Comparison of methods for deriving phenotypes from incomplete observation data with an application to age at puberty in dairy cattle

Background Many phenotypes in animal breeding are derived from incomplete measures,especially if they are challenging or expensive to measure precisely.Examples include time-dependent traits such as reproductive status,or lifespan.Incomplete measures for these traits result in phenotypes that are subject to left-,interval-and rightcensoring,where phenotypes are only known to fall below an upper bound,between a lower and upper bound,or above a lower bound respectively.Here we compare three methods for deriving phenotypes from incomplete data using age at first elevation(>1 ng/mL)in blood plasma progesterone(AGEP4),which generally coincides with onset of puberty,as an example trait.Methods We produced AGEP4 phenotypes from three blood samples collected at about 30-day intervals from approximately 5,000 Holstein–Friesian or Holstein–Friesian×Jersey cross-bred dairy heifers managed in 54 seasonal-calving,pasture-based herds in New Zealand.We used these actual data to simulate 7 different visit scenarios,increasing the extent of censoring by disregarding data from one or two of the three visits.Three methods for deriving phenotypes from these data were explored:1)ordinal categorical variables which were analysed using categorical threshold analysis;2)continuous variables,with a penalty of 31 d assigned to right-censored phenotypes;and 3)continuous variables,sampled from within a lower and upper bound using a data augmentation approach.Results Credibility intervals for heritability estimations overlapped across all methods and visit scenarios,but estimated heritabilities tended to be higher when left censoring was reduced.For sires with at least 5 daughters,the correlations between estimated breeding values(EBVs)from our three-visit scenario and each reduced data scenario varied by method,ranging from 0.65 to 0.95.The estimated breed effects also varied by method,but breed differences were smaller as phenotype censoring increased.Conclusion Our results indicate that using some methods,phenotypes derived from one observ

Autotomy,the self-induced loss of a body part,is one of the most extreme forms of defense against predation.It occurs in a variety of animal taxa,including both vertebrates and invertebrates(Fleming et al.2007).The most commonly seen examples are spiders,lizards,and crustaceans(Emberts et al.2019)(Fig.1).By performing the autotomy behavior,animals can effectively survive predation or non-predatory entrapment,or reduce the cost of injury(Emberts et al.2019;Wuthrich et al.2022).

The development of high-performance solution-processed red organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs) remains a challenge,particularly in terms of maintaining efficiency at high luminance. Here, we designed and synthesized four novel orange-red thermally activated delayed fluorescence(TADF) dendrimers that are solution-processable: 2GCz BP, 2DPACz BP, 2FBP2GCz and 2FBP2DPACz. We systematically investigated the effect of substitution position and strength of donors on the optoelectronic properties. The reverse intersystem crossing rate constant(kRISC) of the emitters having donors substituted at positions 11and 12 of the dibenzo[a,c]phenazine(BP) is more than 10-times faster than that of compounds substituted having donors substituted at positions 3 and 6. Compound 2DPACz BP, containing stronger donors than 2GCz BP, exhibits a red-shifted emission and smaller singlet-triplet energy splitting, ΔE_(ST), of 0.01 e V. The solution-processed OLED with 10 wt% 2DPACz BP doped in m CP emitted at 640 nm and showed a maximum external quantum efficiency(EQE_(max)) of 7.8%, which was effectively maintained out to a luminance of 1,000 cd m-2. Such a device's performance at relevant display luminance is among the highest for solution-processed red TADF OLEDs. The efficiency of the devices was improved significantly by using 4Cz IPN as an assistant dopant in a hyperfluorescence(HF) configuration, where the 2DPACz BP HF device shows an EQEmaxof 20.0% at λEL of 605 nm and remains high at 11.8% at a luminance of 1,000 cd m-2, which makes this device one of the highest efficiency orange-to-red HF SP-OLEDs to date.

Two field experiments were conducted during the main seasons of 2021/2022 at the Research and Production Station of National Research centre in Egypt to investigate the effects of farmyard manure(FYM)and boron on Canola growth,yield,oil yield,and quality.The results unequivocally demonstrated that the combined application of FYM at a rate of 14.4 ton ha^(-1)with a foliar spray of boron at 100 ppm positively influenced plant characteristics,leading to enhanced growth rates and higher yields compared to the control group.Moreover,this integrated approach significantly improved nutrient content by enhancing levels of oil content,carbohydrates,proteins,phenolics,flavonoids,and total soluble sugars.These findings provide compelling evidence that utilizing farm manure along with boron can effectively enhance Canola properties in newly reclaimed soils while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

The selective oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol(KA oil)is a challenging issue in the chemical industry.At present the industrial conversion of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol is normally controlled at less than 5%selectivity.Thus,the development of highly active and stable catalysts for the aerobic oxidation of cyclohexane is necessary to overcome this low-efficiency process.Therefore,we have developed a cobalt-nitrogen co-doped porous sphere catalyst,Co-NC-x(x is the Zn/Co molar ratio,where x=0,0.5,1,2,and 4)by pyrolyzing resorcinol-formaldehyde resin microspheres.It achieved 88.28%cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol selectivity and a cyclohexane conversion of 8.88%under Co-NC-2.The results showed that the introduction of zinc effectively alleviated the aggregation of Co nanoparticles and optimized the structural properties of the material.In addition,Co0 and pyridinic-N are proposed to be the possible active species,and their proportion efficiently increased in the presence of Zn^(2+)species.In this study,we developed a novel strategy to design highly active catalysts for cyclohexane oxidation.

The objective of the invariant ellipsoid method is to minimize the smallest invariant and attractive set of a linear control system operating under the influence of bounded external disturbances. This study extends the application of this method to address the leader-following consensus problem. Initially, a linear control protocol is designed for the multi-agent system in the absence of disturbances. Subsequently, in the presence of bounded disturbances, by employing a similar linear control protocol, a necessary and sufficient condition is introduced to derive the optimal control parameters for the multi-agent system such that the state of followers converges to and remains in a minimal invariant ellipsoid around the state of the leader.

Enhancing the proton conductivity of proton exchange membranes(PEMs)is essential to expand the applications of proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs).Inspired by the proton conduction mechanism of bacteriorhodopsin,cucurbit[n]urils(CB[n],where n is the number of glycoluril units,n=6,7,or 8)are introduced into sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)(SPEEK)matrix to fabricate hybrid PEMs,employing a nature-inspired chemical engineering(NICE)methodology.The carbonyl groups of CB[n]act as proton-conducting sites,while the host–guest interaction between CB[n]and water molecules offers extra protonconducting pathways.Additionally,the molecular size of CB[n]aids in their dispersion within the SPEEK matrix,effectively bridging the unconnected proton-conducting sulfonic group domains within the SPEEK membrane.Consequently,all hybrid membranes exhibit significantly enhanced proton conductivity.Notably,the SPEEK membrane incorporating 1 wt.%CB[8](CB[8]/SPEEK-1%)demonstrates the highest proton conductivity of 198.0 mS·cm^(−1) at 60°C and 100%relative humidity(RH),which is 228%greater than that of the pure SPEEK membrane under the same conditions.Moreover,hybrid membranes exhibit superior fuel cell performance.The CB[8]/SPEEK-1%membrane achieves a maximum power density of 214 mW·cm^(−2),representing a 140%improvement over the pure SPEEK membrane(89 mW·cm^(−2))at 50°C and 100%RH.These findings serve as a foundation for constructing continuous proton-conducting pathways within membranes by utilizing supramolecular macrocycles as fuel cell electrolytes and in other applications.

The development of super-resolution fluorescence microscopy is very essential for understanding the physical and biological fundamentals at nanometer scale.However,to date most super-resolution modalities require either complicated/costly purpose-built systems such as multiple-beam architectures or complex post-processing procedures with intrinsic artifacts.Achieving three-dimensional(3D)or multi-channel sub-diffraction microscopic imaging using a simple method remains a challenging and struggling task.Herein,we proposed 3D highly-nonlinear super-resolution microscopy using a singlebeam excitation strategy,and the microscopy principle was modelled and studied based on the ultrahigh nonlinearity enabled by photon avalanches.According to the simulation,the point spread function of highly nonlinear microscopy is switchable among different modes and can shrink three-dimensionally to sub-diffraction scale at the photon avalanche mode.Experimentally,we demonstrated 3D optical nanoscopy assisted with huge optical nonlinearities in a simple laser scanning configuration,achieving a lateral resolution down to 58 nm(λ/14)and an axial resolution down to 185 nm(λ/5)with one single beam of low-power,continuous-wave,near-infrared laser.We further extended the photon avalanche effect to many other emitters to develop multi-color photon avalanching nanoprobes based on migrating photon avalanche mechanism,which enables us to implement single-beam dual-color sub-diffraction super-resolution microscopic imaging.

Sub-Seasonal Predictability of the Northeast China Cold Vortex in BCC and ECMWF S2S Model Forecasts for 2006–2021

As an important atmospheric circulation system in the mid–high latitudes of East Asia, the Northeast China cold vortex(NCCV) substantially influences weather and climate in this region. So far, systematic assessment on the performance of numerical prediction of the NCCVs has not been carried out. Based on the Beijing Climate centre(BCC) and the ECMWF model hindcast and forecast data that participated in the Sub-seasonal to Seasonal(S2S) Prediction Project, this study systematically examines the performance of both models in simulating and forecasting the NCCVs at the sub-seasonal timescale. The results demonstrate that the two models can effectively capture the seasonal variations in the intensity, active days, and spatial distribution of NCCVs; however, the duration of NCCVs is shorter and the intensity is weaker in the models than in the observations. Diagnostic analysis shows that the differences in the intensity and location of the East Asian subtropical westerly jet and the wave train pattern from North Atlantic to East Asia may be responsible for the deficient simulation of NCCV events in the S2S models. Nonetheless, in the deterministic forecasts, BCC and ECMWF provide skillful prediction on the anomalous numbers of NCCV days and intensity at a lead time of 4–5(5–6) pentads, and the skill limit of the ensemble mean is 1–2 pentads longer than that of individual members. In the probabilistic forecasts of daily NCCV activities, BCC and ECMWF exhibit a forecasting skill of approximately 7 and 11 days, respectively; both models show seasonal dependency in the simulation performance and forecast skills of NCCV events, with better performance in winter than in summer.The results from this study provide helpful references for further improvement of the S2S prediction of NCCVs.
