Cancer is a widespread worldwide chronic disease. In most cases, the high mortality rate from cancer correlates with a lack of clear symptoms, which results in late diagnosis for patients, and consequently, advanced tumor disease with poor probabilities for cure, since many patients will show chemo-and radio-resistance. Several mechanisms have been studied to explain chemo-and radio-resistance to anti-tumor therapies, including cell signaling pathways, anti-apoptotic mechanisms, stemness, metabolism, and cellular phenotypes. Interestingly, the presence of cancer stem cells(CSCs), which are a subset of cells within the tumors, has been related to therapy resistance. In this review, we focus on evaluating the presence of CSCs in different tumors such as breast cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer, and hematological neoplasias, highlighting studies where CSCs were identified in patient samples. It is evident that there has been a great drive to identify the cell surface phenotypes of CSCs so that they can be used as a tool for anti-tumor therapy treatment design. We also review the potential effect of nanoparticles, drugs, natural compounds, aldehyde dehydrogenase inhibitors, cell signaling inhibitors, and antibodies to treat CSCs from specific tumors. Taken together, we present an overview of the role of CSCs in tumorigenesis and how research is advancing to target these highly tumorigenic cells to improve oncology patient outcomes.

The link between the differentia- tion of effector T lymphocytes and metabolism has become an important area of research. The role played by the phosphoinositide 3-kinase （PI3K）/Akt/ mTOR （mammalian target ofrapamycin） pathway in this process was recently emphasized by Lucas et al.1 who reported a series of primary immunodeficiency patients with three different germ-line, gain-of-function mutations of the p1108 subunit of PI3K. The patients consistently presented a deficiency in naive T lymphocytes and an accumulation of highly differentiated effector T cells. This phenotype was associated with recurrent respiratory infections and with the reactivation of persistent viruses. The disease was named PASLI （p1108-activating mutation causing senescent T cells, lymphadenopathy and immunodeficiency）. The same disorder was simultaneously reported by Angulo et al.z and was named the activated PI3K-8 syndrome （APDS）. although the accumulation of effector T cells in the state of immunodeficiency was somewhat unexpected, the description of this syn- drome provides important insight into the regulation of T-cell differentiation and T-cell memory.

The carrying capacity for vegetation of forest land across China:Near real-time monitoring and short-term forecasting based on satellite observation

Ecological restoration projects implemented over the past 20 years have substantially increased forest coverage in China,but the high tree mortality of new afforestation forest remains a challenging but unsolved *** is still not clear how much vegetation can be sustained by the forest lands with given water,energy and soil conditions,i.e.,the carrying capacity for vegetation(CCV)of forest lands,which is the prerequisite for planning and implementing forest restoration ***,we used a simplified method to evaluate the CCV across forest lands ***,based on leaf area index(LAI)dataset,we use boosted regression tree and multiple linear regression model to analyze the CCV during 2001-2020 and 2021-2030 and explore the contribution of environmental *** find that there are three typical regions with lower CCV located in the Loess Plateau and the southern region of the Inner Mongolia Plateau,the Hengduan Mountain region,and the Tianshan *** importantly,the vegetation in the regions near the dry-wet climate transition zone show excess local carrying capacity for vegetation over the past two decades and they are more susceptible to potential climatic *** comparison,in the Greater Khingan Mountains and Hengduan Mountains,there is high potential to improve the forest ***,precipitation and soil affects the CCV by shaping the vegetation in the optimal *** indicates that more consideration should be given to restrictions of regional environmental constraints when planning afforestation and forest *** study has important implications for guiding future forest scheme in China.

Through two methods, we investigate the solitary and periodic wave solutions of the differential equation describing a nonlinear coupled two-dimensional discrete electrical lattice. The fixed points of our model equation are examined and the bifurcations of phase portraits of this equation for various values of the front wave velocity are presented. Using the sineGordon expansion method and classic integration, we obtain exact transverse solutions including breathers, bright solitons,and periodic solutions.

Aim: To observe the effect of the aqueous extract of hypocotyls of the plant Lepidium meyenii (Maca) on spermato-genic damage induced by the organophosphate insecticide malathion in mice. Methods: Mice were treated with 80 mg kg^(-1) of malathion in the presence or absence of an aqueous extract of Maca, which was orally administered 7, 14 or 21 days after injection of the malathion. Stages of the seminiferous epithelium were assessed by transillumination on days 0, 7, 14 and 21. Results: The administration of Maca increased significantly the length of stage 鈪?on days 7, 14 and 21 of treatment compared with the controls. An increase in the length of stage 鈪?occurred on day 14 of treatment. Malathion affected spermatogenesis by reducing the lengths of stage 鈪?on day 7, stages 鈪?and 鈪?鈪?on day 14 and a recovery of stages 鈪?鈪?on day 21. The magnitude of alteration in the length of stage 鈪?produced by malathion was significantly reduced by Maca on days 7 and 14. The length of stage 鈪?was increased when Maca was administered to mice treated with malathion. Assessment of the relative length of stages of the seminiferous epithelium showed that Maca treatment resulted in rapid recovery of the effect of malathion. Conclusion: Maca enhances spermatogenesis following spermatogenic damage caused by the organophosphorous pesticide.

Free-space optical communication is a very promising alternative to fiber communication systems,in terms of ease of deployment and *** light has several features of utter relevance for free-space applications:low absorption when propagating in the atmosphere even under adverse conditions,robustness of the wavefront during long-distance propagation,and absence of regulations and restrictions for this range of wavelengths.A proof-of-concept of high-speed transmission taking advantage of intersubband devices has recently been demonstrated,but this effort was limited by the short-distance optical path(up to 1 m).In this work,we study the possibility of building a long-range link using unipolar quantum *** different detectors are used:an uncooled quantum cascade detector and a nitrogen-cooled quantum well-infrared *** evaluate the maximum data rate of our link in a back-to-back configuration before adding a Herriott cell to increase the length of the light path up to 31 *** using pulse shaping,pre-and post-processing,we reach a record bitrate of 30 Gbit s−1 for both two-level(OOK)and four-level(PAM-4)modulation schemes for a 31-m propagation link and a bit error rate compatible with error-correction codes.

In this study,the kerogen of oil shale from Moroccan Tarfaya deposits was isolated and the changes in the initial organic matter during the removal of the mineral matrix were *** extraction of the oil shale increases the intensity of the peaks in the X-ray *** spectra and X-ray diffractograms reveal the presence of mineral,calcite,quartz,kaolinite,and pyrite in the mineral matrix of the oil *** and hydrofluoric acids dissolution do not alter the organic *** nonisothermal weight loss measurements indicate that thermal decomposition of the isolated kerogen can be described by first-order reaction.A single kinetic expression is valid over the temperature range of kerogen pyrolysis between 433K and ***,the results indicate that the removal of mineral matter causes a decrease in the activation energies of the pyrolysis reactions of oil shale.

Estimation of mean water vapour residence time during tropical cyclones using a Lagrangian approach

Tropical cyclone(TC)-related rainfall mostly depends on the atmospheric moisture uptake from local and remote *** this study,the mean water vapour residence time(MWVRT)was computed for precipitation related to TCs in each basin and on a global scale by applying a Lagrangian moisture source diagnostic *** to our results,the highest MWVRT was found for the TCs over the South Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean basins(~3.08 days),followed by the Western North Pacific Ocean,Central and East North Pacific Ocean,North Indian Ocean,and North Atlantic Ocean basins(which exhibited values of 2.98,2.94,2.85,and 2.72 days,respectively).We also found a statistically significant(pdecrease in MWVRT,at a rate of~2.4 h/decade in the North Indian Ocean and~1.0 h/decade in the remaining *** average,the MWVRT decreased during the 24 h before TCs made landfall,and the atmospheric parcels precipitated faster after evaporation when TCs moved over land than over the *** research should focus on the relationship between global warming and MWVRT of atmospheric parcels that precipitate over TC positions.
