** its public health significance,we conducted a systematic investigation of suspected ONID cases in guangdong from 2014 to 2023,analyzing their epidemiological characteristics and diagnostic outcomes to inform evidence-based policies for ONID prevention and ***:Data on suspected ONID cases reported in guangdong province from 2014 to 2023 were extracted from the“Occupational Diseases and Health Hazard Factors Monitoring Information System.”Cases were analyzed using descriptive epidemiological methods,with joinpoint regression analysis employed to assess long-term ***:From 2014 to 2023,16,987 suspected ONID cases were reported in guangdong province,comprising 65.22%of all suspected occupational disease cases(26,044).Cases exhibited a significant increasing trend(Average annual percentage change:11.8%,95%CI:2.9%–22.3%,P=0.013).The Pearl River Delta region accounted for 87.9%of all cases,with manufacturing being the predominant industry(90.1%).Within manufacturing,the metal products industry represented the highest proportion(15.2%).Males constituted 87.7%(14,905/16,987)of *** of diagnostic outcomes from 2020 to 2023 revealed an overall diagnostic procedure initiation rate of 45.1%,with a subsequent confirmation rate of 48.9%.Conclusions:guangdong province demonstrates high occurrence patterns of suspected ONID cases,particularly concentrated in the Pearl River Delta region and manufacturing *** low rates of diagnostic procedure initiation and confirmation highlight the urgent need for enhanced regulatory oversight of diagnostic procedures and the development of expert consensus on suspected ONID identification criteria to improve diagnostic confirmation rates.

Nuclear factor kappa B: A marker of chemotherapy for human stage Ⅳ gastric carcinoma

AIM： To detect the nuclear factor kappa B （NF-κB） condition in human stage IV gastric carcinoma patients and to explore the correlation between NF-κB activation and survival of these patients after chemotherapy. METHODS： Expression of NF-κB-p65 was determined by immunohistochemical analysis. Activity of NF-κB DNA-binding in carcinoma tissue was detected by electrophoretic mobility shift assay. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed to show the relation between NF-κB and progression-free survival （PFS） or overall survival （OS） of the patients. RESULTS： The positive expression rate of NF-κB-p65 in 60 gastric cancer tissue samples was 76.7% （46160）. The expression of NF-κB-p65 was reduced in adjacent carcinoma and normal tissue samples. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay （EMSA） analysis showed a strong activation of NF-κB in cancer tissue samples. A survival difference was found in NF-κB-p65 positive and negative patients. NF-κB-p65 expression was negative in cancer tissue samples （n = 14）. PFS was 191.40 ± 59.88 d and 152.93 ±16.99 d, respectively, in patients with positive NF-κB-p65 expression （n = 46）（P = 0.4028）. The survival time of patients with negative and positive NF-κB-p65 expression was 425.16 ±61.61 d and 418.85 ±42.98 d, respectively （P = 0.7303）. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed no significant difference in PFS or OS. The 46 patient tissue which positive NF-κB-p65 expression was found in the tissue samples from the 46 patients whose PFS and OS were 564.89 ± 75.94 d and s 352.37 ±41.32 d, respectively （P = 0.0165）. CONCLUSION： NF-κB is activated in gastric carcinoma tissue, which is related to the OS after chemotherapy.
