There is a need to develop interventions to slow or reverse the degeneration of dopamine neurons in Parkinson’s disease after *** that preclinical and clinical studies suggest benefits of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids,such as docosahexaenoic acid,and exercise in Parkinson’s disease,we investigated whether both could synergistically interact to induce recovery of the dopaminergic ***,mice received a unilateral stereotactic injection of 6-hydroxydopamine into the striatum to establish an animal model of nigrostriatal *** weeks after lesion,animals were fed a docosahexaenoic acid-enriched or a control diet for the next 8 *** this period,the animals had access to a running wheel,which they could use or *** acid treatment,voluntary exercise,or the combination of both had no effect on(i)distance traveled in the open field test,(ii)the percentage of contraversive rotations in the apomorphine-induction test or(iii)the number of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive cells in the substantia nigra pars ***,the docosahexaenoic acid diet increased the number of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive terminals and induced a rise in dopamine concentrations in the lesioned *** to docosahexaenoic acid treatment or exercise alone,the combination of docosahexaenoic acid and exercise(i)improved forelimb balance in the stepping test,(ii)decreased the striatal DOPAC/dopamine ratio and(iii)led to increased dopamine transporter levels in the lesioned *** present results suggest that the combination of exercise and docosahexaenoic acid may act synergistically in the striatum of mice with a unilateral lesion of the dopaminergic system and provide support for clinical trials combining nutrition and physical exercise in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

On the calibration of a shear stress criterion for rock joints to represent the full stress-strain profile

Conventional numerical solutions developed to describe the geomechanical behavior of rock interfaces subjected to differential load emphasize peak and residual shear *** detailed analysis of preand post-peak shear stress-displacement behavior is central to various time-dependent and dynamic rock mechanic problems such as rockbursts and structural instabilities in highly stressed *** complete stress-displacement surface(CSDS)model was developed to describe analytically the pre-and post-peak behavior of rock interfaces under differential *** formulations of the CSDS model required extensive curve-fitting iterations which limited its practical applicability and transparent integration into engineering *** present work proposes modifications to the CSDS model aimed at developing a comprehensive and modern calibration protocol to describe the complete shear stressdisplacement behavior of rock interfaces under differential *** proposed update to the CSDS model incorporates the concept of mobilized shear strength to enhance the post-peak ***’s concepts of joint roughness coefficient(JRC)and joint compressive strength(JCS)are incorporated to facilitate empirical estimations for peak shear stress and normal closure ***/uniaxial compression test and direct shear test results are used to validate the updated model and exemplify the proposed calibration *** results illustrate that the revised model successfully predicts the post-peak and complete axial stressestrain and shear stressedisplacement curves for rock joints.

Every day walking consists of frequent voluntary modifications in the gait pattern to negotiate *** spinal cord injury,stepping over an obstacle becomes *** over an obstacle requires sensorimotor transformations in several structures of the brain,including the parietal cortex,premotor cortex,and motor *** information and planning are transformed into motor commands,which are sent from the motor cortex to spinal neuronal circuits to alter limb trajectory,coordinate the limbs,and maintain *** spinal cord injury,bidirectional communication between the brain and spinal cord is disrupted and animals,including humans,fail to voluntarily modify limb trajectory to step over an ***,in this review,we discuss the neuromechanical control of stepping over an obstacle,why it fails after spinal cord injury,and how it recovers to a certain extent.

A new non-linear vortex lattice method:Applications to wing aerodynamic optimizations

This paper presents a new non-linear formulation of the classical Vortex Lattice Method （VLM） approach for calculating the aerodynamic properties of lifting surfaces. The method accounts for the effects of viscosity, and due to its low computational cost, it represents a very good tool to perform rapid and accurate wing design and optimization procedures. The mathematical model is constructed by using two-dimensional viscous analyses of the wing span-wise sections, according to strip theory, and then coupling the strip viscous forces with the forces generated by the vortex rings distributed on the wing camber surface, calculated with a fully three-dimensional vortex lifting law. The numerical results obtained with the proposed method are validated with experimental data and show good agreement in predicting both the lift and pitching moment, as well as in predicting the wing drag. The method is applied to modifying the wing of an Unmanned Aerial System to increase its aerodynamic efficiency and to calculate the drag reductions obtained by an upper surface morphing technique for an adaptable regional aircraft wing.

Thermal Performance Prediction in the Air Gap of a Rotor-Stator Configuration: Effects of Numerical Models

This study is dedicated to a numerical investigation of convective heat transfer on the rotor surfaces of a rotor-stator configuration that is typically found in large *** computational fluid dynamics calculations with two turbulence modelling approaches are used to predict the flow structure and heat transfer in the air gap of the rotor-stator *** steady state mixing plane approach is employed at the interface to couple the rotor and stator *** show that the location of mixing plane interface in the air gap plays an important role in the prediction of heat transfer on the pole ***,it is indicated that the prediction of temperature distribution on the pole face is greatly affected by the turbulence models ***,through a comparison between the pure convective and conjugate heat transfer methodologies,it is shown that the inclusion of solid domain into the numerical model significantly improves the thermal prediction of the solid components of the machine.

Experimental study of path planning problem using EMCOA for a holonomic mobile robot

In this paper,a comparative study of the path planning problem using evolutionary algorithms,in comparison with classical methods such as the A*algorithm,is presented for a holonomic mobile *** configured navigation system,which consists of the integration of sensors sources,map formatting,global and local path planners,and the base controller,aims to enable the robot to follow the shortest smooth path ***-based mapping is used for scoring paths efficiently,allowing the determination of collision-free trajectories from the initial to the target *** work considers the evolutionary algorithms,the mutated cuckoo optimization algorithm(MCOA)and the genetic algorithm(GA),as a global planner to find the shortest safe path among others.A non-uniform motion coefficient is introduced for MCOA in order to increase the performance of this algorithm.A series of experiments are accomplished and analyzed to confirm the performance of the global planner implemented on a holonomic mobile *** results of the experiments show the capacity of the planner framework with respect to the path planning problem under various obstacle layouts.

Based on the empirical analysis of data contained in the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group （ISBSG） repository, this paper presents software engineering project duration models based on project effort. Duration models are built for the entire dataset and for subsets of projects developed for personal computer, mid-range and mainframe platforms. Duration models are also constructed for projects requiring fewer than 400 person-hours of effort and for projects requiring more than 400 person-hours of effort. The usefulness of adding the maximum number of assigned resources as a second independent variable to explain duration is also analyzed. The opportunity to build duration models directly from project functional size in function points is investigated as well.

The three-phase dual active bridge(3 p-DAB)converter is widely considered in next-generation DC grid *** for traditional AC grids,the successful integration of power electronic converters in DC grids requires accurate time-domain system-level *** demonstrated in the existing literature,the development and efficient implementation of large-signal models of 3 pDAB converters are not *** this paper,a generalized average model is developed,which enables system-level simulation of DC grids with 3 p-DAB converters in electromagnetic transient type(EMT-type)*** proposed model is rigorously compared with alternative modeling techniques:ideal-model,switching-function and state-space *** is concluded that the generalized average model provides an optimal solution when accuracy of transient response,reduction in computation time,and wideband response factors are considered.

Simple Algorithms for Network Visualization:A Tutorial

The graph drawing and information visualization communities have developed many sophisticated techniques for visualizing network data, often involving complicated algorithms that are difficult for the uninitiated to learn. This article is intended for beginners who are interested in programming their own network visualizations, or for those curious about some of the basic mechanics of graph visualization. Four easy-to-program network layout techniques are discussed, with details given for implementing each one： force-directed node-link diagrams, arc diagrams, adjacency matrices, and circular layouts. A Java applet demonstrating these layouts, with open source code, is available at http：//***/research/simpleNetVis/. The end of this article also briefly surveys research topics in graph visualization, pointing readers to references for further reading.

Thermogravimetric analysis and kinetic modeling of the co-pyrolysis of a bituminous coal and poplar wood

The co-pyrolysis of coal and biomass has proven to be a promising route to produce liquid and gaseous fuels as well as specific value-added chemicals while contributing to mitigating CO_(2) *** interactions between the co-processed feedstocks,however,need to be elucidated to support the development of such a thermochemical conversion *** this context,the present work covers the kinetic analysis of the co-pyrolysis of a bituminous coal with poplar *** this research,biomass was blended with coal at two different mass ratios(10%(mass)and 20%(mass)).Thermogravimetric analyses were carried out with pure and blended samples at four heating rates(5,10,15 and 30℃·min^(-1)).A direct comparison of experimental and theoretical results(based on a simple additivity rule)failed to yield a clear-cut conclusion regarding the existence of synergistic *** analyses have therefore been achieved using two model-free methods(the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose models)to estimate the rate constant parameters related to the pyrolysis process.A significant decrease of the activation energy has thus been observed when adding wood to coal(activation energies associated with the blend containing 20%(mass)of biomass being even lower than those estimated for pure wood at low conversion degrees).This trend was attributed to the possible presence of synergies whose related mechanisms are *** rate constant parameters derived by means of the two tested models were finally used to simulate the evolution of the conversion degree of each sample as a function of the temperature,thus leading to a satisfying agreement between measured and simulated data.
