earth System Model FGOALS-s2: Coupling a Dynamic Global Vegetation and Terrestrial Carbon Model with the Physical Climate System Model

earth System Models （ESMs） are fundamental tools for understanding climate-carbon feedback. An ESM version of the Flexible Global Ocean-Atmosphere-Land System model （FGOALS） was recently developed within the IPCC AR5 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 （CMIP5） modeling framework, and we describe the development of this model through the coupling of a dynamic global vegetation and terrestrial carbon model with FGOALS-s2. The performance of the coupled model is evaluated as follows. The simulated global total terrestrial gross primary production （GPP） is 124.4 PgC yr-I and net pri- mary production （NPP） is 50.9 PgC yr-1. The entire terrestrial carbon pools contain about 2009.9 PgC, comprising 628.2 PgC and 1381.6 PgC in vegetation and soil pools, respectively. Spatially, in the tropics, the seasonal cycle of NPP and net ecosystem production （NEP） exhibits a dipole mode across the equator due to migration of the monsoon rainbelt, while the seasonal cycle is not so significant in Leaf Area Index （LAI）. In the subtropics, especially in the East Asian monsoon region, the seasonal cycle is obvious due to changes in temperature and precipitation from boreal winter to summer. Vegetation productivity in the northern mid-high latitudes is too low, possibly due to low soil moisture there. On the interannual timescale, the terrestrial ecosystem shows a strong response to ENSO. The model- simulated Nifio3.4 index and total terrestrial NEP are both characterized by a broad spectral peak in the range of 2-7 years. Further analysis indicates their correlation coefficient reaches -0.7 when NEP lags the Nifio3.4 index for about 1-2 months.

The crystal structure of silicate oxyapatite Ca2Y8Si6O26 was indexed as hexagonal,space group P63/m,a=0.93515 nm,c=0.67872 nm,α=β=90°,γ=120°,V=0.5138692 *** strong peaks located at 32.079o,32.595o,and 50.104o with d=2.7903,2.74649,1.8194 was in accordance with,(112),and(213) *** optimum concentration of Tb3+ in Ca2Y8Si6O26 to yield highest photoluminescence intensity was 10 mol.% of Y3+.The corresponding excitation spectrum consisted of an intense broad band from 220 to 260 *** photoluminescence measurements showed that the green emission originated from 5D4-7F5 was predominant in the measured range with strong doublet lines at 543 and 549 nm.

Low-Level Temperature Inversions and Their Effect on Aerosol Condensation Nuclei Concentrations under Different Large-Scale Synoptic Circulations

Knowledge of the statistical characteristics of inversions and their effects on aerosols under different large-scale synoptic circulations is important for studying and modeling the diffusion of pollutants in the boundary layer. Based on results gen- erated using the self-organizing map （SOM） weather classification method, this study compares the statistical characteristics of surface-based inversions （SBIs） and elevated inversions （EIs）, and quantitatively evaluates the effect of SBIs on aerosol condensation nuclei （CN） concentrations and the relationship between temperature gradients and aerosols for six prevailing synoptic patterns over the the Southern Great Plains （SGP） site during 2001-10. Large-scale synoptic patterns strongly influ- ence the statistical characteristics of inversions and the accumulation of aerosols in the low-level atmosphere. The activity, frequency, intensity, and vertical distribution of inversions are significantly different among these synoptic patterns. The verti- cal distribution of inversions varies diurnally and is significantly different among the different synoptic patterns. Anticyclonic patterns affect the accumulation of aerosols near the ground more strongly than cyclonic patterns. Mean aerosol CN con- centrations increase during SBIs compared to no inversion cases by 16.1%, 22.6%, 24.5%, 58.7%, 29.8% and 23.7% for the six synoptic patterns. This study confirms that there is a positive correlation between temperature gradients and aerosol CN concentrations near the ground at night under similar large-scale synoptic patterns. The relationship is different for different synoptic patterns and can be described by linear functions. These findings suggest that large-scale synoptic patterns change the static stability of the atmosphere and inversions in the lower atmosphere, thereby influencing the diffusion of aerosols near the ground.

Anthropogenic emission inventories in China:a review

The development of reliable anthropogenic emission inventories is essential for both understanding the sources of air pollution and designing effective air-pollution-control measures in China. However, it is challenging to quantify emissions in China accurately, given the variety of contributing sources, the complexity of the technology mix and the lack of reliable measurements. Over the last two decades,tremendous efforts have been made to improve the accuracy of emission inventories, and significant improvements have been realized. More reliable statistics and survey-based data have been used to reduce the uncertainties in activity rates and technology distributions. Local emission factors and source profiles covering various sources have been measured and reported. Based on these local databases, improved emission inventory models have been developed for power plants, large industrial plants and the residential,transportation and agricultural sectors. In this paper, we review the progress that has been made in developing inventories of anthropogenic emissions in China. We first highlight the major updates that have been made to emission inventory models and the underlying data by source category. We then summarize the sector-based estimates of emissions of different species contained in current inventories. The progress that has been made in the development of model-ready emissions is also presented. Finally, we suggest future directions for further improving the accuracy of emission inventories in China.

Geodynamic processes of the continental deep subduction: Constraints from the fine crustal structure beneath the Pamir plateau

The Pamir plateau,located north of the western syntaxis of the India-Eurasia collision system,is regarded as one of the most possible places of the ongoing continental deep *** on a N-S trending linear seismic array across the Pamir plateau,we use the methods of the harmonic analysis of receiver functions and the cubic spline interpolation of surface wave dispersions to coordinate their resolutions,and perform a joint inversion of these datasets to construct a 2-D S-wave velocity model of the crust and uppermost mantle there.A spatial configuration among the intermediate-depth seismicity,Moho topography,and low-velocity anomalies within the crust and upper mantle is revealed,which provides new seismological constraints on the geodynamic processes of the continental *** results not only further confirm the deep subduction of the Asian continental lower crust beneath the Pamir plateau,but also indicate the importance of the metamorphic dehydration of the subducting continental crustal material in the genesis of the intermediate-depth seismicity and the crustal deformation.

Effect of glaciers on the annual catchment water balance within Budyko framework

The effects of catchment characteristics and climate variables on water partitioning into evapotranspiratio n and runoff can be evaluated using the Budyko ***,the influence of glaciers on catchment characteristics within the framework has yet been adequately *** we extend the Budyko framework and apply the elasticity method to examine the effects of glaciers on runoff between 2001 and 2010 in 25 upstream catchments of the Tarim River Basin in western *** consideration of glacier mass balance and glacier fraction improves the performance of the Budyko framework,especially for the catchments with a high glacier *** found that the catchment characteristic parameterwas strongly affected by glacier fraction,and it changes from 1.15 to 2.09 when glacier fraction decreases from 0.4191 to *** also reflects the change in water-energy partitioning that eventually effects on evapotranspiration and *** further assessed the average runoff responses to changes in precipitation,potential evapotranspiration,glacier mass balance,and glacier fraction in the 25 *** the runoff appears most sensitive to precipitation in average,its sensitivity to glacier mass balance and glacier area in fact rises from-0.07%to 0.17% and about 0-0.54%,respectively,when the glacier fraction increases from 0.0005 to 0.4191,further demonstrating the increasing influence of glaciers when the fraction becomes *** all,the inclusion of glacier factors in the Budyko framework allows us to understand more about the impacts and contributions of glaciers to runoff at a catchment scale.

The Key Role of Aptian-Albian Marine Fossils from Eastern Heilongjiang in Marine-Nonmarine Stratigraphic Correlation

The alternating marine and nonmarine coal-bearing Lower Cretaceous successions are well developed in eastern Heilongjiang, northeastern China, including the Jixi Group in the west and the Longzhaogou Group in the east. The correlation of these two lithostratigraphic groups with the nonmarine Jehol Group is important for dating the exceptionally well-preserved Jehol Biota. The Early Cretaceous marine fossils recovered from eastern Heilongjiang include ammonites, bivalves, radiolarians, foraminifers and dinocysts. During the early Aptian transgression the ammonite fauna entered the Hulin and Mishan areas and the bivalve Aucellina fauna in the Jixi area. This enables correlation of the marine lower part of the Chengzihe Formation of the Jixi Group with the Qihulin Formation of the Longzhaogou Group.

Ice avalanches are one of the most devastating mountain hazards,and can pose a great risk to the security of the surrounding *** ice avalanches have been widely observed in mountainous regions around the world,only a few ice avalanche events have been studied comprehensively,due to the lack of available *** this study,in response to the recent catastrophic rock-ice avalanche(7 February 2021)at Chamoli in the India Himalaya,we used high-resolution satellite images and found that this event was actually a glacier-rock landslide,where the collapse of the rock-ice body was caused by the sliding of the bedrock beneath the glacier,for which the source area and volume loss were about 2.89×10^(5) m^(2) and 2.46×10^(7) m^(3),respectively,corresponding to an average elevation change of about−85 ***,visual analysis of the dense time-series satellite images shows that the overall downward sliding of the collapsed rock-ice body initiated around the summer of 2017,and thereafter exhibited clear seasonality(mainly in summer).Meteorological analysis reveals a strong rainfall anomaly in the initiation period of the sliding and a remarkable winter warming anomaly in the 40 days before the *** of multi-temporal digital elevation models(DEMs)further suggest that the glacier geometry in the collapsed areas was likely changing(i.e.,accelerated surface thinning in the lower part of the glaciers and insignificant change in the upper part),which is consistent with the region-wide climate ***,by combining the above findings and a geomorphic analysis,we conclude that the rock-ice avalanche event was mainly caused by the joint effects of climate and weather changes acting on a steeply sloping and fracture-prone geological *** findings of this study provide new and valuable evidence for the study of slope/glacier instability at high *** study also highlights that,for the Himalaya and other high mountain ranges,there is an
