The avifauna in Tajikistan has been widely studied for the last century,but specific work on species richness pattern along elevation gradients in Tajikistan is rarely ***,we reported the first study of bird species richness(BSR)in the high-altitude mountain systems(Tien Shan and Pamir-Alay)of Tajikistan which are very sensitive to the recent climate *** aim to explore the relationship of BSR pattern with elevation gradient and to determine the potential drivers underlying the *** collected occurrence data from field surveys,published articles,and open access websites to compile a list of bird species along elevational gradients across the whole *** BSR was counted by 100 m elevational bands ranging from 294 m to 5146 *** patterns of BSR were calculated separately for five groups:all breeding birds,Passeriformes,non-Passeriformes,large elevational range species,and small elevational range *** calculated ecological and climatic factors of planimetric area,mid-domain effect(MDe),habitat heterogeneity(HH),mean annual temperature(MAT),temperature annual range(TAR),annual precipitation(AP),normalized difference vegetation index(nDVI),human influence index(HII),and human disturbance(HD)in each elevational band.A combination of polynomial regression,Pearson’s correlation,and general least squares model analyses were used to test the effects of these factors on the BSR.A unimodal distribution pattern with a peak at 750-1950 m was observed for all breeding *** similar pattern was explored for Passeriformes and non-Passeriformes,while species with different elevational range sizes had different shapes and peak *** all the breeding birds and Passeriformes,BSR was significantly related to spatial,climate and human influence factors,while BSR of non-Passeriformes positively correlated with all the given ***,second and fourth range classes of birds were significantly correlated with human influence factors.M

The Chinese Grouse(Tetrastes sewerzowi) and Hazel Grouse(T. bonasia) are sibling species that are well-adapted to harsh high-altitude and latitude habitats. In the current study, we sampled and sequenced 29 Chinese Grouse(n=16) and Hazel Grouse(n=13) from eight locations in China, Sweden,Germany, and northeast Poland to analyze population genetic diversity and structure, introgression, and local adaptation.

The majority of our knowledge of avian energetics is based on studies of birds from temperate and high latitudes. Using the largest existing sample of wild-caught Old World tropical species, we showed that birds from Southern Vietnam had lower basal metabolic rate (BMR) than temperate species. The strongest dissimilarity between tropical and temperate species was the low scaling exponent in the allometric relation between BMR and body mass in tropical birds (the regression slope was 0.573). The passerine migrants to temperate and high latitudes had higher BMR than tropical sedentary passerines. Body mass alone accounted for 93% of the variation in BMR (body mass ranged from 5 to 252 g). Contrary to some other studies, we did not find evidence besides the above mentioned that phylogeny, taxonomy, behavior, or ecology have a significant influence on BMR variation among tropical birds.

Molecular studies on donkey mitochondrial sequences have clearly defined two distinct maternal lineages involved in ***,domestication histories of these two lineages remain *** therefore compared several population characteristics between these two lineages based on global sampling,which included 171 sequences obtained in this study(including Middle Asian,east Asian,and African samples)plus 536 published sequences(including european,Asian,and African samples).The two lineages were clearly separated from each other based on whole mitochondrial genomes and partial non-coding displacement loop(D-loop)sequences,*** Clade I lineage experienced an increase in population size more than 8000 years ago and shows a complex haplotype *** contrast,the population size of the Clade II lineage has remained relatively constant,with a simpler haplotype *** the distribution of the two lineages was almost equal across the eurasian mainland,they still presented discernible but complex geographic bias in most parts of Africa,which are known as their domestication *** from sub-Saharan Africa tended to descend from the Clade I lineage,whereas the Clade II lineage was dominant along the east and north coasts of ***,the migration routes inferred from diversity decay suggested different expansion across China between the two ***,these differences indicated non-simultaneous domestication of the two lineages,which was possibly influenced by the response of pastoralists to the desertification of the Sahara and by the social expansion and trade of ancient humans in northeast Africa,respectively.

Tajik highlanders have resided in Pamirs（altitude ＞3000 m） for thousands of years. How they adapted to the harsh conditions remains unsolved. Herein, we measured four physiological traits for two groups of Tajik highlanders: Sarikoli Tajik and Wakhi Tajik, in comparison to highland Kyrgyz. neither hematologic nor spirometric evidence exhibit Tibetan-style adaptation in Tajik highlanders. To discern the potential genetic mechanism of high altitude adaptation in Tajik highlanders, we sequenced the whole genomes of 19 Sarikoli Tajiks, 20 Wakhi Tajiks, and 20 lowland Tajiks. The population genomic analyses reveal Tajiks as a branch of Central Asians experiencing complicated patterns of gene flows from european, South Asian, and east Asian populations. The settlement of Pamirs by the Sarikoli Tajiks is approximated to be around 3200 years ago. Selective sweep assessments, verified by coalescent simulation, identify SnRnP40, ZCCHC17, and FABP3 on chromosome 1, and KCTD13, TMeM219, and TAOK2 on chromosome 16, as the potential targets of selection in the Sarikoli Tajiks. These genes are involved in neurological development and diseases. The selective haplotypes in the Sarikoli Tajiks are standing variations with distribution in lowland populations. Luciferase reporter assays show that the selective haplotype of KCTD13 promoter and enhancer regions exhibit higher transcription activity than the nonselective haplotype. Overall, our findings provide novel insight into a very recent high altitude adaptation in humans, which probably targeted nervous system by utilizing standing variations via soft sweep.

Background:Drug resistance is one of the greatest challenges of malaria control programmes,with the monitoring of parasite resistance to artemisinins or to Artemisinin Combination Therapy(ACT)partner drugs critical to elimination *** of resistance to a wide panel of antimalarials were assessed in natural parasite populations from southwestern ***:Individuals with asymptomatic parasitaemia or uncomplicated malaria were enrolled through crosssectional surveys from May 2013 to March 2014 along the slope of mount *** falciparum malaria parasitaemic blood,screened by light microscopy,was depleted of leucocytes using CF11 cellulose columns and the parasite genotype ascertained by sequencing on the Illumina HiSeq ***:A total of 259 participants were enrolled in this study from three different *** some alleles associated with drug resistance in pfdhfr,pfmdr1 and pfcrt were highly prevalent,less than 3%of all samples carried mutations in the pfkelch13 gene,none of which were amongst those associated with slow artemisinin parasite clearance rates in Southeast *** most prevalent haplotypes were triple mutants PfdhfrI51R59n108I164(99%),pfcrt-C72V73I74e75T76(47.3%),and single mutants PfdhpsS_(436)G_(437)K_(540)A_(581)A_(613)(69%)and Pfmdr1 n_(86)F)(184)D_(1246)(53.2%).Conclusions:The predominance of the Pf pfcrt CVIeT and Pf dhfr IRn triple mutant parasites and absence of pfkelch13 resistance alleles suggest that the amodiaquine and pyrimethamine components of AS-AQ and SP may no longer be effective in their role while chloroquine resistance still persists in southwestern Cameroon.
