The intensity of an earthquake is an important criterion and index for earthquake resistance, and disaster relief and for antiseismic engineering in large and medium sized cities. The earthquake data in xinjiang are abundant and have been widely applied to the statistic relationship of seismic intensity of western China. However, there exists some unreasonable and man_made factors in them. We put forward the idea of area A_ 0-1 to express the effect of seismic intensity, studied the questions and influencing factors arising from uncertainty of intensity zoning and finally, proposed some solutions.

The parameters, stress field background, geological tectonics and seismic sequence of the March 21, 2008, Ms7.4 Yutian, xinjiang earthquake are discussed in this paper. The characteristics of seismic activity in the epicenter and its adjacent region before the earthquake are analyzed; and a comparison is made between the Ms7.4 Yutian earthquake sequence, the Wenchuan Ms8.0 earthquake sequence and the Wuqia Ms6.9 earthquake sequence. The results show the Ms7.4 Yutian earthquake occurred in the junction between the Aityn Tagh fault and the western Kunlun fault, resulting perhaps from the tensile fracture of the branch fault located southwest of the Ashikule basin due to left-lateral dislocation of the Aityn Tagh fault; the seismic sequence is of main shock-aftershock type, the strongest aftershock being Ms5.8. The aftershocks attenuated quickly, and occurred in groups; the focal mechanism solutions and epicenter distribution have revealed a unilateral rupture source of this earthquake. Seismic activity shows that there was medium and medium-short term abnormity before the earthquake, but there was not short-imminent abnormity. Seismic activity of this earthquake sequence enhanced before the Ms8. 0 Wenchuan and the Ms6. 9 Wuqia earthquakes, showing the window effect to some extent.

Based on the continuous strain data recorded in xinjiang since 1985, we discuss the mechanisms of Tianshan＇ s uplift and Tarim basin＇ s clockwise rotation. The results indicate ： 1 ） The principal - compression directions in Tianshan are nearly NS, and their intersection angles with regional structures and mountains are nearly perpendicular, which is in accordance with Tianshan＇ s uplift and crustal shortening. 2）The principal compressions around Tarim basin tend to facilitate the regional faults＇ left-lateral strike-slip movements and the basin＇ s clockwise rotation. These phenomena of uplift/shortening and rotation are fundamentally the re- suits of India plate＇ s northward push on Euro-Asia plate, and the associated Pamir arc ＇ s rapid northward movement and regional blocks＇ interaction.

Based on the studies of earthquake activity, tectonic movement, crustal shortening rate, fault activity, local stress field and historical characteristics of strong earthquake activities in xinjiang, we divide the south part of xinjiang into 4 seismotectonic zones, namely, the eastern segment of south Tianshan seismic belt, the Kalpin block, the Kashi-Wuqia junction zone, and the west Kunlun Mountains seismic belt. Using earthquake catalogues from xinjiang since 1900, and on the basis of integrity analysis of earthquake records in different magnitude ranges, the seismicity state of different seismotectonic zones is analyzed quantificationaUy by calculating the mean value of annual strain energy release, annual rate of earthquakes with different lower limits of magnitude, b-value, and the parameter m of accelerating strain release model. The characteristic indexes of seismicity state for each of the seismic tectonic zones are then determined, which provide a quantitative basis for earthquake tendency analysis and judgment.

Jiashi and its surrounding areas are composed of many structural zones. Using the focal mechanism solutions of 59 moderately strong earthquakes in Jiashi and its surrounding areas, and combining these with the calculation results of system cluster and stress field inversion, we aualyzed the evolvement characteristics of the stress field for different times and different regions. The results were as follows： The earthquakes in Jiashi are mainly strike-slip. However, those of the Kalpin block are mainly reverse events, showing an obvious thrusting. The regional characteristics are different from other areas. The direction of the regional principal stress field is near NS. However, under different tectonic backgrounds, the directions of the stress fields are different. The direction of the principal compress stress is near NS in the Kashi-Wuqia area. But before and after the 3 earthquakes with M7.0, dynamic evolution from NW to NS and then to NE with time process was observed. The Kalpin block has been dominated by a consistent stress field in the NW direction for a long time. However, the direction of the stress field of the Jiashi region is NE. Since 1996, the direction of the regional stress field has changed obviously. The direction of the P axis was deflected towards the NE, and the plunge angle increased. The result shows clearly the regional characteristics and variation of the distribution pattern of the stress field in different tectonic environments.

A Preliminary Study on Seismicity and Stages of Seismic Energy Accumulation in Seismotectonic regions of Tianshan

Using seismic parameters, the characteristics of the seismic activity in various seismotectonic regions of Tiaushan were studied in this paper. These regions are going through different stages of seismic energy accumulation. Current seismic risk levels of these areas were analyzed synthetically by the tectonic movement rates, as well as the characteristics of the seismic activity and the recurrence intervals of strong earthquakes. We preliminarily studied the characteristics of seismic activity in different seismic energy accumulating stages. The result shows that the characteristics of the seismic activity in various seismotectonic regions of the Tiaushan area are influenced, not only by the regional tectonic movement, but also by the energy accumulating stage of various seismic tectonics. In the intense tectonic movement areas, it is important to estimate its stage of energy accumulating in order to predict the upper limit of the potential earthquake magnitude. In the less intense tectonic movement areas, the estimating of the stage of energy accumulation will help us recognize the dangerous level of the potential strong earthquake. The study shows that the seismotectonic regions in southern Tiaushan have reached the mid-stage and late-stage of energy accumulation, with a higher seismic activity and thus a higher seismic dangerous level than those in the northern and middle Tiaushan. The earthquake risk of southern Tianshan is up to Ms7.0, while that of the middle Tiaushan is up to Ms6.0 and that of northern Tiaushan is only around Ms5.0 - 6.0.

This paper briefly introduces the Seismotectonic Map of xinjiang and its neighborhood in the scale of 1∶*** map is amended,supplemented and expanded based of the newly compiled Seismotectonic Map of xinjiang in scale 1∶*** base map of this seismotectonic map is the geologic map of western China and its neighborhood compiled by Li *** abundant new materials from related research,referential literatures and the analyses on remote sensing data were used in the compiling work.A database and relevant documents are built for nearly 300 active faults and 150 active *** basic information of the major active faults,especially those near the border areas in this map are introduced in this paper.

Research on the Application of Time Structure Variation Analysis to the Jiashi-Bachu earthquake Swarm Sequence

In 1997 - 2003, 27 earthquakes with M≥ 5.0 occurred in the Jiashi-Bachu area of xinjiang. It was a rare strong earthquake swarm activity. The earthquake swarm has three time segments of activity with different magnitudes in the years 1997, 1998 and 2003. In different time segments, the seismic activity showed strengthenin-qguiet changes in various degrees before earthquakes with M ≥ 5.0. In order to delimitate effectively the precursory meaning of the clustering （strengthening） quiet change in sequence and to seek the time criterion for impending prediction, the nonlinear characteristics of seismic activity have been used to analyze the time structure characteristics of the earthquake swarm sequence, and further to forecast the development tendency of earthquake sequences in the future. Using the sequence catalogue recorded by the Kashi Station, and taking the earthquakes with Ms≥ 5.0 in the sequence as the starting point and the next earthquake with Ms = 5.0 as the end, statistical analysis has been performed on the time structure relations of the earthquake sequence in different stages. The main results are as follows：（1） Before the major earthquakes with M ≥ 5.0 in the swarm sequence, the time variation coefficient （δ-value） has abnormal demonstrations to different degrees. （2） Within 10 days after δ= 1, occurrence of earthquakes with M ≥ 5.0 in the swarm is very possible. （3） The time variation coefficient has three types of change. （4） The change process before earthquakes with M5.0 is similar to that before earthquakes with M6.0, with little difference in the threshold value. In the earthquake swarm sequence, it is difficult to delimitate accurately the attribute of the current sequences （foreshock or aftershock sequence） and to judge the magnitude of the follow-up earthquake by δ-value. We can only make the judgment that earthquakes with M5.0 are likely to occur in the sequence. （5） The critical clustering characteristics of the sequence are hierarchical. On
